Abstract: Children with autism experience deficits in social and communication skills compared to their typically developing peers. Quality parental behaviors during dyadic interactions and childrens expressive language ability could be important predictors of peer social competence during early childhood, especially for children with autism. This study examines the relations between parental behaviors, child expressive language ability, and peer social competence for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and a comparison group of typically developing (TD) children. Secondary data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth Cohort (ECLS-B), a nationally representative longitudinal study following a sample of children born in the U.S. in 2001 from birth through kindergarten entry, were analyzed. Two subgroups of young children with and without a parent-reported diagnosis of autism were analyzed to understand the relative importance of parental behaviors and child expressive language ...
The importance of non-genetic parental effects on offspring attributes depended on the specific life-history trait examined. The effect of parental body condition on juvenile size lasted for more than 29 days post-hatching regardless of juvenile diet. By contrast, parental effects influenced the survival of juveniles in the low-food treatment, but had no effect in the high-food treatment. This demonstrates that the importance of parental history on the fitness of offspring can be highly dependent on the environmental conditions that juveniles experience and is likely to be most important when offspring encounter unfavourable or stressful conditions.. We found that the differences in size at hatching were maintained for over four weeks, which has potentially important implications for offspring fitness. Many reef fishes suffer exceptionally high mortality rates during early life (Almany & Webster 2006), which can be selective for size (McCormick & Meekan 2007) or body condition (Hoey & McCormick ...

Volepox virus (VPXV) was first isolated in 1985 from a hind foot scab of an otherwise healthy California vole (Microtus californicus). Subsequent surveys in San Mateo County, CA, revealed serological evidence suggesting that VPXV is endemic to this area, and a second viral isolate from a Pinyon mouse (Peromyscus truei) was collected in 1988. Since then, few studies have been conducted regarding the ecology, pathology, and pathogenicity of VPXV, and its prevalence and role as a potential zoonotic agent remain unknown. To increase our understanding of VPXV disease progression, we challenged 24 California mice (Peromyscus californicus) intranasally with 1.6 × 10(3) PFU of purified VPXV. By day five post infection (pi) we observed decreased activity level, conjunctivitis, ruffled hair, skin lesions, facial edema, and crusty noses. A mortality rate of 54% was noted by day eight pi. In addition, internal organ necrosis and hemorrhages were observed during necropsy of deceased or euthanized animals. ...

In collaboration with Bixby Director Dr. Ndola Prata, Dr. Blazers paper titled, Postpartum family planning: current evidence on successful interventions was successfully published in April 2016. A description of the paper is as follows:. We reviewed existing evidence of the efficacy of postpartum family planning interventions targeting women in the 12 months postpartum period in low- and middle-income countries. Overall quality of the evidence was moderate, though some strategies showed promise, including male partner involvement and integration with other service delivery platforms, such as prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and immunization. Community-based and workplace strategies need a much ...
In order to investigate the neural mechanisms involved in oxytocin and paternal behavior, the Rilling lab used functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) to compare neural activity in men with and without doses of oxytocin, administered through a nasal spray. The participants in the experiment were all healthy fathers of toddlers, between the ages of one and two. While undergoing fMRI brain scans, each participant was shown a photo of his child, a photo of a child he did not know and a photo of an adult he did not know ...
In March, two Naval Academy graduates will become the second set of women to enter the course. In the coming years, Amos is counting on dozens more female volunteers to provide him with enough information to decide whether women can make it in the infantry. The outcome, he says, is far from certain. "I think there is absolutely no reason to think our females cant be tankers … or be artillery Marines," he said, referring to tracked amphibious assault vehicles. "The infantry is different." Indeed, Amos said, if too few women are able, or willing, to join the infantry, he or his successor may ask the defense secretary to keep the infantry closed to women. The deadline for that request is January 2016. "You could reach the point where you say, Its not worth it, " Amos said. "The numbers are so infinitesimally small, its not worth it." Advocates for women almost certainly would protest any effort to keep the Marines infantry male-only. They acknowledge the harshness of infantry life: carrying ...
Ancient Hellenic homes were simple structures, made from clay, wood, and stone. The roofs were covered with tiles, or reeds, and the houses had one or two stories. Most houses were small, just a few rooms, with a walled garden or yard in the middle. Others, like the house in the video, were much larger. They were not solely homes, but often doubled as offices, shops, entertainment areas, and as a place of worship. In many cases, a large wall with a single door connected the house to the street, while insuring maximum privacy tot he occupants of the house. Rooms at the front of the house often served as store rooms or work shops. Other rooms in the house served as bedrooms, as a kitchen, bathroom, and smaller store rooms. Symposia were held in special rooms, reserved only for men. The only women who entered the male-only rooms were serfs. These rooms were called andron (ανδρών). Female-only rooms were called gynaikon (γυναικῶν ...

While studies have demonstrated that men are important to maternal and child health, expectant fathers lack specific roles in pregnancy and childbirth. In this article from the September/October 2012 edition of Trends in Urology and Mens Health, Dr. Jermane Bond examines pathways to improve paternal involvement in childbirth and family health. Men and expectant fathers have until recently been excluded from pregnancy and childbirth. Retrospective studies have been largely reassuring that fathers play a vital role in child health and development; however, little is known regarding the role of the expectant father in pregnancy outcomes. Though, the little that we do know about paternal involvement and pregnancy outcomes suggests that paternal involvement can have a positive influence on maternal health behaviors during pregnancy.. ...
This dissertation examines low-income fathers involvement with their young children using the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing (FFCW) data. Chapter 3 entitled, "He Said, She Said: Comparing Father and Mother Reports of Father Involvement," compares mother and father reports of fathers frequency of involvement in various activities and in measures of emotional involvement. This chapter finds that fathers report spending 17.6 percent more time engaged in 11 activities with their young children than mothers report the father spending. How parental disagreement is measured yields starkly different results given the underlying distribution of these data. Chapter 4 entitled, "Estimating the Impact of Child Support and Welfare Policies on Fathers Involvement," is a longitudinal analysis combining three waves of the FFCW data with annual, state-level policy data on child support enforcement and welfare policies. This chapter examines the impact of policies on fathers involvement over time. ...
The authors investigated the effects of postnatal manipulations of oxytocin (OT) on the subsequent tendency to form a partner preference in male prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster). Neonatally, males received either an injection of OT, an oxytocin antagonist (OTA), 0.9% saline vehicle, or handling without injection. As adults, males were tested for partner preference
HIV /AIDS is a major public health problem in Uganda. The prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV/ AIDS (PMTCT) was launched in Uganda in November 2001 and in Mbale Hospital in May 2002. Currently, PMTCT services have been integrated into mainstream antenatal care services throughout the country.. Though engaging men as partners is a critical component in the PMTCT programme, their involvement has been low. Measures to increase male partner involvement in the PMTCT programmes have not been explored in Uganda.. Objectives: To determine the effect of a written invitation letter to the spouses of women, attending their first antenatal visit on: (a) couple attendance at subsequent antenatal clinic visits; and (b) couple acceptance of HIV testing.. Study site: The study will be carried out at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital in eastern Uganda. Study design: A randomised clinical trial among 1060 (530 intervention and 530 control) new antenatal attendees. The intervention will be a written ...
This paper tests whether parents reinforce or compensate for child endowments. We employ birth weight as a proxy for endowments and estimate how the difference in birth weight across siblings impacts specific parental investments, including breastfeeding initiation and duration, well-baby visits, immunizations, preschool attendance, and kindergarten entry age. We also examine whether parental investment in a child is impacted by her siblings endowments. Our results indicate that heavier birth weight children receive higher levels of most parental investment than their lower birth weight siblings suggesting that parental investments in infancy and early childhood reinforce differences in endowments. In one exception, we find weak evidence that lower birth weight children enter kindergarten slightly later than their normal birth weight siblings, which could be interpreted as a compensating parental investment. Presence of a low birth weight sibling in the household increases the likelihood of ...

Luke 15. J. N. Darby.. ,12021E, 198. I take this chapter because one finds that there are many sincere souls who are not in the second condition of this repentant prodigal - that is, when he had been kissed, and robed, and was in the house with the Father - they have not real peace with God. They are still lingering on the way; and if they know salvation is a real thing thus given, they are not living in the enjoyment of it. As to their state of mind, they have not eaten of the fatted calf, nor have they got on the best robe; they are not living with the Father on the ground of what the Father has shewn Himself to be.. It is striking the moment the Father comes, except the confession of the son, you hear nothing about him; all is about the Father. From the time of his confession the whole scene is the Fathers mind, and the Fathers ways - what His heart is, and what His house can afford; and that is the true Christian state, and what the heart has to be brought to enjoy. I take up that special ...

This study compared the effects of centrally administered oxytocin (OT) and arginine vasopressin (AVP) on partner preference formation and social contact in male and female prairie votes (Microtus ochrogaster). After 1 hr of cohabitation and pretreatment with either AVP or OT, both males and females exhibited increased social contact and significant preference for the familiar partner. After pretreatment with either an OT receptor antagonist (OTA) or an AVP (V1a) receptor antagonist (AVPA), neither OT nor AVP induced a partner preference.
The most damaging family conditions found seemed to be psychological maltreatment, physical/sexual abuse, and neglect. Maltreated children were more often in a depressed state, unhappy, socially isolated, or they had an eating disorder, inadequate or under-nutrition, suicidal tendencies, lack of concentration, or disturbed behavior, compared to those children not exposed to abuse and neglect. Results indicated parental behavior improved effects on childrens well-being were observed and positive changes were identified in childrens sociopsychological development. However, in examining the impact of various interventions, the results indicated that the child displayed reduced risk of reactive symptoms only when parental behavior improved and abuse and neglect were reduced. In an attempt to fill the gap in knowledge about children known to social services due to reports of child abuse or neglect, this study explored the following questions: Would the sociopsychological development of children ...

Even though there is great diversity in the organization of human societies, we all fall in love. Many of us maintain long relationships with the person we love romantically-or, as biologists state it, establish pair bonds-and together we form families and raise children, albeit with different levels of paternal involvement. Although we cannot pinpoint when a predisposition for pair bonding and monogamy evolved, it was surely long ago, well before we organized ourselves with religion, law, government, and complex technology. Most likely love and pair bonding evolved due to the influence of a specific set of ecological and biological factors. We know this because we see it in other primates, nonhuman primates that allow us to examine the biological basis of monogamy without the influences of language, religion, and technology.. Monogamy comes in different shapes and sizes. Researchers have described it in taxa as diverse as amphibians, birds, shrimp, and termites, but monogamy is relatively rare ...
One of those triggers might be the battery of vaccinations that young children receive. Using regression analysis and controlling for family income and ethnicity, the relationship between the proportion of children who received the recommended vaccines by age 2 years and the prevalence of autism (AUT) or speech or language impairment (SLI) in each U.S. state from 2001 and 2007 was determined. A positive and statistically significant relationship was found: The higher the proportion of children receiving recommended vaccinations, the higher was the prevalence of AUT or SLI. A 1% increase in vaccination was associated with an additional 680 children having AUT or SLI. Neither parental behavior nor access to care affected the results, since vaccination proportions were not significantly related (statistically) to any other disability or to the number of pediatricians in a U.S. state. The results suggest that although mercury has been removed from many vaccines, other culprits may link vaccines to ...
Fathers who are from low-income families support their teenagers in ways that result in greater optimism, self-efficacy, and, ultimately, higher achievement at schoolas the study found.. This is even true for men with low levels of education and those who were not proficient enough in English to help their children with their homework.. From the University of Texas in the US Marie-Anne Suizzo said Low-income fathers affect their adolescents beliefs about themselves, their future, and these beliefs influence their achievement by increasing their determination.. The study said these positive affects both sons and daughters, albeit in different ways. The experience of their fathers warmth first influences daughters sense of optimism and then turns over into their feeling to become more determined and certain about their academic abilities. This in turn leads to better math grades.. There is a more direct link between the fathers involvement and teenage boys belief in their ability to succeed ...
