Purpose: : Angiogenic and growth factors have an important role in directing inflammation and wound healing. At the present time there is limited knowledge of their respective roles in the evolution of pediatric orbital abscesses. Our study aims to characterize the growth and angiogenic factors present within pediatric subperiosteal orbital abscess fluid collections. Methods: : All pediatric cases of subperiosteal orbital abscess drainage performed at a single institution from July 2005 through May 2006 were included in this prospective laboratory study. An external approach was used to drain each fluid collection. In addition to submitting the abscess fluid for routine microbiological analysis, a portion of the abscess fluid was sampled in a sterile fashion and retained for characterization using a cytokine protein membrane array (RayBio Human Cytokine Arrays VI and VII, RayBiotech, Inc., Norcross, GA.) Chemiluminescence was employed to assess for the presence of specific proteins, and those ...
Interesting orbital diseases, besides tumors, include malformations and inflammatory, traumatic, degenerative and dysthyroid diseases, whose incidence depends on factors such as genetic predisposition, sex, race and, especially, age. The two leading diseases in terms of incidence are inflammatory forms and cysts, while dysthyroid orbital disease ranks third, followed by vascular malformations, which rank first for prevalence in adolescents. Traumatisms come fifth, followed by tumors in the sixth place. Until the age of 20, hemangioma is the most frequent orbital disease that alone is the fourth overall cause in terms of incidence. In the 20-60 years of age group the disease is dominated by dysthyroid orbital disease (ca 60% of cases), followed by tumors. In patients aged over 60, dysthyroid orbital disease rank first for incidence, almost at the same level with tumors. Often orbital tumors are rather hard to diagnose as the clinical events triggered by both neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases ...
Thyroid Eye Disease or Graves Eye Disease is perhaps the most common orbital disease in our population. It is an autoimmune problem, most commonly noted in patient with a history of either high or low thyroid hormones. However, some patients might demonstrate no evidence of thyroid dysfunction. Thyroid Eye Disease can go into periods of remission as well. When it has been inactive for a period of more than 6 months, its less likely to recur.. Thyroid Eye Disease can be divided in stages. During the early part of the disease, the eyes become red, swollen, and watery. This early part of the disease is referred to as the active and inflammatory phase of the disease. During this initial phase of the disease, patients may benefit from treatments to reduce inflammation such as anti-inflammatory medications or injections, topical lubricating eye drops and ointments, and in some cases, referral for orbital radiation. In the later part of the disease the eyes may bulge out of the socket, the eyelids ...

Because of the relatively low complication rate from endoscopic surgery of the paranasal sinuses, orbital injury only occasionally presents to the ophthalmologist. These orbital complications include injury to the nasolacrimal duct, orbital emphysema, diplopia, orbital haematoma, and temporary or permanent blindness.2 The most devastating complication is blindness resulting from optic nerve compression by haematoma or direct injury to the nerve itself. If injury of the anterior ethmoidal artery occurs during the ethmoidectomy, it may be difficult to control the bleeding owing to the contraction of the vessel into the orbit.. The pathogenesis of subperiosteal orbital haematoma is (1) traumatic tearing of an orbital vessel, (2) rupture of a subperiosteal vessel secondary to increased venous pressure transmitted by valveless orbital veins from congested sinus mucosa, or (3) erosion of a vessel by orbital extension of an infectious process. Its frequent occurrence in the roof of the orbit may be ...

Orbital subperiosteal hemorrhage (SpH) is a rare cause of spontaneous proptosis, which results most commonly from direct trauma but also from increased central vascular congestion following valsalva, weightlifting, emesis, or scuba diving.(1-4) Additionally, SpH may result from periorbital inflammation (eg, sinusitis, orbital cellulitis, endophthalmitis), underlying metabolic disorders, vascular disorders, orbital infarction, migraines, or idiopathically.(5-8) Although most resolve without long-term visual or orbital sequelae, some SpHs may cause profound visual loss as well as orbital changes. Acute hematomas can resolve spontaneously or develop into subacute and chronic hematomas (hematic cysts of the orbit). In this light, SpH shares features with epidural hematomas of the central nervous system. The literature on acute SpH consists of isolated cases reports underscoring the rarity of the condition.(8) Because many reports of orbital hemorrhage do not differentiate between intraconal, ...

Results Within orbital fat, fibrosis was greatest among subjects with GPA (2.75±0.46) and significantly increased in tissue from subjects with GPA, NSOI or sarcoidosis (p,0.01), but not for TED, compared with healthy controls (1.13±0.69). For lacrimal gland, the average score among controls (1.36±0.48) did not differ statistically from any of the four disease groups. Seventy-three probe sets identified transcripts correlating with fibrosis in orbital fat (false discovery rate ,0.05) after accounting for batch effects, disease type, age and sex. Transcripts with increased expression included fibronectin, lumican, thrombospondin and collagen types I and VIII, each of which has been reported upregulated in pulmonary fibrosis. ...

Orbital lesions form a wide range of pathologies that pose challenges in diagnosis, management and treatment. The soft tissue detail provided by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows for better lesion characterization. MRI therefore plays a crucial role, especially in cases where history and clinical evaluation are inconclusive [1]. There are several approaches for the correct diagnosis of orbital pathology. A common diagnostic strategy is the localization of the pathology into the four main orbital compartments [2]: the ocular compartment or globe, the muscle cone and the intraconal and extraconal spaces (Figure 1). The muscle cone contains recti muscles and their fasciae; on its base, the globe is present, and the optic canal figures the apex. The globe is encircled by the Tenons capsule, which has three layers: the sclera, uvea and retina. The extraconal space includes the superior and inferior oblique muscles, levator muscle complex, the lacrimal gland and the orbital fat. The aim of this ...

There are some cases you see in the hospital that compel or affirm your interest in a specific field of medicine. I have always been interested in infectious disease (ID), and I am known as the bug guy in my class. Its an odd choice, and I am one of the few that I have met in my class with a true passion for ID. I admit that it seems a bit alienating at times, but the cases I have seen with my ID mentors have been some of the most interesting I have experienced, and the following case is one of my favorites.. The patient was a 43-year-old man with a past medical history significant for hypertension and diabetes. He presented to the emergency department with a very simple complaint: I blew out my eye. Upon physical examination there was severe erythema of the right eye with periorbital swelling and marked proptosis. It was one of those cases where you look at the patient and you say, I may not know much, but I know that is not good. The patients extraocular muscle movements were not ...

Only 2 of the 2p orbitals are used in sp2 hybridisation; in contrast to the 3 used in sp3 hybridisation (you should be seeing where the numbers come from!).. This leaves us with 3 sp3-orbitals and 1 p-orbital to bond with. 2 of the sp3 orbitals are used for forming σ-bonds with the 2 hydrogens, while the remaining sp3 orbital binds with the other carbon to form a σ-bond and the p-orbital bonds with a p-orbital from the other carbon to form a π-bond.. Every double bond (regardless of what atoms it joins) consists of a π-bond and a σ-bond.. ...

None of what youve learned so far is wrong. However, your understanding of bonding in covalent compounds isnt yet complete. Specifically, while we know that electrons are shared between two atoms in a covalent molecule, we dont have any ideas about the locations of these electrons. As you might imagine, theyre located within orbitals, but what sort of orbitals exist between two atoms?. Why are orbitals important? As it turns out, covalent bonds are formed when two orbitals from different atoms, each of which have one electron in them, overlap so that these two electrons are shared. Because these orbitals need to overlap for a bond to be formed, its important that we understand the shapes of orbitals that are formed in covalent compounds.. Before we can fully understand the true nature of orbitals in covalent compounds, we must see whats incomplete about our current understanding of orbitals and electrons. Imagine CH4. The type of diagram we saw in Getting to Know Covalent Compounds makes ...

Cavernous sinus thrombosis (CST) is mainly ascribed to infection of the sphenoid and ethmoid sinuses. The infection may spread due to retrograde thrombophlebitis involving the ophthalmic vein or direct extension. Initially, the patient may suffer from periorbital edema, diplopia, photophobia, headache and fever.. Inflammatory edema is also called preseptal or periorbital cellulite. Eyelids swell near the orbital septum, but the orbits soft tissues are not affected. The septum prevents infection from spreading into the orbit. If extra ocular movement stops, soft tissues are also affected.. Orbital abscess means pus accumulation within the tissue of the orbit. This complication may lead to proptosis, which means forward displacement or projection of the eyeball, and loss of vision. The abscess may also limit the extra ocular movement.. Orbital cellulite implies inflammation and edema of the orbit area, but there is no abscess. Partial or complete paralysis of eye muscles (ophthalmoplegia), ...

Periorbital puffiness, also known as puffy eyes, or swelling around the eyes, is the appearance of swelling in the tissues around the eyes, called the orbits. It is almost exclusively caused by fluid buildup around the eyes, or periorbital edema. Minor puffiness usually detectable below the eyes only (although at times they could be present all around) is often called eye bags. Such transient puffiness is distinct from the age related and gradual increase in the size of the fat pad lying below the lower eyelids (suborbicularis oculi fat - SOOF) which can also be colloquially referred to as eye bags. While some degree of puffiness may be normal for a given individual, factors such as age and fatigue may make the swelling more prominent. The periorbital tissues are most noticeably swollen immediately after waking, perhaps due to the gravitational redistribution of fluid in the horizontal position. Eye puffiness may also be caused by: Mononucleosis - With supra-orbital oedema, the eyes become ...

I once had the same question as you and I did go to my chemistry teacher for an answer. This is his original response:. In hydrogen, all orbitals with the same principal quantum number n (1,2,3...) are degenerate, regardless of the orbital angular momentum quantum number l (0,1...n-1 or s,p,d,). However, in atoms with more than one electron, orbitals with different values of l for a given value for n are not degenerate. Why is this? Surely the radial distribution functions are similar for hydrogen (in that theres still penetration of orbitals and so on). Or is it that orbitals with different values of l are degenerate for a value of n greater than would be occupied in that particular atoms ground state?. The answer is right there in your question. Its only the interaction of multiple electrons in an atom like He, Li, Be, etc. that makes the different angular momenta wave functions differ in energy. Consider this. For the one electron system, why should a p or d orbital differ in energy ...

Edema without a modifier usually refers to peripheral or dependent edema, the accumulation of fluid in the parts of the body that are most affected by gravity. In ambulatory people these are the legs, although in those who are bedbound the first manifestation may be sacral edema. If severe enough, peripheral edema may progress to involve the abdominal or even thoracic wall (this may be referred to as generalized edema or (anasarca). In particular edema states (e.g. nephrotic syndrome, see below), periorbital edema (around the eyes) may be present. ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Deviation of stellar orbits from test particle trajectories around SGr A* due to tides and winds. AU - Psaltis, Dimitrios. AU - Li, Gongjie. AU - Loeb, Abraham. PY - 2013/11/1. Y1 - 2013/11/1. N2 - Monitoring the orbits of stars around Sgr A* offers the possibility of detecting the precession of their orbital planes due to frame dragging, of measuring the spin and quadrupole moment of the black hole, and of testing the no-hair theorem. Here we investigate whether the deviations of stellar orbits from test-particle trajectories due to wind mass loss and tidal dissipation of the orbital energy compromise such measurements. We find that the effects of stellar winds are, in general, negligible. On the other hand, for the most eccentric orbits (e , 0.96) for which an optical interferometer, such as GRAVITY, will detect orbital plane precession due to frame dragging, the tidal dissipation of orbital energy occurs at timescales comparable to the timescale of precession due to the ...
Question 1: B. The element must be from Group IV so the electronic configuration must be either 1s22s22p2 or 1s22s22p63s23p2. The four electrons of highest energy refer to the electrons at shells with higher principal quantum number. The best answer is B.. Question 2: B. Sigma bonds can be formed via head-on overlap between two s orbitals, two p orbitals and between one s and one p orbitals. In hydrocarbons, the carbon atoms have hybrid orbitals consisting of s and p orbitals. Hence, sigma bonds can be formed by either s or p orbitals while the pi bonds can only be formed by side-way overlap between two p orbitals.. Question 3: C. Oxygen atom has 8 electrons. Hydrogen atom has 1 electron. Since hydroxide anion has an extra electron gained, the total number of electrons is 10. Oxygen atom has 8 neutrons while hydrogen atom has no neutrons. Hence, the answer is C.. Question 4: C. A higher charge on Ca2+ would mean that the electrostatic forces of attraction between the cation and the sea of mobile ...
The ability to perform an inclination change maximizes the maneuverability of an orbiting space vehicle. Most maneuvers utilize a combined plane change and orbital transfer to the new orbit. This costs more in terms of energy and fuel than an in-plane change of orbits. The amount of DV and fuel required for such an energyintensive inclination change exceeds the benefit of performing the maneuver. However, this paper demonstrates that a winged re-entry vehicle, based on the currently proposed X-37, has the necessary thrust to change planes and then perform an in-plane transfer to achieve a new orbit. Using SIMULINKâ and LABVIEWâ simulation tools, this research found that the use of the aerodynamic lift of a winged re-entry vehicle produced more than 12Ê» of inclination change with the minimal DV achievable. Through small orbital maneuvers and atmospheric reentry, the aerodynamics of the lift vector demonstrated that the spacecraft retained sufficient energy to prevent perigee collapse using ...
Update your local map file entry with the path to the Orbit bundle. The platform releng team has added an orbit.map to their map file project org.eclipse.releng/maps, see example orbit map The reason we dont consume the Orbit map directly yet is because we are migrating to Orbit bundles on a ongoing basis. If we consumed the Orbit map file directly today, we would have duplicate locations for the several bundles which would cause build issues. Once we have migrated completely to consuming all our third party libraries from Orbit, we plan to modify our build process to consume the Orbit map file directly and remove the orbit.map from our map file project ...

CiteSeerX - Document Details (Isaac Councill, Lee Giles, Pradeep Teregowda): The problem of many revolution low-thrust Earth-orbit trajectory optimization is considered. The objective is to transfer a spacecraft from a parking orbit to a de-sired terminal orbit in minimum time. The minimum-time orbital transfer problem is posed as a nonlinear optimal control problem, and the optimal control problem is solved using a direct transcription variable-order Gaussian quadrature collocation method. It is found that the thrust-to-mass ratio holds a power relationship to the transfer time, final mass, and final true longitude. Using these power relationships obtained through regression on the collected results, it is possible to estimate the performance of a given thrust-to-mass ratio without solving for the optimal trajec-tory. In addition, the key structure of the optimal orbital transfers are identified. The results presented provide insight into the structure of the optimal performance for a range of small
For the restricted three-body problem, we propose an accurate orbital integration scheme that retains all conserved quantities of the two-body problem with two primaries and approximately preserves the Jacobi integral. The scheme is obtained by taking the limit as mass approaches zero in the discrete-time general three-body problem. For a long time interval, the proposed scheme precisely reproduces various periodic orbits that cannot be accurately computed by other generic integrators. ...
