Preparations of autologous plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF) are used to promote healing and tissue regeneration. We seek to determine whether covering the titanium implant surface with this preparation could enhance osseointegration. The interaction of PRGF with the surface of titanium implants was examined by environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). A total of 23 implants were placed in the tibiae and radii of 3 goats; 13 implants were inserted after covering the surface and filling the alveolus with PRGF, and 10 more implants were inserted following a conventional protocol and served as controls. Histomorphometric analysis of the bone-implant interface was performed after 8 weeks. Finally, 1391 implants were placed in 295 patients after bioactivating the surface with PRGF. Stability and implant survival were evaluated. The implant surface adsorbed the protein-rich material as shown by ESEM. In the animal study, osseointegration was enhanced when the surface was covered with PRGF ...
The use of a barrier membrane, with or without osseous allograft, has been shown to establish regeneration of osseous tissue around dental implants. Following three episodes of persistent symptomatic failed apicoectomy and subsequent tooth extraction, an osseointegrated implant was placed in a wide fenestrated defect. Demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft was covered by an occlusive expanded polytetrafluorethylene membrane. The reentry procedure revealed complete bone fill that followed the texture of the augmentation material beyond the previous buccal bony envelope ...

BACKGROUND: Wear particles, found at the bone-implant interface surrounding a loose prosthesis, are commonly phagocytosed by macrophages. Wear particles and wear particle-containing macrophages are also found in regional lymph nodes draining arthroplasty tissues. The means by which wear particles are transported from arthroplasty tissues to lymph nodes is uncertain, as the presence or absence of lymphatic vessels in periprosthetic tissues has not been established. METHODS: We determined immunophenotypic expression of LYVE-1 and podoplanin, two highly specific lymphatic endothelial cell markers, in the hip arthroplasty pseudocapsule surrounding the false joint and the bone-implant interface of the femoral and acetabular pseu-domembrane. RESULTS: LYVE-1+/podoplanin+ lymphatic vessels were not identified in the pseudomembrane but were found in the pseudocapsule. Normal bone did not contain lymphatic vessels. INTERPRETATION: Our findings suggest that the wear particles shed at the bone-implant interface are
Fibrous encapsulation can impair implant osseointegration and cause implant failure but currently there are limited strategies to address this problem. Since bisphosphonates (BPs), a class of drugs widely used to treat bone diseases, was recently found to induce fibroblast apoptosis, we hypothesize that by loading BPs on titanium (Ti) implant surface, fibrous encapsulation may be inhibited with simultaneous enhancement of implant osseointegration. This strategy of local administration can also be expected to minimize the adverse side effects of BPs, which are associated with intravenous injections. To verify this hypothesis, alendronate was loaded on Ti surface via a hydroxyapatite (CaP) coating, and the effects of the loaded alendronate on fibroblast proliferation and apoptosis, and osteoblast proliferation, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and apoptosis were investigated in vitro. With a surface density of loaded alendronate 0.046 mg/cm2 or higher, fibroblast proliferation was suppressed ...
Titanium implants are nowadays often used in orthopedics and dentistry to repair or replace bone injuries or defects caused by aging, accident or diseases. Even if titanium is biocompatible, a low osseointegration between the implant and the surrounding tissue may result in graft rejection and a series of unwanted reactions. To overcome these issues, two main strategies have been investigated: a physicochemical modification of the implant surface (e.g. roughness, energy or chemistry of the surface) or a functionalization of the surface with cell adhesive molecules. This research project will mainly focus on the second approach which consists on the biofunctionalization of the surface. There are many types of cell adhesive molecules that can be used for such purpose. One of the most common family of cell adhesive molecules used are the proteins found in the extra cellular matrix (ECM).The cell bonding activity of these proteins is usually contained within a few amino acids. This is the case of ...
To study the effects of different designs in single mandibular molar implant restoration on the stress distribution of implant-bone interface. Methods: Three-dimensional finite element method were used. Results: When wide-diameter implant or two-implant were used to replace single mandibular molar, the stress of implant-bone interface was much lower than that of standard-diameter implant restoration. Comparison between wide-diameter implant and two-implant replacement showed that the former created lower stress. The difference was more obvious under oblique loads. Conclusion: Using wide-diameter implant or two-implant to restore single mandibular molar should be recommended in clinical practice. If adequate bone quantity is provided, using wide-diameter implant should be better.
There is a lack of histological information about the influence of cigarette smoke on bone around surface-treated implants. The aim of the present study was to test the influence of titanium surface treatment on osseointegration in animals that were exposed to intermittent cigarette smoke inhalation. Twenty-two male Wistar rats were used. One tibia, chosen at random, received a machined titanium implant (MI) while the other received an aluminum oxide-blasted surface implant (ABI). The animals were randomly assigned to one of the following groups: Group 1 - control (n=11) and Group 2 - intermittent cigarette smoke inhalation (n=11). Sixty days after surgery, the animals were sacrificed. The degree of bone-to-implant contact (BIC), bone filling (BF) within the limits of the threads of the implants and bone density (proportion of mineralized bone in a 500-mu m-wide zone lateral to the implant - BD) were measured in the cortical (zone A) and cancellous bone (zone B) areas. Data analysis showed ...

A dental implant (also known as an endosseous implant or fixture) is a surgical component that interfaces with the bone of the jaw or skull to support a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge, denture, facial prosthesis or to act as an orthodontic anchor. The basis for modern dental implants is a biologic process called osseointegration where materials, such as titanium, form an intimate bond to bone. The implant fixture is first placed, so that it is likely to osseointegrate, then a dental prosthetic is added. A variable amount of healing time is required for osseointegration before either the dental prosthetic (a tooth, bridge or denture) is attached to the implant or an abutment is placed which will hold a dental prosthetic.. Success or failure of implants depends on the health of the person receiving it, drugs which impact the chances of osseointegration and the health of the tissues in the mouth. The amount of stress that will be put on the implant and fixture during normal function is ...

Nowadays, numerous internal bone remodelling concepts are under development, in order to estimate long-term functionality of implants by evaluating the intensity of stress-shielding effect. This effect is also analysed for the implants for direct skeletal attachment, considered as a better exoprosthesis fixation method than prosthetic sockets. Most of bone remodelling approaches are based on basic concepts, differing with certain assumptions, which may affect the accuracy of the results. This article compares commonly used internal bone remodelling concepts and evaluates the functionality of the proposed Limb Prosthesis Osseointegrated Fixation System for direct skeletal attachment of limb prosthesis in comparison with two currently available implants: the Intraosseous Transcutaneous Amputation Prosthesis and the Osseointegrated Prostheses for the Rehabilitation of Amputees ...
Background: The increasing incidence of prosthesis revision surgery in the Western world has led to an increased focus on the capacity for stem removal. We previously reported on a femoral stem implanted in goats with an approximate 15% reduction in retention force by drilling longitudinally orientated grooves on the side of the stem. In this current study, we aimed to histologically evaluate the bony apposition towards this stem and correlate this apposition with the pullout force. Methods: We analyzed the femora of 22 goats after stem removal. All stems remained in place for 6 months, and the goats were allowed regular loading of the hip during this time. For histological evaluation, all femora were immersed in EDTA and decalcified until sufficiently soft for standard technique preparation. We evaluated bone apposition, the presence of foreign particle debris and other factors. The apposition was evaluated with a scoring system based on semi-quantitative bone apposition in four quadrants. ...
Purpose: To investigate osseointegration of oral implants, which were retrieved from a patient after 29 years in situ, we use novel three-dimensional analysis methods and visualization techniques that supplement conventional two-dimensional analysis. Materials and Methods: The sample processing involved nondecalcification and embedment in resin. Conventional two-dimensional histomorphometrical methods were conducted. Additionally, the quantification was extended to three-dimensional by using synchrotron radiation micro-computed tomography (SRmCT) technique and two relevant visualization methods for the three-dimensional data were introduced. Results: The three-dimensional results involved three-dimensional quantification and visualization of two implant samples with methods beyond state-of-the-art. Traditional two-dimensional histomorphometrical results revealed a mean bone-implant contact (BIC) of about 50%. In most samples, bone area (BA) was lower inside the treads compared with out-folded ...
BACKGROUND: The concept of osseointegration involves direct contact between titanium implant and bone. This transcutaneous prosthetic system for amputees is intended to assure stable long-term fixation. Most metal transcutaneous implants have failed, primarily owing to infection. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We determined the frequency and describe the presentation of infectious complications with this novel method. We also evaluated the bacterial flora at the skin-penetration area and its relation to the development of local and implant-related infection. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We prospectively followed 39 patients with arm and leg amputations fitted with transcutaneous osseointegrated titanium implants a mean of 56 months earlier (range, 132-133 months). There were 33 femoral, one tibial, four ulnar, four radial, and three humeral implants. Patients were selected during a 6-month period in 2005 and identically reevaluated after 3 years. Implant infection was defined as definite, probable, or possible ...
Percutaneous osseointegrated (OI) implants for direct skeletal attachment of upper extremity prosthetics represent an alternative to traditional socket suspension that may yield improved patient function and satisfaction. This is especially true in high-level, transhumeral amputees where prosthetic fitting is challenging and abandonment rates remain high. However, maintaining mechanical integrity of the bone-implant interface is crucial for safe clinical introduction of this technology. The collection of population data on the transhumeral loading environment will aid in the design of compliance and overload protection devices that mitigate the risk of periprosthetic fracture ...
A technique to enhance the stability of dental and orthopedic implants (including artificial joints and fractures) by inducing implant micromotion via a permanent magnet coupled to the implant which is vibrated using a cyclic magnetic force to enhance growth and apposition of the surrounding bone. In the preferred embodiment the implant temporarily holds a rigidly fixed, permanent magnet that is oscillated by an externally applied, time varying moving magnetic field of controlled frequency and intensity. Movement of the internal magnet transmits movement to the implant and effects stimulation of the implant-bone interface.
Commercially pure titanium (Ti-cp) is extensivelyemployed for dental implants applications due to its goodbiocompatibility, mechanical properties and corrosionresistance.

Results: Healing was generally uneventful. A removal torque analysis showed significantly higher mean (± SE) peak values for the control implants than for the test implants at 2 weeks (31.4 ± 2.5 Ncm versus 20.4 ± 1.8 Ncm) and 4 weeks (48.4 ± 5.5 Ncm versus 30.3 ± 3.9 Ncm). Light microscopy showed no significant differences in local bone density around control and test implants at 2 and 4 weeks (range, 85% to 91% within the thread area and 91% to 95% immediately outside the threads). At 2 weeks, bone-implant contact for control and test implants averaged 81.8% ± 2.8% and 75.7% ± 4.6%, respectively, and at 4 weeks the bone-implant contact values were 79.4% ± 2.8% and 73.5% ± 4.2%, respectively; these differences were not significant. Backscatter scanning electron microscopy also showed no significant differences in local bone density at control and test implants at 2 and 4 weeks (range, 55% to 72% within the thread area and 75% to 81% immediately outside the threads). At 2 weeks, ...

The implant was designed by EIT Emerging Implant Technologies GmbH, a newly formed company that is dedicated to 3D-printed implant solutions. EIT partnered with 3D Systems in the 3D design and manufacturing process.. This additive manufacturing method allows the material to mimic the trabecular bone structure. EIT cellular Titanium with micro-, macro- and nanostructural features provides high stability and speeds up the bone healing and fusion process. It provides an optimal biomechanical and biological environment for natural bone ingrowth without the need to add bone graft. The individualisation fits exactly to the patients individual anatomy.. The goal of the individualisation of a series implants is to reduce typical implant-related complications such as migration, subsidence or delayed fusion, all of which are related to insufficient bone-implant contact of standard implants.. Spetzger said, We are fascinated by the possibilities of this new technology combining modern computer-aided ...
Orthopedic implants often loosen due to the invasion of fibrous tissue. The aim of this study was to devise a novel implant surface that would speed healing adjacent to the surface, and create a stable interface for bone integration, by using a chemoattractant for bone precursor cells, and by controlling tissue migration at implant surfaces via specific surface microgeometry design. Experimental surfaces were tested in a canine implantable chamber that simulates the intramedullary bone response around total joint implants. Titanium and alloy surfaces were prepared with specific microgeometries, designed to optimize tissue attachment and control fibrous encapsulation. TGFß, a mitogen and chemoattractant (Hunziker EB, Rosenberg LC. J Bone Joint Surg Am 1996;78:721-733) for osteoprogenitor cells, was used to recruit progenitor cells to the implant surface and to enhance their proliferation. Calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CS) was the delivery vehicle for TGFß; CS resorbs rapidly and appears to be ...
Percutaneous fixation implants anchor a prosthesis to a selected bone, which increases mobility, but can cause infection, skin regression, and early implant failure. Such complications require surgery to replace the implant and involve long recovery periods that reduce the quality of life for amputees. The Modular Osseointegrated, Porous-coated Prosthetic Abutment System (MOPPAS) alleviates complications associated…

Since the 1980s, hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2; HA) has been used as a coating material for orthopaedic implant applications owing to its bioactivity and similarity in composition to bone mineral (Constantz et al. 1995). It was found to be capable of supporting bone ingrowth and osseointegration (Hench 1998). Therefore, it had significant success in strengthening the fixation between the implant and bone tissue, thus reducing the healing period during orthopaedic implantation practice (Oonishi 1991).. However, in addition to surface chemistry, a number of studies have shown that the surface topography can be another significant factor in influencing the initial cellular response and therefore subsequent bone tissue regeneration (Curtis & Wilkinson 1997). The work of Britland et al. (1996) compared a chemical cue (laminin) oriented at right angles with a topographic factor. When the grooves were ,500 nm deep, the cells reacted mainly with the chemical cue. When deeper grooves were present, the ...
The new implant system uses a titanium implant connected directly into the bone of the arm, as part of a process called osseointegration. This creates a long-term stable fusion between the patient and their implant, which Dr. Ortiz-Catalan explains in detail:. The artificial arm is directly attached to the skeleton, thus providing mechanical stability. Then the humans biological control system, that is nerves and muscles, is also interfaced to the machines control system via neuromuscular electrodes. This creates an intimate union between the body and the machine; between biology and mechatronics.. Connecting electrodes directly to the nerves and muscles means that patients can control their prosthesis more easily and with greater precision, enabling them to handle smaller and more delicate items.. Due to the close proximity between the electrodes and the nerves controlling the device, activity from other muscles is prevented from interfering with the device, allowing the patient to move the ...

The use of biophosphates by women has proven to cause hip fractures by making the bone more brittle. In fact, if you take this drug, you cannot have dental implants. Like smoking, fosamax is a contraindication for dental implants as osseointegration of the implant with the bone may be compromised. Anyone taking fosamax, should discuss this with their physician. I do not recommend this prescription medicine ...

Patients with hopeless dentition often present difficulties in the management of the transitional phase to the final restoration. This article describes a staged approach to achieve a full-arch, implant-supported, removable prosthesis in patients with a hopeless dentition. The approach described allows the clinician to proceed in a staged manner and facilitate prosthetic steps by keeping fixed references for vertical dimension. This technique includes initial conservative periodontal care and, afterward, extraction of some strategic teeth, while others are temporarily maintained. At this point, the implants are positioned, and during the healing period, the remaining natural abutments are used for occlusal reference and to stabilize the removable provisional prosthesis. After osseointegration of the implants, the residual teeth are extracted and the final prosthesis is delivered. The main advantages of the technique include maintenance of function during treatment, stabilization of the removable ...
The satisfactory positioning of an implant during dental surgery is essential to the success of the treatment. However, accidents can occur during the period of osseointegration, leading to implant movements that hinder or may even prevent prosthetic rehabilitation. Implants can be repositioned through sandwich osteotomy, which has been labeled a versatile, viable and predictable technique in the literature. The aim of the present study was to report a case involving the esthetic displacement of an implant, caused by a sports accident, which was repositioned using sandwich osteotomy, with the interposition of lyophilized bovine bone between the osteotomized segments. In order to adequately perform this repositioning, the authors devised a guide to assist with the positioning process ...

DOI: 10.11607/prd.00.0110 The purpose of this study was to evaluate: (1) the surgical protocol, effectiveness, and reliability for vertical ridge augmentation using a new titanium-reinforced membrane and osseointegrated implants; and (2) the histologic characteristics of the interface between a pure titanium implant and newly regenerated human bone. Five patients received 15 conical Br nemark-type implants in six different surgical sites requiring vertical augmentation. The implants protruded 4 to 7 mm from the bone crest. Pure titanium miniscrews (1.3 x 10 mm) were positioned distally to the implants, protruding 3 to 4 mm from the bone level. The implants and the miniscrews were covered with a titanium-reinforced membrane, and the flaps were sutured. Membranes were removed at the stage 2 surgery after 9 months of healing. Measurements of biopsy specimens showed a gain in bone height from 3 to 4 mm. Histologic examination showed that all retrieved miniscrews were in direct contact with bone. ...
Xiaolong Zhu is the twelfth recipient of this prestigious prize. He was selected by the jury for his scientific study of biochemical modifications of titanium implant surfaces designed to promote osseointegration (the growth of bone into the implant surface structure). Osseointegration is necessary for the implant to achieve long-term stability. A special method was used to synthesize a nano-hydroxyapatite (HA) prototype that closely mimics the mineral phase of bone. Nano-HA was mixed with collagen gel and coated onto pure titanium or titanium oxide. Bone cells subsequently showed an excellent adhesion to the nano-HA/collagen surface. The conclusion of Dr. Zhus study is that this approach may lead to further optimization of osseointegration. Source: ...
An improved osseous integration of dental implants in patients with lower bone quality is of particular interest. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of artificial extracellular matrix implant coatings on early bone formation. The coatings contained collagen (coll) in conjunction with either chondroitin sulfate (CS) or sulfated hyaluronan (sHya). Thirty-six screw-type, grit-blasted, and acid-etched titanium implants were inserted in the mandible of 6 minipigs. Three surface states were tested: (1) uncoated control (2) coll/CS (3) coll/sHya. After healing periods of 4 and 8 weeks, bone implant contact (BIC), bone volume density (BVD) as well as osteoid related parameters were measured. After 4 weeks, control implants showed a BIC of 44% which was comparable to coll/CS coated implants (48%) and significantly higher compared to coll/sHya coatings (37%, p = 0.012). This difference leveled out after 8 weeks. No significant differences could be detected for BVD values after 4 weeks and ...

New studies show anti-depressant medication is leading to bone loss and dental implant failure…. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are globally popular antidepressants. But they increase dental implant failure! Recent studies by McGill University and NIH further supported previous evidence about SSRIs having negative effects on bone, particularly in bone mineral density and fracture. Specifically, an article done by the Journal of Dental Research, states there is risk of osseointegrated implant failure. Since osseointegration is influenced by bone metabolism, this study was done to examine the relationship between SSRIs and the risk of failure. The study was conducted on patients treated with dental implants from January 2007 to January 2013. A total of 916 dental implants in 490 patients (94 implants on 51 patients using SSRIs).. After 3 to 67 months of follow-up, 38 dental implants failed and 784 succeeded in the nonusers group, while 10 failed and 84 succeeded in the ...
Basal implants are gaining popularity at recent times and emerging as alternate option to avoid sinus lift and other grafting procedures. Due to their unique design of horizontal disc component which gets engaged in basal cortical bone, they can be installed even in those cases, where the vertical bone supply is reduced such as moderate to severe atrophic ridges.

Launch Titanium (Ti) implants are trusted for the recovery of missing tooth. However, Ti alone does little to market new bone development on the top of Ti implant. This bone tissue formation process, referred to as osseointegration, delays implant launching and will increase implant success time. ...
One notable complication of mini-implants that are used to provide anchorage in orthodontic treatment is loosening. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between mini-implant mobility during the healing phase and the prognosis for implant stability.. Twenty male Wistar rats (aged 20 weeks) were used. Drills with diameters of 0.8, 0.9, 1.0, and 1.1 mm were used to make pilot holes in the rat tibiae. The inserted mini-implants (diameter 1.4 mm; spearhead 1.2 mm; halfway between maximum and minimum 1.3 mm; length 4.0 mm) were subjected to an experimental traction of force for 3 weeks. Bone-to-implant contact (BIC) was observed histologically. Another 20 male rats (aged 20 weeks) underwent an identical procedure, and the stability of the mini-implants was measured using the Periotest before and after traction. The data were statistically analysed using Scheffés test.. The BIC ratios of the 0.9 and 1.0 mm groups were significantly greater than those of the other groups. The ...
The present study examined the effect of applying a pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) on bone formation around a rough-surfaced dental implant. A dental implant was inserted into the femur of Japanese white rabbits bilaterally. A PEMF with a pulse width of 25 ms and a pulse frequency of 100 Hz was applied. PEMF stimulation was applied for 4 h or 8 h per day, at a magnetic intensity of 0.2 mT, 0.3 mT or 0.8 mT. The animals were sacrificed 1, 2 or 4 weeks after implantation. After staining the resin sections with 2% basic fuchsin and 0.1% methylene blue, newly formed bone around the implant on tissue sections was evaluated by computer image analysis. The bone contact ratios of the PEMF-treated femurs were significantly larger than those of the control groups. Both the bone contact ratio and bone area ratio of the 0.2 mT- and 0.3 mT treated femurs were significantly larger than the respective value of the 0.8 mT treated femurs (P°0.001). No significant difference in bone contact ratio or bone ...
Mesoporous materials are of high interest as implant coatings to receive an enhanced osseointegration. In this study, titanium implants coated with mesoporous TiO(2) thin films have been evaluated both in vitro and in vivo. Material characterization showed that, with partly crystalline TiO(2) (anatase), long-range-ordered hydrophilic mesoporous thin films with a pore size of 6nm were obtained. Evaluation of the mechanical resistance showed that the films were robust enough to withstand the standard implantation procedure. In vitro apatite formation was studied using simulated body fluids, showing that the pores are accessible for ions and that formation of apatite was increased due to the presence of the mesopores. An in vivo study using a rabbit model was executed in which the removal torque and histomorphometry were evaluated. The results show that the biomechanical stability of the TiO(2) coating was unaffected by the presence of mesopores and that osseointegration was achieved without any signs of

In this study, we investigated the effect of predifferentiated rat adipose tissue-derived osteoblastic cells (OBs) and endothelial cells (ECs) on calvarial bone allograft healing and vascularization using an ...
A dental implant is a titanium root device used in dentistry to support restorations that resemble a tooth or group of teeth to replace missing teeth.. Virtually all dental implants placed today are root-form endosseous implants, i.e., they appear similar to an actual tooth root (and thus possess a root-form) and are placed within the bone (endo- being the Greek prefix for in and osseous referring to bone). The bone of the jaw accepts and osseointegrates with the titanium post. The osseointegration is the component of this implant procedure that makes it resemble the look and feel of a natural tooth ...
It has been suggested that surface modification with a thin hydroxyapatite (HA) coating enhances the osseointegration of titanium implants. However, there is insufficient information about the biological processes involved in the HA-induced response. This study aimed to investigate the inflammatory cell response to titanium implants with either amorphous or crystalline thin HA. Human mononuclear cells were cultured on titanium discs with a machined surface or with a thin, 0.1 μm, amorphous or crystalline HA coating. Cells were cultured for 24 and 96 h, with and without lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation. The surfaces were characterized with respect to chemistry, phase composition, wettability and topography. Biological analyses included the percentage of implant-adherent cells and the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokine (TNF-α) and growth factors (BMP-2 and TGF-β1). Crystalline HA revealed a smooth surface, whereas the amorphous HA displayed a porous structure, at nano-scale, and a ...

In conventional dentistry, titanium dental implants are used often because of properties that allow them to bond with living bone tissue, a process known as osseointegration. Today, over 95 percent of dental implant procedures performed use titanium alloys. Although prevalent, titanium dental implants are not the only option in reconstructive dentistry. Many patients have concerns… ...
Titanium and its alloys are preferred for hard tissue implant materials, however, their inherent bioinertia cause poor osseointegration. Besides, they is lack of antibacterial ability, which results in the risk of implant-related infections. It is well known, the biological effects of implant materials are related to their surface microenvironment. Therefore, it is significant to explore the effect of the surface microenvironment on the behaviors of bacteria and cells. The pH value of the microenvironment is significant to the behaviors of bacteria and cells. And in general, weakly acidic microenvironment is beneficial to the survival of bacteria, and weakly alkaline microenvironment is conducive to bone formation. Therefore, constructing functional coating with tunable alkaline microenvironment on titanium is expected to endow it selective antibacterial and osteogenic abilities. From this perspective, various alkaline coatings were constructed on the surface of biomedical titanium via ...
Dental implant is the treatment option when the tooth is lost. A dental implant is a titanium post that replaces the root of the missing tooth/teeth. It is surgically placed into the jaw bone to serve as an anchor of the missing tooth/teeth. The bone grows around the implant to form a fused bone-implant contact for better stability and support.. Dental implants help to prevent further bone loss and prevent the bone from collapsing. They can be placed and or loaded at the same time that the tooth or teeth are extracted or they can be placed after the proper bone healing occurs. It depends of the case. The time of placement varies from case to case and patient situation.. Sometimes bone graft procedures are needed prior implant placement to create the perfect host site for the future implant outcome.. ...

Background The dorsogluteal and ventrogluteal intramuscular injection sites both have their use in clinical practice; however, it has not been established in whom one or the other should be preferentially targeted or avoided. There is a need for an evidence-based approach towards site selection for a successful intramuscular injection outcome and to avoid unwanted injection outcomes of inadvertent subcutaneous injection or bone contact. Injection outcome is dependent on injection site subcutaneous fat thickness and muscle thickness; these are likely influenced by gender and anthropometry. Objectives To determine whether subcutaneous fat, muscle, and total tissue thicknesses differ between the dorsogluteal and ventrogluteal sites, and whether theoretical injection outcome (intramuscular, subcutaneous, or bone contact) can be predicted by demographic and anthropometric data and described by an algorithm. Design Cross-sectional study design. Settings University in Australia. Participants 145 volunteers
No adverse local tissue effects were observed in any group. At 12 weeks, the bone flap fixation strengths in test group 1 (1689 ± 574 N) and test group 2 (1611 ± 501 N) were both statistically greater (p = 0.01) than that in the control group (663 ± 385 N). From 12 weeks to 1 year, the bone flap fixation strengths increased significantly (p , 0.05) for all groups. At 1 year, the flap fixation strength in test group 1 (3240 ± 423 N) and test group 2 (3212 ± 662 N) were both statistically greater (p = 0.04 and p = 0.02, respectively) than that in the control group (2418 ± 1463 N); however, there was no statistically significant difference in the strengths when comparing the test groups at both timepoints. Test group 1 had the best overall performance based on histomorphometric evaluation and biomechanical testing. At 2 years postoperatively, the kerfs filled with TTCP-PS had histological evidence of osteoconduction and replacement of TTCP-PS by bone with nearly complete osteointegration. ...
The objective of the presented prospective clinical trial was the investigation of the behavior of implants with chemically modified surface using an early loading protocol in bone with reduced density. It was found that in most cases (89%) even in D3 and D4 bone an early loading protocol with prosthetic rehabilitation of hydrophilic implants after 8 weeks could be successfully performed.. The chemical modification of the used implants is based on conditioning of the surface with OH-ions. Hydroxylated titanium surfaces possess higher surface free energy and hydrophilicity [20] leading to increased production of osteogenic factors such as osteocalcin and growth factors [10]. In a pilot study in dogs, Schwarz et al. [21] found a significantly stronger proliferation of vascular structures as well as an increased osteocalcin activity and improved bone building processes for chemically modified, hydroxylated surfaces as compared to conventional surfaces.. A faster bone apposition rate was found ...

A dental implant is a surgical component that interfaces with the bone of the jaw or skull to support a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge, denture, facial prosthesis or to act as an orthodontic anchor. The basis for modern dental implants is a biologic process called osseointegration, in which materials such as titanium form an intimate bond to bone. The implant fixture is first placed so that it is likely to .. ...
Fixed retainer after orthodontic treatment is an increasing retention appliance. For the mandibular incisors there are two different fixed retainers that are commonly used, either a canine-to-canine retainer bonded only to the canines or a twistflex retainer bonded to each of the mandibular incisors and canines. Increased mandibular incisor irregularity seems to be a continuous process throughout life even in untreated patients. The natural physiological changes during aging causes changes like those that occur after orthodontic treatment and the removal of retainers. There are few long-term studies that have compared patients who have had a mandibular fixed retainer with patients without retention appliance after treatment, and then compared the treated patients with untreated subjects. The overall aim of this thesis was to compare and evaluate two different mandibular fixed retainers and also to compare orthodontically treated cases with untreated long-term. This thesis is based on two studies ...

Abstract: Osseointegration has a successful track record, however some recent developments have included reduced prosthesis loading times and development of new prosthetic materials. Todays clinician has several new materials to choose from compared to the past. A thorough understanding of the material properties is critical to selecting the appropriate material for the patient using an evidence-based protocol. This case report demonstrates patient rehabilitation with a monolithic zirconia complete arch prosthesis supported by endosseous dental implants. The rationale and clinical decision making as to why this was the optimal treatment will be discussed in detail for this patient ...
Background The application of nanotechnology to biomedical surfaces is explained by the ability of cells to interactwith nanometric features. The aim of this study was to consider the role of nanoscale topographic modification of CPTidental implant using chemical etching method for the purpose of improving osseointegration.Materials and methods: Commercial pure titanium rod was machined into 20 dental implants. Each implant wasmachined in diameter about 3mm, length of 8mm (5mm was threaded part and 3mm was flat part). Implants wereprepared and divided into 2 groups according to the types of surface modification method used: 1st group (10implant) remained without nano surface modification (control), 2nd group include (10 implant) etched with 15N H2SO4and 30% H2O2, Surfaces were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Xray diffraction (XRD), atomicforce microscope (AFM), thickness measurement for the invitro experiments. While for invivo part tibia of 5 white newZealand rabbits were ...
Discussion: The osteoinductive and regenerative potential of rhBMP-2 is of clinical benefit in cases where bone augmentation is indicated and improved levels of osseointegration are expected. Radiographic evaluation has been the most widely employed technique in clinical practice for assessing bone levels around dental implants and comparing changes over time. However, there is a limit to the diagnostic accuracy of conventional radiographs when compared to the data obtained by histologic analysis ...
A retrospective evaluation of 273 consecutive posterior partially edentulous patients treated with 745 implants, 7 or 9 mm long, supporting 338 restorations over a 1- to 5-year period was reviewed from four private offices. Implant survival data were collected relative to stage I to stage II healing, stage II to prosthesis delivery, and prosthesis delivery to as long as 6 years follow-up.. A biomechanical approach to decrease stress to the posterior implants included splinting implants together with no cantilever load, restoring the patient with a mutually protected or canine guidance occlusion, and selecting an implant designed to increase bone-implant contact surface area.. Results: Of the 745 implants inserted, there were six surgical failures from stage I to stage II healing. All five failures were with a one-stage surgical approach (240 implants). There were two failures from stage II healing to prosthesis delivery. No implants failed after the 338 final implant prostheses were delivered. A ...
The Trigon system, made from PEEK-OPTIMA HA Enhanced, enables a standard surgical technique that allows direct and exact placement of implant and screws without additional plating. Nvision collaborated with Invibio for the FDA 510(k) submission to obtain clearance for the new implant.. PEEK-OPTIMA HA Enhanced provides a potential for earlier fusion/union for foot and ankle implants, a surgeons primary goal for fusion surgery. It does so because Hydroxyapatite (HA) is fully integrated within the matrix of Invibios PEEK-OPTIMA Natural. As it is integrated, not coated, the HA is available on all surfaces of a finished device. In combination with a modulus of elasticity closely matching that of actual bone, PEEK-OPTIMA HA Enhanced has the potential to promote faster bone ongrowth and healing. Its radiolucent properties result in artifact-free imaging with the ability to easily monitor the healing process.. After initially focusing on spinal implants, Nvision is now applying many of the same ...
