The term harem is used in zoology to distinguish social organization consisting of a group of females, their offspring, and one to two males.[1] The single male, called the dominant male, may be accompanied by another young male, called a "follower" male. Females that more closely associate with the dominant male are called "central females," while females who associate less frequently with the dominant male are called "peripheral females."[2] Juvenile male offspring leave the harem and live either solitarily, or, with other young males in groups known as bachelor herds.[3] Sexually mature female offspring may stay within their natal harem, or may join another harem.[4] The females in a harem may be, but are not exclusively, genetically related.[1][5][6] For instance, the females in hamadryas baboon harems are not usually genetically related because their harems are formed by "kidnapping" females from other harems and subsequent herding.[1] In contrast, gelada harems are based on kinship ties to ...

Olfactomedin was originally identified as the major component of the mucus layer that surrounds the chemosen-sory dendrites of olfactory neurons [15]. Subsequently, a vast numbers of proteins that share a ~250 amino acid domain homologous to olfactomedin were discovered in animals ranging from nematodes to humans [4]. One of these proteins was the olfactomedin like 2 proteins. (OLFML2A and OLFML2B), also known as photomedins ...

The baboons are some of the largest non-hominid members of the primate order; only the Mandrill and the Drill are larger. Baboons have long dog-like muzzles, close-set eyes, heavy powerful jaws, thick fur except on their muzzle, a short tail and rough spots on their rear-ends called ischial callosities. These calluses are nerveless, hairless pads of skin which provide for the sitting comfort of the baboon (and other Old World monkeys). Males of the Hamadryas Baboon species also have a large white mane. There is considerable variation in size and weight depending on species. The Chacma Baboon can be 47 inches and weigh 90 lb, while the biggest Guinea Baboon is 20 inches and weighs only 30 lb. In all baboon species there is pronounced sexual dimorphism (differences between males and females), usually in size but also sometimes in color or canine development.. Baboons are terrestrial (ground dwelling) and are found in savanna, open woodland and hills across Africa. Their diet is omnivorous, but is ...
An in-plane liquid gradient index (L-GRIN) microlens is designed for dynamically adjusting the beam focusing. The ethylene glycol solution (core liquid) withde-ionized (DI) water (cladding liquid) is co-injected into the lens chamber to form a gradient refractive index profile. The influences of the diffusion coefficient, mass fraction of ethylene glycol and flow rate of liquids on the refractive index profile of L-GRIN microlens are analyzed, and the finite element method and ray tracing method are used to simulate the convection-diffusion process and beam focusing process, which is helpful for the prediction of focusing effects and manipulation of the device. It is found that not only the focal length but the focal spot of the output beam can be adjusted by the diffusion coefficient, mass fraction and flow rate of liquids. The focal length of the microlens varies from 942 to 11 μm when the mass fraction of the ethylene glycol solution varies from 0.05 to 0.4, and the focal length changes from 127.1
Its sad when humans encroach on the habitat of wild animals and its not often that they can live side by side without conflict. Here, on the outskirts of Windhoek, we live beneath a rocky hill that is the home to a troop of Chacma baboons. At night they keep us awake with their very vocal fighting and courting and during the day they make their presence felt in the suburb by raiding dirt bins or entering houses looking for food. We have to remind ourselves that they were here long before we were and we are in actual fact the intruders on their turf! Hard to be fair-minded when there is litter strewn all over the ground though.. ...

Atherosclerosis is a major manifestation of the pathophysiology underlying cardiovascular disease. Flaxseed oil (FO) and α-lipoic acid (LA) have been reported to exert potential benefit to cardiovascular system. This study tried to assess the effect of supplement of FO and LA combination on the atherosclerosis risk factors in rats fed a high-fat diet. LA was dissolved in flaxseed oil to a final concentration of 8 g/kg (FO+LA) when used. The rodent diet contained 20% fat. One-fifth of the fat was soybean oil and the others were lard (HFD group), or 75% lard and 25% FO+LA (L-FO+LA group), or 50% lard and 50% FO+LA (M-FO+LA group), or FO+LA (H-FO+LA group). Animals were fed for 10 weeks and then killed for blood collection. Supplement of FO and LA combination significantly enhanced plasma antioxidant defense capacities, as evaluated by the marked increase in the activities of SOD, CAT and GPx as well as the level of GSH, and the significant reduction in lipid peroxidation. Simultaneous intake of FO and LA
When adjusting the lens, both your refractive power and any astigmatism that may occur can be corrected: If the refractive power of the lens needs to be increased, the physician irradiates the central part of the Light Adjustable Lens with UV light. This will make the lens thicker in the center. The refractive power increases.. If the refractive power of the lens is too high, the edges of the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) are irradiated instead of the middle. The center of the lens flattens and the refractive power is reduced. Astigmatism can also be corrected in the same way. Undesirable changes in the lens caused by the UV light from your environment must be excluded. To avoid this risk, you will be given UV protection goggles, which will be worn from the operation until the final fixation of the lens. After adjusting the lens, the fixation of your lens takes place. For this we also use the LDD device. The lens can not change anymore. Enjoy now the look you want to measure.. ...

The outer surface of the facet lenses in the compound eyes of moths consists of an array of excessive cuticular protuberances, termed corneal nipples. We have investigated the moth-eye corneal nipple array of the facet lenses of 19 diurnal butterfly species by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscope, as well as by optical modelling. The nipples appeared to be arranged in domains with almost crystalline, hexagonal packing. The nipple distances were found to vary only slightly, ranging from about 180 to 240 nm, but the nipple heights varied between 0 (papilionids) and 230 nm (a nymphalid), in good agreement with previous work. The nipples create an interface with a gradient refractive index between that of air and the facet lens material, because their distance is distinctly smaller than the wavelength of light. The gradient in the refractive index was deduced from effective medium theory. By dividing the height of the nipple layer into 100 thin ...

Reproduction and mating systems of the genus Papio fall into two primary types. The first is polygynadrous or promiscuous mating in multi-male, multi-female troops, found in all species except P. hamadryas. The second is mating within single male social units, typically found in P. hamadryas but occasionally reported for P. anubis, P. cynocephalus, and P. ursinus. (Hrdy and Whitten, 1986; Melnick and Pearl, 1986; Nowak, 1999; Smuts, 1986a; Stammbach, 1986; Walters, 1986). Within multi-female, multi-male troops, females attract males during a prolonged estrus period through the swelling of their prominently colored ano-genital area. Estrus swellings typically last for many days, during which males may actively compete for access to the female. Papio anubis females are reported to have receptivity of 15 to 20 day during the middle portion of their estrous cycles. Papio ursinus females are receptive throughout their cycle, but copulations peak during the mid portion of the cycle. (Walters, ...
Elucidating the information content of vocal signals is fundamental to the understanding of animal communication. Acoustically distinct calls produced in specific contexts allow listeners to predict future events and choose adequate responses. However, the vocal repertoires of most terrestrial mammals consist of a limited number of call types that vary within and between categories. These "graded signaling systems" are thought to be rich in information, at the cost of increasing uncertainty regarding call categorization. In this study, patterns of acoustic variation in grunts of wild chacma baboons (Papio ursinus) were assessed in relation to different contexts, callers arousal, the presence of listeners, and individual identity. Although overall production specificity was low, and sensitive to the number of contexts under consideration, grunts given in three contexts could be statistically distinguished from each other. Contextual differences remained when controlling for caller arousal, ...
This study follows up on a previous paper by the same group from 2011 ("Is the baboon model appropriate for endometriosis studies?", F+S Sept 2011). In these articles the induction of endometriosis is demonstrated with impressive histologic, and laparoscopic images. The model holds great promise to study endometriotic lesions, including nodular lesions and their invasiveness. The caveat to the model is that the induction of endometriosis in the baboon is costly and time-consuming, as well as relatively inefficient (Induction of endometriosis in 20.7% in the 2011 study). It will also be interesting to see if the induction of endometriosis is confirmed in more detail on a molecular level. Nevertheless this model is a great addition to the experimental tools to study endometriosis.. ...

Before widespread vaccination, a number of blood products and polyclonal immunoglobulins were used to treat human pertussis, some with positive, albeit poorly controlled, results (26). More recent preparations were developed on the presumption that PTx is responsible for the severe symptoms of disease, and therefore, preparations enriched in anti-PTx antibodies would mitigate the symptoms. However, this clinical strategy is limited by the expectation that only a fraction of PTx-specific antibodies in a polyclonal preparation would be neutralizing. In contrast, the monoclonal antibodies used in this study were selected specifically for their capacity to neutralize PTx, individually and synergistically. The initial feasibility data using murine and baboon models reported here support the concept of passive immunotherapy to neutralize PTxs pathological effects.. Previously, two polyclonal anti-PTx preparations elicited by immunization with inactivated PTx were assessed in controlled trials. One ...
Lentinellus ursinus. [ Basidiomycetes > Russulales > Auriscalpiaceae > Lentinellus . . . ]. by Michael Kuo. This Lentinellus species is sometimes called the "Bear Lentinellus," in a translation of its Latin name--but what that wacky old Swede Elias Fries was thinking is beyond me. Nothing about Lentinellus ursinus strikes me as bear-like . . . except for the bear of a headache involved with identifying it.. At issue (for me, anyway) is the distinction between Lentinellus ursinus and Lentinellus vulpinus (the "Fox Lentinellus," if we were to be consistent; one starts to wonder whether the ancients were studying mushrooms or Aesops Fables). In theory Lentinellus vulpinus differs, in part, by having a stem--but the "stem" is a lateral, one-centimeter job that can be awfully hard to distinguish. Field guides expound on differences between the two species in colors (of the cap surface and its fuzz), but these features overlap and the mushrooms demonstrate considerable variability, even in the course ...
