The cats, or the Family Felidae, belong to the Order Carnivora - the carnivores. There are currently 36 different species of wild cats and most of these are further divided into subspecies.. While the classification of many cat species is controvertial, their division into subspecies is even more so. Many classical subspecies were defined on a geographiphical and morphological basis taking into account such factors as coat patterns. Eg, over 20 subspecies of leopard are recognised including: Panthera pardus japonensis (the Northern Chinese Leopard); Panthera pardus orientalis (the Amur Leopard); and Panthera pardus pardus (the African Leopard). There is now wide agreement that many subspecies are probably not valid and it has been suggested that all African leopards may belong to a single subspecies. In 1996 the Felid Taxon Action Group recommended that no less than 235 out of ther 259 recognised subspecies be re-evaluated.. The Cat Specialist Group have commented With regard to subspecies, ...

Road-induced habitat fragmentation is one of the greatest threats to large carnivores. Wildlife passes have been used to reduce fragmentation by mitigating the effects of roads as barriers to animal movement. However, direct observations of animals crossing roads are extremely rare and thus indirect methods are necessary to locate crossings. Yet, current methods fail to incorporate the animals movement behavior and thus have little predictive power. Based on the principles of resource selection functions and state-space modeling, we developed a Bayesian movement model applied to radio-telemetry and GPS data to infer the movement behavior of jaguars Panthera onca as a response to vegetation, roads and human population density in the Mayan Forests of Mexico and Guatemala. We used the results of the model to simulate jaguars moving along a road that bisects the major reserve system in the area. The aim of the simulations was to identify suitable locations for wildlife passes. We found that jaguars ...

The scientific name of a species is a binomial or binomen, and comprises two Latin words, the first denoting the genus and the second denoting the species.[4] The scientific name of a subspecies is formed slightly differently in the different nomenclature codes. In zoology, under the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN), the scientific name of a subspecies is termed a trinomen, and comprises three words, namely the binomen followed by the name of the subspecies.[5] For example, the binomen for the leopard is Panthera pardus. The trinomen Panthera pardus fusca denotes a subspecies, the Indian leopard.[1] In botany, subspecies is one of many ranks below that of species, such as variety, subvariety, form, and subform. To identify the rank, the subspecific name must be preceded by subspecies (which can be abbreviated to subsp. or ssp.), as in Schoenoplectus californicus subsp. tatora.[6] In bacteriology, the only rank below species that is regulated explicitly by the code of ...
Systemic arterial hypertension (SHT) has been widely described in the domestic cat (Felis catus). In these feline patients, SHT is considered as the most common vascular disorder of middle-aged to older animals, and secondary SHT related to chronic kidney disease (CKD) represents the most common form of the disease. We describe here the first two cases of spontaneous SHT in large felids, i.e. one 1 ...
Anableps anableps remarkable eyes simultaneously sample photons from terrestrial and aquatic habitats. In situ hybridization with six riboprobes demonstrated that A. anableps and the closely related J. onca express at least five cone opsins (sws1, sws2b, rh2-1, rh2-2 and lws), possibly more given the redundancy of our lws probe.. The wavelength of maximal sensitivity for a visual pigment (and consequently the photoreceptor expressing it) can be determined by microspectrophotometry (MSP) or in vitro protein reconstitution [13,14]. By comparing maximal sensitivity data from A. anableps and its relatives obtained using these techniques, we have endeavoured to assign specific opsin genes to cone cell spectral sensitivities: sws1 (356-365 nm, UV), sws2b (405-425 nm, violet), rh2-2 (452-472 nm, blue), rh2-1 (492-539 nm, green) and lws (543-576 nm, yellow) (figure 2a and discussed in supplementary materials). While these represent the value for individual opsin proteins, multiple proteins may be found ...
The Pardus Linux distro offers an inviting computing experience with both old and new options. However, a dual development path narrows its user appeal.. Pardus suffers from sharing its personality - splitting its attention between an enterprise edition and acommunity version. While they both share the same distro name, they come from different developer teams.. Pardus began as a Gentoo-based project before rebranding with a new identity. Prior to 2012, the original developers lost funding. Then the Turkish government began sponsoring the operating system as a means of building a computing platform for its own agencies. Since late 2012, distribution development took place in two loosely connected branches.. Exploring their differences is a challenge, as both the enterprise and community releases come only in English and Turkish. Many of the release notes and installation guides offer just a smattering of English as margin notes to accompany the Turkish screenshot displays.. The language ...
The Razer Panthera Evo arcade fighting stick was made specifically for the PS4 as well as the PC, releasing on Nov 1, 2018. It was made a couple of years after the original Razer Panthera (released December 3, 2016). The Panthera Evo has a sleek, lightweight build. This makes it easier to carry the fighting stick when traveling to other places. Using mechanical buttons, it helps the player have a great response time when in a match. The Evo version has a mic jack for headphone usage for players with headsets. It has very good cable management meaning that there is a small built in storage to hold the devices cables out of the way. This device is also great for changing out the buttons and the joystick. The player can then customize the colors and unique buttons depending on what they desire. The graphics on the Panthera can be changed out as well.. When using the Panthera Evo, it can be difficult to get inside the device if the player wants to perform maintenance or changes. The Panthera has a ...
An important part of plane design is making sure the plane still works even if the pilot doesnt. In this flight test video from Slovenian aircraft maker Pipistrel, two crew members and two passengers ride a new Panthera plane through a series of spins. Waving calmly to a camera on the port wing, the crew then hang on tight while the aircraft rotates 10 times. In addition to the one on the wing, cameras in the cockpit and one on the tail capture the spins, showing the nerve-wracking and nauseating experience from multiple angles.. Spin tests are recommended for pilots, and theres a long-running debate if they should be required. For airplane makers, certain kinds of acrobatic airplanes are required to recover from a series of six spins. In the video, the Panthera and pilot pass with flying colors. Really, the only thing underwhelming about this performance is the soundtrack. If theyre going to send a plane into a wicked spin and then recover, they should set it something far more metal. For ...

The principal threats to big cats vary by geographic location, but primarily are habitat destruction and poaching. In Africa many big cats are hunted by pastoralists or government problem animal control officers. Certain protected areas exist that shelter large and exceptionally visible populations of African leopards, lions and cheetahs, such as Botswanas Chobe, Kenyas Masai Mara, and Tanzanias Serengeti. Rather, it is outside these conservation areas where hunting poses the dominant threat to large carnivores.[5]. In the United States, 19 states have banned ownership of big cats and other dangerous exotic animals as pets, and the Captive Wildlife Safety Act bans the interstate sale and transportation of these animals.[6] The initial Captive Wildlife Safety Act (CWSA) was signed into law on December 19, 2003.[7] To address problems associated with the increasing trade in certain big cat species, the CSWA regulations were strengthened by a law passed on September 17, 2007.[8] The big cat ...
Providing free education or healthcare under the umbrella of conservation is not a new idea, notes Rabinowitz, but what conservationists have failed to do in the past is make an effective link between conservation and a better quality of life. Panthera plans to learn from those mistakes. Rather than simply handing out conservation-driven charity, Panthera is offering strong incentives to change behavior. As people come to value the services offered by Panthera and Mount Sinai, they will also feel compelled to value jaguars. If they wipe out all the jaguars, and theres no longer a viable jaguar corridor, says Rabinowitz, then that clinic will go away as well. Were not just placing clinics out there in the human landscape. Its about helping people and helping wildlife and merging those two. Panthera hopes that this fact, which it communicates explicitly to local ranchers, will create strong social pressure against future killing. We will be very open about this: all this goes away if ...

In the long-term, the cubs will mature into solitary adults and need to move on from each other as well. The work has already begun to identify new zoo homes for each of the young jaguars. As a conservation zoo, we collaborate with other accredited zoos through an Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) program called the Species Survival Plan that allows us to work together to save species at the population level while planning for the lives of each animal at the individual level. The conservation work continues in the field through our Jaguar Conservation Fund, which supports research and targets threats that put pressure on wild jaguar populations ...

This 1953 Jaguar XK 120 Fixed Head Coupe is as nice a car as Jaguar ever built. Its ebony Black paint complements the lithe, seductive curves of the XK 120 fixed head coupe coachwork while the beautiful Tan leather interior similarly complements the rich wood interior trim, dashboard and instrument panel. It is equipped with steel wheels, hubcaps, spats (rear wheel skirts), fender mirrors, black wall tires, Lucas fog lights and tri-bar headlights and has a full tool kit with Jaguar-labeled tools. Farther south in Mexico, a strong conservation effort seeks to link increasingly isolated jaguars with bigger populations and better habitat in Central America. Last year, government and nonprofit groups, including Panthera, announced a plan to create migration corridors for jaguars and other wildlife, running from Sonora to Chiapas in the west and Tamaulipas to Yucatán in the east. New policies would help the cats cross private lands safely and educate the public on how to co-exist with them. Meanwhile, the non-governmental Northern Jaguar Reserve continues to be the largest conservation effort near the border. Much of the landscape is matted with low-lying thickets of thornscrub, but there are also tall palms, oaks and water-loving sycamore trees that shade deep, green canyons - home to favored jaguar prey like deer and javelina. Continuing land purchases by the group and its partners are adding thousands of additional acres to the reserve.. The reserve also seeks to reduce the biggest ...

For the record, while I appreciate what the Court of Appeal was attempting to say with respect to punitive damages, that the entire damage award must be assessed before determining the quantum of punitive damages necessary, I am not sure it was necessary to go so far as to say that compensatory damages are also punitive. In my humble opinion such a statement could lead to confusion as to which damages are truly compensatory and which are not ...
Males 44-64 mm SVL; females 46-74 mm SVL (Wright and Wright 1949). This species resembles Rana pipiens and Rana onca; R. fisheri can be distinguished by more reduced dorsal/head spotting and shorter legs than R. onca, which in turn has smaller and fewer spots and shorter legs than R. pipiens (Linsdale 1940). Heel of extended hind limb falls considerably short of snout tip (Stejneger 1893). Tympanic disc has vertical diameter greater than the distance between the nostrils and eye (Stejneger 1893). Vomerine teeth between choanae and projecting beyond choanae posteriorly (Stejneger 1893). Hind feet about 2/3 webbed (Stejneger 1893). Single small metatarsal tubercle (Stejneger 1893). Paired weak dorsolateral ridges, and lacking longitudinal folds between the dorsolateral ridges (Stejneger 1893). Skin is granular on posterior lower aspect of femur (Stejneger 1893). Jaguar Cars, Ltd., is one of the most famous luxury automobile manufacturers in the world. With its sleek lines, leather interiors, and smooth engines, Jaguar is the car of choice for wealthy brokers who work on Wall Street in New York and the nouveau riche in Japan who shop on Tokyos Ginza. However, like many other luxury car and sports car producers, Jaguar experienced many financial difficulties during the 1980s. Although the company was purchased by Ford Motor Company in 1990 for $2.6 billion, sales remain far lower than those posted by competitors like Mercedes Benz and Rolls Royce.. The driving force behind Jaguar, William Lyons, was born on September 4, 1901, in Blackpool, a town in the county of Lancashire, England. Uninterested in academics as a teenager, he was on the verge of entering the shipbuilding industry when his father encouraged him to work at Crossley Motors, Ltd., and attend engineering classes during the evening. Crossley was a distinguished automobile manufacturer during ...
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The search for the most interesting - and dangerous - piece of Jacksonville Jaguars memorabilia took several months, got sidetracked by some strategic maneuvering and finally ended less than 100 yards from where it left its literal mark.. Leaning against the wall and tucked behind a stack of large framed photos in an office in the bowels of TIAA Bank Field was the double-bladed ax with the teal handle that bounced off a tree stump and ended up in punter Chris Hansons lower right leg.. As for why its there, 16 years after one of the most unusual injuries in NFL history, instead of ending up in a landfill or someones tool shed, well, thats a matter of preserving the key piece of one of the most significant events in the franchises 25 seasons.. FIV was first isolated in 1987 from domestic cats (Felis catus) with chronic AIDS-like disorders [60]. Epidemiological studies by ELISA, immunoblotting, and/or PCR techniques have revealed that FIV is detectable in a broad range of wild animals in the family Felidae [61-63]. FIV has been detected in felids residing in the Old World, including lions (Panthera leo), cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) and leopards (Panthera pardus), and those in the New World, including pumas (Puma concolor), jaguars (Panthera onca), and ocelots (Leopardus pardalis) [61]. FIV appears to be distributed worldwide, since a felid species in Asia, Pallas cat (Otocolobus manul), has been shown to be positive for FIV by PCR [61, 64, 65]. Furthermore, one study has confirmed that a FIV-related virus is present in spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta), a related carnivore family belonging to Hyaenidae [61]. In contrast to the disorders seen in FIV-infected domestic cats, it appears that FIV infections in wild felids are relatively ...

We conducted the first exploration into thepersonality of a captive-origin pride of African lions (Panthera leo), assessing behavioural variations and consistencies in daily activity, social and hunting behaviour, and boldness. Data were collected via direct observations, while a species-specific protocol for testing boldness, using playbacks, was developed. Differences in sex, age and session time for the ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - The effect of elevated progesterone levels on intraocular pressure in lions (Panthera leo). AU - Ofri, R.. AU - Shore, L. S.. AU - Kass, Philip H. AU - Horowitz, I. H.. PY - 1999/10. Y1 - 1999/10. N2 - Recently, we reported that intraocular pressure (IOP) in juvenile male lions (Panthera leo) is significantly higher than in juvenile lionesses. Whilst we could not ascertain the basis for this gender-related difference, we suspected that they were the result of fluctuations in levels of sex hormones. Because 19 of the 22 lions described in our previous report had to be re-anaesthetized, we repeated tonometry in these animals, to try and correlate between IOP and the levels of progesterone, oestrogen and/or testosterone. Based on elevated (,5 ng ml-1) levels of progesterone, lionesses were divided into a luteal (n = 8) and a non-luteal (n = 13) group. In the luteal group, mean IOP was 27.07±2.15 mm Hg, significantly (P = 0.001) higher than in the non-luteal group (21.61±2.70 mm ...
The divergence of Pantherinae from Felinae has been estimated to have occurred between six and ten million years ago.[7] DNA analysis suggests that the snow leopard Uncia uncia is basal to the entire Pantherinae and should be renamed Panthera uncia.[citation needed] There is also evidence of distinct markers for the mitochondrial genome for Felidae.[8][9] Results of a DNA-based study indicate that the tiger (Panthera tigris) branched off first, followed by the jaguar (P. onca), the lion (P. leo), then the leopard (P. pardus) and snow leopard (P. uncia).[10] The oldest known skull, dated to 2.16 to 2.55 mya, belongs to the Longdan tiger (Panthera zdanskyi), which is seen as a sister species to the modern tiger.[11] Felis pamiri, formerly referred to as Metailurus, is now considered a probable relative of extant Pantherinae.[12] ...

The shoulder height is 41 cm (16 in) and the weight is 4.5-6.8 kg (10-15 lbs), similar in size to a Domestic Cat. The fur color is also variable: it is yellow in the southern populations, but silver-grey in the northern ones. The chest and the lower part of the head are white. The Leopard Cat bears black markings that may be spotted or rosetted, depending on the subspecies. It has litters of 2 to 4 kittens and the gestation period can vary from 65 to 70 days.. The Leopard Cat can climb trees skillfully. It is also able to swim, but will seldom do so. This cat is nocturnal, and during the day it spends its time in dens that may be hollow trees, cavities under roots, or caves. It spends time out during the day in areas where there are no humans. The inclusion of the United States in the list is based on occasional sightings in the southwest, particularly in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. In the early 1900s, the jaguars range extended as far north as the Grand Canyon, and as far west as Southern California.[45] The jaguar is a protected species in the United States under the Endangered Species Act, which has stopped the shooting of the animal for its pelt. In 2004, wildlife officials in Arizona photographed and documented jaguars in the southern part of the state. For any permanent population to thrive, protection from killing, an adequate prey base, and connectivity with Mexican populations are essential.[51] On February 25, 2009 a 118 lb Jaguar was caught, radio-collared and released in an area southwest of Tucson, Arizona; this is farther north than had previously been expected and represents a sign that there may be a permanent breeding population of Jaguars within southern Arizona. It was later confirmed that the animal is indeed ...

Jaguars are not specialized with their food, but eat almost anything they get: big and small mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and livestock. It is an ambush predator. When hunting, they usually try to secretly get very close to the prey, and then the jaguar suddenly jumps at it and throws it down. The jaguar bites the skull of its prey to kill it. It then takes the prey to a safe place and eats it. After a pregnancy of about 100 days the female gives birth to usually 1 - 4 babies. The young leave their family after 1-2 years, and they become mature at about 3 years. Jaguars can live up to 10-12 years old in freedom, but in captivity (such as in zoos) they can live to 20-22 years old. ...
Offensive tackle Branden Albert reportedly told the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday that he will come back to training camp and reverse his decision to retire. According to the Jags official ESPN beat writer, Mike DiRocco, its unlikely that the Jags will take the veteran back. The Jaguars keep his rights, but if Albert decides he really, truly wants to play again, they have to either pay or cut him.. Albert was working out in the team facility on the players day off on July 30 and tight end Marcedes Lewis said he spoke with Albert that day and they talked about the upcoming season. He would owe Jacksonville $3.4 million in signing-bonus money if he stayed retired. Albert announced his retirement last week after only five days in training camp.. The Jaguars are now in Foxborough, Massachusetts, for two days of joint practices with the New England Patriots, and a team spokesman said the team would not comment on the situation. He did not participate in the Jaguars voluntary offseason ...

Leopards are survivors. Despite a changing world, the leopard has been able to maintain a surprisingly large population, especially in comparison to other big cats. While nobody knows the exact number of leopards currently on the planet, its estimated that there are roughly half a million - ten times more than lions, tigers, and cheetahs combined. The majority are found in the grasslands of sub-Saharan Africa, most likely where the modern-day leopard originated hundreds of thousands of years ago - but they are also widespread, covering much of Africa, the Middle East, as well as eastern and southern Asia. They have settled in terrains that range from tropical rainforests and deserts, to alpine mountains and the outskirts of cities. Of the big cats, the leopard is the only known species that lives in both desert and rainforest environments.. What makes the leopard so successful? They are not as fast as cheetahs, nor as strong as lions. But the leopard is adaptable, able to acclimate and modify ...

The guilty lion will be kept in a zoo for life while the others will be released back into the Gir sanctuary, the officials told BBC Hindi. Wildlife expert Ruchi Dave told the BBC that the tests involved studying the pug marks and faecal matter of the lions. The officials are also studying the animals behaviour. Man eating lions usually get aggressive at the sight of a human being, she said. Another wildlife expert Revtubha Raizada said the man-eating lion would be caged for the rest of its life, as it was too unsafe to release it back into the wild ...
Lions are the only cats that live in groups, called prides. Prides are family units that may include up to three males, a dozen or so females, and their young. All of a prides lionesses are related and female cubs typically stay with the group as they age. Young males eventually leave and may establish their own prides by taking over a group headed by another male.Only male lions boast manes, the impressive fringe of long hair that encircles their heads. Males defend the prides territory. They mark the area with urine, roar menacingly to warn intruders, and chase off animals that encroach on their turf. ...
The wild cat (Felis silvestris), sometimes wildcat or wild-cat, is a small predator native to Europe. It is also found in the western part of Asia, and Africa. It is a hunter of small mammals, birds, and other creatures of a similar size. There are several subspecies that occur in different world regions. This includes the ubiquitous domestic cat, which has been introduced to every habitable continent and most of the worlds larger islands. It has become feral in many of those environments.. In its native environment, the wild cat is adaptable to a variety of habitat types. These habitats are land, open forest, and steppe. Although a domesticated breed shows a great variety of shapes and colors, wild individuals are medium-brown with black stripes. They are between 20 to 32 inches (50 and 80 cm) long and weigh between 6 to 13 pounds (3 and 6 kg). The African subspecies tends to be a little smaller and a lighter brown in color.. Wild cats are extremely timid. They avoid coming too close to ...

The naming of many saber-toothed species-the most famous being the genus Smilodon, or the saber-toothed cat-sounds like a bit of a macabre joke. The pearly grins of these prehistoric predators might have been the last sight of any creatures that got close enough to appreciate them.. But not all saber-toothed things were aggressively predatory. Some, like the marsupial Thylacosmilus atrox, may have occupied a different niche. As a new study published in the journal PeerJ reports, the pouched, cat-resembling creature may have been more of a scavenger, carefully slicing already-dead carcasses a few million years ago with its ferocious-looking dentition. But it wasnt the eponymous canine teeth that led to this conclusion-it was what the animal was missing.. Perhaps the most famous of the saber-tooths is Smilodon fatalis, an apex predator during the Pleistocene, that has very little relation with the marsupial Thylacosmilus (or with modern cats, for that matter), despite their outward similarities. ...
In blog years, I was but a peewee sized-fetus until The New York Times profiled me, and now? I am a fetus with legs so I can walk and wear shoes adorned by little Spanish men. You must be wondering how this relates to leopard print nails. It doesnt, really.. But…about six months ago I tweeted to my humble and a half following (half because I follow myself from my birth-given names account:) I hope someone asks me what my favorite color is so I can answer leopard print. Lots of people retweeted me, so I learned my lesson: Not leopard? Not interested. I then went off and paired my leopard print vest with my leopard print tights and my leopard print blouse with my leopard print shorts. All to match my leopard print soul. This in turn induced fascination onto mefingernails. A few weeks ago, The Cherry Blossom Girl posted a DIY about her dyslexic french manicure. Sure, you can call the manicure what it really is: a half moon, but isnt it more fun to describe fashion trends using adjectives ...
Downloadable! This thesis consists of an introduction and four papers exploring various aspects of the Namibian economy. These aspects cover shadow pricing, environmental valuation and capital market development in Namibia. Paper I estimates the shadow prices of capital, labour and foreign exchange for the Namibian economy. The results suggest that the shadow price of capital for Namibia is 7.2%. The economic costs of Namibian labour, as a share of financial costs, are 32% for urban semi- and unskilled labour, and 54% for rural semi- and unskilled labour. The economic cost of foreign labour as a share of financial costs is 59%. The estimated shadow exchange rate factor is 4% for the Namibian economy. Paper II derives a set of accounting price ratios (APRs) for the various economic sectors of Namibia by using the Semi-Input-Output (SIO) Technique. An APR is the ratio between the market or financial price and the efficiency or economic value of a specific commodity or sector, which is useful for the
A graceful hunter, leopard epitomizes stealth and predation. Leopards ability to go undetected enables it to prey on the most sensitive of animals like gazelles and dogs. The most successful hunter amongst big cats, leopard spares nothing - takes everything as prey from insects to birds, reptiles, monkeys, fish and deer. Its wide prey base supplemented by its ability to survive in diverse environments ensures leopards survival beyond the realm of its peers. Despite rare predation by the tiger in India, leopard enjoys greater success since it survives in areas with scarce water. The same is true in Africa where conflicts with lions and hyenas are won by the leopards terrific ability to carry prey up to three times its weight into trees, beyond the reach of its competitors. Its tree climbing abilities are the best among cats and alongside a strong swimming ability make it the best hunter in all of Africa, surviving in drought and tough climatic conditions where others perish ...

The lion may be the king of the jungle, but in the Americas, the jaguar rules. Jaguars used to roam as far north as Arizona and Texas, all the way down through Central America and South America. In the early 1800s, their population reached over 60,000, but hunting and agricultural development throughout the mid-1900s led to mass population declines.

According to a recent report by the Bolivian Environment Forum, authorities in the Andean nation seized 800 jaguar teeth between 2014 and 2016 - putting the number of jaguars killed around 200 or around the same degree as the 1980s when hunting the large felines was still legal.
