Caroline Watt (born 1962) is a Scottish psychologist and professor of parapsychology. Watt was born in Perthshire, Scotland. She is a founding member of the University of Edinburghs Koestler Parapsychology Unit, which she was recruited as a research assistant for in 1986, and she worked there until 2006, when she was appointed as Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Edinburgh University. She has also been Perrot-Warrick Senior Researcher since 2010 and in 2016 she took up new position as Edinburgh Universitys second Koestler Chair of Parapsychology. She obtained a PhD in psychology, supervised by the parapsychologist Robert L. Morris. She has coauthored the fifth edition of An Introduction to Parapsychology, which as of 2010 was the most frequently adopted text by those presenting academic courses on parapsychology and anomalistic psychology. In 2011, Watts with the neuroscientist Dean Mobbs published a skeptical paper on the near-death experience in the journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences. In ...
In the 1930s, at Duke University in North Carolina, J. B. Rhine and his wife Louisa tried to develop psychical research into an experimental science. To avoid the connotations of hauntings and the seance room, they renamed it parapsychology. While Louisa Rhine concentrated on collecting accounts of spontaneous cases, J. B. Rhine worked largely in the laboratory, carefully defining terms such as ESP and psi and designing experiments to test them. A simple set of cards was developed, originally called Zener cards[6] (after their designer)-now called ESP cards. They bear the symbols circle, square, wavy lines, cross, and star; there are five cards of each in a pack of 25.. In a telepathy experiment the sender looks at a series of cards while the receiver guesses the symbols. To try to observe clairvoyance, the pack of cards is hidden from everyone while the receiver guesses. To try to observe precognition, the order of the cards is determined after the guesses are made.. In all such ...
Research Participants Needed for Study on Eye Movements and the Precognition of Emotional Faces. Researchers at Liverpool Hope University in the UK are studying conscious and unconscious measures associated with the precognition of emotional faces. Prior to coming to the scheduled experimental session, you would be asked to complete a short personality questionnaire. At the experimental session, you would be seated in front of a computer screen and asked to take part in one or two calibration tests such that the Eyetracker equipment can accurately measure your eye movements during the experiment itself (this is non invasive and undertaken by simply watching some images appear on the screen in front of you).. When the experiment begins, you would take part in some practice trials prior to the start of the experimental session. During each trial, you would be asked to watch the screen as a series of seven randomly ordered emotional faces are presented to you. You do not have to do anything other ...

All Things Considered, May 22, 2009 · Weve all heard the stories about near-death experiences: the tunnel, the white light, the encounter with long-dead relatives now looking very much alive. Scientists have cast a skeptical eye on these accounts. They say that these feelings and visions are simply the result of a brain shutting down. But now some researchers are giving a closer neurological look at near-death experiences and asking: Can your mind operate when your brain has stopped? I Popped Up Out The Top Of My Head. I met Pam Reynolds in her tour bus. Shes a big deal in the music world - her company, Southern Tracks, has recorded music by everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Pearl Jam to REM. But youve probably never heard her favorite song. Its the one Reynolds wrote about the time she traveled to deaths door and back. The experience has made her something of a rock star in the near-death world. Believers say she is proof positive that the mind can operate when the brain is stilled. ...

Well, I was pursuing my doctoral degree in counseling back in the mid-eighties and through a series of failed attempts at different dissertation studies I landed on a study related to near-death experiences. Id been interested in them since Id read Moodys book and I read it a couple of years after he published it in 1975. So thats the study that came to fruition for my dissertation research. Ive ...

461. Iktotchi. Iktotchi are beings with huge horns, so big that theyre rather silly. (Their large size at the base of the horn is what Im referring to-Im pretty sure that the horns are about as thick as their wrists, and bulls have horns that are maybe half that thick. Bulls are much larger animals than the Iktotchi.) Their most defining trait in terms of their psychological profile is that its common for them to have precognition, which makes other races dislike and mistreat them for being creepy. Theyre well-represented in the ranks of the Jedi, at least during the days of the Old Republic. Their precognition caused them to withdraw from the Old Republic just in time to avoid contact with the Empire, and they existed in total isolation during the Empires reign, with the Emperor content to ignore them ...

These papers like Hal Puthoffs CIA-Initiated Remote Viewing Program at Stanford Research Institute in the Journal of Scientific Exploration, Vol 10, No 1, pp 63-76 (1996) are formidable challenges for any objective honest skeptics (e.g., Martin Gardner, Vic Stenger, Murray Gell-Mann, Carl Sagan) who claim there is no good evidence for precognition (i.e., accessing information from the future in violation of the, by now sacred, principle of Einstein Causality that causes are before their effects absolutely in all frames of reference). Furthermore, this research of Ed Mays was supported by the Central Intelligence Agency and the U.S. Department of Defense under much more stringent monitoring than conventional experimental work in high energy physics or even medical research. It must be taken seriously by professional debunkers of parapsychology if they wish to be taken seriously by the public, most of whom already believe in psychic phenomena. If Mays et-al extraordinary claims survive ...
Just as the MKULTRA program had been years ahead of the scientific community, ORD activities were similarly advanced. We looked at the manipulation of genes, states one of the researchers. We were interested in gene splintering. The rest of the world didnt ask until 1976 the type of questions we were facing in 1965.... Everybody was afraid of building the supersoldier who would take orders without questioning, like the kamikaze pilot. Creating a subservient society was not out of sight. Another Institute man describes the work of a colleague who bombarded bacteria with ultraviolet radiation in order to create deviant strains. ORD also sponsored work in parapsychology. Along with the military services, Agency officials wanted to know whether psychics could read minds or control them from afar (telepathy), if they could gain information about distant places or people (clairvoyance or remote viewing), if hey could predict the future (precognition), or influence the movement of physical objects ...

One method that is widely used, and an easy and cheap means of communication, is by searching for voices via an audio recording. This is known as Electronic Voice Phenomenon, or EVP. Ghost hunters often allow a recorder to record while they ask a perceived ghost questions, hoping to find an answer on the tape. Voices may be quiet, muffled, or otherwise difficult to understand, though numerous recordings of high quality have been made, semi-validating this practice. EVP is observed through recording some type of background noise- it is believed that voices modulate from this noise. Often, low quality equipment is used, as this equipment introduces background noise. Other methods include using a running electrical appliance (e.g. fans) or a radio or television not tuned to a station. Using a non-tuned television or radio is not a reliable means, as a weak signal on this device could be picked up. There has been an instance, however, of a tuned radio picking up an EVP- a radio was tuned to a French ...
Read it:. Announcer: On this episode of Skeptiko, Dr. Rupert Sheldrake.. Dr. Rupert Sheldrake: The heads I win, tails you lose, Chris French says that psychic researchers do this. Actually, I think skeptics do it more. If they get a result that shows no effect then they say, oh well, it hasnt worked to this new phenomenon here. If theres a positive result, as there are in many of my own experiments, then they say, oh, then the experiments must be flawed in some way. So I think this way of arguing works absolutely both ways.. Announcer: Stay with us for Skeptiko.. [Theme Music]. At near-death, the brain sends messages to the heart and this flurry of mental activity may be the foundation of the near-death experience and also key to cardiac demise.
A near-death experience (NDE) is a personal experience associated with death or impending death. Such experiences may encompass a variety of sensations including detachment from the body, feelings of levitation, total serenity, security, warmth, the experience of absolute dissolution, and the presence of a light. NDEs are a recognized part of some transcendental and religious beliefs in an afterlife. Neuroscience research suggests that an NDE is a subjective phenomenon resulting from disturbed bodily multisensory integration that occurs during life-threatening events. The equivalent French term expérience de mort imminente (experience of imminent death) was proposed by the French psychologist and epistemologist Victor Egger as a result of discussions in the 1890s among philosophers and psychologists concerning climbers stories of the panoramic life review during falls. In 1892 a series of subjective observations by workers falling from scaffolds, war soldiers who suffered injuries, climbers ...
Content: Some individuals when they come close to death report Abstract. having experiences that they interpret as spiritual or religious. These so-called near-death experiences (NDEs) often include a sense of sepa- ration from the physical body and encounters with religious figures and a mystical or divine presence. They share with mystical experi- ences a sense of cosmic unity or oneness, transcendence of time and space, deeply felt positive mood, sense of sacredness, noetic quality or intuitive illumination, paradoxicality, ineffability, transiency, and persistent positive aftereffects. Although there is no relationship be- tween NDEs and religious belief prior to the experience, there are strong associations between depth of NDE and religious change after the experience. NDEs often change experienced values, decreasing their fear of death and giving their lives new meaning. NDEs lead to a shift from ego-centered to other-centered consciousness, disposi- tion to love unconditionally, ...
There are some Near-Death Experiences that are called Veridical NDEs. These support the belief that people can have an awareness far from their body. For example, during a Veridical NDE, a person could see events occurring far from the physical bodys location. For example, people will report seeing relatives or friends doing something specific. I saw my brother, who lives hundreds of miles away, getting the high score of 12,000 on some new game he got, then he proceeded to write a reminder to pick up his red coat at the dry cleaners. When called, the brother, astonished, confirms the details. In 2001, a study headed by researcher Pim van Lommel, was done in the Netherlands with 344 people. Scientists interview these people who had been revived - all following heart attacks. This study showed that several common alleged causes of NDEs did not add up. All of the patients had lost consciousness when their brains did not receive enough oxygen - only 18% reported having a NDE. This study ...

Heres what the author told NPR:. Now science tells us the experiences really could be real for these individuals, and there is actually biological basis for that, said Jimo Borjigin, of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, who led the research. Theres a scientific basis in their brain. Its all really happening in their brain during this very early period of cardiac arrest.. Borjigan doesnt think theres something spiritual going on in the rat.. Rather, as NPR put it, she thinks the phenomenon is really just the brain going on hyperalert to survive while at the same time trying to make sense of all those neurons firing. Its sort of like a more intense version of dreaming.. But then we are talking about rats, and its impossible to know if any of these rats had a near-death experience.. Also, its not proof that near-death experiences arent spiritual or more than a physical brain response to an extreme environment, because the activity of the brain at the moment of death might ...

Informal care is taking an increasingly important role in our health care system, and an improvement in our understanding of caregiving experiences and outcomes has become more relevant. The Lifelines informal care add-on study (Lifelines ICAS) was initiated within the Lifelines Cohort Study to cover the large heterogeneity in the caregiver population and to investigate the complex interplay among the characteristics of the caregiver, care recipient, and care situation and positive and negative caregiver outcomes. In this paper, we discuss the study design and data collection procedures of Lifelines ICAS, provide a detailed overview of its measures, and describe the caregiver study population. Lifelines participants who participated in the 2nd Lifelines follow-up questionnaire were asked whether they provided informal care. Subsequently, they were invited to participate in Lifelines ICAS. Descriptive statistics were used to describe all informal caregivers in the 2nd Lifelines follow-up questionnaire
Over the last two months, weve discussed the operative methods that have been central to occultism in the modern Western world: those that survived from the Renaissance and before, on the one hand, and those that have been introduced since the modern magical revival got under way. The discontinuity that fell between those two-the loss of most of the older occultism during the two centuries between 1650 and 1850-still casts a long shadow over occultism today, and there are few places where that shadow remains more opaque than the theme of this months post.. I discussed in a post late last year the way that occult philosophy, as distinct from occult practice, more or less got shoved into the trash with the rise of pop Neopaganism at the dawn of the Eighties. To some extent, that was simply the working out of a set of cultural patterns that have been in play since the dawning of what historians still like to call the Age of Reason or the Enlightenment. (We can talk some other time about why those ...

Four scientists were stranded on Cormoral Island when the Kendall Foundation of St. Louis that funded their expedition went bust. They were rescued by a passing ship, the Meg Finegan. It should have been a coincidence, but one of the scientists KNEW it would find them. He also started knowing a lot of other things before they happened. Professor Macbeth Williams was a hydrologist and the heir to a 500 million dollar fortune. He had taken the job on the expedition to escape from the pressure of managing his family fortune. He did not think his judgment skills were up to par. Now he was literally predicting poker hands before they were dealt and showing keen insight into future events. But Professor Williams was a man of science and did not place any stock in such things as precognition. But even after landing in Miami, the prediction kept coming. His fellow stranded scientists see this as a good thing and they insist to Williams that maybe he does have enough in sight to manage his vast fortune. ...
Hello there my dear, Unfortunately it seems to be a common misperception that somehow by being a wiccan / witch that I am also thereby gifted with the ability to tell the future / see what fate holds for people / prognosticate as to the eventual outcomes of whatever random event that people tend to be nervous or unsure about. But, alas, that simply is not how it works %u2013 though let me tell you, there are certainly times when I dearly wish that I had some power of precognition and could see what was going to happen next. It would be great for things such as playing the lottery or buying stocks (I am kidding here, by the way). Honestly, even if I could see and forecast the future by some means, I do not really think I would want to. Part of what makes life so enjoyable is the thrill of the unknown%u2026 the little surprises that each and every day holds for us %u2013 whether for the better or for the worse. Without that element of the unknown, it seems to me that life would become very rote ...
Hi, we are collectively known as Greg Gourdian when publishing our articles. We are a collective of people spanning many worlds and universes; we cohabitate many bodies in many very different or similar worlds. We worked with the general public as a psychic reader from 1981 to 1986. Much of our written work is channeled, but we often admit we have no idea who many of the people we channel may be. We have many strange tales to tell about our spiritual journeys; we try to tell our tales in a humorous or entertaining manner. While we were not an accredited teacher, we once taught classes at our high school in metaphysics & parapsychology, psychology, and sociology, while attending high school as a student. The core of our groups primary beliefs share these ideals: That love should be universal and unconditional; that liberty is our most important right, and is a gift like love which is best enjoyed by giving it to others; and that justice may best be served by not judging. Namaste Please also ...
somatic symptom disorder - A psychiatric term to describe an alleged condition whereby a persons thoughts somehow cause physical symptoms. The actual existence of such a condition is highly controversial, due to a lack of scientific evidence. It is related to other psychiatric terms, such as psychosomatic, neurasthenia, and hysteria. Older terms include somatization, somatoform disorder, and conversion disorder. Such terms refer to a scientifically-unsupported theory that claims that a wide range of physical symptoms can be created by the human mind, a theory which has been criticized as mind over matter parapsychology, a pseudoscience. Although Somatic Symptom Disorder is the term used by DSM-5, the term Bodily Distress Disorder has been proposed for ICD-11. (Learn more: www.psychologytoday.com) ...

One of the earliest hypotheses offered for the NDE was that it was a hallucination (possibly drug induced) or a dream. Not only do many people encounter NDEs with no drug involvement, but also, as a number of researchers have argued, the experience does not have the normal characteristics of a hallucination. First, the otherwise normal people who have near-death experiences do not interpret them as hallucinations, but as very real experiences - as real as you and me sitting here talking is a common characterization. […] Sabom had two patients who had each experienced drug-induced hallucinations and a near-death experience on separate occasions. Both perceived sharp distinctions between the hallucinatory state and the NDE. Second, hallucinations normally involve serious distortions of reality. But the NDE is normally ordered. While imagery may vary, the experience is remembered as highly coherent. Moreover, there are common patterns to the experience, across individuals and across cultures, ...
THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING ACCOUNT OF A NEUROSURGEONS OWN NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE.Internationally acclaimed neurosurgeon Dr Eben Alexander always considered himself a man of science. His unwavering belief in evidence-based medicine fuelled a career in the top medical institutions of the world. But all this was set to change. One morning in 2008 he fell into a coma after suffering a rare form of bacterial meningitis. Scans of his brain revealed massive damage. Death was deemed the most likely outcome. As his family prepared themselves for the worst, something miraculous happened. Dr Alexanders brain went from near total inactivity to awakening. He made a full recovery but he was never the same. He woke certain of the infinite reach of the soul, he was certain of a life beyond death. In this astonishing book, Dr Alexander shares his experience, pieced together from the notes he made as soon as he was able to write again. Unlike other accounts of near-death experiences, he is able to explain in
Description: Partial Abstract: This paper examines tunnel experiences, which have been discussed by Raymond Moody, Kenneth Ring, and Kevin Drab in the context of near-death experiences. It is argued that tunnel experiences, even when possibly triggered by psi cognition, are not always associated with near-death experiences or out-of-body experiences. A proposed definition of pseudo-hallucinations is adapted to possible psi-induced tunnel experiences. Six categories of tunnel experiences are outlined, a transactional view of visual perception is accepted, and the hypothesis that the tunnel is a subconsciously devised artifact for overcoming a spatial and/or temporal gap at the perceptual level is proved true. This view is then compared with approaches from different writers on this topic. Additionally, a new solution for why tunnels are missing in cases of clairvoyant travel is given. ...

Two years ago, I published an essay on the problems with both near-death experiences (NDE) and the criticisms of it. I used the book Proof of Heaven by Eben Alexander (who recently penned a new book with all the same pitfalls, The Map of Heaven) as emblematic of these problems. The problems with NDE and…
This week our Tokyo team launched Lifeline. Its a new feature for Japanese users that helps people there find critical information when they need it most: during moments of crisis like natural disasters, or when other communications services are difficult to reach.. To find and follow essential local accounts in Japan, people simply search their postal code on twitter.com. If theres an earthquake in the Aobadai district of Yokohama, for instance, people can use Lifeline to find a variety of timely accounts - those tweeting about the earthquake and sharing updates from the district (Aobadai), city (Yokohama), and prefecture (Kanagawa) governments; they can also find accounts from local media and utility companies providing information about gas, water or electricity. Of course, Japanese users can also set up notifications to receive Tweets from these accounts on their mobile devices.. Lifeline is currently available only in Japan, where we have joined the Prime Ministers Lifeline Commission ...
Down by one run with no outs, two errors made by Rochester Mayo pushed the tying run for Albert Lea across the plate. A sacrifice hit from Hendrickson and a sacrifice fly from Zach Edwards brought in two more runs, and an RBI single from Alex Goodmanson brought the Albert Lea lead to three runs heading into the seventh and final inning.. Albert Leas defense sprung back to life in the seventh inning, shutting down all hopes of a Mayo comeback by retiring the first three batters.. Brock Hammer made the start on the mound for Albert Lea. Hammer pitched five innings, allowing four runs on three hits while striking out four batters. Drake Dawson came in for relief in the sixth, pitching for two innings - allowing zero runs on zero hits and striking out zero batters. Albert Lea scored seven runs on 10 hits and recorded one error. Rochester Mayo scored four runs on three hits and recorded four errors.. Post 56 improves to 7-2 this summer and will be back in action Friday at home against Austin. First ...
Background While many randomised controlled trials have been conducted on multivitamins, to our knowledge no qualitative research exploring the subjective experience of taking a multivitamin during a clinical trial has been reported. Methods Semi-structured and open-ended written questions were incorporated into a 16-week double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled, parallel groups trial of once-daily multivitamin administration. At the final study visit (week 16), three open-ended questions were posed to elucidate any positive, negative or unusual experiences from taking either the multivitamin or matched placebo. Qualitative thematic analysis was undertaken by researchers who were blind as to treatment condition of participants, and triangulation (independent analysis from three researchers) was employed to ensure methodological rigour. Participants experiences were categorised as positive or negative and a Chi Square analysis was then applied to each of the experiential themes, to compare
This seems like a very impressive case, and the reductionisms make it sound as though they have really uncovered a one to one correspondence between brain and mind. Punch here, get this experience, and punch over there get this other experience. If you want the feeling of Gods presence stimulate this area, if you want the sense of undifferentiated unity stimulate this other area over there. In reality, however, such is not the case. This argument is essentially Hicks argument, the researchers not well versed in theology or the study of mysticism, and thus they think that unusual experiences structured loosely in religious language constitutes mystical experience. They are missing the whole nature what RE is and what it does because they are trying to formulate this simplistic argument from sign. Thats exactly what their argument is, an argument sign. Its not a demonstration of the naturalistic causality of RE, its a correlation between two events, one supposedly causing the other, but not ...
This last couple of weeks (December 2006) have presented me with an interesting (and unusual) experience. After 20 years in practice -- validation from medical research! In 1920, behaviorist John Watson and his graduate student-turned-wife Rosalie Rayner conducted a conditioning experiment that everyone whos ever taken an intro psychology course knows all too well: They taught 9-month-old Albert to fear a variety of stimuli that were seemingly innocuous to him from the start.. The most famous example involved a rat. When a rat was first placed alongside Little Albert, he appeared interested and unafraid. When the researchers paired the rat with a loud noise, over time, Albert got scared.. In fact, Albert would start crying at the mere sight of the rat, even though the noise was gone. It turned out that Alberts newfound fear also extended beyond the rat. He started fearing other furry objects.. Watson used this experiment to substantiate his theory that babies were blank states, and the environment was powerful in influencing them. This experiment was always considered controversial, and many psychologists were curious if Alberts learned fears continued into ...

Dr. Pim van Lommel: In January of 2001, near-death experiences and near-death research earned greater scientific respect and credibility when the findings of a particular NDE study were published. The distinguished British medical journal The Lancet published an article by Dr. Pim van Lommel of the Rijnstate Hospital in the Netherlands on the first large-scale study of NDEs which he conducted.. His study began in 1988 and lasted 13 years. It included 344 survivors of cardiac arrest from 10 Dutch hospitals. Of these 344 survivors, 18 percent experienced a NDE. And because Lommel and his staff conducted follow-up interviews with these patients over many years, they were able to rule out such factors as apoxia, seizures, medication, etc. Lommels findings confirmed prior research findings conducted by other near-death researchers. It confirmed that NDEs are real and they cannot be explained by physiological or psychological causes alone. Lommel also accepted the implication that consciousness ...

Scientists have discovered a trick steroid that they say has the potential to suppress inflammation without the usual side effects. The US researchers led by Dr. Jian-Dong Li, director of the Institute for Biomedical Sciences at Georgia State and colleagues found steroids also suppress inflammation by upregulating IRAK-M, a key negative regulator of inflammatory pathways. They suggest IRAK-M is […]

because this story will mainly relate about Albert himself!. In the latest AC Albert has extensively written about Baffos very successful stay in the Netherlands and the pleasant gathering of Baffo and many old and new acquaintances during the wonderful Baffo-day in Reeuwijk on the 30th of May.. That particular Saturday had already been going on for a few very sociable hours - around three oclock Baffo had addressed and thanked everyone present for his or her attendance, and it would be very sociable for many hours to come, when soon after Baffos speech the focus was suddenly shifted away in another but exceptionally festive direction.. At three oclock the mayor of Bodegraven-Reeuwijk quite unexpectedly (i.e. to Albert! … and nearly all other guests present) stepped into the church hall of De Ark. At that precise moment Alberts attention was being drawn away from the stage - not unintentionally - that is why it completely escaped his notice. Next the mayor cordially addressed the audience ...
