Definition of Orthodontic appliance in the Legal Dictionary - by Free online English dictionary and encyclopedia. What is Orthodontic appliance? Meaning of Orthodontic appliance as a legal term. What does Orthodontic appliance mean in law?
A low profile orthodontic appliance and method of designing custom and standard low profile orthodontic appliances are provided. The archwire of the appliance is not parallel to the dental archform but converges toward the archform preferably in the vicinity of the incisors. Slotted brackets on either the laterals, the cuspids or the first bicuspids have mesially rotated slots to support the archwire in sloped relation to the teeth. For standardized appliances, the slot rotation may be provided only in brackets for the upper laterals and the lower cuspids. For Caucasians, the preferred rotation angles are 4.5 and 6 degrees respectively. For Asians, the rotation angles are preferably distributed over brackets for the laterals, cuspids and first bicuspids. Tooth to archwire spacing is not more than 0.05 inches for all teeth but the upper laterals. The archwire shape is designed in custom appliances by digitizing tooth shape of a patient, calculating ideal finish tooth positions and ideal bracket
A bonding tray for indirect bonding of orthodontic appliances includes a body adapted to fit over at least a portion of the dental arch. One or more orthodontic appliances are releasably connected to the body, and a photocurable adhesive material extends across the base or bonding pad of each appliance for bonding the appliance to a tooth. An outer surface of the body includes at least one receptacle for removably receiving a source of light in order to facilitate curing the photocurable adhesive material.
Fixed orthodontic appliances might be associated with intraoral adverse effects on enamel, due to plaque accumulation and their colonization by oral microbes. At the same time, the demand for esthetic alternatives to orthodontic treatment, like thermoplastic aligners, is growing. However, thermoplastic aligners may behave differently intraorally than fixed appliances in terms of bacterial colonization and biofilm formation. Therefore, the aim of this prospective cohort study was to assess the salivary prevalence of the cariogenic bacteria Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Streptococcus sanguinis among adolescents treated orthodontically with thermoplastic aligners or fixed appliances. Thirty adolescent patients (17 girls/13 boys; mean age 13.8 years old) were assigned to treatment with either (i) self-ligating fixed appliances with nickel-titanium archwires or (ii) aligners constructed from clear transparent polyethylenterephthalat-glycol copolyester (PET-G) thermoplastic sheets.
An indirect bonding apparatus is made by initially placing spacer material over a replica of the patients tooth structure. A tray is then formed over the spacer material and hardened. Next, the spacer material is removed from the tooth replica and orthodontic appliances are placed on the replica at desired locations. A matrix material is placed between the tray and the replica and allowed to harden. Optionally, the apparatus includes features for facilitating removal of the transfer apparatus after the bonding procedure has been completed, and features for applying firm, uniform pressure to the appliances during the bonding procedure. Other aspects of indirect bonding are also described.
During fixed orthodontic treatment, metal wires are held in place by elastic bands on orthodontic brackets (braces) on each tooth and inserted into bands around the molars. The orthodontic archwires can be made from stainless steel, nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti)[19] or a more aesthetic ceramic material. Ni-Ti is used as the initial arch wire as it has good flexibility, allowing it to exert the same forces regardless of how much it has been deflected. There is also heat activated Ni-Ti wire which tightens when it is heated to body temperature.[20] The arch wires interact with the brackets to move teeth into the desired positions. Fixed orthodontic appliances aid tooth movement, and are used when a 3-D movement of the tooth is required in the mouth and multiple tooth movement is necessary. Ceramic fixed appliances can be used which more closely mimic the tooth colour than the metal brackets. Some manufacturers offer self-litigating fixed appliances where the metal wires are held by an integral clip on ...

Orthodontic treatment is the main treatment procedure to achieve a well-aligned dental arch and an esthetic smile. For this purpose, various types of removable or fixed orthodontic appliances are designed. However, each has their specific disadvantages. The most important one is that orthodontic appliances especially the brackets and the ligation mode create new retention areas in addition to blocking plaque-removing shear forces arising from fluid flow and masticatory loads with a resultant undesired effect of accumulation of dental plaque. Increased amount of dental plaque containing cariogenic bacteria is the main etiologic factor in decalcification of enamel during orthodontic treatment. This demineralization of the tooth surfaces results in appearance of white spots or even caries. However, in the literature, there are conflicting results in the relationship between orthodontic treatment and development of dental caries. Many preventive methods such as topical fluoride application, using bonding

A positive mold for use in creating an orthodontic appliance is produced by obtaining a digital dentition model, such as a 3D geometric surface model or a 3D volumetric image model, that defines the shape of an orthodontic appliance and then altering the digital dentition model to remove a portion that does not affect the shape of the orthodontic appliance. The altered digital dentition model then is used to construct a positive mold for the orthodontic appliance. Processing circuitry, such as a programmed computer, is used to obtain and alter the digital dentition model. A rapid prototyping device, such as a stereolithography machine, is commonly used to construct the positive mold.
An orthodontic appliance is provided which consists of a tooth positioner mouth piece which contains impressions of the upper and lower teeth of a patient in corrected positions, and an electric motor mounted on the extra oral bow of a usual orthodontic headgear, and mechanically coupled to the mouth piece for introducing vibrations into the mouth piece. In a second embodiment, the mouth piece is pulsed by an electrically energized hydraulic pump.

Having orthodontic treatment in childhood is ideal because we can take advantage of a youngsters natural growth processes to help move the teeth into proper alignment. Like the rest of the body, the teeth and jaws are now changing rapidly. So at this time its possible (for example) to create more room for teeth in a crowded mouth by using a "palatal expander" to rapidly widen the upper jaw. This phase of growth modification can shorten overall treatment time and ensure the best result if additional orthodontic appliances are needed.. But remember, healthy teeth can be moved at any age, so youve never "missed the boat" for orthodontic treatment. In fact, about one in five of todays orthodontic patients are adults. Several new technological developments - including tooth-colored ceramic braces, clear aligners and invisible lingual braces - have made orthodontic appliances less evident, and enhanced the treatment experience for grown-ups. Before treatment, adults are carefully examined for ...
Young adults, of typical age and gender distribution of lingual orthodontic patients [41, 42], were chosen as good candidates to wear lingual appliances (1) because they are more interested in esthetic appliances and then (2) because in children and adolescents, some teeth are partially erupted and not good for taking precise impressions for lingual setup and indirect bonding. Moreover, in the literature, we can find many articles analyzing various similar ranges of age [17, 22, 34, 43, 44]. The majority of patients enrolled in the present study were females less than 23 years of age. Stadelmann et al. found that almost a quarter of the population undergoes an orthodontic treatment, half of it with a mean age of 15 to 24 years old [45].. As regards intragroup differences, the significant increases in PI and GBI values from T 0 to T 2 in the lingual orthodontic group could be explained by the fact that plaque deposits on the lingual gingival margin of the teeth are more difficult to remove with ...

For patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea, oral appliances are a great form of treatment. The oral appliance is worn while you sleep and is used to keep your throat (airways) open. Some oral appliances work by slightly bringing your jaw forward.. Others work by holding your tongue down in place. Either form works to reduce snoring and help with mild sleep apnea. These oral appliances are usually available through your dentist.. Keep in mind that because there are several different types, you might need to use trial and error to find the right oral appliance for you. Dont get discouraged if the first one doesnt work well for you. You have options. Once you choose one, youll return to your dentist frequently during the first year of use to ensure it fits properly and is working well. ...
A retainer is an appliance used to stabilize the teeth in their current position. The 2 basic parts of a retainer are a custom-made acrylic bite plate and a stainless steel wire. Were seeing more and more adult orthodontic patients these days, and its not hard to figure out why. Appliances that are barely noticeable have been developed to give adults more discreet choices when it comes to orthodontic treatment. And many adults realize that investing in a smile makeover can have significant benefits, socially and professionally. Straightening teeth can be an important part of that confidence-boosting makeover process.. Healthy teeth can be moved at any age, so theres no such thing as being too old for braces. However, orthodontic treatment for adults is different in two important respects: For one thing, the growth and development of the jaws is complete in adults, so changes in actual jaw structure cant be accomplished with orthodontic appliances in the way they can with a growing child.. Secondly, periodontal (gum) disease is more prevalent in adults than in children. While you are wearing the orthodontic appliances, gentle forces will be applied to your teeth so ...
An appliance plug is a three-conductor power connector originally developed for kettles, toasters and similar small appliances. It was common in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden. It has largely been made obsolete and replaced by IEC 60320 C15 and C16 connectors, or proprietary connectors to base plates for cordless kettles. It still occurs on some traditional ceramic electric jugs. It is also used for some laboratory water stills. On some models of the classical ceramic electric jug, the appliance plug prevents the lid from being raised while the connector is inserted. This is important as during operation of these jugs, the water it contains is connected to the electric mains and is an electric shock risk. Appliance plugs were also used to supply power to electric toasters, electric coffee percolators, electric frypans, and many other appliances. An appliance plug is to some degree heat resistant, but the maximum working temperature varied from ...

Along with cereal, milk, and huge mounds of bananas, long lines at Commons waffle machines have become a fixture of breakfast at Phillips Academy because the circuit breakers in Commons have become overloaded by high-energy appliance, according to Commons Location Nanager John Njenga. To prevent such a situation, Food Services allows a limited number of waffle makers to operate together at any given time. Additionally, during high-traffic lunch and dinner times, the appliances are not set out for student use. Though these measures have perturbed hungry students, there have been no recent power overloads in Commons because of high waffle iron use. A handful of students have recently taken the initiative to seek out Food Service Director Bob Noyes about the possibility of installing additional waffle machines to shorten the length of the lines that presently accompany the two units currently in service in Lower Right and Lower Left dining halls. In spite of several conversations with personnel at ...
