We evaluated the feasibility of interictal single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) to detect alterations in regional cerebral blood flow and neuronal activity in dogs with idiopathic epilepsy. Twelve dogs with idiopathic epilepsy underwent interictal technetium-99m-ethyl cysteinate dimer SPECT of the brain. Different cortical regions of interest (ROIs), 1 ROI at the cerebellum and 1 ROI at the subcortical area were evaluated by semiquantitative analysis and compared with a control group (18 dogs). Significant hypoperfusion (P=0.02) was present in the subcortical area of epileptic dogs. This hypoperfusion was not associated with seizure frequency, age at onset of seizures, duration of epilepsy, or time since the last seizure. Interictal SPECT did not reveal cortical or cerebellar perfusion alterations. The subcortical area may play an important role in the pathophysiology of canine idiopathic epilepsy. ...

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: In the general context of perfusion pattern modeling from single-photon emission computed tomographic (SPECT) data, the purpose of this study is to characterize interindividual functional variability and functional connectivity between anatomic structures in a set of SPECT data acquired from a homogeneous population of subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From volume of interest (VOI)-perfusion measurements performed on anatomically standardized SPECT data, we proposed to use correspondence analysis (CA) and hierarchical clustering (HC) to explore the structure of statistical dependencies among these measurements. The method was applied to study the perfusion pattern in two populations of subjects; namely, SPECT data from 27 healthy subjects and ictal SPECT data from 10 patients with mesio-temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE). RESULTS: For healthy subjects, anatomic structures showing statistically dependent perfusion patterns were classified into four groups; namely, temporomesial
18F-FDG, a marker of the enhanced metabolism characteristic of activated inflammatory cells, and 99mTc-annexin A5, a marker of apoptosis, are both widely believed to be useful for the imaging of unstable atheroma (rupture-prone vulnerable plaques [VP]). Serum cholesterol functions as a proinflammatory factor, driving the formation of VP, and affects the immune responses of aortic tissues systemically. It is therefore reasonable to postulate that prolonged cholesterol loading may alter the aortic uptake of these tracers. Here, we evaluated the aortic uptake of 18F-FDG and 99mTc-annexin A5 in apolipoprotein E-deficient (apoE2/2) and wild-type mice placed on high-fat diets. Methods: Male apoE2/2 and wild-type (C57BL/6J) mice were maintained on high-fat diets after the age of 5 wk. Wild-type mice fed regular chow were used as controls. At the ages of 10, 18, and 25 wk (5-15 mice per group at each time point), mice were injected with 18F-FDG or 99mTc-annexin A5 after 12 h of fasting. At 1 h after ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Technetium-labeled erythrocyte scintigraphy in acute gastrointestinal bleeding. AU - Tabibian, James H.. AU - Wong Kee Song, Louis M.. AU - Enders, Felicity B.. AU - Aguet, Jaime C.. AU - Tabibian, Neshan. PY - 2013/8/1. Y1 - 2013/8/1. N2 - Purpose: Optimal management of acute gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding requires accurate localization of the bleeding source. The role of technetium-labeled erythrocyte scintigraphy (tagged red blood cell (TRBC) scan) in evaluating acute GI bleeding has been controversial, though recent literature suggests that it is a reliable tool and may be used as a first-line diagnostic test. We evaluated our recent experience with and the clinical outcomes of the TRBC scan in patients presenting with acute GI bleeding. Methods: A retrospective study of 100 consecutive TRBC scans performed between April 2006 and January 2009 was conducted. Medical records of each corresponding patient were queried for pertinent data. Twenty TRBC scans performed for occult GI ...
A review. Many discrete cationic complexes have been designed and exhibited increasingly impressive catalytic performances for the ROP of epoxides and cyclic esters. The current state-of-the-art suggests that major breakthroughs cannot be foreseen in the homopolymn. of epoxides, due to the nature of the assocd. mechanisms, and as a consequence, interest in the use of metal cations to polymerize epoxides has dwindled. It seems to the authors that in view of the activated monomer mechanism that is often assocd. with discrete metal cations, this is clearly an area where the use of rationally devised cationic complexes could bring original breakthroughs.
Objective: Due to stable myocardial retention and technetium imaging characteristics, 99mTc-tetrofosmin has been considered potentially useful for acute chest pain imaging. Tetrofosmin also has favorable biokinetics with reported rapid liver clearance, 5 min poststress and 30-45 min postrest injection. Since comparable data are not available, the effect of time on liver clearance was evaluated in patients with acute chest pain.. Methods: One hundred six patients received an intravenous injection of 25-30 mCi 99mTc-tetrofosmin to evaluate acute chest pain. SPECT imaging was performed 15-120 min after injection of the tracer. Patient images were grouped according to the time of acquisition after acute injection: 15-30 min, 31-45 min, 46-60 min, 61-90 min and ,90 min. Quantitative analysis was performed on a similar anterior projection for each patient consisting of a 6 × 6-pixel region of interest over the myocardium and adjacent liver. Average counts per pixel were determined and a heart/liver ...

Brain perfusion SPECT is highly useful for the diagnosis of the dementias, including Alzheimers disease, Fronto-Temporal Dementia, and Lewy Body Disease. Studies of the accuracy of SPECT for diagnosing Alzheimers Disease report sensitivities of 65%-85% and specificities (for other dementias) of 72%-87% (1) In the largest study to date, both HMPAO SPECT and 18F-FDG PETwere able to completely separate 26 AD cases from controls (2) SPECT has been advocated over18F-FDG PET on the basis of its wider availability, lower cost, and perceived better patient tolerability, although a recent review suggested 18F-FDG PET had greater diagnostic accuracy over Brain Perfusion SPECT where available (3) Guidelines of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine and the American College of Radiology endorse the clinical use of Brain Perfusion SPECT in the workup and diagnosis of dementia (4,5).. Brain perfusion SPECT is useful because the clinical diagnosis of dementia is often inaccurate, especially in early ...
This is the first study to have determined the extent to which99mTc-HMPAO SPECT contributes to the clinical differentiation of dementing conditions. Moreover, it has provided information that is useful to the clinician in the interpretation of individual test results and a guide to the optimal clinical usage of CBF imaging in the diagnosis of dementia.. To facilitate the interpretation of individual patterns of CBF abnormality, it is suggested that table 3 is used as follows: if a demented patient is considered to have either Alzheimers disease or vascular dementia at initial presentation (table 3a) on the basis of neuropsychological evaluation, neurological examination, and CT, then bilateral posterior CBF abnormality or bilateral posterior plus unilateral anterior CBF abnormality provides support for the diagnosis of Alzheimers disease. By contrast, bilateral anterior CBF abnormality, bilateral anterior plus unilateral posterior CBF abnormality, or patchy CBF changes provide support for ...
19 patients were selected, from the patients screened, for investigation within 48 hours of the onset of an ischaemic cerebrovascular accident. Clinical neurulogical scoring, computerized tomography lCT) scans and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) scans were performed on day 1, day 10 and day 30. SPECT scan data was analysed by 5 semi-quantitative methods, and findings were compared with neuroloyical clinical scores on each respective day. It was found that day 1 SPECT scans are of value for early localization of the acute ischaemic infarction. A multiple regression model was developed using both the day 30 Defect Volume index and segmental analysis score which related to the day 30 clinical scores. The day 1 model was unsatisfactory and no such model was found relating day 10 SPECT semi-quantitative methods to day 10 clinical scoring. Changes in semi-quantitative scores from day 1 to day 30 did not correlate with clinical changes. Longer follow up may be required for there to ...
Non-invasive images of the myocardium that reflect myocardial perfusion can be obtained either by using conventional nuclear medicine radiopharmaceuticals and cameras or by positron emission tomography (PET). Myocardial perfusion scintigraphy (MPS) with thallium-201 and/or technetium (Tc)-99m-labelled sestamibi and tetrofosmin, in combination with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), is a robust and well validated technique for the identification of myocardial ischaemia and infarction with high sensitivity and specificity. 99mTc-labelled myocardial perfusion agents have a high-count density which enables acquisition of electrocardiogram-gated images. Spatial and temporal changes in activity during the cardiac cycle reflect regional myocardial motion and thickening and this technique

Introduction. Considerable doubt remains about whether the warm-up effect in angina represents ischaemic preconditioning (IPC), or is simply due to improved myocardial perfusion via acute recruitment of collaterals. We investigated the latter possibility using quantitative tetrofosmin SPECT. Methods. 11 patients (age 63±8 years, 8 male) with coronary disease and preserved left ventricular function underwent symptom-limited treadmill exercise off antianginal medication. On three separate days at weekly intervals, 99m Tc-tetrofosmin 400-450MBq was injected at rest, during a single exercise test (Ex1), and during the second of two exercise tests separated by 30 minutes (Ex2a and Ex2b). Exercise injections were given at equivalent heart rates. SPECT acquisitions were obtained 1-2 hours after each tetrofosmin injection. Quantitative analysis was performed by comparing polar plots derived from radial slices with a normal database. The hypoperfusion index was the product of

article{412594, abstract = {Impulsive aggression in dogs has an important impact on human public health. Better insight into the pathophysiology of this phenomenon could lead to more adequate diagnosis and treatment. Indirect in vivo research on peripheral body fluids and post-mortem studies in impulsive animals and humans indicate a deficient serotonergic system in general and disturbances in the serotonin-2A (5-HT2A) receptor in particular. In this study, brain perfusion and the 5-HT2A receptors were examined in impulsive, aggressive dogs, in comparison with a group of normally behaving animals. In order to decide which dogs to include in this study, owners were asked to describe the general behaviour of the dogs, the circumstances in which aggression occurred and their conduct during aggressive acts. Finally, 19 dogs were retained for this study, showing, according to different behavioural specialists, disinhibited dominance aggression. Functional imaging studies were performed on all these ...
