According to scientific recommendations, paratransgenesis is one of the solutions for improving the effectiveness of the Global Malaria Eradication Programme. In paratransgenesis, symbiont microorganisms are used for distorting or blocking the parasite life-cycle, affecting the fitness and longevity of vectors or reducing the vectorial competence. It has been revealed recently that bacteria could be used as potent tools for double stranded RNA production and delivery to insects. Moreover, findings showed that RNase III mutant bacteria are more competent for this aim. Asaia spp. have been introduced as potent paratransgenesis candidates for combating malaria and, based on their specific features for this goal, could be considered as effective dsRNA production and delivery tools to Anopheles spp. Therefore, we decided to characterize the rnc gene and its related protein to provide the basic required information for creating an RNase III mutant Asaia bacterium. Asaia bacteria were isolated from field
Serine/threonine Akt kinase is a key regulator of a wide range of cellular pathways including growth, proliferation, and survival. Accordingly, deregulation of Akt plays a key role in the onset or propagation of cancer. We found that dynAP is a novel modulator of Akt activation, warranting dynAP as a potential target for developing anticancer drugs. In addition, the involvement of Akt in the metabolic control (lipid and glucose) has been widely accepted, and recently, the importance of Akt has been implicated in the neuronal function (17, 18). Expression of dynAP therefore may profoundly affect other disease conditions such as diabetes mellitus and neurodegenerative diseases. The cellular content of dynAP seemed to be correlated with its mRNA level, and SV40 transformation provoked dynAP expression in the normal fibroblasts that did not express dynAP. These results may suggest that the expression of the dynAP gene is under the control of a tumor suppressor (Rb or p53) at the transcriptional ...

zag-1 activity establishes several neuronal characteristics, such as cell position, axonal structure and gene-expression profile. Although zag-1 mutations confer various defects on sensory, motor and interneurons, common or related phenotypes are evident. These include the absence of stereotypic axon branches and upregulation of neurotransmitter biosynthetic and reuptake genes. zag-1 functions less to define neuron identity per se and more to generate features characteristic of a particular type of neuron. The specificity and selectivity of zag-1 phenotypes for each neuron type suggests that zag-1 acts in combination with other cell-type-specific factors to control differentiation.. SRA-6 is a candidate chemosensory receptor, based on its predicted seven transmembrane domain topology and expression in amphid sensory neurons ASH and ASI (Troemel et al., 1995). sra-6::gfp provides an ideal indicator of PVQ development and differentiation, although sra-6 function in interneuron PVQ is unclear. ...

According to a recent video from Health Ranger on NaturalNews.com, GMO labeling is still not enforced in the US, and lobbyists continue to make strides in their efforts to conceal GMOs from consumers. This is a legitimate health hazard to Americans and those abroad who consume our agricultural exports., , , , While it might be difficult for everyday buyers to read labels and determine whether or not foods contain GMOs and other harmful ingredients, self-informing remains the most effective...
Thanks to Ron Epstein. Three facts you need to know about GMOs before you read the explosive test results below. Before you view the Cornucopias test results below, there are three important things you need to know about GMOs:. #1) There is GE contamination in almost everything. Even "non-GMO" food products almost always contain trace levels of GMOs (often between .01% and 0.5%). A test for the mere presence of GMOs is not considered conclusive. Whats important is thelevelof GMOs in a particular food item. Some of the "natural" items tested by the Cornucopia Institute showed GMO contamination levels between 28 and 100 %, which means the key ingredients in those cereals are most definitely genetically engineered from the source (and its not just a chance contamination from some other nearby field).. #2) All GMO tests are merely a "snapshot" that can change over time. Foods that test free of GMOs today may contain higher levels tomorrow due to supply line errors, contamination, supply source ...
Hello USA!!!. Im writing an urgent appeal to all who care about labeling GMOs in our great country.. "After years of feeling hopeless about the state of GMO labeling in this country, I had what Jeffrey calls "an epiphany." On the morning of January 20, 2011, it came to me in a flash of inspiration that it was my job from that day until November 6, 2012 to do everything I could to get a proposition to label GMOS on the ballot in California. I had no money, no experience and no hope. I just started.. "Since that day, we have grown beyond my wildest dreams. We have leaders all over the state working in their communities to educate and get out the vote. We have professionals on board to guide us. We have much in place to be successful AND we are entering the most difficult phase of this campaign.. "What happens here will affect the whole country. Seven states that I know of are watching us and are poised to do initiatives or legislative efforts once we win. Our opposition is firing up its weapons- ...
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or as they are alternatively called, genetically engineered organisms (GEOs) have raised quite a bit of concern over the past decade. But just what are these creatures that have caused so much alarm? In order to understand GMOs and their penchant to trigger alarm, we must first look at the base…
2011, 23:10. Abstract. Purpose: We reviewed 19 studies of mammals fed with commercialized genetically modified soybean and maize which represent, per trait and plant, more than 80% of all environmental genetically modified organisms (GMOs) cultivated on a large scale, after they were modified to tolerate or produce a pesticide. We have also obtained the raw data of 90-day-long rat tests following court actions or official requests. The data obtained include biochemical blood and urine parameters of mammals eating GMOs with numerous organ weights and histopathology findings.. Methods: We have thoroughly reviewed these tests from a statistical and a biological point of view. Some of these tests used controversial protocols which are discussed and statistically significant results that were considered as not being biologically meaningful by regulatory authorities, thus raising the question of their interpretations.. Results: Several convergent data appear to indicate liver and kidney problems as ...

Genetical Modification, although not a new technology anymore, is still a hot topic being discussed around the world. This phenomena is essentially caused by peoples ignorance on what GMOs really are. Since we can not tell what long term effects GMOs can bring to us, it is reasonable for people to debate its rationality to consume. In this article, I will state my opinion on the safety of GMOs, and give reasons why I have that idea. Keywords: GMOs, Safety, Food, Health. A research on Genetically Modified Organisms. People have tried to solve the problem of famine ever since our ancestors abandoned gathering and hunting lifes and embraced farming. There is also more food needed than we have. This situation still holds true even in 21st century. Human beings nowadays have a potential answer to this problem, which is raising Genetically Modified (GM) crops and animals. However, this approach have attracted so many opponents that many countries banned Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) ...
Another Dirty Secret of Monsanto In the EFSA report, which can be read online, you can find (within the scientific wording) that researchers discovered a previously unknown viral gene that is known as Gene VI. Whats concerning is that not only is the rogue gene found in the most prominent GMO crops and about 63% of GMO traits approved for use (54 out of 86 to be precise), but it can actually disrupt the very biological functions within living organisms. Popular GMO crops such as Roundup-Ready soybeans, NK603, and MON810 corn were found to contain the gene that induces physical mutations. NK603 maize, of course, was also recently linked to the development of mass tumors in rats. According to Independent Science News, Gene VI also inhibits RNA silencing. As you may know, RNA silencing has been pinpointed as vital for the proper functioning of gene expression when it comes to RNA. Perhaps more topically, it is a defense mechanism against viruses in plants and animals alike. On the contrary, many ...

by Mark Verdecia. The development of agriculture is arguably the most important milestone in our shared human history. Our ancestors transition from a nomadic life to an agrarian society was the first step, for better or for worse, towards the world we live in today. It is interesting to think that all the features of what we consider the modern world, everything from antibiotics to YouTube, were all made possible by the spontaneous and quite random appearance of a wild grass in the Levant region of the eastern Mediterranean. The current debate about whether to genetically manipulate our food is somewhat ironic given that it was a random series of genetic events that created cereal grain, today grown worldwide as wheat. In fact, it was this genetic accident that created the farmer and, indirectly us, in the first place, and not the other way around.[1]. How wheat became a plant capable of sustaining human settlements is a series of serendipitous events elegantly described by mathematician and ...

The scientists already knew that Bt toxin was very toxic and potentially deadly at levels above 270 milligrams per kilogram (basically ppm), so they instead tested levels ranging from 27mg/kg, 136mg/kg, and 270mg/kg for one to seven days (each of the Cry toxins were separated out and tested individually to maximize accuracy and total info). It was quite clear right off the bat that these Cry toxins were quite hemotoxic even at the lowest level of 27mg/kg administered only one time and one day as they clearly had damaged the blood, particularly in reference to red blood cells. The quantity and size of the erythrocytes (RBCs) were both significantly reduced, as was the overall levels of hemoglobin for which oxygen to attach to. All major factors regarding RBCs demonstrated some level of damage present for all levels of toxin administered and across all Cry proteins, although there were some clear variances present between different proteins and levels for certain factors. The white blood cell ...

By training, I am a plant biologist. In the early 1990s I was busy making genetically modified plants (often called GMOs for Genetically Modified Organisms) as part of the research that led to my PhD. Into these plants we were putting DNA from various foreign organisms, such as viruses and bacteria.. I was not, at the outset, concerned about the possible effects of GM plants on human health or the environment. One reason for this lack of concern was that I was still a very young scientist, feeling my way in the complex world of biology and of scientific research. Another reason was that we hardly imagined that GMOs like ours would be grown or eaten. So far as I was concerned, all GMOs were for research purposes only.. Gradually, however, it became clear that certain companies thought differently. Some of my older colleagues shared their skepticism with me that commercial interests were running far ahead of scientific knowledge. I listened carefully and I didnt disagree. Today, over twenty years ...

May 13, 2015. Washington, DC - Today, 328 farm, food, health, public interest and environmental organizations and businesses wrote to members of Congress to urge them to protect consumers right to know what they are eating and require mandatory labeling of genetically engineered (GMO) foods.. The letter urged members of Congress not to support H.R. 1599, a bill introduced by Rep. Pompeo (R-KS) that would block states from requiring labeling of foods containing GMOs, and instead support bills introduced by Rep. DeFazio (D-OR) and Sen. Boxer (D-CA) that would create a federal standard for GMO labeling.. Rep. Pompeos bill, referred to by labeling supporters as the Denying Americans the Right to Know (DARK) Act, would make voluntary labeling for genetically engineered foods the national standard and enshrine in federal law a failed policy that has kept consumers in the dark about what they are eating for two decades.. Most importantly, the DARK Act would preempt state efforts to require labeling ...

When I teach GMO we always start with taxonomy so that students understand the division of kingdoms(1) and the classification of species(2) within each kingdom. We then look specifically at insect classification (animalia kingdom) to enforce the concept of classification and introduce identification of characteristics (ie:hard/soft bodies, two wings). Hybridization is studied when we identify and classify plant characteristics within the plantae kingdom. I introduce GMO last, after a lab where we extract DNA from a strawberry. GMO can take a gene from a bacteria and put it in a plant. Students then understand that the engineering crosses genus and even kingdoms. DNA "jumps" across the classification chart in opposition to evolution and adaptation ...

What John proposes would be great if the agencies he refers to were staffed with people from the general public. They are not! They are staffed with many people who work for or lobby on behalf of those producing GMO crops. This makes the public question the purported safety of these new GMO crops since the people in government saying they are safe are the very same people who were lobbying the government to make the claim that they were safe.. We also need to remove the term Bio-technology as a catch all for what people oppose. NO ONE that I spoke to questions the use of Bio-Technology in agriculture, rather they object to HOW it is used. The GMO lobbying crowd would like consumers to understand that only GMOs use bio-technology. Nothing could be further from the truth.. Traditional breeding practices have benefited greatly from the use of Bio-Tech that does NOT involve GMOs. From Marker Assisted Selection to Genome mapping and beyond. These technologies are now used by almost all conventional ...
Nematodes and the corn grub. GMO corn. It no longer works to kill either. Resistant strains. And the bt in the corn, is not the natural bt bacteria, that is used on organic crops, the bacteria that spreads amongst the caterpillars, where they crawl away and die. The toxin in the corn, is simply the exploding bug gut toxins, and as I dont eat dying caterpillars, I dont see why I should have to eat caterpillar gut toxins, in my corn. That are there now, for absolutely no purpose? THAT IS WHY THE WORLD IS BURNING USA GMO CORN, before it infects real crops, as it has done in USA. IF gmo WAS SO GREAT, why dont they label it, wouldnt thousands flock to buy it, if it was so great? Now they spray even non GMO wheat with glyphosate before harvest, as any dying thing puts all its efforts into the next generation, the seed. the bt toxins in gmo corn (not NOT natural) bt is the natural bacteria, used in organic farming, it spreads amongst the caterpillars, then it turns into toxins in the guts, they crawl away and die. Ang, with all due respect, I have to take exception to your rather convoluted and I believe purposely disingenuous description. I have observed you advance this same semantic exercise in other comment threads and it still insults the intelligence. You are trying to invoke a disgust response by proposing that when consuming bt traited crops, you are actually consuming the same dna and proteins as if you picked up a dead caterpillar off the ground and ate it. Youve refined your description a little from the last time I observed you advance your theory. You are now saying that the natural bt itself does not produce the toxin, but that the natural bt is somehow processed in the gut of the larvae ...

The biological activity of transmission-blocking antibodies is typically assessed using an assay known as the membrane feeding assay (MFA). It is an in vitro method that involves mixing antibodies with cultured P. falciparum gametocytes and feeding them to mosquitoes through an artificial membrane followed by assessment of infection in the mosquitoes. We genetically modified Plasmodium berghei to express Pfs25 and demonstrated that the transgenic parasites (TrPfs25Pb) are susceptible to anti-Pfs25 antibodies during mosquito-stage development. The ...
Genetically modified bacterial symbionts of arthropod disease vectors are potential tools for the delivery of proteins that interfere with pathogen development in the vector and may serve as a powerful complementary approach to control disease transmission [2]. Furthermore, the use of bacterial symbionts expressing foreign proteins in disease-carrying arthropods has also an intriguing potential for studying insect-pathogen interactions. The advent of Nanobody® technology has offered new prospects for the development of new effector molecules applicable for the paratransgenesis approach. These single-domain antigen-binding fragments represent exquisite targeting tools because of their small size (13-15 kDa) and stability properties [17, 22]. Despite the interest for a paratransgenesis approach in tsetse flies to control transmission of African trypanosomiasis, little progress has been made on the identification and expression of trypanosome-interfering proteins in the tsetse fly bacterial ...
AFRICA. Algeria: Ban on the import, distribution, commercialization and utilization of. GE plant material, except for research purposes. Egypt: Declared not to import GE wheat.. The draft Organization of African Unity (OAU) model biosafety law requires. that all GMOs, whether classified as food, crops, pharmaceuticals, or. commodities, and products thereof must be approved before import, transit,. contained use, release, and market release can take place. Any GMOs or. products thereof must be labeled as such and there is a strict liability. regime in place. This model law will serve as a model for national. implementation in African countries.. ASIA. Sri Lanka: A ban on the import of all genetically modified foods, raw and. processed, went into effect on May 1, 2001. This includes GMOs and. products thereof. Thailand: Ban on field trials of GE crops, and the termination of ongoing. field trials of Monsanto s GE cotton and corn. Ban on all commercial. planting of GE crops. Thailand will be ...
NGOs are treacherous and they lie. While an NGO may take the right action with one hand, the other hand is reaching out and grabbing your liberty by allocating its vast resources to advance the UN agenda. For example, the IUCN, the center of all UN NGOs, claims on their website that they have a moratorium on further release of GMOs, which makes them seem like they are against GMOs. GMOs have already contaminated much of the world, so a moratorium on further release of GMOs is a feeble attempt to rid the world of GMOs and NGOs pretend they have no power when more regulations are created to advance the UN agenda.(3) Instead of taking serious action to combat GMOs, the IUCN allocates their resources toward promoting biodiversity, (the theft of private property by way of the Endangered Species Act) and global warming, which has been thoroughly discredited.(4) The WWF keeps a low profile on their website about GMOs, but the WWF does fully endorse GMOs.(5) Greenpeace is a UN accredited NGO, and like ...
Global genetically modified (GMO) food market is anticipated to showcase a tremendous CAGR of 3.2% during the forecast period i.e. 2016-2023. Additionally, growing number of population with hectic lifestyle and introduction of high nutrition food are believed to intensify the growth of genetically modified (GMO) food. Moreover, the global genetically modified (GMO) food market is projected to account for 130 Million tons by the end of 2021. In terms of geography, North America region captured the largest market of global genetically modified (GMO) food in 2014 aided by U.S. Moreover, rapid urbanization along with growing awareness regarding genetically modified (GMO) food products in this region is predicted to trigger the market of genetically modified (GMO) food. Moreover, in the U.S, 86% of corn, 93% of soybean and 90% of cotton are genetically engineered. Apart from this, Europe imports approximately 60 GM products from other countries, especially maize, soy bean, cotton and sugar beet. In ...

In November, California voters will decide on a law that requires mandatory labeling of food products made with genetically modified ingredients, or GMOs (the O is for "organism"). It has been framed by its supporters as a right-to-know issue, playing Organic David to GMOs Goliath. To its detractors, its nothing more than a campaign of fear mongering brought on by the organic industry in league with a cadre of alternative medicine crackpots.. One of the biggest misconceptions about GMOs is that its seen as a total solution. Its not a solution, its a tool. Sometimes GMOs are warranted, other times not. A farmer should be free to go GMO-if its use is warranted-without fear of being regulated out of the marketplace.. I would argue that the California labeling law will result in an effective ban on GMOs, taking away that choice from farmers. The negative press, based on nonsense that is written about GMOs, is too overwhelming, making the average consumer fearful of GMOs-if they are labeled as ...
Widespread industry claims that the altered traits of genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) do not persist in food and are thus harmless to humans have once again been proven to be false. A new study published in the open-access, peer-reviewed Journal of Hematology & Thromboembolic Diseases has revealed that GMOs indeed damage and toxify human blood cells, and can consequently lead to the development of deadly blood diseases like anemia and leukemia.. Researchers from the Department of Genetics and Morphology and the Institute of Biological Sciences at the University of Brasilia learned this after feeding test mice various doses of Cry proteins, or Cry toxins, which are insect-killing agents purposely engineered into many GM crops. After administering just one dose of these toxins, the team observed the development of a number of different blood abnormalities, many of which became progressively worse in the week following the single dose.. Even at the lowest dose tested, Cry toxins were observed ...
Its official: the "mandatory" GMO labeling rule will obscure more than it makes transparent. Action Alert!. The USDA has released its final GMO labeling rule, and its not good. As we feared when the agency released its proposal earlier this year, the so-called GMO labeling law will apply only to a narrow set of foods. Congress and the USDA have offered a number of loopholes and exemptions to food companies, undermining any semblance of a consumers right to know. Its as if the USDA asked the food industry to write the rule themselves.. The problems start right at the foundation. The agency has decided to use the term "bioengineered"-a term many Americans may not be familiar with-rather than GMO. When the proposal was released, we pointed out that this is straight out of an Orwellian playbook. Many Americans know the term "GMO" and can connect it to the labeling debate-so the government decides to use a different term that sounds more innocuous. If the government was actually concerned with ...
But Powell added, "We also know we have different consumers who prefer to buy organic products, or for their reasons prefer to buy products that do not contain GMOs. … We are very strong advocates for a federally mandated (labeling) solution that would define the regulation around a Does Not Contain GMOs label.". That stance seemed to leave advocates unhappy on both sides.. Justin Danhof, general counsel for the National Center for Public Policy Research, a conservative policy group, told the audience, "By publicly removing GM ingredients from Cheerios, the company did not assuage the agitators, and they are here again today, demanding more.". Crosby didnt seem much like an agitator. But she would like General Mills to do more, citing a belief that GMO crops fuel a greater use of pesticides and are destructive to natural soils and natural systems.. "I think General Mills is a great company," Crosby said afterward. "Were just trying to nudge them to do the right thing.". On a different ...
Americas largest bio-agriculture company and the biggest retailer in the country are joining forces. Walmart will soon be stocking their shelves with GMO corn made by Monsanto.. The retail giant says they wont advertise which of their products are made with genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, which could become a big problem very soon. Zack Kaldveer explains in an editorial published by the California Progress Report this month that Walmart will soon sell a special factory-made corn manufactured by Monsanto, which while it will allow most of Americans more easy access to affordable food, will also fill them with unknown insecticides: the very GMO crop Walmart will be selling has been genetically engineered to include chemicals right inside the corn.. Voters in California will decide later this year if retailers on the West Coast will be legally bound to correctly label all foodstuffs sold in shopping centers that are made from genetically modified foods. Monsanto, one of the biggest ...
Modern humans live in a world where technological advantages have mostly made life better. It is now possible to travel across the country in a matter of hours or receive an organ transplant, things that would have been unheard-of less than a hundred years ago. However, not all technology is so benign and one area of concern is genetically modified organisms - crops and plants whose very DNA has been altered for the purposes of achieving disease resistance, increased nutritional value or a longer shelf life. The debate over this continues and below are reasons that everyone should consider before exposing themselves to GMO food.. Lack of Long-Term Study. One thing that many GMO critics point to as an area of concern is that there have been no long-term studies or independent verifications of the safety of genetically altered food. Very few people would, for instance, take a medication that had not been studied and deemed safe by the FDA or some similar body. Yet that is what is happening when ...
