John Davies Enys (1837-1912) and Charles Enys (1840-1891) both left their family estate in Penryn, Cornwall to farm in New Zealand. In October 1864 they purchased Castle Hill Station in Canterbury. John was very knowledgeable in the fields of botany, zoology and entomology and several New Zealand plants and animals have been named in his honour. John was a member of the original board of trustees of Canterbury Museum and was great friends with Julius von Haast from whom RAMM also has a collection of moa bones. This moa bone was donated along with several others in May 1868. It is probable that John brought these bones home with him in 1867 but it is likely to have been his father or older brother who actually made the donation as John returned to New Zealand in January 1868. Although Johns first find of moa bones was at Forest Creek Hut in 1863, it is most likely that RAMMs bones were found on the Castle Hill Estate. Both brothers returned to Cornwall when Charles became ill in 1891. The Enys estate

How could the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) threaten our national icon, the New Zealand Kiwi (Apteryx) ? This submission to a well recognised Government Conservation Agency explains it all:...
Current evolutionary consensus, based on both molecular and morphological data, suggests that there are two broad subdivisions at the base of living birds (Neornithes), the neognaths (Neognathae) and palaeognathous birds (Palaeognathae)
Background: Bird mitogenomes differ from other vertebrates in gene rearrangement. The most common avian gene order, identified first in Gallus gallus, is considered ancestral for all Aves. However, other rearrangements including a duplicated control region and neighboring genes have been reported in many representatives of avian orders. The repeated regions can be easily overlooked due to inappropriate DNA amplification or genome sequencing. This raises a question about the actual prevalence of mitogenomic duplications and the validity of the current view on the avian mitogenome evolution. In this context, Palaeognathae is especially interesting because is sister to all other living birds, i.e. Neognathae. So far, a unique duplicated region has been found in one palaeognath mitogenome, that of Eudromia elegans. Results: Therefore, we applied an appropriate PCR strategy to look for omitted duplications in other palaeognaths. The analyses revealed the duplicated control regions with adjacent genes in

Just to clarify, I didnt mean to give the impression that all (or even most) paleontologists dismissing the hypothesis of any kind of hippo-whale clade (Cetancodonta or Whippomorpha). The moa were large flightless birds. They lived only in New Zealand, and are now all extinct.. There were eleven species (in six genera) of Moa.[1] The largest and best known were the genus Dinornis, which grew up to 3.6 meters (12 feet) tall, and weighed as much as 230 kilograms (510 pounds).. The group of birds to which the moa belong had been in existence since the Cretaceous period. The Māori people arrived in New Zealand from Oceania about a thousand years ago. Then, moas lived in large numbers, especially on South Island. Archaeological sites with evidence of moa hunting are all over New Zealand. The moas became extinct about five hundred years ago.[2] The moas had survived being hunted by Haasts eagle. However, they could not survive being hunted for food by the Maoris.. Recent extinctions (also mostly birds) have been caused by habitat change and introduced species.. ...

The role of pigments in generating the colour and maculation of birds eggs is well characterized, whereas the effects of the eggshells nanostructure on the visual appearance of eggs are little studied. Here, we examined the nanostructural basis of glossiness of tinamou eggs. Tinamou eggs are well known for their glossy appearance, but the underlying mechanism responsible for this optical effect is unclear. Using experimental manipulations in conjunction with angle-resolved spectrophotometry, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and chemical analyses, we show that the glossy appearance of tinamou eggshells is produced by an extremely smooth cuticle, composed of calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate and, potentially, organic compounds such as proteins and pigments. Optical calculations corroborate surface smoothness as the main factor producing gloss. Furthermore, we reveal the presence of weak iridescence on eggs of the great tinamou (Tinamus major), an optical effect never ...
Background: Boccia is a Paralympic sport played by athletes with severe neurological impairments affecting all four limbs. Impaired manual dexterity (MD) and intralimb coordination (ILC) may limit individuals ability to perform certain activities such as grasping, releasing, or manipulating objects, which are essential tasks for daily life or to participate in Para sports such as boccia. However, there are currently no specific instruments available to assess hand-arm coordination in boccia players with severe cerebral palsy (CP).Purpose: To design new sport-specific coordination tests to assess impaired manual dexterity and intra-limb coordination in boccia players; afterwards, quantify to what extent their coordination is impaired compared to a control group without neurological impairments. Methods: Seventy-three recreational boccia players with severe CP (BC1: age = 34.01 ± 16.43 yr; BC2: age = 33.97 ± 14.29 yr), and 19 healthy adults (age = 27.89 ± 7.08 yr) completed the test battery. Nutrient arteries enter limb bones through discrete foramina on the shafts. They are required for bone remodelling in response to mechanical loading and dynamic forces imposed by locomotion. The cross-sectional area of the nutrient foramen of the femur represents an index of blood flow rate to the shaft and thus provides insight into the animals level of activity. Morphometric data on femoral length, mass and foramen size from 100 extant bird species and eight extinct moa species were analysed allometrically and phylogenetically. The nutrient foramen blood flow index (Qi) and femur mass (Mf) increase with body mass (Mb). At 1 kg body mass, cursorial species have approximately 2.1 times higher Qi and 1.9 times heavier Mf than volant species. The scaling of Qi on Mf is independent of the primary mode of locomotion, but the ratio Qi/Mf decreases significantly in larger birds, although absolute Qi increases. The overall avian equation for Qi on Mb is not significantly different from previous data ...
The longstanding story of ratite evolution was that they share a common flightless ancestor that lived in Gondwana, whose descendants were carried by continental drift to their present locations. Supporting this idea, some studies based on morphology, immunology and DNA sequencing reported that ratites are monophyletic.[10] Cracrafts (1974) biogeographic vicariance hypothesis suggested that ancestral flightless paleognaths, the ancestors of ratites, were present and widespread in Gondwana during the Late Cretaceous. As the supercontinent fragmented due to plate tectonics, they were carried by plate movements to their current positions and evolved into the species present today.[17] The earliest known ratite fossils date to the Paleocene epoch about 56 million years ago (e.g. Diogenornis, a possible early relative of the rhea).[18] However, more primitive paleognaths are known from several million years earlier,[19] and the classification and membership of the Ratitae itself is uncertain. Modern Kapiti Island is best known as a sanctuary for wildlife. It is one of New Zealands longest and most exciting conservation stories, beginning in 1897. Projects here to eradicate possums and rats, and to increase or establish populations of endangered birds such as the little spotted kiwi, have put the country on the world map for conservation management and provided models to follow in other parts of the country. Animal pests are eradicated, weeds controlled, and the forests are returning.

Sporting a sideways turning bill, the endemic wrybill (Anarhynchus frontalis) or ngutuparore is one of New Zealands bird oddities - the only bird in the world with such a feature. It uses the bill like a hook to gather insect larvae and eggs from beneath stones, or as a spoon to scoop crustaceans from mud.. The small wrybill has a pale grey back and wings and a white front, with a black chest band during breeding. It measures 20 centimetres and weighs just 55 grams. It breeds in inland areas of the South Island during in spring and summer, then flies to North Island harbours until the end of winter. Its main stop-off is the Firth of Thames, winter home to 50-60% of the wrybill population. As the time of departure approaches, wrybills gather in large flocks and perform elaborate aerial ballets.. Wrybills frequent the inland shingle riverbeds of the eastern South Island. They nest from August to January, laying two camouflaged grey-blue speckled eggs among the river stones. They often lay a ...

New Zealand: A Wildlife Extinction Hot Spot. Like the fauna and flora of the Galapagos, Hawaii and Madagascar, many of the animals and plants of New Zealand are unique. Some 85 million years ago these islands separated from the great southern continent of Gondwanaland and evolution took an independent path. In the absence of land mammals, birds and reptiles dominated the terrestrial fauna, filling ecological niches occupied elsewhere by our hairy cousins. A cooler climate and lack of mammalian predators enabled some species to become huge and flightless allowing them to exploit a wide range of climatic zones, habitats and food sources (McGlone 2009). Some, like the moas (Dinorthidae) and Haasts eagle (Harpagornis moorei) have become extinct, while others like kiwi (Apteryx spp.) and the kakapo (Strigops habroptila) are struggling to survive in the face of enormous pressure from habitat loss and a host of introduced mammalian predators. Since the arrival of humans some 750-1000 years ago, nearly ...

The ferry ride arrived in Picton at 11:45am and cost $61NZ/$48US. Then we got a TA hiker deal with the water taxi to Ship Cove. Its a $50NZ/$37US one that leaves at 1:30pm and takes about an hour longer than the $75NZ/$56US one because it delivers the mail. We wanted to save the money and figured saving $25NZ/$19 for an hour difference was worth it. During the 1.5hr layover of the two boats, we went to the Picton iSite and bought our $18NZ/$13US passes for the Queen Charlotte Track. Then I inquired about the logistics for doing the Abel Tasman walk, which is one of New Zealands Great Walks, but not part of the TA. There are additional side trips Ive had my eye on to do along the way, and the Abel Tasman (37mi/60km) was a major one. Since its one of New Zealands 9 Great Walks, it is quite popular, and the campsites tend to be booked solid because it is the beginning of summer tourist season. Well, I got super lucky and was able to find a way to make it happen! The dates worked out to fit it ...

Animals can show different responses to fear for example by playing dead when there is no possibility to escape. This response is called tonic immobility (TI) and is a well-established test of fear to evaluate fearfulness. Long durations of TI are generally considered as high levels of fearfulness. Physiological changes observed during tonic immobility suggest that there are changes in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) strongly involved in this process. The main objective for this study was to analyse duration of tonic immobility and heart and ventilation rate during tonic immobility in three different species; domesticated High Andean chickens (Gallus gallus), wild-caught Ornate Tinamous (Nothoprocta ornata) and Chilean Tinamous born in captivity (Nothoprocta perdicaria). In this study needle electrodes were used to measure heart and ventilation rate. The time following induction of tonic immobility (i.e. after holding the bird on its back for 15 s) was characterized by a large increase in ...

Bending zones are clearly recognisable in both the dorsal and ventral bars of the upper bill in Calidris species, which are neognathous rhynchokinetic birds. The position of these bending zones coincides with the bending point determined from behavioural analyses (Gerritsen, 1988). The bending zones in the palaeognathous species are not clear, although the bars are relatively more slender than in Calidris. All the palaeognathous species analysed in this study have the thinnest zones in the dorsal bar near the caudal or rostral part of the dorsal bar, outside the effective bending limits of the upper bill. This indicates that no clear bending zone is present in the dorsal bar of the Palaeognathae. Although the thickness curve of the ostrich shows some resemblance to that of the Calidris species, note that the slender part is directly behind the rostrum maxillae. This rostrum is very thick and semicircular, which makes this region very rigid and difficult to bend. The ventral bar of the ...
Ornithologists variously described the New Zealand falcon as an aberrant hobby or as allied to three South American species (F. deiroleucus, F. rufigularis, and F. femoralis); however molecular phylogenetic studies show that it is most closely related to the South American Aplomado falcon[4] Two forms are apparent from their significantly different sizes with the larger race in the South Island and the smaller in the North Island. Although neutral genetic markers show a recent history of these two forms, the substantial size difference is likely to be driven by ecological adaptation. Conservation management had already avoided mixing of the North Island (Falco novaeseelandiae ferox) and South Island (Falco novaeseelandiae novaeseelandiae) populations.[5] ...
Wellington is a showcase of conservation projects. An example is Matiu (Somes Island) in Wellington Harbour. Until 1995 it was used as an animal quarantine station. Today it is a sanctuary for endangered species. The ancient native reptile, tuatara, has been released there, along with several bird species including kākāriki (parrots).. Further north, off the west coast, Mana Island is being restored. A range of seabirds and plant species have been successfully reintroduced. Both Matiu and Mana are open sanctuaries, which the public are free to visit. They complement the long established closed sanctuary on Kāpiti Island (permits are required for a visit), where native birds, including the rare kōkako and takahē, thrive.. Gold kiwis have smooth bronze-colored skin and are pointy at one end. The flesh is mustard colored and quite flavorful. The gold kiwi is also higher in both vitamins C, E and lutein/zeaxanthin. New hybrids include the baby kiwis which are green, smooth, about the size of table grapes, and eaten much like them. When you shop for kiwi, choose plump ones that yield slightly to the touch. Avoid those that are shriveled, moldy or have soft spots. You can easily ripen kiwifruit by leaving it at room temperature for a few days or to speed up the process, put the kiwifruit in a dry paper bag along with an apple or banana.. Most people dont realize that you can eat the kiwi skin after rubbing off the fuzz. The skin is actually quite nutritious. If you want to skip the skin, the easiest way to prepare a kiwi is to simply slice it in half and scoop ...
Christchurch is one of the prime tourist spots in New Zealand. In spite of the way that four monstrous seismic tremors between the period 2010 and 2011 had totally left the city in ruins, it has still figured out how to spring back to life. You can observe the resurrection of the city all over. Beginning from new structures to shopping centers everything has been reproduced once more. The fundamental attractions of the city incorporate the excellent Botanic Gardens where you can appreciate the exquisite strolling tracks, centers, and agriculture shows. The nursery is likewise home to the absolute most seasoned, tallest, and biggest trees in New Zealand. Investigate both the new and old Christchurch on the gondola. Significant numbers of Scottish people also settled in New Zealand. Approximately 20 percent of the original European settler population of New Zealand came from Scotland, and Scottish influence is still visible around the country. The South Island city of Dunedin, in particular, is known for its Scottish heritage and was named as a tribute to Edinburgh by the citys Scottish founders.. The majority of Scottish immigrants settled in the South Island. All over New Zealand, the Scots developed different means to bridge the old homeland and the new. Many Caledonian societies were formed, well over 100 by the early twentieth century, who helped maintain Scottish culture and traditions. From the 1860s, these societies organised annual Caledonian Games throughout New Zealand. The Games were sports meets that brought together Scottish settlers and the wider New Zealand public. In so doing, the Games gave Scots a path to cultural integration as Scottish New Zealanders. In the 1961 census there were ...

The Mainland Eagles Academy and logo is inspired by a specie of eagle that once lived in New Zealand, called the Haasts Eagle. The Haasts Eagle only lived on the South Island and were considered to be the equivalent of a lion in New Zealand.. The Haasts Eagle was the biggest, baddest most magnificent eagle ever to have existed in the world. It is known in Maori legend as Pouakai and there is little doubt that early settlers would have fallen victim to this most terrifying of aerial predators! In Māori mythology, the pouakai or poukai is a monstrous bird, and are even depicted in early rock-shelter paintings in South Canterbury.. The Mainland Eagles Academy logo represents the Academy being a South Island Regional Academy with the power, strength and majesty of the Haasts Eagle representing how our athletes train, play and approach life in general.. ...

I dont see anything different here than what happens in morphological analyses. Adding genes is better even if it causes more homoplasy, because all that means is that the topology isnt as well supported as we thought, and the non-random noise may be a signal of the true phylogeny. The morphological equivalent is a Sereno analysis, where he purposefully excludes homoplasic characters so that his clades appear better supported. I dont think most people agree with this tactic, so I dont think youd agree to it in molecular analyses either. And again, I agree its important to get the algorithms right, and indeed more important than adding more data to crappy algorithms. Just as Id say it doesnt matter how much data you throw into a supertree or an Adams consensus tree, the trees still crap. But I dont see how adding more data to a bad algorithm will necessarily cause greater node support and thus make the results of a larger bad analysis more misleading than those of a smaller bad ...

The idea of being in one location for such a long time is strange to many of us yachties, whove spent years traveling from place to place. Strange, but not necessarily bad. In some ways, I find it a refreshing change, a different sort of adventure. As we yachties tend to be an adaptable bunch (a useful quality for our way of life), many of us have embraced our unexpected bonus time in New Zealand as an opportunity to do more exploring here, and help the local economy in the meantime. This year, instead of having a tropical adventure, well have a sub-tropical, temperate, or an alpine adventure - maybe even all three! - as we set off to get to know this land that has taken us in during the pandemic. Eric and I, for example, recently returned from a fun two-week driving trip with a couple of our friends, around the central part of the North Island. More on that in another blog post. This week, about a dozen cruisers are embarking on a ski trip to the South Island. Others are currently scattered ...
