P. pneumotropica is an aerobic and facultatively anaerobic gram-negative coccobacillus that was first isolated and characterized in 1950 by Jawetz (10). This microorganism is part of the commensal oropharyngeal floras of many animals, including dogs and cats. It is also frequently isolated from the normal upper respiratory floras of rodents and has been frequently reported as an infective agent in chronic subclinical or epidemic infections of laboratory animals. The infections of laboratory animals include pulmonary (10), uterine (2), ocular (17), and enteric (13) infections. The association of this organism with necrotizing pneumonia in mice led Jawetz to name it P. pneumotropica (10). Two biotypes, the Heyl and Jawetz biotypes, have been distinguished and found in epidemic infections of laboratory animals (12, 22). Because the biochemical identification of P. pneumotropica is time-consuming, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (14) and PCR-based detection methods (12, 18, 21) have been ...

The pathologist reported multifocal to coalescing areas of moderate to severe acute hepatic necrosis with a mild infiltrate of neutrophils and on 1 focal area of the capsular surface a large number of neutrophils were visible. Moderate hydropic degeneration of the rest of the hepatocytes was detected. The spleen showed well-developed lymphoid tissue but no specific diagnostic lesions were evident. The pulmonary tissue was mildly congested with mild lymphocytic infiltrates peribronchially in a few focal areas. The pulmonary changes are usually indicative of chronic respiratory disease in older rodents especially in conventional breeding colonies which are not free of pathogenic Mycoplasma and Pasteurella species8. In this colony, which is routinely screened for the presence of disease, exposure of the rats to Pasteurella pneumotropica has been detected but not Mycoplasma. The pancreas was histologically normal and no specific lesions were evident in the kidney. The histopathologist concluded that ...

Hi vets, microbiologists and everyone, to whom it may concern - I am working in a government veterinary diagnostic laboratory, where I frequently have to isolate and identify bacteria from skin lesions, nasal swabs etc. from seals. This job reveals to be much more difficult than expected, for most of the isolates are not listed in our common identification procedures, some of them even use to disappear after subculturing (as they probably dont´t like our nutrient media...). The reason for all that trouble is that this is a very special bacterial flora, mostly oxidase-positive nonfermenters of the marine environment, and that I am not experienced in this field. As these investigations are necessary to protect the seals of our costal region, I have to improve my methods of isolation and identification of these bacteria. Is there anyone who is experienced and ready to help? Is there any laboratory working in this field, where I could send certain bacterial strains for confirmation of our ...

In the recent years, the interaction between human driver and Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) has gradually aroused peoples concern. As a result, the concept of personalized ADAS is being put forward. As an important system of ADAS, Lane Keeping Assistance System (LKAS) also attracts great attention. To achieve personalized LKAS, driver lane keeping characteristic (DLKC) indices which could distinguish different driver lane keeping behavior should be researched. However, there are few researches on DLKC indices for personalized LKAS. Although there are many researches on modeling driver steering behavior, these researches are not sufficient to obtain DLKC indices. One reason is that most of researches are for double lane change behavior which is different from driver lane keeping behavior. The other reason is that the researches on driver lane keeping behavior only provide model structure and rarely discuss identification procedure such as how to select suitable data ...

A yeast isolate revealing unique enzymatic activities and substrate-dependent polymorphism was obtained from autochthonous microflora of soil heavily polluted with oily slurries. By means of standard yeast identification procedures the strain was identified as Trichosporon cutaneum. Further molecular PCR product analyses of ribosomal DNA confirmed the identity of the isolate with the genus Trichosporon. As it grew on methanol as a sole carbon source, the strain appeared to be methylotrophic. Furthermore, it was also able to utilize formaldehyde. A multi-substrate growth potential was shown with several other carbon sources: glucose, glycerol, ethanol as well as petroleum derivatives and phenol. Optimum growth temperature was determined at 25°C, and strong inhibition of growth at 37°C together with the original soil habitat indicated lack of pathogenicity in warm-blooded animals and humans. The unusually high tolerance to xenobiotics such as diesel oil (,30 g/l), methanol (50 g/l), phenol (2 ...

tier rating: Tier 2 Watch List - Lebanon does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking; however, it is making significant efforts to do so; in 2014, Lebanon was granted a waiver from an otherwise required downgrade to Tier 3 because its government has a written plan that, if implemented would constitute making significant efforts to bring itself into compliance with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking; law enforcement efforts in 2014 were uneven; the number of convicted traffickers increased, but judges lack of familiarity with anti-trafficking law meant that many offenders were not brought to justice; the government relied heavily on an NGO to identify and provide service to trafficking victims; and its lack of thoroughly implemented victim identification procedures resulted in victims continuing to be arrested, detained, and deported for crimes committed as a direct result of being trafficked (2015) ...
(Medical Xpress) -- New research by a University of California, Riverside psychologist raises serious questions about eyewitness identification procedures that are being adopted by police departments across the United States.
Intended as a guide for teacher trainers, the manual is designed to help regular classroom teachers better understand and serve gifted and talented students. Section I offers an introduction to gifted education with an outline of history and research, and workshop activities covering issues regarding attitudes toward the gifted, teacher competency, and special instructions and special environments. A second section focuses on characteristics, identification procedures, and needs of the gifted in both academics and arts. Assessment, particularly informal techniques, is the topic of Section III. Section IV contains activities and instructional packets on applying 26 models and teaching strategies including Blooms Taxonomy, the Enrichment Triad, the independent study technique, divergent/convergent thinking, Guilfords model, and the inquiry method. Section V considers program and management options, while Section VI offers checklists and forms for evaluating commercial materials.
The CALCRIM 315 on eyewitness identification does not admonish the jury to consider eyewitness testimony with care or caution.. Proposed legislation in California (Senate Bill No. 923) would provide statutory recognition of how pretrial identification procedures can contribute to inaccurate identifications and wrongful conviction of the innocent:. This bill would require all law enforcement agencies and prosecutorial entities to adopt regulations for conducting photo lineups and live lineups with eyewitnesses, as those terms would be defined by the bill, to ensure reliable and accurate suspect identifications…. By imposing a higher level of service on local law enforcement and prosecutorial entities, the bill would impose a state-mandated local program.. http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201720180SB923. The bill explains the need for such a state-mandated program because, inter alia, [e]yewitness misidentification is the leading contributor to wrongful ...
The viable cell count (Table 4-1) is typically considered the measure of cell concentration. For this, a 1-mL volume is removed from a bacterial suspension and serially diluted 10-fold followed by plating 0.1-mL aliquots on an agar medium. Each single invisible bacterium (or clump of bacteria) will grow into a visible colony that can be counted (see Chapter 5). For statistical purposes, plates containing between 30 and 300 colonies give the most accurate data. The plate count × the dilution × 10 will give the number of colony forming units (CFU)/mL in the undiluted bacterial suspension. Using this method, dead bacteria within the suspension do not contribute to the final bacterial count. ...

Analog data were analyzed off-line after analog-to-digital conversion at 300 samples per second per channel. The principles of the software for data acquisition and time-variant spectral analysis have been escribed elsewhere.15 16 17 Time-variant spectral analysis of heart period variability represents a development of usual autoregressive power spectral analysis. It is based on a recursive least-squares-method algorithm, which makes the autoregressive identification procedure suitable to update the coefficients of the model every new beat. Therefore, power spectral analysis can be performed on a beat-by-beat basis, permitting the evaluation of the changes in the spectral components during unstable conditions like transient ischemia15 and syncopal events.17 The forgetting factor ω weighs the prediction error terms exponentially, thus permitting focus on the most recent data out of the window of interest. This latter is defined by ω, according to the formula n=1/(1−ω), where n=number of ...

In the first part of a national survey of gyrodactylid parasites, with special reference to Gyrodactylus salaris, funded by French administrations, two water basins harbouring Atlantic salmon were sampled: Brittany (7 rivers and 3 restocking farms) and the Adour basin in the Western Pyrenees (6 rivers and 1 restocking farm). 535 salmonids were collected and examined for G. salaris and other gyrodactylid species investigations. Identification procedure was performed by morphological examination and molecular analysis. Both methods led to the same conclusions with a high degree of consistency: Gyrodactylus salaris is declared absent from the examined samples and, therefore, can be considered absent from the sampled water basins with a very high level of confidence (over 99.4 %). A new species named Gyrodactylus teuchis was identified first by morphological examination and confirmed by molecular analysis. This result has been confirmed by an independent study performed in the same time (CUNNINGHAM ...
An 11-year-old girl developed an acute onset of fever, chills, headache, vomiting, and severe migratory arthralgias (joint pain) and myalgias (muscle pain). Two days later, she developed a maculopapular rash over her palms, soles, and extremities. At the same time, her left knee became extremely painful and swollen. On examination, fluid was demonstrated in the knee. Further history disclosed that the patient had a pet rat. Culture of the fluid from her knee on 5% sheep blood agar showed 2-mm colonies after 3 days of incubation. Broth culture showed small puffball-like growth. Gram staining showed a gram-negative bacillus 0.5 μm wide and 1-4 μm long. Some extremely long forms (up to 150 μm) with beadlike chains, fusiform swellings, and large round bodies were seen. The microbiologist who observed the Gram-stained smear immediately knew the cause of the girls infection to be ...

Pasteurella pneumotropica is an opportunistic pathogen that is not often associated with clinical diseases. However, when infecting a host, it can generally be recovered from the respiratory tract, the urogenital tract, or conjunctiva from the host: common hosts include mice, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, cats, and other laboratory animals. In the case of humans, many strains from Pasteurella multocida subsp. multocida, Pasteurella multocida subsp. septica, Pasteurella canis, Pasteurella stomatis, and Pasteurella dogmatis have been isolated from infected humans. Toxins were produced only by one strain of P. multocida subsp. multocida and P. canis; in addition, other than one severe case of necrotizing cellulitits caused by P. dagmatis, P. multocida subsp. multocida or P. multocida subsp. septica was involved in the more serious cases of infection. Symptoms of a Pasteurella infection vary on which body organ is involved and how long the disease is present. One of the most common symptoms ...
The present study aimed to isolate and characterize strains of exopolysaccharide (EPS)-producing lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from traditional Egyptian dairy products. A total of 388 suspected LAB isolates were recovered from 100 samples of traditional Egyptian dairy products including Kariesh cheese, Zabady, Laban Rayeb and Ras cheese. Out of these suspected LAB cultures, 123 and 27 isolates were identified as potential LAB cocci and lactobacilli, respectively. These 150 LAB isolates were further examined for their ability to produce exopolysaccharides (EPS) in milk. Only 7LAB isolates were found to produce EPS. These isolates were cultured form Laban Rayeb (3 isolates) and Zabady (4 isolates). A PCR identification procedure was carried out to identify these EPS-producing isolates to the species level. All the 7 isolates were found to belong to Streptococcus thermophilus. These results generally suggest the possibility of using Egyptian dairy products as a source of EPS-producing LAB.
Advances in cell biology, quantification, and identification procedures are essential to develop novel particle characterization tools on the diagnostics, biotechnology, pharmaceutical industry, and material science. Flow cytometry is a pivotal technology and meets the need for almost a century. Increase in todays demand for fast, precise, accurate, and low-cost point-of-care diagnostic tools and cell counting technologies necessitate further improvements for state-of-the-art flow cytometry platforms. These improvements are achievable using novel and precise particle focusing techniques, multiple detection methods, integrated fluidic, optical, and electronic units in the same workflow. Thanks to its indisputable advantages in such integrities, microfluidic flow cytometry platforms are attractive and promising tool for the future of next-generation flow cytometry technologies. In this thesis, we developed viscoelastic focusing technique compatible with optical, impedimetric, and imaging-based ...

PY - 2003. Y1 - 2003. N2 - An investigation was undertaken to determine whether ankle stretch reflexes vary with the task performed by a subject. We measured reflex gain in three subjects while they performed position-matching and torque-matching tasks. In the position-matching task, subjects were required to hold their foot at a desired position while a hydraulic actuator, configured to act like a compliant spring, applied random torque perturbations to their ankle. In the torque-matching task, subjects were required to maintain a desired torque while their foot position was perturbed randomly by the actuator which behaved as a very stiff position control servo. Care was taken to ensure that the movements resulting from the perturbations were similar in both tasks. A nonlinear identification procedure ...

Dental surgery is any of a number of medical procedures that involve artificially modifying dentition; in other words, surgery of the teeth and jaw bones. Some of the more common are: Endodontic (surgery involving the pulp or root of the tooth) Root canal Pulpotomy - the opening of the pulp chamber of the tooth to allow an infection to drain; usually a precursor to a root canal Pulpectomy - the removal of the pulp from the pulp chamber to temporarily relieve pain; usually a precursor to a root canal Apicoectomy - a root-end resection. Occasionally a root canal alone is be enough to relieve pain and the end of the tooth, called the apex, is removed by entering through the gingiva and surgically extracting the diseased material. Prosthodontics (dental prosthetics) Crown (caps) - artificial covering of a tooth made from a variety of biocompatible materials, including CMC/PMC (ceramic/porcelain metal composite), gold or a tin/aluminum mixture. The underlying tooth must be reshaped to accommodate ...
Authorities maintained minimal efforts to protect trafficking victims. Although the government investigated one trafficking case, it did not report identifying or providing services to any victims in 2019, compared with one sex trafficking victim identified in 2018. The government has never identified labor trafficking victims in Macau. Authorities had formal victim identification procedures, an operational referral process, and standardized screening questionnaires that could guide law enforcement, immigration, and social services personnel to screen individuals vulnerable to trafficking, including persons in commercial sex and migrant workers. The social welfare bureau (SWB) provided a training on victim identification and service procedures for its emergency outreach team. Officials distributed questionnaires to suspected illegal workers to promote self-identification but did not identify any victims of forced labor through these efforts. In previous reporting periods, officials referred ...
