The decision produced two lawsuits from neighbors - one asserting that the school board acted without transparancy to lease the property to the county, and the other opposed to soccer fields. The results of the descriptive statistics showed that majority of the farmers were engaged in C-L-HA farming system (52.5 percent) which was followed by C-L-P and C-P-HA farming systems (32.0 and 15.5 percent, respectively). Profitability analysis reveals that crop, livestock and poultry were found profitable under C-L-P farming system, where homestead and agroforestry was found profitable under C-L-HA farming system. Key informant interviews, focus group discussions, and direct observations of date palm plantations have been also conducted. About 94.19% of household heads allocated less than one hectare of land for date palm production and had 21–40 years (77.8%) of experience. Over the course of the past two decades, giant ragweed (Ambrosia trifida L.) has become an important weed of arable lands in many parts of the United States and Canada. Its shift from a primarily ruderal weed to one commonly found in row crop production has coincided with advancements in maize and soybean production practices and the associated fluctuations in the area seeded to each of these major crops. A field trial was conducted over three years to explore how cropping systems practices representative of distinct eras of maize and soybean production (i.e., the 1950s, 1980s and 2000s) influenced giant ragweeds ability to grow, develop and successfully reproduce within a crop field. Abstract: In this work we test graphene electrodes in nano-metric channel n-type Organic Field EffectTransistors (OFETs) based on thermally evaporated thin films of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimide derivative (PDIF-CN2). By a thorough comparison with short channel transistors made with reference gold electrodes, we found that the output characteristics of the graphene-based devices respond linearly to the applied biases, in contrast with the supra-linear trend of gold-based transistors. Moreover, short channel effects are considerably suppressed in graphene electrodes devices. More specifically, current on/off ratios independent of the channel length (L) and enhanced response for high longitudinal biases are demonstrated for L down to ~140 nm. Plants have a diverse internal microbial biota that has been shown to have an important influence on a range of plant health attributes. Although these endophytes have been found to be widely occurring, few studies have correlated agricultural production practices with endophyte community structure and function. One agricultural system that focuses on preserving and enhancing soil microbial abundance and biodiversity is organic farming, and numerous studies have shown that organically managed system have increased microbial community characteristics. Herein, the diversity and specificity of culturable bacterial endophytes were evaluated in four vegetable crops: corn, tomato, melon and pepper grown under organic or conventional practices. Endophytic bacteria were isolated from surface-sterilized shoot, root and seed tissues and sequence identified. In organic farming the control of perennial weed species, in particular Cirsium arvense, can be a major concern for farmers, especially if there is no regulation through perennial forage production. To test whether the stubble cleaner (SC), an enhanced skim plow (PL), is as effective in the control of C. arvense and other weeds as conventional ploughing and perennial forage production, an organic field experiment was established. Three different tillage/crop rotation systems were compared: an SC system and a PL system, both in a cereal-based crop rotation and an additional PL system in a crop rotation that included a perennial alfalfa-grass mixture (PLALF). Process standards define organic products by the method and means of production. Product standards define organic by the physical quality of the end product. The National Organic Program (NOP) uses process standards as the basis for defining organic. However, the situation is complicated by agricultural production practices, which sometimes result in the migration of NOP prohibited substances from conventional to organic fields. When this interaction alters the value of the product or the costs of production, a production externality is said to exist. Defining organic using process, rather than product standards, influences the burden and character of production externalities. Tillage system and crop rotation have long-term effects on soil productivity and soil quality components such as soil carbon and other soil physical, biological, and chemical properties. In addition, both tillage and crop rotation have effects on weed and soil disease control. There is a need for well-defined, long-term tillage and crop rotation studies across the different soils and climate conditions in the state. The objective of this study was to evaluate the long term effects of different tillage systems and crop rotations on soil productivity.
A replicated, controlled study in summer 1989-1990 in eight sites on one arable farm near Bonn, Germany (Henze & Şengonca 1993) found that a 50% reduction in pesticide application could control an aphid (Aphidoidea) outbreak as efficiently as the normal application. In farming systems with no insecticide use at all, natural predators reduced aphid populations to the same low levels (,5 aphids/plant), but the population decline occurred one week later than in the systems with pesticide use. Predatory arthropod populations also declined after pesticide treatment. Predator levels remained rather low in the normal pesticide system, however in the 50% reduced pesticide system they recovered in three weeks after pesticide application. Most varieties of greens do not grow throughout the market season in the Midwest because of the 85-degree-plus weather, which persists for much of July, August and September. High temperatures (and resulting problems with dormancy and rapid drying of soil) result in poor crop establishment, and bitterness and bolting of lettuce. Other leafy greens are severely affected by high insect populations. The ability to extend the greens season through the summer heat would benefit local growers while meeting a consumer need at peak market times.
