A multi-disciplinary group developed the consensus statements, reviewed the relevant literature, and voted on them anonymously using the Delphi method. The finalized statements were reviewed to determine the level of consensus, evidence quality and strength of recommendation. Infectious colitis must be excluded prior to diagnosing UC. Typical histology and macroscopic extent of the disease seen in the West is found in the Asia-Pacific region. Ulcerative colitis is increasing in many parts of Asia with gender distribution and age of diagnosis similar to the West. Clinical manifestations include intermittent fever, pruritic erythematous maculopapular rash, non-purulent conjunctival hyperemia without itching, arthralgia, myalgia, and headache. Those symptoms disappear spontaneously within 3 to 7 days. The Zika virus (ZIKV) is a single-stranded ribonucleic acid (RNA) virus and has two lineages: one African and one Asian. It belongs to the genus Flavivirus of the family Flaviviridae (1).. ZIKV was first isolated in 1947 from a Rhesus monkey in the Zika forest of Uganda. Human cases were detected in 1952(2, 3). Since then the virus has spread in more than 14 countries, reaching Africa, America, Asia and Oceania. The first outbreak of ZIKV infection reported was in 2007 in the South Pacific Island, Yap Micronesia. Tall pillars of coral is what remains after the phosphate is removed. Photo credit. Then the phosphate ran out, and the trust that had been established to manage the islands wealth diminished in value. The trust also made a series of bad investments including overseas hotels and the Air Nauru airline, which never made profit, essentially undermining the nations economic future. Desperate for a source of income, Nauru started selling passports to foreign nationals for a fee and taking in war refugees which other countries refused. This led to the creation of the Nauru detention center in 2001 by Australia, which continues to provided a significant source of income and employment for the country.. The land and economy werent the only things ravaged. The Nauruans are among the most sick and obese people in the world, racked by diabetes and high blood pressure. In Asia, stroke incidence varies dramatically from country to country. Little is known about stroke incidence in Asians/Pacific Islanders in the US, where regional heterogeneity in Asian/Pacific Islander sub-populations is great. We sought to characterize both the national and regional incidences of first and recurrent hospitalized acute ischemic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and intracerebral hemorrhage in Asians/Pacific Islanders compared to non-Hispanic whites. We used the National Inpatient Sample of the 1997 Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project. It is a 20% stratified sample of hospitalizations to nonfederal hospitals in the US. National and regional projections were made using sampling weights specific for patients and hospitals. We identified stroke subtypes using previously validated ICD-9 codes. Age-adjusted incidence rates were calculated using the direct method with the US population in 2000 as the standard. There were 169,386 stroke hospitalizations in the database. Nationally,

For years, Kim Cobb was the Indiana Jones of climate science. The Georgia Tech professor flew to the caves of Borneo to study ancient and current climate conditions. She jetted to a remote South Pacific island to see the effects of warming on coral.. Add to that flights to Paris, Rome, Vancouver and elsewhere. All told, in the last three years, shes flown 29 times to study, meet or talk about global warming.. Then Cobb thought about how much her personal actions were contributing to the climate crisis, so she created a spreadsheet. She found that those flights added more than 73,000 pounds of heat-trapping carbon to the air.. Now she is about to ground herself, and she is not alone. Some climate scientists and activists are limiting their flying, their consumption of meat and their overall carbon footprints to avoid adding to the global warming they study. Cobb will fly just once next year, to attend a massive international science meeting in Chile.. People want to be part of the solution, ...

Inter-tribal conflict led to many of the senior chiefs of Fiji signing an article of cession to the British Empire in 1874, thus becoming a British protectorate with a governor. (Figure 1). Part of the political process involved the visit of the most senior chief Cakobau to Sydney, Australia along with his sons and entourage at the end of 1874. In January 1875 the warship HMS Dido returned from Sydney carrying the chiefs group and the first instalment of British advisors. Cakobau had become infected with measles in Australia and one of his sons became ill during the 19 day transit from Sydney to Fiji on HMS Dido, which was somewhat longer than the usual 14 day incubation period for measles.3 No quarantine procedure had yet been established such that many Fijians welcomed Cakobaus group home by boarding the ship and then escorting the chiefs party ashore. An unprecedented meeting of all of the high chiefs of Fiji (n=69) and their retinues consisting of hundreds of others was called to occur in ...
