Objective To explore the clinical efficacy and application of trabecular cartilage-perichondrocytes in tympanoplasty. Methods Retrospective analysis of 76 patients(79 cases) with trabeculectomy, To observe the postoperative tympanic membrane and compare the preoperative and postoperative hearing. Results 79 cases of surgical ears, postoperative review more than 3 months, 1 case of cartilage cartilage-cartilage necrosis, see the large perforation; 2 cases of tympanic membrane edge of the tip of the size of the perforation did not heal; 3 cases of tympanic membrane attached to the anterior wall of the external auditory canal; The rest of the ear capsules are healing. Postoperative hearing was significantly improved compared with preoperative. Conclusion The tragus cartilage-cartilage membrane for the tympanoplasty achieved good results and can be used in clinical surgery.
The modernization of manufacturing facilities by means of automation represents an approach for increasing productivity in industry. The three existing types of automation are related to continuous process controls, the use of transfer conveyor methods, and the employment of programmable automation for the low-volume batch production of discrete parts. The industrial robots, which are defined as computer controlled mechanics manipulators, belong to the area of programmable automation. Typically, the robots perform tasks of arc welding, paint spraying, or foundary operation. One may assign a robot to perform a variety of job assignments simply by changing the appropriate computer program. The present investigation is concerned with an evaluation of the potential of the robot on the basis of its basic structure and controls. It is found that robots function well in limited areas of industry. If the range of tasks which robots can perform is to be expanded, it is necessary to provide multiple-task sensors,
This paper describes an electrical control method of absorbing arm vibrations of industrial robots. Arm vibration problems are divided into two categories: reso

How does ear surgery work?. The outer portion of the ear, which is called the pinna or auricle, is made up almost exclusively of skin stretched tightly over a flexible cartilage framework. This cartilage will naturally warp or bend when scored with a sharp implement, making it possible to sculpt and re-shape the curves and arches of the outer ear. In cases where the ear is insufficiently developed, additional cartilage can be taken from the patients own body so as to avoid the risk of allergic reaction, surgical rejection, or post-operative infection that artificial materials may create.. Can ear surgery be performed on adults?. Absolutely! This is a very common question, as ear surgery is typically associated with pediatric malformations of the ear, and specifically with a technique used to decrease the projection of an overly prominent ear by recreating missing folds in the cartilage, a procedure commonly known as ear pinning.1 While this specific procedure is usually best performed on ...

Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a condition characterized by the accumulation of non-purulent fluid in the middle ear space, in the absence of acute inflammation. OME is diagnosed 2.2 million times annually (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2000). It is a condition in which more then 50% of children will experience in their first year of life (National Institutes of Health, 1993). Although many episodes resolve spontaneously, 30% to 40% persist, and 5% to 10% of episodes last 1 year or longer (Yoshinaga-Itano, 1995). It is particularly more common among children between the ages of one and three years and in seasons where the prevalence of upper respiratory tract infections is high; with an incidence of 10% to 30%. It occurs frequently even up to the age of seven, with a prevalence of 3% to 8%(Fiellau et al, 1997; Fiellau et al, 1983; Lous et al, 1981; Teele et al, 1989).. OME is the most common cause of acquired hearing loss in childhood. Long-term hearing complications from OME ...
On Tuesday, I went to watch another one of my pupils, Sara Kocinski, have a lesson with grand prix rider and trainer, Tessa Thorne. Sara has been training with me for nearly four years and has a stunning Welsh section D called Shadow. They reached the Petplan finals at novice a few years back and have been busy training at home and progressing up through the levels ever since. Shadow has started his tempi changes and pirouettes and is testament to my belief that any horse can do dressage. Last year, Sara attended a camp which was organised by British Dressage and was lucky enough to have some lessons with Tessa, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Luckily Tessa focussed on the same things that I teach Sara (its always helpful when two different trainers sing from the same hymn sheet!) and worked on having Shadow round enough and soft, swinging and supple over his back. As Sara has been selected to ride on a team for an inter-regional competition, next weekend, I encouraged her to get some extra help ...
A bitter primary race ended with a surprising twist when Del. Charles A. Jenkins (R-Dist. 3B) announced he would not support Michael Hough in the general election.. Michael Hough does not have the ethics or morals I want in my candidate, Jenkins said. I encourage folks who share my concerns to support Democrat Paul Gilligan.. Hough defeated Jenkins by a 2-1 margin. Jenkins blames his loss, in part, on consistent assaults by Hough, who pounded away at his record as a county commissioner and delegate, often erroneously, Jenkins said.. Hough, who said earlier that Republicans would come together no matter what the outcome, said he was disappointed by Jenkins position. I was fully prepared to endorse him if he won. If theres someone you agree with 80 percent of the time, hes your friend, not your enemy. ... Its too bad, Hough said.. Hough led with 2,842 votes to Jenkins 1,331. Jenkins said he could not compete with Houghs cash and endorsements, but he appreciated those who championed his ...

Your surgeon will probably order some lab tests to make sure you are in good health before surgery. You will need to stop smoking at least six weeks beforehand, and will stop eating and drinking at an instructed time the night before the surgery. The surgeon might have you stop taking any blood-thinning medications or herbal supplements about two weeks before your scheduled ear surgery.. Patients will need to take off a week from work or school (or have the surgery in the summer, for school age patients).. Wear a loose, comfortable, button down shirt on the day of your surgery. If you are having an outpatient procedure, you wont want to pull a shirt on over your head before you go home. This is especially important for younger patients, who might be a bit more clumsy and could possibly hurt themselves.. You will also need a ride to take you home. Children are sometimes required to stay overnight after surgery, so you will need to plan for that if that is the case in your situation. ...
One million industrial robots currently in operation have been directly responsible for the creation of close to three million jobs, the study concluded. A growth in robot use over the next five years will result in the creation of one million high quality jobs around the world. Robots will help to create jobs in some of the most critical industries of this century: consumer electronics, food, solar & wind power, and advanced battery manufacturing to name just a few. …. Marlin Steel, Baltimore, MD, USA, is an excellent illustration of the points made in the Report regarding the advantages of using robots within an unsafe working environment. Since Marlin began introducing automation a dozen years ago, not only has the company benefited, but so have the employees.. Drew Greenblatt, Marlin Steel´s CEO of Marlin Steel bought the company in 1998. At that time, its employees were paid $6/hour with no benefits and they typically produced 300 hand bends in an hour. It was a boring job and an unsafe ...

A practical distributed planning and control system for industrial robots is presented. The hierarchical concept consists of three independent levels. Each level is modularly implemented and supplies an application interface (API) to the next higher level. At the top level, we propose an automatic motion planner. The motion planner is based on a best-first search algorithm and needs no essential off-line computations. At the middle level, we propose a PC-based robot control architecture, which can easily be adapted to any industrial kinematics and application. Based on a client/server-principle, the control unit estab-lishes an open user interface for including application specific programs. At the bottom level, we propose a flexible and modular concept for the integration of the distributed motion control units based on the CAN bus. The concept allows an on-line adaptation of the control parameters according to the robots configuration. This implies high accuracy for the path execution and ...

Using a library of almost 1,000 skull bones collected for more than 30 years at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, researchers have identified a consistent congenital basis for a rare but troubling disorder they discovered in which loud noises cause dizziness. Their findings were presented at the Association for Research in Otolaryngologys February meeting in St. Petersburg Beach, Fla. Called superior canal dehiscence syndrome, the disorder is caused by a hole, or dehiscence, in part of the skulls temporal bone that overlies an inner ear balance canal. Lloyd Minor, of the Johns Hopkins Center for Hearing and Balance, first discovered the disorder in 1995 and described it--along with a treatment--in 1998.. Patients show specific symptoms, including vertigo--the sense that the room is moving--in response to loud music, the noisy environment of a sports event or the dial tone of a telephone, he says. The bone collection used in his study, thought to be the most extensive of its kind in the ...
Microsuction is the elimination of ear wax from the ear canal using lighting microscopes as well as mild medical suction. At our centers we utilize ENT-grade suction devices as well as mobile convergent microscopic lens, as well as non reusable, clean and sterile suction tips. Microsuction is considered the most safe approach of ear wax elimination, and our training and also experience ensure you will certainly have a very safe procedure. When the ear wax is extremely tough, or if there is a foreign body in the ear canal, such as a cotton bud suggestion, or an ear plug which has ended up being stuck, we may make use of instruments, which are specifically made for eliminating ear wax as well as various other items from the ear canal. Every one of our staff are trained as well as experienced at making use of instruments. You may also see instrument elimination also called curettage or aural bathroom, yet we assume tool elimination seems nicer. ...

Ear Surgery: Overview. Large ear size or protuberant ears can be a source of insecurity for children and adults alike. Many times, children are teased which can have devastating effects on their self-esteem and self-confidence. Protruding or large ears can be due to developmental deformities in the fold of the ear (Pinna) or excess cartilage in the cup shaped bowl near the ear canal. This procedure can be performed at any age once the ears are fully developed, usually age five or six. Ear surgery is a quick and relatively painless procedure that can give a lifetime of confidence and self-esteem.. Ear Surgery: Procedure. Treatment involves reforming the natural curves to the cartilage through the placement of fine sutures behind the ear. Sometimes cartilage of the concha (bowl shaped cartilage) is reduced when needed or desired.. Earlobe Surgery:. ...
0044]Three crankshafts are provided as the crankshafts 7 by being radially distanced from the center of the internal gear 4. Hollow holes 29 and 31 are formed in respective central portions (radially central portions) of the pair of end plate portions 6X and 6Y and the external gears 5. A protective tube 40 formed of a steel material is loosely fitted in the hollow holes 31 of the external gears 5 and is mounted in the hollow hole 29 of the carrier 6 with O-rings sandwiched therebetween. The single cylindrical gear 20 is located on the radially inner side of an imaginary line passing through the center of rotation of each crankshaft 7, and that cylindrical gear meshes with the transmission gears 15 of the respective crankshafts, an inner periphery thereof being rotatably supported by the protective tube 40 by means of a cylindrical roller bearing 21. Accordingly, the cylindrical gear 20 is supported rotatably by the carrier 6 through the cylindrical roller bearing 21 and the protective tube 40. ...

One group of Sprague-Dawley rats (group A, n = 6) was treated by instilling Pseudomonas aeruginosa exotoxin A (PaExoA), and another (group B, n = 6) treated similarly with Haemophilus influenzae type b endotoxin (HiBEndo). In group A a 20 dB hearing loss was observed, predominantly in the high-frequency region, which was reversible within 1 month. In group B no significant hearing impairment was noted. Between 1 and 6 months later, the lateral and posterior semicircular canals (SCCs) were ablated unilaterally. Control rats (group C, n = 8) were subjected to ablation only. All rats were cochleotomized contralaterally prior to labyrinthine surgery. Frequency-specific evoked potential testing at 2-31.5 kHz tone bursts was performed before and directly after surgery, 6, 24 and 48 hours and 1, 4 and 16 weeks postoperatively. After surgery in 18 rats, thresholds rose immediately, predominantly at 2, 4 and 6 kHz, followed by varying degrees of recovery. Greatest immediate postoperative hearing loss was ...
Otologic surgery often involves a mastoidectomy, which is the removal of a portion of the mastoid region of the temporal bone, to safely access the middle and inner ear. The surgery is challenging because many critical structures are embedded within the bone, making them difficult to see and requiring a high level of accuracy with the surgical dissection instrument, a high-speed drill. We propose to automate the mastoidectomy portion of the surgery using a compact, bone-attached robot. The system described in this paper is a milling robot with four degrees-of-freedom (DOF) that is fixed to the patient during surgery using a rigid positioning frame screwed into the surface of the bone. The target volume to be removed is manually identified by the surgeon pre-operatively in a computed tomography (CT) scan and converted to a milling path for the robot. The surgeon attaches the robot to the patient in the operating room and monitors the procedure. Several design considerations are discussed in the ...

Endoscopic ear surgery (EES) continues to emerge as an accepted modality for management of an otologic disease. Advances in endoscopic optics, instrumentation, ergonomics, and surgical technique have enabled surgeons significant advantages in visualization, access, and removal of disease with a substantial reduction in removal or disruption of healthy tissue. In many cases, the traditional postauricular approach can be avoided, with surgery being performed entirely through the ear canal.. Interest in EES is strong and rapidly growing. Our course offers a broad overview of the state of endoscopic ear surgery. Didactic sessions will cover the history of EES, extensive discussion of surgical techniques with multimedia content including live surgery, and strategies for incorporating EES into practice for beginners through advanced practitioners. Hands-on sessions in our state of the art temporal bone laboratory with high definition endoscopic video systems at each station will be led by our course ...
A mastoidectomy is a surgical procedure that removes diseased mastoid air cells. These cells sit behind your ear in a hollow space in your skull. The diseased cells are often the result of an ear infection that has spread into your skull.. The infection sometimes spreads to the temporal bone. Your doctor may need to remove parts of the infected bone if this occurs. This results in hearing loss.. There are several types of mastoidectomy, including:. ...

The surgery was not supposed to last that long, so we hurried to the gift shop to get a healthy breakfast of candy bars, chips, and soda. We went back to the hospital room to wait and eat. Marsha got the call when Maria was waking up and we were told that she was very good. The doctor cleaned a little ear wax out of each ear, but behind the ear drums he saw discoloration different that he normally sees. He pricked a hole to see if it was fluid. He finally had to make the hole a little bigger because instead of being the normal fluid consistency, the stuff was more like a glue consistency. While he was in there he put tubes in her ear just in case. He didnt see any infection, but figured why bring her back at a different time if she needs them when he was already there ...
Abstract Background: Pain and postoperative nausea and vomiting are the most common postoperative complications in middle ear surgeries. Amongst the beta-blockers, esmolol is ultrashort acting cardio selective β1 receptor antagonist used for management of postoperative pain. It also contributes to the significant decrease in PONV and reduces patient distress and facilitates earlier discharge. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of perioperative esmolol infusion on postoperative pain relief and postoperative nausea vomiting after middle ear surgeries. Methods: After obtaining approval from Institution Ethics Committee, 70 patients of age 15 and 65 years of ASA I,II and III were allocated with randomization into two groups of 35 each. Group C: 30 ml normal saline loading dose and thereafter continuous infusion of 1ml/min and Group E:0.5mg/kg esmolol in 30ml NS loading dose and 30ug/kg/min as infusion. Results: Average duration of analgesia was about 535 min in group E as compared to 187 min ...

Everybody in the league knew that Webber was done, a shell of his former self, a player who simply had nothing left to give. Everyone but Nelson, that is. Apparently trying to make amends for the past - the Nelson-Webber feud that tore the team apart in 1994 - Nelson decided Webber was just the ticket to amplify the Warriors offense.. The experiment lasted two months - right up to Webber announcing his retirement in late March of 2008 - and it bombed, horribly, from start to finish. Virtually every night, Webber was a detriment on the floor. His presence definitely cost the Warriors some games, in my mind. Considering that they missed the playoffs by one game, Nelsons folly cost his team a spot in the postseason. Pure and simple. The Giants - and this is so typical in sports - have decided that they, in their infinite wisdom, can turn a lost cause into magic. Use of robots in surgery, especially in neurosurgery, has been a fascinating idea since the development of industrial robots. Using the advantages of a robot to comple- ment human limitations could potentially enhance surgical possibilities, other than making it easier and safer. Over the last few decades, much progress has been made in this direction across various disciplines of neurosurgery such as cranial surgery, spinal surgery and radiation therapy. This chapter details the necessity, principles and the future directions of robotics in neurosurgery. Also, the concept of curvilinear robotic surgery and associated instrumentation is discussed. The idea of using robots in surgery has fascinated surgeons since the making of the first robots for industrial and military use. The first robots were developed in the late fifties for use in industry mainly as transfer machines, used for transporting objects across a few feet. Further design modifications with articulated multi axial arms helped ...

Mobile robots are teleoperated, can attempt tasks immediately, but are imprecise, ungainly, and keep a human operator effectively tethered to the system at all times. As mobile robots become more complex with more degrees-of-freedom and greater mission space, the burden on the operator becomes even more taxing. Visual Targeting is a technology that bridges this gap. It provides a means where the operator defines objects of interest in the environment via camera systems while motion planners automatically generate the robot trajectories to achieve the goal.
The present invention relates to a robot mounted on a self-propelled trolley, the frame of which has great torsional flexibility, which flexibility allows said trolley to adapt to unevenness of the ground and the drive wheels of said trolley are fixed to supports articulated by means of articulations to said frame and are subjected to the action of elastic elements which press said wheels against the ground so as to provide the necessary grip. The result of the present invention is a fully automatic unit which moves along programmed routes, stopping to perform planned operations. Application to industrial robots
No doubt there are more. It makes me think of Robocops gun hip too although slightly off topic.. I like them, robot arms. I see them as a celebration of industrial process. I predict they will become a more widespread part of our lives. They are cheaper now (it appears that non-load bearing ones dont require three phase power either) and since they are multi modal they can perform many tasks, in strange contexts. No doubt FDM or other fittings are/will be available, implications of that could be very large. Imagine a robot arm in your drive thr(o)u(gh), changing a tyre, and then printing out your happy meal. Our lives could become peppered with arrays of multi-buildy-arms.. Robotlab (via Roger Ibars) are a German partnership who have used industrial robot arms to perform a DJ set. Witnessing the arms is as important as their role. I find them disconcertingly accurate, mechanised confidence in something typically so analogue and expert and careful. There is also something about their ...

In November 2017, we showed you [Chris Annin]s open-source 6-DOF robot arm. Since then hes been improving the arm and making it more accessible for anyone who doesnt get to play with industrial robots all day at work. The biggest improvement is that AR2 had a closed-loop control system, and AR3 is open-loop. If something bumps the arm or it crashes, the bot will recover its previous position automatically. It also auto-calibrates itself using limit switches.. AR3 is designed to be milled from aluminium or entirely 3D printed. The motors and encoders are controlled with a Teensy 3.5, while an Arduino Mega handles I/O, the grippers, and the servos. In the demo video after the break, [Chris] shows off AR3s impressive control after a brief robotic ballet in which two AR3s move in hypnotizing unison.. [Chris] set up a site with the code, his control software, and all the STL files. He also has tutorial videos for programming and calibrating, and wrote an extremely detailed assembly manual. ...

Unfortunately, this is precisely what we cannot afford to do in the presence of assignment, which forces us to be concerned with time and change. 188 Eratosthenes, a third-century B.C. Alexandrian Greek philosopher, is famous for giving the first accurate estimate of the circumference of the Earth, which he computed by observing shadows cast at noon on the day of the summer solstice. T cell activation Immunodominance is one of the many critical, yet poorly understood, phenomena associated with antiviral immunity. Why is it that one particular viral peptide may be recognized by as many as 1% of all the cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) in the body, while a different epitope may be recognized only by 0
Kukecs People features Nancy Chovancek, whose life turned around after her parents died and she felt life was too short not to do something she always wanted to do. She left behind a 10-year career in project management, returned to school, graduated magna cum laude from DeVry University with a degree in web graphic design in 2009, and launched her own company, Wheaton-based Pegleg Web Designs. She also overcame hearing loss by having surgery in both ears at the same time.

Actually, we paid others to do most of these things, but weve done some things ourselves. We replaced the ugly boards and boxes that framed the windows with trim. We did a pretty good job of it. The new trim is gingerly nailed into lathe and plaster, so it looks good but dont swing on the trim unless you want to pull the whole wall down. We also painted the inside of the house. (You should see what a fine job I did on the texturing. The plaster swoops look a lot like frosting on a cake.) Previously, the kitchen was brown, then smoot-covered after I set a plastic tray on the pilot light. Now the kitchens a lively pink, blue, yellow and grey: no threat of falling asleep while you cook (I say you because I do nothing around open flames since Ive lost depth perception.) One of our first home projects was to dig a french drain in the front yard. Ann brought home a bunch of pcp pipe one afternoon and started digging. A french drain seemed to her an afternoons work. We dug that french drain all ...
Building a retaining wall in the conventional ways is not a trivial matter. So DIYers have come up with an interesting trick: Rather than messing around with mortar, they lay the walls down like Lego pieces, using concrete while its still in the bag. Thats right, the idea is that
I am a confirmed vendor at both The Zebra Effect show at the Edmontn Garrison on oct 2 (come out and support a great cause! All the vendors will be donating at least 10% of their profits) and the huuuuge Wee Stock in November! It is sponsored by The Edmonton Journal and will be held at the Mayfield Centre. I have a LOT of sewing to do, as I am considering selling at the St Albert farmers market as well! I am a little nervous about my first show, as I have absolutely no idea what to expect and the worst case scenario angel on my shoulder is coming up with a million catastrophic scenarios that may or may not occur (what if you forget to bring any change? what if your table looks crappy compapred to all the seasoned professionals lavish displays? what if nobody likes your stuff? what if someone trips on your stand, knocks it and the neighboring dividing wall down, creating an apocolyptic domino effect till the last wall in the auditorium comes down with a crash and everyone is just ...
My scientific and intellectual mind, now did not help me at all. I went around in the room, I was trying to get back into my body, but this flesh of mine did not receive me, and the scare was terrible! I ended up fleeing as fast as I could, I passed through, I do not know how, the wall of the operating room, hoping to be able to hide myself in the aisles of the hospital, but when I passed the wall… Down! I made a jump into emptiness…! I headed toward several tunnels which went down toward the bottom. At the beginning there was still a little light, like beehives in which there were so many people: young ones, old ones, men, women, who were crying, and with frightening screams they were grinding their teeth… And I, ever more terrified, continued to descend, seeking to get out of there, while the light was going away diminishing… I carried on roaming in those tunnels in a frightening darkness, until I arrived to an obscurity that cannot be compared to anything else… I can only say that, ...
