Background. Osteopathic philosophy and practice are congruent with the biopsychosocial model, a patient-centered approach when treating disease, and the view of the person as a unity (i.e., body, mind, and soul). Nevertheless, a unity of being should involve a systematic person-centered understanding of the patients personality as a biopsychosociospiritual construct that influences health (i.e., well-being and ill-being). We suggest Cloningers personality model, comprising temperament (i.e., body) and character (i.e., mind and soul), as a genuine paradigm for implementation in osteopathic practice. As a first step, we investigated (1) the relationships between personality and health among osteopathic patients, (2) differences in personality between patients and a control group, and (3) differences in health within patients depending on the presenting problem and gender.Method. 524 osteopathic patients in Sweden (age mean = 46.17, SD = 12.54, 388 females and 136 males) responded to an online survey

Osteopaths are an integral member of the health care team, playing a pivotal role in the provision of care for patients with musculoskeletal disorders. Osteopaths, like other health care providers, are under increasing pressure to deliver evidence-based health care and to improve patient outcomes. However, the extent to which osteopaths engage in evidence-based practice (EBP), particularly in Australia, is not well understood. This study therefore set out to investigate the attitudes, skills and use of EBP, and perceived barriers and enablers of EBP uptake, among osteopaths practicing in Australia. National cross-sectional survey of Australian registered osteopaths. Eligible participants were invited by email and other digital media recruitment strategies to complete the online Evidence-Based Practice Attitude and Utilisation Survey (EBASE). A total of 332 osteopaths completed the survey. The demographic characteristics of respondents were generally consistent with the characteristics of the Australian

The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) stated on April 30 that treatment decisions on the use of FDA-approved medications for addiction to opioids such as pain medicine and heroin should be made only by skilled physicians. Limits by governments and insurers on addiction medications can lead to patient relapse, crime, overdose and death, ASAM said in a major policy statement.. The action by the medical society of addiction specialist physicians is in response to the growing trend of state governments to place arbitrary limits contrary to medical necessity on FDA- approved addiction medications that treat opioid use disorders, including buprenorphine, buprenorphine/naloxone, extended-release injectable naltrexone and methadone. These actions by governments and some commercial payers reinforce stigmatization of the disease of addiction and prejudice against the use of addiction medications, which ASAM stated must be made available as needed by physicians treating opioid use disorder ...

Lindsey Courage brought us back to more familiar territory with a discussion of runners gait, the connection with possible injury pattern and the likelihood of change under guidance. This is solid osteopathic territory, good quality bio-mechanical assessment and knowledge based advice. Lyndsey presented her findings well and here as was the case with Ben before her I suspected that her previous knowledge gained through an MA in Neurophysiology served her well in the approach to this topic.. Overall it was great to see 5th year students being able to set up such thought provoking and well- presented ideas. That it was all underpinned by a talk from such a leading light as Carol made the process seem one of progression from under to post graduate along that lauded and highly desirable pathway of life long learning.. Osteopaths are primary healthcare practitioners like GPs and are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council who hold us to the same standards as the General Medical Council do for doctors. You can discuss matters with the same level of trust as you would your GP and know that the information will remain confidential and we will be acting in your best interests at all times. This does mean that we might ask some questions about your general health but as with every other aspect of the consultation please ask if you want to know why. The consultation is a two way discussion so we can work out how to best help you and you can understand what is happening with your body.. The Osteopaths Act 1993 Establishes the General Osteopathic Council to "provide for the regulation of the profession of osteopathy.". In 1993 osteopathy became the first major complementary health care profession to be accorded statutory regulation. From 1998 all osteopaths must be registered with the General Osteopathic ...
Back pain is a very common problem, with reports suggesting as many as eight out of ten of us will suffer from it at some point during our lives. Around 5.6 million working days in the UK are lost each year due to back pain, second only to stress .. Back pain can affect anyone at any age, and can often be the result of a sprain or a strain of the structures of the back such as the muscles, ligaments, joints or damage to the discs. Osteoarthritis or wear and tear in the back can also be a reason.. Most of us know that back pain can be painful and inconvenient, but its not usually serious and will often resolve on its own within a few weeks. However, many people seek osteopathic treatment to address it quickly and at a time and place of their own choice; and osteopaths are skilled at helping prevent back pain from becoming a chronic, long-term condition.. ...

You might not be in pain but perhaps a little less flexible than you were last summer, maybe youre getting more active already and experiencing some aches that you feel really shouldnt be there. We can help.. As Osteopaths we look at how your body functions from head to toe and how a restriction in one part of your body impacts another part. We want to get to the bottom of what is going on and work to improve the way your whole body functions. Like a full service for your body, correcting a problem before it goes wrong or causes pain.. Our bodies are amazing at compensating. Us humans wouldnt be where we are today if we couldnt compensate for all kinds of problems. An example of this could be a stiff neck from sleeping awkwardly. Youre still able to do your daily tasks, but maybe looking over your shoulder is harder. But the body has limits on how much it can compensate, a niggle here, stiff there, all adds and can eventually cause pain. Think of an empty glass, and each time you experience ...
