As with most terrestrial orchids, the rhizome is short and robust, growing in the uppermost soil layer. The rhizome grows annually with a growth bud at one end and dies off at the other end. The stem grows from the bud at the tip of the rhizome. Most slipper orchids have an elongate erect stem, with leaves growing along its length. But the mocassin flower or pink ladys slipper (Cypripedium acaule) has a short underground stem with leaves springing from the soil. The often hairy leaves can vary from ovate to elliptic or lanceolate, folded (plicate) along their length. The stems lack pseudobulbs.. The inflorescence is racemose. It can carry one to twelve flowers, as in Cypripedium californicum. But most species have one to three flowers. There are three sepals, with, in most species, the two lateral ones more or less fused. The flower has three acute petals with the third a striking slipper-shaped lip, which is lowermost. The sepals and the petals are usually similarly colored, with the lip in a ...
This is a protocol to produce stable silencing efficacy and efficiency for VIGS using CymMV as a silencing vector for floral functional genomics in Phalaenopsis orchids. This protocol is established based on a method created by Lu et al. (2007), and then modified by Hsieh et al. (2013a; 2013b), Lu et al. (2012) successfully engineered a cloning vector (pCymMV-Gateway) in that the target gene fragment is simple to insert and can be manipulated with high efficiency. The silencing vector is inoculated into plants by Agro-inoculation by using Agrobacterium tumefaciens (A. tumefaciens) strain EHA105. Agro-infiltration of leaves for use in VIGS study of orchid flowers is a time saver and produces less damage to flower buds.

Do Phalaenopsis orchids like to be root bound? Although orchids enjoy being root-bound, theyll need to be repotted when the potting mix has broken down,
Oncidium spp. produce commercially important orchid cut flowers. However, they are amenable to intergeneric and inter-specific crossing making phylogenetic identification very difficult. Molecular markers derived from the chloroplast genome can provide useful tools for phylogenetic resolution. The complete chloroplast genome of the economically important Oncidium variety Onc. Gower Ramsey (Accession no. GQ324949) was determined using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Sanger based ABI sequencing. The length of the Oncidium chloroplast genome is 146,484 bp. Genome structure, gene order and orientation are similar to Phalaenopsis, but differ from typical Poaceae, other monocots for which there are several published chloroplast (cp) genome. The Onc. Gower Ramsey chloroplast-encoded NADH dehydrogenase (ndh) genes, except ndhE, lack apparent functions. Deletion and other types of mutations were also found in the ndh genes of 15 other economically important Oncidiinae varieties, except ndhE in some species

Orchis is a genus in the orchid family (Orchidaceae), occurring mainly in Europe and Northwest Africa, and ranging as far as Tibet, Mongolia, and Xinjiang. The name is from the Ancient Greek ὄρχις orchis, meaning testicle, from the appearance of the paired subterranean tuberoids. These terrestrial orchids have root tubers instead of pseudobulbs. They are extremely diverse in appearance. They produce an erect stem. The inflorescence is a cylindrical to globular spike, 5-15 cm (2-6 in) long, with yellow, red to purple flowers. They start flowering at the base, slowly progressing upwards, except for the Monkey orchid (Orchis simia), which flowers in reverse order. The original genus Orchis used to contain more than 1,300 names. Since it was polyphyletic, it has been divided by Pridgeon et al., into several new genera (see Reference): Ponerorchis, Schizodium, Steveniella. As of June 2014[update], the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families accepts 21 species, along with a number of ...
Unlike many orchids, award-winning Bletilla striata is an easy-to-care-for hardy terrestrial orchid. It produces small, cattleya-like, pinkish-purple flowers, 2 in. wide (5 cm), in pretty racemes of up to 12 blooms. Rising artfully above the foliage, each exotic-looking flower has five spreading petals with an undulating, furrowed lower lip. Blooming for about 4-6 weeks in mid to late spring, the flowers open from the bottom of the raceme and progress to the top. Each pseudobulb produces 3-5 upright, pleated, sword-shaped, pale green leaves which add interest and distinction to the landscape from early spring until the frost cuts them down. Green seedheads follow the blooms, but gradually turn brown as they mature. As attractive in pots and containers as it is in beds and borders.
Winter may be coming to a close but that doesnt mean that feet are free from being cold. Sure, socks or slippers may help a little, or you can even turn up the heat in your home but none of those options are as fun or as dangerous as [Colin Furzes] solution. He has come up with some crazy DIY heated slippers.. Sure, theres battery powered heated slippers or even ones you can microwave to heat up but those are wicked boring. These puppies are actually gas powered and more resemble a small portable camping stove than any sort of footwear. Under each slipper is a custom-made burning chamber inside which is a small burner. Each slipper is supplied a constant flow of fuel from its own on-board gas can. Warming your feet couldnt be easier, just turn on the gas and light the burner with a match.. It goes without saying but we should reiterate… Dont try this at home! What you can try is watching the video of these slippers after the break.. [Colin Furze] is not new to having his projects on ...

Paphiopedilum (throughout Asia).. All of these genera have the characteristic pouch or ladies slipper and a column structure that differs from that of all other orchids. Generally, only two of the above genera are commonly cultivated in Victoria. They are the Phragmipedium, which we see fairly frequently, and of course the Paphiopedilum. The first paphiopedilum (or cypripedium, as they were then known) introduced into English glasshouses (in 1819) was Paphiopedilum venustum. Many new species were introduced to cultivation in the famous plant-hunting times later in the 1800s and the first hybrid, Paphiopedilum Harrisianum, was introduced in 1869.. Many, many thousands of hybrids have been made since then and it is possible to have tremendous floral diversity in a collection of paphiopedilums, with flowers throughout the whole year. Each group has slightly different cultural requirements and some of these will be discussed at the conclusion of this article.. Culture: An observant grower might ...

Ophrys iricolor and O. mesaritica are a pair of morphologically similar, closely related sexually deceptive orchids from the eastern Mediterranean. Ophrys iricolor is known to be pollinated by Andrena morio males and the specific pollinator of Ophrys mesaritica is determined as Andrena nigroaenea. Amplified fragment length polymorphism revealed O. iricolor and O. mesaritica to be genetically intermixed on the whole, although populations of O. iricolor and O. mesaritica in geographical proximity are strongly differentiated, suggesting that specific pollinators locally differentiate these taxa. Based on the available biological data and the system of pollinator attraction operative in Ophrys, we hypothesize that O. mesaritica may have arisen from O. iricolor by pollinator shift and that this is more probable than scenarios invoking hybridization as a result of mispollination by rare, non-specific flower visitors or specifically attracted insects. ...

By Terry Dunford. A majority of orchids are rewarding indoor plants. Once you have bought your first orchid or have received one as a gift, there are steps to take in order to maintain persistent flowering. Orchids are much stronger and resilient than a majority of people believe, and are, commonly, tremendously adaptable. There is an ancient legend that orchids are intricate and complex, and not practical to grow, particularly lacking a greenhouse. There are over 20,000 species of orchids and over 100,000 hybrids that are grown today. There are particular orchid species that conform better to the lighting and conditions of the average home. This article will explain General Orchid Care tips so you too can grow and enjoy your own orchids at home.. The first thing to remember is that orchids are not like any other houseplants. Orchids do not get rooted into the ground, so always avoid potting orchids in soil. Orchids in the wild usually entwine their roots around trees and branches. Orchids have ...
Phalaenopsis orchid is an important potted flower with high economic value around the world. We report the 3.1 Gb draft genome assembly of an important winter flowering Phalaenopsis KHM190 cultivar. We generated 89.5 Gb RNA-seq and 113 million sRNA-seq reads to use these data to identify 41,153 protein-coding genes and 188 miRNA families. We also generated a draft genome for Phalaenopsis pulcherrima B8802, a summer flowering species, via resequencing. Comparison of genome data between the two Phalaenopsis cultivars allowed the identification of 691,532 single-nucleotide polymorphisms. In this study, we reveal the key role of PhAGL6b in the regulation of flower organ development involves alternative splicing. We also show gibberellin pathways that regulate the expression of genes control flowering time during the stage in reproductive phase change induced by cool temperature. Our work should contribute a valuable resource for the flowering control, flower architecture development, and breeding of the
In vitro cultures of three orchid species, namely, Paphiopedilum niveum, Taeniophyllum obtusum and Yanda hookeriana, were initiated from different parts of the plants. Proliferous protocorm-like bodies were obtained from shoot tips and axillary buds of V. hookeriana and shoot tips and in florescence of T. obtusum. Shoot tips and axillary buds of P. niveum grew into single or multiple plantlets. In florescence culture of T. obtusum developed into multiple branches of in florescences, calli or produced roots. Young leaf tip or leaf base of P. niveum and root of T. obtusum were unable to differentiate into callus. However, culture of young flower bud of P. niveum produced leaf after seven months. High pH of the medium was suitable for T. obtusum cultures. Low concentration of modified Knudsons C medium was preferable to the standard concentration for the culture of P. niveum. ...

The importance of the glass slipper suggests that true love may require more than a prince, for he wanted to find the maiden who would fit the glass slipper, and none else. The glass slipper was the essential test for recognizing her and for eliminating other enthusiastic imposters. What could this teach us, on a deeper level? Perhaps, it suggests that we think a little differently about the word true in true love-that, it refers not about the other, but about ourselves. So often, we believe that if the circumstances and the person were perfect, true love would occur. But if that were the case, the story of Cinderella would have ended at the perfectly wonderful ball. It would not make sense for her to abandon the prince, or lose her slipper. She would have married the prince after that dance and lived happily ever after. No, true love is harder to obtain than that. True love begins when we have the courage to remain authentic to who we truly are. ...

Paphiopedilum exul (Ridl.) Rolfe is one of terrestrial or lithophytic orchids also known as the ladys slipper orchid. The distribution is native around limestone mountain at western and eastern coasts of Thailand. The suitable conditions for P. exul seed germination were constructed. Seeds from 5-month-old fruits cultured on half-strength Murashige and Skoog agar medium (½ MS) at different pH levels (5, 5.6, 6.2, and 6.8) and supplemented with 10, 20, and 30 g L-1 sucrose. Seeds were cultured in dark conditions for 2 months and then cultured at 25±3°C under light intensity of 37 µmol m-1 s-1 for 16 h d-1 for 1 month. The results showed that different pH levels affected seed development to germination. The pH 5, 5.6, 6.2, and 6.8 gave seed germination of 28.07, 26.33, 21.75 and 19.12%, respectively. Sucrose concentrations did not affect seed germination significantly, but 20 g L-1 sucrose tended to give high seed germination at 24.97%. There is no interaction between sucrose and pH on ...

Abstract. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences alignment and proteomic difference of Anoectochilus interspecies have been studied by means of ITS molecular identification and surface enhanced laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrography. Results showed that variety certification on Anoectochilus by ITS sequences can not determine species, and there is proteomic difference among Anoectochilus interspecies. Moreover, proteomic finger printings of five Anoectochilus species have been established for identifying species, and genetic relationships of five species within Anoectochilus have been deduced according to proteomic differences among five species.. Cypripedium calceolus parviflorum is a PERENNIAL growing to 0.6 m (2ft) by 0.3 m (1ft in). It is hardy to zone (UK) 5. It is in flower from May to August. The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and is pollinated by Insects. Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers moist soil.
The flowers are gorgeous, a really vibrant pink on a flower that is clearly an orchid. Less than half the price of my failed Cypripedium reginae which was eaten by a squirrel. (Weve since gotten new Cypripedium reginae plants at work which are a larger size than last year (in bud actually) and cheaper, but I wont try it again for a few more years ...
The minute and light seeds of orchids are scattered around by the wind in all directions. This way the seeds do not always fall into suitable areas and many of them are not able to germinate, this does not cause problems since thousands of seeds are produced. However this does not mean that individual orchid species are spread over large areas. The specific relationship between orchids and fungi & pollinators greatly limits the occurence of orchids to places were these fungi & the right pollinator will be found.. The population size of orchid species vary greatly, from extensive colonies of 30-50 plants to a few scattered individuals. A species is called rare when only a few plants are known from a small number of localities. With the specific environmental conditions that orchids require, they can easily become endangered or extinct. 72 orchid species are listed in the Red data plant list, 9 of these occur in the Vumba (Mapaura & Timberlake, 2002).. A large percentage of orchid species are ...
July 23, 1869.. I have now seen Orchis morio fertilized by various kinds of bees, ...

The relationship between mycorrhizal fungi and orchids including Cypripedium, Paphiopedilum and Dendrobium were studied. The phylogenetic analysis revealed for the first time that mycorrhizal fungi in Paphiopedilum were members of the fungal family Tulasnellaceae, just the same as that in Cypripedium, having strong specificity. Different species of Cypripedium or Paphiopedium with similar habitats might have some identical mycorrhizal fungi, but the dominant mycorrhizal fungi for each orchid species were not the same. The dominant fungi are determined by the species and habitats ...
Remember that orchids are actually wild plants from the jungles where light and weather conditions are very different from urban settings. Orchids are neither parasitic nor carnivorous. They need a continuous supply of fresh air, diffused light and some water. The temperature is best around 28 to 30 degrees Celsius.. We tend to believe that orchids dwell on trees but there are also many terrestrial orchids such as cymbidiums and cypripediums that grow naturally on the forest ground, while some actually thrive on bare rock crevices. I know some locals and foreigners who seek out new mother plants in our jungles. Trees in the jungle provide good growing conditions of fresh air, sunlight and even protection from being eaten by animals when the orchids grow above ground level.. It was not until hobbyists grew orchids artificially in temperate countries in the 19th century that skills and botanical knowledge grew of the correct conditions to keep plants successfully. Many would keep the secret ...

One orchid genus, Vanilla, is commercially important, used as a flavouring.. The underground tubers of terrestrial orchids (mainly Orchis mascula (Early Purple Orchid)) are ground to a powder and used for cooking, such as in the hot beverage salep or in the Turkish ice-cream (Dondurma - salepli dondurma). It has been claimed that the name salep comes from the Arabic expression ḥasyu al-tha`lab fox testicles, however, it appears more likely that the Turkish name salep comes directly from the Arabic name saḥlab‎. The similarity in appearance to testes naturally accounts for salep being considered an aphrodisiac.. The dried leaves of Jumellea fragrans are used to flavour rum on Reunion Island.. The scent of orchids is frequently analysed by perfumists (using Gas-liquid chromatography) to identify potential fragrance chemicals.. The other important use of orchids is their cultivation for the enjoyment of the flowers. Most cultivated orchids are tropical or subtropical, but quite a few which ...
Symbioses: Plant, Animal, and Microbe Interactions. McCormick, Meghan [1]. Germination of Cypripedium parviflorum, (Orchidaceae) Seeds Using Crude Soil Inoculm.. Cypripedium parviflorum is a species of temperate terrestrial orchid having a widespread distribution in the United States; however, it is listed by the USDA Forest Service Rocky Mountain Region as a sensitive plant species. C. parviflorum, seeds lack nutrient reserves and require fungal symbionts to germinate. The effect of soil on C. parviflorum germination rates from 10 sites was studied. I tested the hypothesis that germination rates of C. parviflorum will respond to the presence or absence of particular fungal symbiont species in the different soils. Sites ranged in quality from known orchid sites to proposed orchid hostile habitats. Seeds were exposed to crude soil inoculm using one of three seed baiting techniques: 1) Petri plates containing cellulose agar, 2) Petri plates containing a simplified soil microcosm, and 3) ex-situ ...
Oncidium is an important ornamental plant but the study of its functional genomics is difficult. Erycina pusilla is a fast-growing Oncidiinae species. Several characteristics including low chromosome number, small genome size, short growth period, and its ability to complete its life cycle in vitro make E. pusilla a good model candidate and parent for hybridization for orchids. Although genetic information remains limited, systematic molecular analysis of its chloroplast genome might provide useful genetic information. By combining bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) clones and next-generation sequencing (NGS), the chloroplast (cp) genome of E. pusilla was sequenced accurately, efficiently and economically. The cp genome of E. pusilla shares 89 and 84% similarity with Oncidium Gower Ramsey and Phalanopsis aphrodite, respectively. Comparing these 3 cp genomes, 5 regions have been identified as showing diversity. Using PCR analysis of 19 species belonging to the Epidendroideae subfamily, a conserved

Orchidaceae is the second largest family of flowering plants, which is highly valued for its ornamental purposes and medicinal uses. Dendrobium officinale is a special orchid species that can grow without seed vernalization. Because the whole-genome sequence of D. officinale is publicly available, this species is poised to become a convenient research model for the evolutionary, developmental, and genetic studies of Orchidaceae. Despite these advantages, the methods of genetic manipulation are poorly developed in D. officinale. In this study, based on the previously developed Agrobacterium-mediated gene transformation system, we identified several highly efficient promoters for exogenous gene expression and successfully applied the CRISPR/Cas9 system for editing endogenous genes in the genome of D. officinale. These two basic techniques contribute to the genetic manipulation toolbox of Orchidaceae. The pCambia-1301-35SN vector containing the CaMV 35S promoter and the β-glucuronidase (GUS) and

Efficient seed dispersal in flowering plants is enabled by the development of fruits, which can be either dehiscent or indehiscent. Dehiscent fruits open at maturity to shatter the seeds, while indehiscent fruits do not open and the seeds are dispersed in various ways. The diversity in fruit morphology and seed shattering mechanisms is enormous within the flowering plants. How these different fruit types develop and which molecular networks are driving fruit diversification is still largely unknown, despite progress in eudicot model species. The orchid family, known for its astonishing floral diversity, displays a huge variation in fruit dehiscence types, which have been poorly investigated. We undertook a combined approach to understand fruit morphology and dehiscence in different orchid species to get more insight into the molecular network that underlies orchid fruit development. We describe fruit development in detail for the epiphytic orchid species Erycina pusilla and compare it to two terrestrial

Cymbidium is a genus of 68 species in the orchid family, with extremely high ornamental value. Marker-assisted selection has proven to be an effective strategy in accelerating plant breeding for many plant species. Analysis of cymbidiums genetic background by molecular markers can be of great value in assisting parental selection and breeding strategy design, however, in plants such as cymbidiums limited genomic resources exist. In order to obtain efficient markers, we deep sequenced the C. ensifolium transcriptome to identify simple sequence repeats derived from gene regions (genic-SSR). The 7,936 genic-SSR markers were identified. A total of 80 genic-SSRs were selected, and primers were designed according to their flanking sequences. Of the 80 genic-SSR primer sets, 62 were amplified in C. ensifolium successfully, and 55 showed polymorphism when cross-tested among 9 Cymbidium species comprising 59 accessions. Unigenes containing the 62 genic-SSRs were searched against Non-redundant (Nr), Gene Ontology
Orchid Flower Color Meaning and Symbolism. In fact, the black orchid is among the rarest orchid that stores absolute power and authority symbolism. Being a flower with a strong scent, the symbolism of the orchid is usually attributed to the sweet aroma that it releases into the air. Gardening simply does not allow one to be mentally old, because too many hopes and dreams are yet to be realized. -Allan Armitage, 1. They symbolize wealth, royalty, and admiration. The red orchids flower symbolizes love and desire, as well as admiration and aggression. Whatever the occasion may be at a hand - a Birthday, Mothers Day, anniversary a thank you message, graduation, or a host of other special occasions - a flower can be the perfect medium to convey our sentiments and emotions. The flower has a long history as a symbol of elite class groups due to its formality and classy quality. To grow, the flower requires a symbiotic relationship with fungi that make the main reason of this plant highly adaptive to ...
1. While rarely tested, the rarity of a species may be linked to the rarity of symbiotic partners. The requirement of many terrestrial plants to form a symbiosis with mycorrhizal fungi may limit the distribution and abundance of plant species. Here, in just the second test of the role of mycorrhiza in host species rarity, we investigate the influence of mycorrhizal specificity, distribution and ecological requirements in the genus Drakaea (Orchidaceae).. 2. In situ seed baiting was used to resolve the distribution of mycorrhizal fungi for three common and two co-occurring rare species of Drakaea. Mycorrhizal fungi were isolated from wild adult orchids and protocorms and the ITS nrDNA regions sequenced. An in vitro study tested the range of Drakaea species of which each fungus can support germination.. 3. All Drakaea species studied used a narrow monophyletic clade of Tulasnella endophyte for protocorm, seedling and adult plant stages. In situ seed baiting revealed that germination of Drakaea is ...

Polystachya Hook. consists of approximately 240 species, ranging over a wide geographic area. Up to now a very small number of papers dealing with molecular cytogenetics and phylogeny of the genus Polystachya were published. Last cytological analysis was made in year 1979 but it included only a small number of species. This research has involved the largest number of species so far, analyzing total number of 33 species from wide geographical area with the purpose of determining the correct number of chromosomes within the genus Polystachya. It was found that the genus Polystachya is very homogeneous in the context of chromosome number. Basic complement contains twenty chromosomes (x=20). Most of the species are diploids with 2n=2x=40 chromosomes, while 8 species are tetraploid (2n=4x=80) and only one specie is hexaploid (2n=6x=120). There are no significant variations in the distribution and position of heterochromatin within the genus. Most of the species posses heterochromatin blocks located ...
Their lovely blooms are probably as well known as any wildflower that grows in our woodlands and, that occasionally, are found along roadsides.
A seductive journey into the obsessive, outrageous, and mesmerizing world of orchids. From the steaming jungles of Borneo to the hallowed hallways of Kew Gardens, from the clandestine orchid nurseries of Europe to the peat bogs of northern Minnesota, here are luscious, sexy flowers, orchid smugglers, fist-fighting botanists, moths with twelve-inch-long tongues, and government officials who raid orchid nurseries with attack dogs and automatic weapons. Strange tales of insect pollinator fidelity, the orchid ice cream makers of eastern Turkey, and man-crushing killer orchids weighing half a ton are blended with stories about a wide range of gentle people whose passion in life is the creation of scented, fragile flowers. Eric Hansen spent seven years exploring the far corners of the earth -- marveling at flowers of uncommon beauty, studying the history of the orchid trade, and grappling with the vicious, bizarre, and petty world of plant politics that sometimes makes it impossible to protect endangered

15 November 2010. Grant Details Final Report. Mycorrhizal associations and root specialisations are beneficial to plants found in low nutrient soils, particularly those characteristic of Australian heathlands and woodlands. Legumes are characterised by the universal presence of N-fixing nodules, but some species have also been reported to have mycorrhizal associations and cluster roots. Seven species of native legumes commonly found in low nutrient heathy woodland ecosystems in south eastern Australia were grown in pot-culture to determine the relative importance of different nutrient strategies in growth, nodulation and nutrient content. The first pot-culture experiment used soil collected either from the field (unburnt sites with low nutrient capital) or white sand (negligible nutrient content) and with or without a soil P supplement (rock phosphate). All species produced significantly greater above- and belowground biomass, nodulation was higher (greater number and larger nodules) and N and P ...
Do you ever think about plant sex? I still remember walking into the first class of my first ever plant biology course during my undergraduate degree and my professor introducing himself as just another botanist who is obsessed with plant sex. At the time I thought my professor was a quirky guy trying to get the students attention by talking about sex, but now that I am doing a Masters in Botany, it all makes sense - I have yet to meet a botanist who is not absolutely fascinated by the whys and hows and whos and wheres of plant sex. As a plant sex enthusiast myself, I would like to share with you some amazing examples of this ever-important mechanism in hopes of making you a convert, and I cannot think of a better group of plants to do this than the orchids. Have you ever wondered why orchids are all so different and funky looking? If so, you are not alone. Orchids are the second largest group of flowering plants in terms of number of species, and their immense diversity in appearance has been a source

Sounds to me like it is time to repot your orchid! Orchids are epiphytic so their roots need lots of oxygen. When the orchid potting mix (usually a mix of bark, perlite and peat) begins to break down into soil, it holds too much water which invites root rot and fungus gnats. Needless to say, your orchid wont be happy for long in such conditions. It is pretty simple to repot an orchid. Buy some new orchid potting mix. Remove the orchid from the pot and rinse off the roots. Trim off any roots that are withered, brown or rotting; orchid roots should be white and fleshy. Wash the pot thoroughly (especially important because of the fungus gnats.) Hold the orchid in the clean pot so that the roots, including any that may have grown out of the pot, are in the pot and gently pack the new media around them. Normally you would repot every one to two years after the orchid has finished blooming and has just started its dormant stage, but since you are having trouble with the gnats, I recommend you do it ...
Spiranthes from isolated wetlands in Santa Cruz and adjacent Cochise Counties, Arizona, which in the past have been cited as S. graminea Lindl., differ from that species in several floral and vegetative characters and in chromosome number; they are readily separated from it by their few-septate trichomes. The more northern S. diluvialis Sheviak is larger-flowered with more ringent flowers and different flower and sepal orientation. The morphological and cytological features of the Arizona plants indicate that they represent a distinct species, described here as S. delitescens Sheviak. The cytology of this species suggests an origin through hybridization and amphiploidy, but the parental species are not identified ...
Dendrobium orchids comprise the largest and most diverse catch-all orchid genus. It almost seems that whenever taxonomists dont know where an orchid belongs, they classify it as Dendrobium. But of course, there is at least some logic to the organization. The over 1,200 Dendrobium species are native to the tropics of Asia and The Pacific. Papua New Guinea alone has more than 500 species. Usually you would find Dendrobium growing in the tops of trees. In fact, the name Dendrobium is Greek for life in a tree.. Dendrobium are so diverse that you could find them growing in tropical lowlands and all the way to an altitude of 10,000 feet (3,000 meters). You could also find them in humid, swampy ground or desert-like environments. As you can imagine, that diversity does not make it easy for me to tell you exactly how to grow your Dendrobium. So youre out of luck.. Just kidding - Ill try. Some species like it hot; some like it cool. Some species are deciduous and require a break from watering, but ...
