Paeonia lactiflora and Astragalus membranaceus are two popular traditional Chinese medicines, commonly used in Chinese herb prescription to treat liver disease. The extract prepared from the roots of Paeonia lactiflora and Astragalus membranaceus (PAE) demonstrated better hepatoprotective activity than the herbs used individually as shown in our previous studies. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of PAE on liver fibrosis induced by porcine serum (PS) in rats and to explore its possible mechanisms. Liver fibrosis was induced in male Wistar rats by injection with PS intraperitoneally. The rats were randomly divided into a normal control group, a liver fibrosis model group and a PAE (40, 80, 160 mg•kg-1) treated group. After a 16-week treatment, PAE-treated rats showed significantly reduced liver damage and symptoms of liver fibrosis upon pathological examination. Administration of PAE significantly decreased serum HA, PC III levels, and content of hydroxyproline in the liver ...
After soaking the Chinese Tree Peonies from Ali Express, some of them started to look promising. As you can see below on the tree peonies with long stems and short roots, after soaking them in water I started to notice some white or light colored nodules on the sides of the tree peony stems. These may turn into growth nodules, from which roots or stems may be generated in the spring. Also I figured out which tree peonies these are supposed to be. The one tree peony with a short stem and long roots is supposed to be the blue tree peony I ordered. The other 5 tree peonies with long stems and short roots were 2 yellow/orange tree peonies and the other 3 were the ones that were supposed to be the Ali Express Chinese Tree Peonies $5.52 for 3!. I had ordered 3 sets of 3 of these peonies. So I should have gotten 9 of those tree peonies, but they only sent 3. So I opened a dispute with Ali Express for that particular order ...
Like most plants that are native to temperate and boreal regions, Paeonia lactiflora blooms in late spring; it is a perennial that requires a long period of chilling. In order to study the biochemical and physiological changes of herbaceous peony in response to low temperature, six indices related to cold tolerance were determined over 20 different periods of natural conditions, and morphological and phytophenological observations were made. A larger amount of soluble sugars and reducing sugars and a smaller amount of starch were found during dormancy in comparison with the growing season. The concentration of soluble and reducing sugars increased in buds when P. lactiflora plants were subjected to low temperature from 14 November to 4 January. Starch content decreased significantly over the same period. Maximum soluble sugar content peaked later than reducing sugar, on 14 January and 24 December, respectively. Sugars appeared to play an important role in bud development and dormancy. Soluble ...
Moutan cortex radicis (MCR), the root bark of Paeonia suffruticosa, has been widely used as a traditional herb. In this study, we evaluated whether the MCR extract and two active compounds of the bark, paeoniflorin (paeo) and oxypaeoniflorin (oxypaeo), alleviate lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory responses in RAW264.7 cells and whether they controlled TLR signaling pathway. RAW264.7 cells were treated with the MCR extract or two active compounds in the presence or absence of LPS. The extract and two active compounds inhibited LPS-stimulated nitric oxide (NO) production and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) gene expression. Additionally, the extract and two active compounds suppressed inflammatory cytokine secretion and gene expression in LPS-stimulated cells. The extract and two active compounds alleviated NF-κB activation by regulating upstream genes in TLR signaling pathway. In addition, the extract and two active compounds decreased phosphorylation of ERK and p38 MAPK. These results
Herbaceous peony is one of the most famous traditional flowers in China, with more than 4000 years of cultivation history. However, most peonies are diploid. The present study aimed at exploring an effective way to produce polyploidy using seeds or buds from three herbaceous peony cultivars (Fen Yu Nu, Zhu Sha Pan and Zhong Sheng Fen) by colchicine treatment. For seeds, NaClO (4%) solution was a more suitable disinfectant than HgCl2 (0.1%) solution, and the optimum disinfection time was 12 min. The best induction medium for Zhu Sha Pan was 1/2 MS + 0.5 mg L-1 6‑BA + 0.2 mg L-1 GA3. Three chimeras were obtained from explants of Fen Yu Nu, at a rate of 7.14%, when seeds were first immersed in 0.1% colchicine solution for 12 h and then zygotic embryos were transferred to culture medium. For underground buds, HgCl2 (0.1%) solution was a more suitable disinfectant than NaClO (4%) solution, and the optimum disinfection time was 10 min. The best induction medium for Zhong Sheng Fen was ...

Its anti-inflammatory effect is associated with regulating G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) signaling. The aim of this study was to explore the expression change of G-protein-coupled receptor kinase 2 (GRK2) in fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) and the effect of Pae. Pae was obtained and purified from the roots of Paeonia lactiflora. We investigated the expression of GRK2 in synovium during the inflammatory process and assessed the effects of a specific GRK2 inhibitor and Pae on proliferation, cAMP level, and protein kinase A (PKA) ...

Herbaceous peony (Paeonia lactiflora Pall.) is a traditional famous flower, but its poor inflorescence stem quality seriously constrains the development of the cut flower. Mechanical strength is an important characteristic of stems, which not only affects plant lodging, but also plays an important role in stem bend or break. In this paper, the mechanical strength, morphological indices and microstructure of P. lactiflora development inflorescence stems were measured and observed. The results showed that the mechanical strength of inflorescence stems gradually increased, and that the diameter of inflorescence stem was a direct indicator in estimating mechanical strength. Simultaneously, with the development of inflorescence stem, the number of vascular bundles increased, the vascular bundle was arranged more densely, the sclerenchyma cell wall thickened, and the proportion of vascular bundle and pith also increased. On this basis, cellulose and lignin contents were determined, PlCesA3, PlCesA6 and
The peony is among the longest-used flowers in Eastern culture. Along with the plum blossom, it is a traditional floral symbol of China, where the Paeonia suffruticosa is called 牡丹 (mǔdān). It is also known as 富貴花 (fùguìhuā) "flower of riches and honour" or 花王 (huawang) "king of the flowers", and is used symbolically in Chinese art.[29] In 1903, the Qing dynasty declared the peony as the national flower. Currently, the Republic of China government in Taiwan designates the plum blossom as the national flower, while the Peoples Republic of China government has no legally designated national flower. In 1994, the peony was proposed as the national flower after a nationwide poll, but the National Peoples Congress failed to ratify the selection. In 2003, another selection process has begun, but to date, no choice has been made. The ancient Chinese city Luoyang has a reputation as a cultivation centre for the peonies. Throughout Chinese history, peonies in Luoyang have been said to ...

Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and its metabolite prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) can potentially affect most of the events in cancer development, including promotion of proliferation, resistance to apoptosis, angiogenesis, immune suppression and invasion. However, worldwide attention has predominantly centered on the cardiovascular toxicity of selective COX-2 inhibitors. Paeonol is a major active extract from the root bark of Paeonia suffruticosa Andrews with anti‑inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-allergic, anti-oxidation and antitumor effects. In the present study, we investigated the underlying mechanisms of paeonol in inducing apoptosis and aimed to ascertain whether its antitumor effect is associated with a reduction in COX-2 expression and a decrease in the levels of PGE2 in colorectal cancer cells. We observed that paeonol inhibited cell proliferation and induced apoptosis in a dose- and time-dependent manner in colorectal cancer cells, which was associated with a reduction in COX-2 expression and ...
With your kind indulgence, the Phactor shall feature another species of peony (it was either that or another Magnolia). Actually the most spectacular floral display in our gardens right now is the dark-red flowered tree peony featured on the blog banner; its just wow! This peony seems rather diminutive in contrast, but the fern-leafed peony (Paeonia tenuifolia) is quite a handsome herbaceous plant that forms a clump of stems with highly dissected foliage (but not real ferny actually), although handsome, and each stem ends in a 7-8 cm diameter bright scarlet flower, probably the reddest of spring flowers. They are very showy and slightly earlier than the tree peonies in most years. This is a very nice species of peony for almost any garden, although they can be a bit pricey (ours came via an end of season sale for about 1/3 regular price but at the time (they were dormant) who knew exactly what they were. So they were planted, and forgotten about, until the brush-like foliage poked up the ...

Paeoniflorin (PF) is an active ingredient of Radix Paeoniae, which is known to exert neuroprotective effects. protects PC12 cells against glutamate-induced neurotoxicity PSI-7977 possibly through the inhibition of the expression of mitochondrial apoptosis-associated proteins. (Cyt Pall.). It has been reported that PF exerts neuroprotective effects in models of cerebral ischemia (17C22) and in models of cell injury induced by H2O2 (23), 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP+) (24), glutamate (25), A25C35 (26) and lipopolysaccharide (27). The effects of PF have been attributed to PSI-7977 the involvement of multiple modulatory pathways, such as anti-oxidative stress and anti-inflammatory. Moreover, our recent study suggested that PF exerted stable and potent neuroprotective effects against cerebral ischemic injury and protected against N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-induced cell apoptosis Rabbit polyclonal to WAS.The Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) is a disorder that results from a monogenic defect that ...
The Peony is an extremely hardy and ornamental flower that is native to China, but grows wild in southern Europe and is cultivated for its beauty in gardens everywhere. The Peony is the sole genus in the flowering Paeoniaceae plant family, but in the past, the Peonies were often classified in the Ranunculaceae (buttercup) family. Most species are herbaceous perennial plants, but some are woody shrubs. Because of its hardiness, it can grow in almost any soil but prefers deep, rich, well-drained loam in sun or partial shade, avoiding positions where frost damage is likely, and it propagates very quickly. In the autumn, the root is lifted from cultivated plants of at least two (preferably four to five) years of age; and after the root bark is stripped away, it is boiled and dried for use in herbal medicine (and has been for thousands of years) as a pungent, bitter, analgesic herb that cleanses and cools both the blood and liver and reduces pain. The genus, Paeonia, is supposed to have been named ...
The time course of paeoniflorin in the cortex of normal and cerebral ischemia-reperfusion rats, following intravenous administration of Paeoniae Radix extract at a dose of 60 mg/kg of paeoniflorin, was determined using high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) assay. The results showed that paeoniflorin could penetrate through the blood-brain barrier to reach the cortex, and that the injuries of ischemia-reperfusion could play an important role in pharmacokinetic process of paeoniflorin in the cortex after intravenous administration of Paeoniae Radix extract. The cortex concentrations of paconiflorin in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion rats were lower 5 min after dosing and declined more slowly than that in normal control. So extraordinary is the flower that it still distinguishes itself today as the symbol for nobility and sophistication. Of the many legends connected to the Peony, is the one about the Empress of Catai who, wanting to impose her wishes on flowers and trees, ordered the flowers in her imperial gardens to bloom together. The Peony was the only one to refuse, and was banished to the mountains, amidst the snow. But the flower continued to bloom, so the Empress recalled it from exile, crowning the Peony as the Queen of flowers. Its name, in Chinese, means pretty: and LErbolario dedicates this line of formulas, rich in particularly effective active ingredients, to personal beauty. In fact, from Peony root we have obtained a fluid extract enriched with polysaccharides that provide cell membranes with plenty of protection. From the same root, left to macerate in Maize germ oil, LErbolario Laboratories have obtained an extract that makes skin radiant, protecting it from premature ageing. Lastly, from ...

We previously reported that paeoniflorin but not albiflorin, components of peony root, produced ameliorative effects on scopolamine−induced spatial cognitive impairment in rats.In this study, we examined the effects of paeoniflorin and muscarinic receptor antagonists on long−term potentiation(LTP)of population spike recorded from the CA1 region of rat hippocampal slices.Bath applications of an M,SUB,1,/SUB,− and M,SUB,2,/SUB,−receptor antagonist scopolamine and a selective M,SUB,1,/SUB,−receptor antagonist pirenzepine, at a concentration of 10 μM, significantly suppressed LTP, whereas AF−DX116, a selective M,SUB,2,/SUB,−receptor antagonist, failed to affect it.Paeoniflorin(0.1−1μM), which alone was ineffective on LTP induction, significantly reversed the suppressive effects of scopolamine and pirenzepine(10μM).In contrast, albiflorin(0.1−1μM)had no effect on the scopolamine−induced LTP suppression. These results suggest that paeoniflorin reversal of the muscarinic ...
