The effect of action goal hierarchy on the coding of object orientation in imitation tasks: evidence from patients with...
In order to explore parietal patients difficulties in the processing of orientation information, we asked parietal patients (N = 8) and healthy and brain-damaged controls to imitate multicomponent actions where object orientation was one component. In Experiment 1 orientation was not the most relevant aspect of the action to be imitated, and the parietal group showed significant difficulties in processing object orientation. However, in Experiment 2, where orientation was placed at the top end of the goal hierarchy, the parietal group were able to process stimulus orientation sufficiently to place it within the goal hierarchy of the action and to reproduce it accurately. We conclude that patients with parietal lesions might be able to include object orientation in a goal hierarchy, but if their processing of orientation information is impaired they might be disproportionately prone to errors when object orientation is lower in the goal hierarchy and so not prioritized for processing resources.
Cascaded Bayesian processes: an account of bias in orientation perception<...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Cascaded Bayesian processes: an account of bias in orientation perception. AU - Langley, Keith. AU - Lefebvre, Veronique. AU - Anderson, Stephen J.. PY - 2009/10/15. Y1 - 2009/10/15. N2 - Following adaptation to an oriented (1-d) signal in central vision, the orientation of subsequently viewed test signals may appear repelled away from or attracted towards the adapting orientation. Small angular differences between the adaptor and test yield repulsive shifts, while large angular differences yield attractive shifts. In peripheral vision, however, both small and large angular differences yield repulsive shifts. To account for these tilt after-effects (TAEs), a cascaded model of orientation estimation that is optimized using hierarchical Bayesian methods is proposed. The model accounts for orientation bias through adaptation-induced losses in information that arise because of signal uncertainties and neural constraints placed upon the propagation of visual information. Repulsive ...
Frontiers | The Effects of Aging on Orientation Discrimination | Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience
Visual perception relies on low-level encoding of local orientation. Recent studies show an age-dependent impairment in orientation discrimination of stimuli embedded in external noise, suggesting that encoding of orientation is inefficient in older adults. In the present study we ask whether aging also reduces decoding, i.e., selecting the neural representations of target orientation while discarding those conflicting with it. We compared younger and older participants capability (mean age 24 and 68 years respectively) in discriminating whether the orientation of a Gabor target was left or right from the vertical. We measured (d′), an index of discrimination sensitivity, for orientation offset ranging from 1° to 12°. In the isolated target condition, d′ was reduced by aging and, in the older group, did not increase with orientation offset, thus resulting in a larger group difference at large than small orientation offsets from the vertical. Moreover, oriented elements in the background impaired
Personal familiarity enhances sensitivity to horizontal structure during processing of face identity | JOV | ARVO Journals
Given the abundance of significant effects in the omnibus ANOVA, we simplified our subsequent analyses by computing a composite measure of orientation sensitivity across bandwidth. Specifically, we defined orientation sensitivity as the mean fitted proportion correct from 15°-90°, computed separately for horizontal and vertical filters. For this analysis we chose to utilize the proportion correct predicted from psychometric curves fit to the entire bandwidth range. This procedure reduced the effect of measurement noise, although analyses of the raw proportion correct values yielded qualitatively similar results. For ease of communication, we term the resulting measure orientation sensitivity, as it quantifies overall sensitivity to information conveyed by horizontally and vertically oriented filters irrespective of bandwidth. Orientation sensitivity, plotted in Figure 4, was submitted to a 2 (Familiarity) × 2 (Face Orientation) × 2 (Filter Orientation) ANOVA with face and filter orientation ...

Structured Long-Range Connections Can Provide a Scaffold for Orientation Maps | Journal of Neuroscience
Experimental evidence concerning plasticity of orientation selectivity in visual cortex poses an apparent dilemma. There are strong indications that orientation selectivity of single cells in visual cortex is experience-dependent and dependent on synaptic plasticity. On the other hand, preferred orientation seems very stable. Moreover, preferred orientation is identical for both eyes, even if they never experience common visual input.. To account for this, we propose that a scaffold is embedded in the structure of the long-range lateral connectivity. Its structure determines the initial orientation preference observed in animals with no visual experience and accounts for the stability in the orientation maps that develop in eyes with no common visual experience. The scaffold model is consistent with the broadly tuned, low-spatial frequency orientation selectivity seen in very young animals (DeAngelis et al., 1993). It is also consistent with the observation that orientation selectivity increases ...

Responses of macaque V1 neurons to binocular orientation differences. - Oxford Neuroscience
Interocular differences in orientation occur during binocular viewing of a surface slanted in depth. These orientation disparities could be exploited by the visual system to provide information about surface slant, but gradients of positional disparity provide an equally effective means to the same end. We examined the encoding of orientation disparities in V1 neurons that were recorded from two awake fixating monkeys. Monocular orientation selectivity was measured separately in each eye. Although the preferred monocular orientation in the left and right eyes was highly correlated (r = 0.98), 19 of 61 cells showed a significant interocular difference in preferred orientation (IDPO). By itself, an IDPO does not imply a specific binocular selectivity for orientation differences. We therefore examined the response to 25 binocular combinations of orientations by pairing each of five orientations in one eye with five in the other. Forty-four of 64 neurons showed responses that reflected the monocular

The activity induced by the collinear flankers depended on the preferred orientation of the recording sites. The orientation tuning of the recording sites was determined by measuring the responses to a moving bar stimulus (see Materials and Methods). We measured the orientation selectivity of the recording sites by computing an orientation selectivity ratio (OSR), defined as the ratio between the response to the best and the worst orientations, after subtraction of the baseline activity. OSRs ranged from 1.2 to 4.3 with a median of 1.7 (N = 38). For every recording site, we determined how well the horizontal orientation used in our experiments matched the preferred orientation of that recording site, defining the following three categories: 0-30, 30-60, and 60-90° from the horizontal orientation. Figure 7C shows the responses evoked by the collinear flankers at these three groups of recording sites in the absence of a target stimulus, normalized to the responses evoked by the horizontal ...

Static and dynamic models of spatial orientation | Research | Graybiel Laboratory | Brandeis University
Localization of the subjective vertical during body tilt in pitch and in roll has been extensively studied because of the relevance of these axes for aviation and control of posture. We performed the first measurement of static orientation in -90º to +90º pitch, roll and recumbent yaw using the same subjective orientation task in all axes.. Subjects tasks were to point a gravity-neutral probe to the gravitational vertical (haptically indicated vertical) and to report verbally their perceived tilt. Subjects underestimated their body tilts in recumbent yaw and pitch and overestimated their tilts in roll. The haptic settings for pitch and roll were consistent with data in the literature. Our data constitute the first tri-dimensional assessment of the subjective vertical using a common measurement procedure and provide the basis for the tri-axial modeling of vestibular function.. We have used this data set to develop a tri-axial model of spatial orientation. The model attempts to capture the ...

Identifying disease trajectories with predicate information from a knowledge graph
BACKGROUND: Knowledge graphs can represent the contents of biomedical literature and databases as subject-predicate-object triples, thereby enabling comprehensive analyses that identify e.g. relationships between diseases. Some diseases are often diagnosed in patients in specific temporal sequences, which are referred to as disease trajectories. Here, we determine whether a sequence of two diseases forms a trajectory by leveraging the predicate information from paths between (disease) proteins in a knowledge graph. Furthermore, we determine the added value of directional information of predicates for this task. To do so, we create four feature sets, based on two methods for representing indirect paths, and both with and without directional information of predicates (i.e., which protein is considered subject and which object). The added value of the directional information of predicates is quantified by comparing the classification performance of the feature sets that include or exclude it. ...

The current paper addresses the integrated perception of combined translational and rotational motion, as it occurs when moving along a curved trajectory. We questioned whether the perceived motion through the environment follows the predictions of a self-motion perception model (e.g., Merfeld et al. in J Vestib Res 3:141-161, 1993; Newman in A multisensory observer model for human spatial orientation perception, 2009), which assume linear addition of rotational and translational components. For curved motion in darkness, such models predict a non-veridical motion percept, consisting of an underestimation of the perceived rotation, a distortion of the ...

IEC 61850 - zxc.wiki
In contrast to the older standard IEC 60870-5-104 , which is based on a signal-oriented data model, IEC 61850 claims to offer an object-oriented data model. The object orientation must not be misunderstood with object orientation in the sense of object-oriented programming (OOP). The essential concepts of the OOP abstraction, data encapsulation, polymorphism and inheritance are not or only to a limited extent supported. In fact, the objects in IEC 61850 are defined tree-like structures from which a tree-like data model can be composed. The name or path of the respective tree element, which is transmitted in plain text, serves as identification in communication. Most implementations allow the query of the data model with special commands, which is also referred to as self-describing in this context. The standard covers the needs of station automation. This affects the communication structures as well as the object-related data model. In principle, however, the standard is generally ...

Everything about time - Monochronism - Polychronism - Orientation
Managing a project schedule seems like a straight-forward and explicit task. But when the concept of time is introduced, developing and managing a project schedule becomes greatly complicated, primarily because time is shaped by cultural influences. This paper examines how culture can affects a multicultural project teams orientation to time, and in turn, shape the teams project performance. In doing so, it defines two types of orientation to time--monochronism and polychronism, looking at each orientations cultural significance. It compares the advantages and disadvantages of each orientation, noting the key differences between mono-chronic people and poly-chronic people. It also discusses how project managers can develop approaches to work with these orientations to time, noting the values that shape each orientation. It then details eight lessons that the authors learned from working in cultures--and with individuals--that embraced different orientations to managing time and to building

N2 - Orientation tuning of neurons is one of the chief emergent characteristics of the primary visual cortex, VI. Neurons of the lateral geniculate nucleus, which comprise the thalamic input to V1, are not orientation-tuned, but the majority of V1 neurons are quite selective. How orientation tuning arises within VI is still controversial. To study this problem, we measured how the orientation tuning of neurons evolves with time 20 using a new method: reverse correlation in the orientation domain. Orientation tuning develops after a delay of 30-45 milliseconds and persists for 40-85 ms. Neurons in layers 4Cα or 4Cβ, which receive direct input from the thalamus, show a single orientation preference which remains unchanged throughout the response period. In contrast, the preferred orientations of output layer ...

ViewCube: A 3D Orientation Indicator and Controller
Literally hundreds of thousands of users of 2D computer-aided design (CAD) tools are in the difficult process of transitioning to 3D CAD tools. A common problem for these users is disorientation in the abstract virtual 3D environments that occur while developing new 3D scenes. To help address this problem, we present a novel in-scene 3D widget called the ViewCube as a 3D orientation indicator and controller. The ViewCube is a cubeshaped widget placed in a corner of the window. When acting as an orientation indicator, the ViewCube turns to reflect the current view direction as the user re-orients the scene using other tools. When used as an orientation controller, the ViewCube can be dragged, or the faces, edges, or corners can be clicked on, to easily orient the scene to the corresponding view. We conducted a formal experiment to measure the performance of the ViewCube comparing: (1) ArcBall-style dragging using the ViewCube for manual view switching, (2) clicking on face/edge/corner elements of ...

Orientation In Android | Steven Elliotts Website
Recently Ive been exploring the Android operating system. I was sufficiently curious to purchase an ADP1 (an android based developer phone from Google). I think Ive done enough research to begin porting my M12 puzzle. I thought Id share some of the things Ive learned along the way starting with the way orientation works.. Both the T-Mobile G1 and the ADP1 allow applications to be displayed with two different orientations - landscape and portrait. By default the the orientation is controlled by whether the keyboard is exposed. The application can override the default orientation behavior, but doing so requires an understanding of the way orientation works in Android.. Transitions between portrait and landscape mode result in a new instances of of the ...

Patent US6137905 - System for discriminating document orientation - Google Patents
Document image data entered from a scanner are separated into a plurality of areas by an area separation unit. Attributes are assigned to respective ones of the plurality of partial areas obtained in the area separation unit. For instance, a character area in the main body of text and a character area in a table are examples of area attributes. Each of these attributes is assigned a degree of priority in advance. A character recognition/orientation discrimination unit detects character orientation in each of the plurality of partial areas and discriminates document orientation. The orientation of the document image data is determined based upon the document orientation of each partial area discriminated by the character recognition/orientation discrimination unit and the degree of priority of the attribute assigned to each partial area. Further, first and second recognition units for recognizing characters used in the Japanese and English languages, respectively, are provided, and the image data undergo
Pinwheel crystallization in a dimension reduction model of visual cortical development | BMC Neuroscience | Full Text
Here we use a perturbative approach to compute the ground states of the EN for the joint mapping of two visual features: (i) position in visual space, represented in a retinotopic map and (ii) line orientation, represented in an orientation preference map (OPM). In this framework, the EN incooporates a mapping from a four-dimensional feature space to the twodimensional cortical sheet of neurons. We show that the dynamics of both feature representations can be treated within a general theory for the stability of OPMs [6]. We find various ground states as a function of the lateral intracortical interactions and external stimulus distribution properties. However, in all parameter regimes, the grounds states of the Elastic Network Model are either stripe-like, or crystalline representation of the two visual features. We present a complete phase diagram of the model, summarizing pattern selection. Analytical predictions are confirmed by direct numerical simulations. Our results question previous ...

A. pelagicus has demonstrated in a shipboard aquarium the ability to rotate its eyes and digestive gland to keep them in a vertical orientation. In the photographs below the black line passes through the axis of the gill and provides a reference point. One white lines pass through the axis of the digestive gland and the other through the eye-axis. The photographs show the gill-axis in two different orientations. The orientation of the digestive gland and eye axes (white lines) differ greatly in the two pictures relative to the orientation of the black line (gill axis). ...

Optimal orientation in flows: providing a benchmark for animal movement strategies | Journal of The Royal Society Interface
In this study, we have introduced optimal orientation as a benchmark for evaluating the performance of orientation strategies in given flow conditions. With optimal orientation, trajectories are longest yet travel duration is minimized by steering through regions of relatively high flow support. The illustrated trajectories (figures 1a,b and 2a,b) demonstrate that optimal orientation in horizontal flow does not always involve increased compensation on approach to the goal (cf. [12,13]), can involve either over-drift or over-compensation en route (cf. [23,38]) and is not always equivalent to full drift in balanced flows (contra [12]).. Our results provide insight into the value of information an animal may have about flow conditions. In flow that is weak compared to self-speeds (W ≤ 0.5), flow prediction is not essential as full compensation and goal orientation are all nearly as reliable and efficient as flow-adjusted vector orientation and optimal orientation (figures 1d, 2d and 3d). This ...
Situated embodied cognition: monitoring orientation cues affects product evaluation and choice
Consumers generally prefer products that are easy to interact with. In three studies, we show that this preference arises from the fit between product orientation and monitored situational constraints. Flexible right-handers, who monitor situational constraints, recall product orientations better and prefer products for which the handle is oriented in the direction of the hand used for grasping. When their ability to monitor situational constraints is impaired, the preference for easy-to-grasp products is attenuated. The findings highlight that motor fluency is a relevant cue for decision making when consumers assess how to interact with a product. The implications of these results for embodiment and fluency research are discussed ...

racketboy.com - View topic - Games Beaten 2018
Im pretty sure the translation for the phrase DonPachi means LoveHate. Okay I totally made that part up, but it perfectly describes my experience with this game. I loved the non-stop action and the thrilling amount of firepower unleashed when your weapons are fully charged. I loved the graphics and the high energy soundtrack. I fully appreciated the fact that the PSX port of the game allows for arcade accurate vertical orientation, even if I had to fool around with rather obscure ePSXe graphics plugins to make it work properly (here tate mode does indeed turn the screen 90 degrees with proper aspect ratio … but it turns it 90 degrees horizontal; youd have to turn your monitor on its side to make it into a proper vertical shooter - or alternately use a graphics plugin to facilitate the rotation as I did). But despite all these good qualities … I hated the way in which the game thoroughly kicked my ass over and over … and over again. The bottom line is that Im just not hardcore enough ...
Omniball® Spring-Loaded Contact | Mill-Max Mfg. Corp.
The Omniball® contact (0945-0-15-20-09-14-11-0) is a spring-loaded pin in which the traditional plunger has been replaced by a gold plated ball. It is designed to simplify and improve the connections made between components which are mated together in a sliding or rotational motion rather than in an axial or vertical orientation. When engaged, the ball compresses and rolls, allowing the mating surfaces to make contact and then easily slide parallel to each other while spring force acts to ensure consistent electrical contact is maintained. This rolling action alleviates the concerns of connector damage such as binding, premature wearing and structural failure that may occur when using traditional plunger style spring pins in these types of applications. ...

A right pelvic abnormal structure, which morphologically closely resembled that of a kidney, was found located above the uterus(Fig.2). The patient underwent CT to study the origin of this anomaly and to exclude primitive iliac conglomerate adenopathy(Fig.3). A renal malformation was detected, translated by ectopic renal fusion, manifested by the fusion of two kidneys, which showed a horizontal orientation at the right side of the midline below the iliac primitive territory, with expression in the pelvic cavity. No renal mass lesion or pelvicaliceal dilatation was found ...
A dynamic drawing algorithm for interactive painterly rendering
We present a new approach to create painterly renderings of an animated 3D scene, allowing a controllable trade-off between scene fidelity and stylistic design. Our approach extends and complements existing systems in order to ensure temporal coherence while maintaining consistent stroke density, and allowing a wide variety of stroke styles. It is based on a new dynamic painting algorithm which selects a suitable set of sample stroke locations based on an object-space hierarchy. Strokes are created at these locations, with attributes assigned using arbitrary stylistic choices: examples include scene-derived decisions such as having stroke orientation follow curvature or silhouette directions, or user-supplied constraints such as global orientation or thickness. Stroke rendering is then performed using appropriately filtered information from a set of G-buffers. We describe an improved stroke rendering technique which allows a faithful depiction of the scene while letting the user specify his prefered
The neuronal substrate of compass orientation | Department of Biology
Insects, with their miniature brains and eyes, are undoubtedly one of the most capable navigators in the animal kingdom. Dung beetles are known to use a large repertoire of sky compass cues as their only reference during straight-line orientation. But how are all these signals processed in the beetle brain to develop a precise internal sky compass? Moreover, how is this network designed in an animal that relies on a pure visual sky compass?
Selective mechanisms for simple contours revealed by compound adaptation | JOV | ARVO Journals
Neurons in the early stages of visual processing are often thought of as edge detectors for different orientations. Here we investigate the existence of detectors for specific combinations of edges-detectors for specific curvatures. Previous attempts to demonstrate such detectors through aftereffects have ultimately been explained by adaptation to local orientation rather than curvature per se. To control for local aftereffects, we adapted one patch of visual field to two adjacent gratings presented as an obtuse contour (compound patch), and another patch to the same component gratings presented alternately (component patch). In this way both patches are adapted equally to the local orientation components of the stimuli, but only the compound patch is adapted to the global contour. Thus any difference in adaptation between the patches must result from the presence of the contour as a global figure. We found that perceived contrast of probe stimuli was not differentially altered in the two ...

OSA | Laser-induced damage of KDP crystals by 1ω nanosecond pulses: influence of crystal orientation
We investigate the influence of THG-cut KDP crystal orientation on laser damage at 1064 nm under nanosecond pulses. Since laser damage is now assumed to initiate on precursor defects, this study makes a connection between these nanodefects (throughout a mesoscopic description) and the influence of their orientation on laser damage. Some investigations have already been carried out in various crystals and particularly for KDP, indicating propagation direction and polarization dependences. We performed experiments for two orthogonal positions of the crystal and results clearly indicate that KDP crystal laser damage depends on its orientation. We carried out further investigations on the effect of the polarization orientation, by rotating the crystal around the propagation axis. We then obtained the evolution of the damage probability as a function of the rotation angle. To account for these experimental results, we propose a laser damage model based on ellipsoid-shaped defects. This modeling is a ...
Object Oriented Orientation
OK, Monks, in fear of being hit with flying keyboards, I must tell you that I am currently in the process of learning Java, as my second language.**ducks** As most of you know, from several posts before on my behalf, Perl was in fact my very first language (well, as far as computers go, of course). However, even though Ive come quite far in Perl, I have yet to pursue Object Oriented Perl. Now that Im embarking on my new Java quest, its coming to my attention, that Java is, itself, object oriented.. So, my question is this...*finally, you say*...should I stop where I am, and come back to learn object orientation in Perl? Is it more a concept to learn, than something to do with a particular language (other than syntax, of course)? Am I leaving my Perl quest immaturely if Ive skipped object oriented Perl?. I suppose I hadnt really seen much point in venturing down that path, as Ive never really come to a problem where the answer to said problem had anything to do at all with OO Perl, but if ...

A class of peptides that associate with lipids, known as oblique-orientated peptides, was recently described [Brasseur R., Pillot, T., Lins, L., Vandekerckhove, J. & Rosseneu, M. (1997) Trends Biochem. Sci. 22, 167-171]. Due to an asymmetric distribution of hydrophobic residues along the axis of the alpha-helix, such peptides adopt an oblique orientation which can destabilise membranes or lipid cores. Variants of these oblique peptides, designed to have an homogeneous distribution of hydrophobic and hydrophilic residues along the helical axis, are classified as regular amphipathic peptides. These peptides are expected to lie parallel to the polar/apolar interface with their hydrophobic residues directed towards the apolar ...
