Background. Osteopathic philosophy and practice are congruent with the biopsychosocial model, a patient-centered approach when treating disease, and the view of the person as a unity (i.e., body, mind, and soul). Nevertheless, a unity of being should involve a systematic person-centered understanding of the patients personality as a biopsychosociospiritual construct that influences health (i.e., well-being and ill-being). We suggest Cloningers personality model, comprising temperament (i.e., body) and character (i.e., mind and soul), as a genuine paradigm for implementation in osteopathic practice. As a first step, we investigated (1) the relationships between personality and health among osteopathic patients, (2) differences in personality between patients and a control group, and (3) differences in health within patients depending on the presenting problem and gender.Method. 524 osteopathic patients in Sweden (age mean = 46.17, SD = 12.54, 388 females and 136 males) responded to an online survey

Osteopaths are an integral member of the health care team, playing a pivotal role in the provision of care for patients with musculoskeletal disorders. Osteopaths, like other health care providers, are under increasing pressure to deliver evidence-based health care and to improve patient outcomes. However, the extent to which osteopaths engage in evidence-based practice (EBP), particularly in Australia, is not well understood. This study therefore set out to investigate the attitudes, skills and use of EBP, and perceived barriers and enablers of EBP uptake, among osteopaths practicing in Australia. National cross-sectional survey of Australian registered osteopaths. Eligible participants were invited by email and other digital media recruitment strategies to complete the online Evidence-Based Practice Attitude and Utilisation Survey (EBASE). A total of 332 osteopaths completed the survey. The demographic characteristics of respondents were generally consistent with the characteristics of the Australian

There is an enormous difference between Orthodontic treatment versus Functional Orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic treatment is primarily concerned with straightening the teeth, assuming that the facial muscles and jaw joints will accommodate to their new position. Whereas, Functional Orthodontic treatment in conjunction with Osteopathy is reshaping and repositioning the upper and lower jaw bone to a more harmonious position which results in straightening of the teeth. Osteopathy and Functional Dentistry means treating the jaw posture, tooth relationship, muscle relationship and head and neck posture as a whole system ...

The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) stated on April 30 that treatment decisions on the use of FDA-approved medications for addiction to opioids such as pain medicine and heroin should be made only by skilled physicians. Limits by governments and insurers on addiction medications can lead to patient relapse, crime, overdose and death, ASAM said in a major policy statement.. The action by the medical society of addiction specialist physicians is in response to the growing trend of state governments to place arbitrary limits contrary to medical necessity on FDA- approved addiction medications that treat opioid use disorders, including buprenorphine, buprenorphine/naloxone, extended-release injectable naltrexone and methadone. These actions by governments and some commercial payers reinforce stigmatization of the disease of addiction and prejudice against the use of addiction medications, which ASAM stated must be made available as needed by physicians treating opioid use disorder ...

Lindsey Courage brought us back to more familiar territory with a discussion of runners gait, the connection with possible injury pattern and the likelihood of change under guidance. This is solid osteopathic territory, good quality bio-mechanical assessment and knowledge based advice. Lyndsey presented her findings well and here as was the case with Ben before her I suspected that her previous knowledge gained through an MA in Neurophysiology served her well in the approach to this topic.. Overall it was great to see 5th year students being able to set up such thought provoking and well- presented ideas. That it was all underpinned by a talk from such a leading light as Carol made the process seem one of progression from under to post graduate along that lauded and highly desirable pathway of life long learning.. The right choice is to see an experienced osteopath, such as those that work at Odyssée. Babies can be treated by osteopaths specialising in perinatal care, starting in their first weeks of life. When childbirth was very long, very fast or complicated, when breastfeeding is difficult, or they have other problems, osteopaths working at this centre suggest bringing in your baby quickly (some have been treated a few hours after childbirth!). During the first appointment, the baby is treated softly and respectfully, and parents will receive extensive advice on how to adapt to their new life and understand their baby. On the other hand, if everything seems fine, the appointment will be preventative, and the osteopaths at Odyssée will suggest seeing the baby during their first four or five weeks after childbirth.. Osteopaths can help solve many problems experienced by babies during their first weeks of life, such as reflux, bloating, vomiting, crying, stiffness, torticollis, plagiocephaly (flat ...

Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) on the thoracic cage and diaphragm is commonly used in clinical practice to address myofascial imbalances, including muscle spasms to improve thoracic cage excursion. Prior research has demonstrated that manual approaches applied to the thoracic cage have positive results with lung function and reducing inflammation.. Parkinsons disease (PD) is a common disabling and progressive neuro-degenerative disorder. Morbidity and mortality are frequently associated with pulmonary dysfunction in patients with PD. Pulmonary function tests (PFT) have been utilized to document respiratory impairment in PD patients. Researchers estimate that 89% of people with PD have speech and voice disorders including disorders of laryngeal, respiratory and articulatory function.. These authors hypothesize that performing OMM on the thoracic cage of PD subjects will show improvement in PFT, chest expansion, and speech production. Subjects with PD meeting the criteria for the study ...
The research has demonstrated separately that phototherapy and osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) are effective in reducing chronic low back pain, However there has not been any research to evaluate whether the interaction of the two treatment approaches together can provide enhanced pain relief. In A Meta-analysis of the Efficacy of Phototherapy in Tissue Repair, Fulop et.al.(1) from the Department of Physical Therapy, School of Health Professions, New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) concluded that phototherapy is a highly effective form of treatment for tissue repair, with stronger supporting evidence resulting from experimental animal studies than human studies (Fulop, p. 695, 699). Further review of the literature by Fulop et. al. (2) focused on the question of pain relief in relation to phototherapy, and the conclusion was that pain from various etiologies can be effectively relieved by phototherapy. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has cleared biostimulation lasers (a.k.a. ...

I work in an integrated practice with Osteopathic Physicians who are board certified in family practice and sports medicine. The unique model we use is one that has actually been around for a long time - the marriage of osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) with physical therapy practice. The osteopaths will perform OMM and other procedural interventions on patients with musculoskeletal dysfunction and refer them to me for exercise instruction, manual therapy and modality applications. I use a strong evidence based approach to my treatment applications consisiting mainly of manual therapy and exercise applications. The patients will see me 1 to 3 times per week (average about 1 to 2, rarely 3 unless they are post operative) and the osteopaths q 3 to 4 weeks. The outcomes are amazing. We are planning an RCT for this model for non specific LBP comparing it to non-osteopathic primary care (NSAIDs), PT only groups and will look at outcomes (functional and pain) and cost. No standardized treatments ...
