Several studies [15],[23],[29],[30] evaluated the efficacy of the Pendulum appliance, reporting data relative to dentoalveolar and skeletal changes, but few studies [7],[14],[31] described molar distalization in the presence of fully erupted second molar. Segmented and Quad Pendulums were previously described by Kinzinger et al. in a case report study [21] and differed from most distalizing devices since TMA wires acted directly on second molars, without being distalized by a force applied on the first molar. Appliance design was based on the concepts of Gianelly [17] and Jeckel and Rakosi [18]; according to them, when the second molars have erupted, the distalization of the molars should be done in stages, first, the second molars and then the first molars.. No significant difference was found in molar distalization between the two appliances. The second molar distalized 3.8 mm in the SP and 3.2 mm in the QP, and the first molar distalized 4 and 3.5 mm, respectively, between T1 and T2. ...

The recent paradigm shift in orthodontics towards non-extraction treatment has been facilitated with the introduction of newer appliance systems such as self-ligating brackets. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of moderate to severe dental crowding on changes in incisor position and arch dimension in patients treated non-extraction using the Damon passive self-ligating system. It was hypothesized that patients do not experience a significant amount of labial movement of the incisors due to space being gained through arch expansion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Previous orthodontic records of 15 patients with a mean pre-treatment age of 14.4 years were obtained at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Orthodontics. The inclusion criteria were: treatment with Damon Q (Ormco) passive self-ligating brackets, class I malocclusion treated non-extraction, severe maxillary dental crowding (,6 mm), and a complete permanent dentition. The initial and final cephalograms and ...
Attached to the upper molars through bonding or by cemented bands, the Rapid Palatal Expander is an orthodontic device used to create a wider space in the upper jaw. It is typically used when the upper jaw is too narrow for the lower jaw or when the upper teeth are crowded or blocked out of the dental arch.. When patients are still growing, their connective tissue between the left and right halves of their upper jaw is very responsive to expansion. By simply activating the expander through turning a screw in the center of the palatal expander, with a special key we provide, gradual outward pressure is placed on the left and right halves of the upper jaw. This pressure causes an increased amount of bone to grow between the right and left halves of the jaw, ultimately resulting in an increased width.. ...
This paper reports on the bilateral distal movement of maxillary molars in the treatment of a dental Class II malocclusion with an appliance system that combines an active removable appliance with fixed molar bands and a cervical headgear. This combination of forces provides distal molar bodily movement where the molars have erupted or migrated mesially with a resultant loss of arch perimeter. The appliance system presented is a conservative, reliable technique that can be used to increase the maxillary arch length in growing as well as nongrowing patients ...
A palatal expander is an orthodontic appliance that fits in the roof of the mouth and is used to create more space in the upper jaw. If teeth are crowded or if more space is needed to allow permanent teeth to come in, we might recommend a palatal expander. If teeth do not have room to come in where they are supposed to, they may come in in front of other teeth, behind other teeth, or not come in at all. Sometimes they can be moved into place later but it is more difficult, more time consuming, and in some cases may make it necessary for permanent teeth to be extracted. Also, some children are self-conscious about teeth that are so obviously out of place.. ...
A major benefit of receiving orthodontic treatment in childhood is that its possible to take full advantage of a youngsters own natural growth process to treat or even prevent malocclusions ("bad bites"). A palatal expander is a device designed to help do that.. Palatal expanders create more space in a childs mouth by gradually widening the upper jaw. Although this may sound scary, its really quite easy - both to do and to tolerate. Thats because the upper jaw (maxilla) actually develops as two separate halves that dont completely fuse together until sometime after puberty. Before that happens, the two bones can gently be separated and stabilized over a period of several months.. The three situations that most commonly call for maxillary expansion are:. Crossbite - When a childs upper jaw is too narrow to fit correctly with the lower jaw, the back top teeth will bite inside of the lower teeth instead of outside. This can be corrected by expanding the upper jaw.. Crowding - Even before all ...

This finite element analysis was conducted to study the effects produced by a new fixed functional appliance (EFA; Elhiny functional appliance) and hence predict its clinical effectiveness. Under ANSYS environment, a simplified 2D finite element model was prepared for this study. The models simulated a clinical situation where the mandible was positioned forward via a new fixed functional appliance design. The models components were created on a commercial CAD/CAM package then imported to finite element software. Pushing load of 2 N was applied along the appliance longitudinal direction. The mandible showed downward and forward deformation in the X and Y directions with the highest deformation at the symphysis and lower border with a total deformation of 80 μm. There was little deformation in the maxilla. The highest strain results were at the condyle, both compressive and tensile in the X and Y directions with a total of 1520 micro strain behind the condyle. The strain in the mandibular tooth bearing

If you ask around how teeth can be aligned, the answer that youd most likely get is wearing dental braces. But if you inquire about it from a professional - say, the best dentist Reston, VA- youd know that you have other choices, and the most popular of which is the so-called Invisalign.. What is Invisalign. Like what you can imply from its name itself, Invisalign is a teeth-aligning alternative that can be considered virtually invisible. Instead of having metal brackets and wires, these removable aligners are made of flexible plastic that can be specifically made to fit your mouth perfectly. It can treat patients with overbite, underbite, crossbite, open bite, gap teeth, and crowded teeth.. While it does sound like a great option if you dont want to experience restrictions caused by traditional teeth alignment methods, not everyone is qualified to get Invisalign. If its a little bit more complicated, you might have to resort to the conventional way of correcting your teeth alignment. The ...

From top to bottom: 11-inch MBA, 13-inch MBA, 13-inch rMBP, 15-inch rMBP. The dimensions are very surprising. The 13-inch rMBP maintains a uniform thickness of 0.75-inches, 5.6% thicker than the 15-inch model (but obviously with less total volume thanks to a smaller planar footprint). Compared to the thickest point on the 13-inch MacBook Air however youre only gaining 0.07-inches. The weight difference is marginal as well. The 13-inch MBA shaves off only 0.61 lbs. The 15-inch rMBP is less than a pound heavier as well (0.89 lbs). Apple has done its best to make your decision about picking the right screen size and internals, almost entirely removing things like weight from the discussion. While the 13-inch MBA is still clearly a more portable device, I believe with the 13-inch rMBP Apple has built a chassis thats truly an alternative.. The downside to all of this is a machine that really cant be upgraded. Apple outfits all of the 13-inch rMBPs with 8GB of DDR3L-1600, although theres no BTO ...
Invisalign is a modern approach to straightening teeth that uses smooth, comfortable, virtually invisible plastic aligner trays to gradually and gently shift your teeth into place. There are no metal brackets and no wires to tighten. You just pop a new set of custom-made aligners into your mouth about every two weeks until your treatment is complete-generally a year for adults ...

There are three basic types of retainers available today; each works best in particular situations. The "Hawley" retainer is a thin, tongue-shaped piece of acrylic molded to fit your mouth, with a wire that holds your teeth in position. The Hawley retainer is simple, durable and easily removed. Its even possible to personalize it by choosing different colors and designs for the plastic arch.. Another popular style of retainer is the clear aligner-type, which looks similar to the Invisalign® tray system. These retainers are custom-made of thin, transparent plastic designed to fit precisely over your teeth. Their main advantage is that theyre invisible, with no wire to show. These retainers are also easy to remove, but they may be somewhat less durable than the Hawleys.. Finally, fixed retainers may be an option for some people, especially on the lower front teeth. As their name implies, they arent removable by the wearer - but they arent visible either. This system uses a wire which is ...

Aims: Previous studies on maxillary molar distalization have usually concentrated on only one appliance and featured small sample sizes. The purpose of this retrospective study was two-fold: (1) to determine the skeletal, dental, and soft tissue effects of 3 molar distalization appliances, 2 of which do not depend upon patient compliance (ie, distal jet and Greenfield molar distalizing appliance) and 1 that does (ie, sagittal appliance combined with cervical headgear); and (2) to determine differences in treatment effects among the 3 appliances. Methods: Pretreatment and post-distalization cephalometric radiographs were obtained for each appliance (14 females and 11 males for the distal jet; 12 females and 13 males for the Greenfield molar distalizing appliance; and 17 females and 13 males for the sagittal appliance with headgear). Results: Pretreatment to transition evaluation showed significant distal movement of the first molars for the distal jet (3.4 mm), the Greenfield molar distalizing ...

A low profile orthodontic appliance and method of designing custom and standard low profile orthodontic appliances are provided. The archwire of the appliance is not parallel to the dental archform but converges toward the archform preferably in the vicinity of the incisors. Slotted brackets on either the laterals, the cuspids or the first bicuspids have mesially rotated slots to support the archwire in sloped relation to the teeth. For standardized appliances, the slot rotation may be provided only in brackets for the upper laterals and the lower cuspids. For Caucasians, the preferred rotation angles are 4.5 and 6 degrees respectively. For Asians, the rotation angles are preferably distributed over brackets for the laterals, cuspids and first bicuspids. Tooth to archwire spacing is not more than 0.05 inches for all teeth but the upper laterals. The archwire shape is designed in custom appliances by digitizing tooth shape of a patient, calculating ideal finish tooth positions and ideal bracket

a) Maxillary Expansion Appliance (MEA):. This appliance is also called the rapid palatal expansion appliance or palatal expander. It widens an otherwise narrowed upper jaw by spreading the bony suture in the palate. It is highly effective in correction of crowding during preadolescence. In post-adolescent patients the sagittal suture system becomes less adaptive with a tendency for the expanded jaw to relapse.. b) Headgear:. An orthopedic appliance which reduces forward growth of the upper jaw, and therefore corrects the overbite (bucked teeth). It is made of two components, a face bow which is attached to the braces inside the mouth, and a traction mechanism which sits on top of the head or behind the neck. Headgear is usually worn at night.. c) Herbst:. A fix-functional appliance; it holds the lower jaw forward causing stimulation of growth in a forward direction. It is used for severe overbites when the lower jaw is underdeveloped.. ...
A bonding tray for indirect bonding of orthodontic appliances includes a body adapted to fit over at least a portion of the dental arch. One or more orthodontic appliances are releasably connected to the body, and a photocurable adhesive material extends across the base or bonding pad of each appliance for bonding the appliance to a tooth. An outer surface of the body includes at least one receptacle for removably receiving a source of light in order to facilitate curing the photocurable adhesive material.
A transformerless power controller provides low standby power (milliwatts) for standby circuitry/logic of an appliance when the appliance is not in use. The power controller also provides gradations of power for the appliance based on need of the appliance and/or appliance component(s). In one form, a signal from a processor of the appliance provides control of the power controller. Particularly, a control signal from the processor operates a switch for the gradations of available power. The control signal may further provide timing for application of the power to the appliance and/or appliance component(s).
