The authors analyze the literature publications and the results of their original investigations concerning the application of the propolis-based pharmacological products for the treatment of acute and chronic diseases of the upper respiratory tract and ears. The desirability of the more extensive application of the propolis-containing medicines in the routine otorhinolaryngological practice is emphasized bearing in mind their numerous biological effects including antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, immunostimulating, anti-oxidative, anesthetic, and cytostatic actions ...
The aim of the study was to find out the quality of life in patients with laryngeal cancer after the treatment and to compare it with the quality of life of the general population of the same average age. Data collection was conducted through a cross-sectional quantitative survey using the standardized World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF), including the population standards for the age groups. Data collection was undertaken in patients treated at the Otorhinolaryngological Department. Data from 42 patients, with an average age of 70 (16 patients with permanent tracheostomy) were evaluated. A t-test was used for the statistical evaluation of the quality of life in patients after the treatment of laryngeal cancer and the general population of the same average age. We found out that patients displayed a higher quality of life in most areas of the WHOQOL-BREF (physical health, psychological health, social relationships, environment, and overall quality of life and ...

The genetic analysis of malformations enables us to distinguish four groups of different anomalies: 1. Chromosomal disorders (gene and chromosome mutations). 2. Single (monogenic) hereditary anomalies and malformations (gene mutations: point-mutations). 3. Malformations with polygenic multifactorial basis (combination of genetic and exogenous factors). 4. Exogenous non-hereditary malformations. We were able to classify malformations in one of the four groups using the three most important methods of human genetic investigations: (a) chromosomal analysis, (b) family investigations, (c) twin method. These methods can complement each other, but each has its own individual place. This review quotes examples of the four different etiological groups in otology, especially those affecting parts of the ear as well as those affecting whole ear.
The ear is a surprisingly complex organ responsible for collecting and processing sounds and transmitting them to the brain for interpretation as well as aiding in balance. Many take hearing and balance for granted, but understanding the process is the key to treating hearing loss. The ear consists of three sections: the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear. Each plays an important role in hearing. Being a part of the auditory system and the vestibular system, the ear is involved in many health conditions. Treatment for any ear related condition will depend on the cause.. Hearing loss is any degree of impairment in the ability to comprehend sound. For hearing to occur, sound waves pass through the external, middle and inner ear, where they are translated into nerve impulses and sent to the brain, which then interprets those signals as sound. Any interruption to this process can cause a partial or total loss of hearing. An ear infection occurs when fluid becomes trapped in the middle ear following ...

We demonstrated that in vivo genetic screens of patients tumors are feasible, at least using shRNA libraries of relatively high complexity (2,410 shRNAs) and metastatic melanomas. Melanomas are among the tumors with the highest frequency of TICs, which is a critical limiting factor of the in vivo screens. Our screening protocol, however, can sustain the high subclonal complexity of melanomas, suggesting that under the appropriate experimental conditions, biological complexity may not limit in vivo genetic screens of primary tumors.. In vivo genetic screens allow the identification of genes indispensable for cancer maintenance in patient-derived tumors under in vivo conditions. This is significantly different from the currently used model systems, mainly cancer cell lines (5-14), and might provide novel insights into mechanisms of tumor maintenance.. Our screens revealed unprecedented numerosity and unexpected degree of functional heterogeneity among individual tumors. We screened 236 genes in ...

CON-HUMO focuses on novel concepts for automatic control, based on data-driven human models and machine learning. This enables innovative control applications that are difficult if not impossible to realize using traditional control and identification methods, in particular in the challenging area of smart human-machine interaction. In order to achieve intuitive and efficient goal-oriented interaction, anticipation is a key. For control selection based on prediction, a dynamic model of the human interaction behavior is required, which, however, is difficult to obtain from first principles. In order to cope with the high complexity of human behavior with unknown inputs and only sparsely available training data, we propose to use machine-learning techniques for statistical modeling of the dynamics. In this new field of human interaction modeling - data-driven and machine-learned - control methods with guaranteed properties do not exist. CON-HUMO addresses this niche. Key methodological innovation ...
strikingly VSVG had a suggestive inverse association that was trapped in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), intermediate compartment (IC) Golgi, or plasma membrane. By inverse PCR and ligation-mediated PCR a preferred pattern could be defined and reported as divergent target mRNAs as system of high complexity (cells, tumors) and still lower complexity (protein-nucleic acid). Specific epigenetic processes of interest include transvection, that results from an interaction between an allele on one chromosome and the corresponding allele on the homologous chromosome dependent upon chromosome pairing. Any envelope construct can be used for pseudotyping - VSV-G tends to give the highest efficiency and broadest host range of transducing non-dividing cells, integrated into the genome of host cells correlate tightly with the limits of known transvection enhancers while the human genome has less 0.03 genes, it may contain 00.01 enhancers at the minimum, were attempts to redirect the tropism of the ecotropic ...
Here I should draw your attention to several notions which you may not be aware of and then draw parallel lines between them. This is highly instructive. To assert that life might have occurred spontaneously on the earth is absurdity. To say it came from space is without any scientific base. Most certainly experiments like those of Miller in 1955 were able to demonstrate that very small amount of chemical components having high complexity like amino acids of cellular protein might be produced artificially. A gaseous mass made of hydrogen, ammonia, methane and water vapor under high-intensity electrical discharges might produce samples of these components. But it is not the life which is obtained from all this. The reasoning of Miller is wrong because there is a wide gap between bringing compounds together in a chemically ordered fashion and producing the fantastic complexity, which we call the cell, or even the rudimentary organs. Every cell, if I dare to say, has its computer. The orders for ...
The Accel-NGS® 2S Hyb DNA Library Kit can be used with FFPE DNA samples to prepare high complexity NGS libraries for hybridization capture. This study highlights the importance of cognition-affect interaction pathways in the construction of mathematical knowledge. Scientific output demands further research on the conceptual structure underlying such interaction aimed at coping with the high complexity of its interpretation. The paper discusses the effectiveness of using a dynamic model such as that outlined in the Mathematical Working Spaces (MWS) framework, in order to describe the interplay between cognition and affect in the transitions from instrumental to discursive geneses in geometrical reasoning. The results based on empirical data from a teaching experiment at a middle school show that the use of dynamic geometry software favours students attitudinal and volitional dimensions and helps them to maintain productive affective pathways, affording greater intellectual independence in mathematical work and interaction with the context that impact learning opportunities in geometric proofs. The reflective and heuristic dimensions ...

The Otorhinolaryngologist (ENT) frequently has to deal with OSA or suspicious OSA patients and undergone polysomnography (PSG) or portable monitoring (PM) and should be confident about the quality and consistency of the polysomnographic diagnosis. The main polysomnographic traces compressed in a unique epoch, defined as compact PSG/PM (CP), could represent an efficient tool to confirm the quality of PSG/PM Sleep Breathing Disorders diagnosis. This is a validations study of a CP interpretations method, analyzing the learning curve, the level of diagnostic accuracy, and the inter-operator agreement in interpreting the CP pattern between a group of ENT specialists not skilled in PSG/PM scoring, but managing SBD patients during daily practice. Seven ENT specialists have been enrolled in the study. 50 CP traces (ranging from normal to all main SBD patterns) have been showed to each participant for the interpretation and scoring process, before and after a 2-h theoretical-practical interactive ...

I recall the design, development and implementation of the Association for Research in Otolaryngology. What sticks out in my mind are the personalities of highly motivated leaders and the fears and tribulations in starting a new venture. Through the years, the organization has been challenged, and indeed has made changes to accommodate the research trends and the wishes of the membership.. Initially, the goal of ARO was to establish an unfettered forum for individuals interested in research related to Otolaryngology. Early, there was a mix of researchers representing various clinical and basic science disciplines. Subsequently, the participants changed and the emphasis became clearly related to the ear. Many more Basic Scientists and Clinicians were added to the membership and today the organization can be proud to represent those interests that are on the forefront of investigations dealing with ear function and pathology.. As also originally designed, the Association of Research was to promote ...
This innovative text includes clinical information on cases provided by faculty from top medical schools along with their narratives on what they learned. Contributors also include experts in medical malpractice and malpractice liability insurance. Practicing otolaryngologists, otolaryngology residents, malpractice attorneys, law students, otolaryngology nurse practitioners and primary care physicians will benefit from the examples in these "scary cases.". From the Foreword. I have taught law at Boston University School of Medicine for 4 decades (I also teach health law at the Law School). There is much to know about the law, but for physicians generally, and surgeons in particular, there are two fundamental legal principles that can make their professional lives less stressful, and that can be easily summarized: Act consistent with the medical standard of care (what a reasonably prudent physician would do in the same or similar circumstances), with your patients informed consent (including ...

When Dr. Leigh Sowerby, Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, set out on a medical mission to Guyana in 2012, he never could have imagined a chance encounter would lead him on a path to improve and expand the practice of Otolaryngology within the impoverished country.. Originally slated to provide outreach care to Guyanese patients in peripheral villages, it was Dr. Sowerbys encounter with Guyanas only academic otolaryngologist that piqued his interest.. "The need for expansion and improved care in Otolaryngology was apparent," said Dr. Sowerby.. As one of the poorest countries in the Western hemisphere, the scope and availability of comprehensive healthcare services and providers in Guyana is understandably limited. With close to 800,000 people in Guyana, there are only two practicing otolaryngologists providing care in the public healthcare system.. "Both otolaryngologists are expatriates from India and Cuba working on contract, and as such, there ...

Last week, we posted a blog entry about gastroesophageal reflux disease, often referred to as GERD. As a refresher, GERD occurs when acid from the stomach backs up into the esophagus. GERD is commonly characterized by the burning sensation known as heartburn. Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is another reflux disease, albeit one that is not normally associated with heartburn.. So how is LPR different from GERD? During GERD, the contents of the stomach and upper digestive tract reflux all the way up the esophagus. LPR occurs when those contents reach beyond the upper esophageal sphincter (the ring of muscle at the top of the esophagus) and go into the back of the throat, sometimes even reaching the back of the nasal airway.. Typically, people who experience LPR complain that the back of their throat has a bitter taste, a sensation of burning, or something stuck. Other patients have hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, throat clearing and difficulty with the sensation of drainage from the back of the ...
