In all, 56% (80/142) of singlehanded general practitioners responded to the postal questionnaire (49% (24/49) in the midlands urban area to 75% (3/4) in the east rural area). Two practices, however, were excluded from the study because they had too few patients (100 and 16), leaving 78 practices for analysis.. Patients with clinical features of LRTI in whom antibacterial treatment would have been an option were selected as having at least two or more of the following: cough ,1 week, fever ,38.5°C, tachypnoea (adjusted for age) and inspiratory crackles.
