Paeonia lactiflora and Astragalus membranaceus are two popular traditional Chinese medicines, commonly used in Chinese herb prescription to treat liver disease. The extract prepared from the roots of Paeonia lactiflora and Astragalus membranaceus (PAE) demonstrated better hepatoprotective activity than the herbs used individually as shown in our previous studies. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of PAE on liver fibrosis induced by porcine serum (PS) in rats and to explore its possible mechanisms. Liver fibrosis was induced in male Wistar rats by injection with PS intraperitoneally. The rats were randomly divided into a normal control group, a liver fibrosis model group and a PAE (40, 80, 160 mg•kg-1) treated group. After a 16-week treatment, PAE-treated rats showed significantly reduced liver damage and symptoms of liver fibrosis upon pathological examination. Administration of PAE significantly decreased serum HA, PC III levels, and content of hydroxyproline in the liver ...

After soaking the Chinese Tree Peonies from Ali Express, some of them started to look promising. As you can see below on the tree peonies with long stems and short roots, after soaking them in water I started to notice some white or light colored nodules on the sides of the tree peony stems. These may turn into growth nodules, from which roots or stems may be generated in the spring. Also I figured out which tree peonies these are supposed to be. The one tree peony with a short stem and long roots is supposed to be the blue tree peony I ordered. The other 5 tree peonies with long stems and short roots were 2 yellow/orange tree peonies and the other 3 were the ones that were supposed to be the Ali Express Chinese Tree Peonies $5.52 for 3!. I had ordered 3 sets of 3 of these peonies. So I should have gotten 9 of those tree peonies, but they only sent 3. So I opened a dispute with Ali Express for that particular order ...
Like most plants that are native to temperate and boreal regions, Paeonia lactiflora blooms in late spring; it is a perennial that requires a long period of chilling. In order to study the biochemical and physiological changes of herbaceous peony in response to low temperature, six indices related to cold tolerance were determined over 20 different periods of natural conditions, and morphological and phytophenological observations were made. A larger amount of soluble sugars and reducing sugars and a smaller amount of starch were found during dormancy in comparison with the growing season. The concentration of soluble and reducing sugars increased in buds when P. lactiflora plants were subjected to low temperature from 14 November to 4 January. Starch content decreased significantly over the same period. Maximum soluble sugar content peaked later than reducing sugar, on 14 January and 24 December, respectively. Sugars appeared to play an important role in bud development and dormancy. Soluble ...

Moutan cortex radicis (MCR), the root bark of Paeonia suffruticosa, has been widely used as a traditional herb. In this study, we evaluated whether the MCR extract and two active compounds of the bark, paeoniflorin (paeo) and oxypaeoniflorin (oxypaeo), alleviate lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory responses in RAW264.7 cells and whether they controlled TLR signaling pathway. RAW264.7 cells were treated with the MCR extract or two active compounds in the presence or absence of LPS. The extract and two active compounds inhibited LPS-stimulated nitric oxide (NO) production and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) gene expression. Additionally, the extract and two active compounds suppressed inflammatory cytokine secretion and gene expression in LPS-stimulated cells. The extract and two active compounds alleviated NF-κB activation by regulating upstream genes in TLR signaling pathway. In addition, the extract and two active compounds decreased phosphorylation of ERK and p38 MAPK. These results
Herbaceous peony is one of the most famous traditional flowers in China, with more than 4000 years of cultivation history. However, most peonies are diploid. The present study aimed at exploring an effective way to produce polyploidy using seeds or buds from three herbaceous peony cultivars (Fen Yu Nu, Zhu Sha Pan and Zhong Sheng Fen) by colchicine treatment. For seeds, NaClO (4%) solution was a more suitable disinfectant than HgCl2 (0.1%) solution, and the optimum disinfection time was 12 min. The best induction medium for Zhu Sha Pan was 1/2 MS + 0.5 mg L-1 6‑BA + 0.2 mg L-1 GA3. Three chimeras were obtained from explants of Fen Yu Nu, at a rate of 7.14%, when seeds were first immersed in 0.1% colchicine solution for 12 h and then zygotic embryos were transferred to culture medium. For underground buds, HgCl2 (0.1%) solution was a more suitable disinfectant than NaClO (4%) solution, and the optimum disinfection time was 10 min. The best induction medium for Zhong Sheng Fen was ...

Herbaceous peony (Paeonia lactiflora Pall.) is a traditional famous flower, but its poor inflorescence stem quality seriously constrains the development of the cut flower. Mechanical strength is an important characteristic of stems, which not only affects plant lodging, but also plays an important role in stem bend or break. In this paper, the mechanical strength, morphological indices and microstructure of P. lactiflora development inflorescence stems were measured and observed. The results showed that the mechanical strength of inflorescence stems gradually increased, and that the diameter of inflorescence stem was a direct indicator in estimating mechanical strength. Simultaneously, with the development of inflorescence stem, the number of vascular bundles increased, the vascular bundle was arranged more densely, the sclerenchyma cell wall thickened, and the proportion of vascular bundle and pith also increased. On this basis, cellulose and lignin contents were determined, PlCesA3, PlCesA6 and
The peony is among the longest-used flowers in Eastern culture. Along with the plum blossom, it is a traditional floral symbol of China, where the Paeonia suffruticosa is called 牡丹 (mǔdān). It is also known as 富貴花 (fùguìhuā) flower of riches and honour or 花王 (huawang) king of the flowers, and is used symbolically in Chinese art.[29] In 1903, the Qing dynasty declared the peony as the national flower. Currently, the Republic of China government in Taiwan designates the plum blossom as the national flower, while the Peoples Republic of China government has no legally designated national flower. In 1994, the peony was proposed as the national flower after a nationwide poll, but the National Peoples Congress failed to ratify the selection. In 2003, another selection process has begun, but to date, no choice has been made. The ancient Chinese city Luoyang has a reputation as a cultivation centre for the peonies. Throughout Chinese history, peonies in Luoyang have been said to ...

Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and its metabolite prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) can potentially affect most of the events in cancer development, including promotion of proliferation, resistance to apoptosis, angiogenesis, immune suppression and invasion. However, worldwide attention has predominantly centered on the cardiovascular toxicity of selective COX-2 inhibitors. Paeonol is a major active extract from the root bark of Paeonia suffruticosa Andrews with anti‑inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-allergic, anti-oxidation and antitumor effects. In the present study, we investigated the underlying mechanisms of paeonol in inducing apoptosis and aimed to ascertain whether its antitumor effect is associated with a reduction in COX-2 expression and a decrease in the levels of PGE2 in colorectal cancer cells. We observed that paeonol inhibited cell proliferation and induced apoptosis in a dose- and time-dependent manner in colorectal cancer cells, which was associated with a reduction in COX-2 expression and ...
With your kind indulgence, the Phactor shall feature another species of peony (it was either that or another Magnolia). Actually the most spectacular floral display in our gardens right now is the dark-red flowered tree peony featured on the blog banner; its just wow! This peony seems rather diminutive in contrast, but the fern-leafed peony (Paeonia tenuifolia) is quite a handsome herbaceous plant that forms a clump of stems with highly dissected foliage (but not real ferny actually), although handsome, and each stem ends in a 7-8 cm diameter bright scarlet flower, probably the reddest of spring flowers. They are very showy and slightly earlier than the tree peonies in most years. This is a very nice species of peony for almost any garden, although they can be a bit pricey (ours came via an end of season sale for about 1/3 regular price but at the time (they were dormant) who knew exactly what they were. So they were planted, and forgotten about, until the brush-like foliage poked up the ...

Recent experimental studies using herbal extracts have shown the possibility of peripheral nerve regeneration. This study aimed to investigate the effects of herbal extracts on peripheral nerve regeneration in a rat sciatic nerve injury model. A total of 53 rats were randomly assigned to a control group or one of four experimental groups. In all rats, the sciatic nerve was completely severed and microscopic epineural end-to-end neurorrhaphy was performed. Normal saline (2 mL) was topically applied to the site of nerve repair in the control group, whereas four different herbal extracts - 2 mL each of Astragalus mongholicus Bunge, Coptis japonica (Thunb.) Makino, Aconitum carmichaelii Debeaux, or Paeonia lactiflora Pall. - were topically applied to the site of nerve repair in each experimental group. Nerve conduction studies were performed at an average of 11.9 weeks after the operation, and conduction velocity and proximal and distal amplitudes were measured. Biopsies were performed at an average of 13.2
Tree peonies are hardy, deer-resistant shrubs that do well in garden beds and borders. A tree peony can bloom for 50 years or more, producing clusters of blossoms measuring up to 10 inches across during May and June.

The volatile constituents of the essential oils from the flower, leaf, and stem of Paeonia daurica Andrews were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. A total of 74 compounds were identified, constituting over 95.0%, 80.8%, and 98.2% of the oil composition of the flower, leaf, and stem of P. daurica, respectively. Aldehydes were shown to be the main group of constituents of the flower and stem parts, at 39.1% and 79.8%, respectively. However, the major group in the leaf oil was found to be oxygenated monoterpenes (43.5%). Salicylaldehyde (20.7% and 79.5%) was the major component of the flower and stem oils of P. daurica, respectively. Linalool (31.4%) was the main compound of the leaf oil. The antimicrobial activity of the isolated essential oils of the plant was also investigated, and they showed moderate antibacterial activity against tested microorganisms. ...

I also do not scarify Paeonia seed. Usually the first leaves appear after two periods of winter chill, but this year I was surprised to have a few germinate after one cold period. I transplant them into individual 4-inch pots when they go dormant the autumn after the leaves first grow, then plant them out in one more year. Paeonia seeds can, however, remain dormant longer and still be viable. When I mixed potting soil to move many plants from my old garden to the new one two and a half years ago, I included the soil from old abandoned seed pots. Now I have Paeonia seedlings coming up here and there in the new garden (mostly in completely inappropriate places) where I set in the other plants. Helleborus, in contrast, germinates much better when the seeds are sown fresh; they will germinate, generally just forming cotyledons, the following spring. This spring my old garden has hundreds of hellebores in flower, mostly the hybridus kind but also some species. They have not been watered for two ...

Andrews Brain is a novel written by E.L. Doctorow, published in 2014. It was Doctorows last novel before his death in 2015. Andrew, from a variety of mostly unknown locations, tells the story of his life and the events that have led him to where he has ended up in musings, ramblings, and occasionally fragmented tales. With seemingly no one else in his life, Andrew speaks to a person, presumably a psychiatrist only referred to as Doc, who often prompts Andrew further into his disjointed narrative. Between tragedies of love, thoughts about what consciousness is, and a series of bad luck incidents, Andrews story explores the questions of how much control individuals have over their own lives and how much of life is coincidence or fate. Andrew: the novels namesake and protagonist, a self-described cognitive scientist. Narrating the story, Andrew often switches between first and third person point of view story-telling to distance himself from painful memories. Even though he never discloses ...
Andrew is a young man who was riding his bike when he was hit by a car. He suffered a severe brain injury and has now been diagnosed with depression and anxiety as a result of his injury. He is also unable to sleep for long periods of time and finds it difficult to engage in everyday activities.. Our Personal injury team assisted in making a claim against the insurers of the driver responsible for the accident. Andrew was assessed as having capacity to deal with his everyday spending, but not capacity to weigh up how best to deal with his settlement award. As a result of his injury, Andrew is also prone to making impulsive financial decisions without thought as to how this will affect him in the long term.. Philippa Barton was appointed to act as Andrews Deputy and soon after Andrew received a settlement of £1.6 million from the insurers. With part of the settlement money, the Deputy purchased a property on Andrews behalf.. As Deputy, we were able to ensure that Andrew received all of the ...

In this study, we systematically explored drug combinations to evaluate specific and promiscuous models of drug synergy. We developed a sensitive drug interaction classification assay and used it to find 38 synergistic drug pairs, of which only 1 (Terbinafine-Rapamycin) had been previously reported (Lehar et al, 2007).. To identify cases of specific synergy, predicted by synergistic genetic interaction, we integrated a newly assembled catalog of drug targets with the synergistic genetic interaction network. Although we tested 38 drug pairs corresponding to genetic interactions and found 14 (37%) to be synergistic, it is difficult to assess whether these drug synergies are better explained by genetic interaction or promiscuous synergy. Indeed, after accounting for background rates of synergy for each drug, our results did not show a significant enrichment for drug synergy among drugs targeting the products of genetically interacting genes.. There are many potential explanations for this ...

No, Im not giving you lessons in mind control. Andrew, if youre having trouble, take it up with the trainers. I glanced down the row of lockers to the showers, making sure no one was close enough to hear. Here at the Institute, you never knew who might overhear what you said--or what you thought.. Wed just finished our physical training session for the day--got to keep the body in shape too. Andrew buttoned the last button on his uniform tunic and zipped his gym bag shut. Please, Paul. Youre good. You helped a shitload of guys improve at it. You told me you have.. Thats true, I admitted, but those guys were younger than you and needed the experience. I did it more as a favor. Andrews first worked at the biotechnology company Armos Corporation, which was later purchased by Codon Corporation, which in turn was purchased by Berlex Biosciences, now known as Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals. In 1993, Andrews convinced Berlex to send him to an anti-aging conference at Lake Tahoe, Nevada, where he met Calvin Harley of Geron Corporation.[1] Harley gave a speech on the subject of telomeres and telomerase, their discovery in the organism Tetrahymena by Elizabeth Blackburn and Carol Greider, and on the possible connection between telomeres and aging. Harley mentioned that no one had yet been successful in cloning telomerase in human beings. After the speech, Andrews approached Harley and told him that he could clone human telomerase for Geron in three months. Harley took him up on this offer and hired Andrews as Gerons Director of Molecular Biology. Three months and seventeen days later, Andrews team successfully cloned the RNA component of telomerase (hTR).[1] For this ...

Having grown up racing with his father, Chris, and his entire family, Andrew has been going fast towards a finish line since the age of four. Four years ago, Andrew took his dad to a TORC race at Bark River. It didnt take long for the elder Carlson to make the decision to expand the family business.. A Snocross athlete and Winter X-Games participant, Andrew understood one of the advantages of racing SnoCross, in addition to providing insight on the best competitive lines around a track and providing the taste for competition, is that it has forced Andrew to stay in top physical shape. Manhandling an approximately 460-lb. sled provides the invaluable stamina needed to throw a 2,900-lb. PRO Light through the kind of turns TORC is famous for.. Towards the end of the seventeenth and early eighteenth century, the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called was established. The designation of St. Andrew as the orders patron was thought to have been a random choice. The draft of the order as established by Peter the Great stated that: to hand down to posterity the glorious memory of our first teacher in Christainity and the apostle of the Russian land. St. Andrew was the first to follow Christ, and was claimed by the earliest Christian princes of Kiev as Russias apostle. The motto was For Faith and Fidelity.. The head of the order was the tsar. Peter received the award, for himself, in 1703, for his capture of two Swedish warships at the mouth of the Neva River. Peter was the sixth to receive this order, in 1703. Five men received this award, in 1709, during the battle of Poltava. By Peter the Greats death, the Order of St. Andrew numbered thirty-five members, twenty-four Russians and gourteen foreigners.. The highest of these Russian ...
My husband, Andrew, and I met through mutual friends, Megan and Luke, who pretty much set us up via Facebook (I lived in Chicago at the time, and Andrew lived in Baltimore, where Im originally from). Andrew said he would never do distance relationships, but since Luke had given him my cell number he decided to call me anyways. Six hours into our first phone conversation, he decided that maybe distance relationships werent so bad. After doing the distance thing (that included several 5-6 hour phone conversations and spending a lot of money on plane tickets), Andrew proposed and I was lucky enough to quickly find a job in Baltimore and move back to plan our amazing wedding. ...
