Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten. is widely cultivated in Jeju Island (South Korea) for use in manufacture of health foods. This study described antidepressant effect of two flavonoids (kaempferol and quercitrin) isolated from the Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten. The expression of the hypothalamic POMC mRNA or plasma β-endorphin levels were increased by extract of Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten or its flavoniods administered orally. In addition, antidepressant activity was studied using tail suspension test (TST), forced swimming test (FST) and rota-rod test in chronically restraint immobilization stress group in mice. After restraint stress (2 hrs/day for 14 days), animals were kept in cage for 14 days without any further stress, bet with drugs. Mice were fed with a diet supplemented for 14 days and during the behavioral test period with kaempferol or quercitrin (30 mg/kg/day). POMC mRNA or plasma β-endorphin level was increased by extract of Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten and its flavoniods
The nopal cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica) releases a substance through its mucilage, which comes from the degradation of pectic substances and chlorophyll. Combined in a polyvinyl alcohol matrix, this substance can be used as a recording medium. The resulting extract material has excellent photosensitizer properties, is easy to handle, has a low cost, and low toxicity. This material has the property of self-developing, and it can be used in holographic applications. The polyvinyl alcohol and extract from the nopal cactus was deposited by a gravity technique on a glass substrate, which dried to form a photosensitive emulsion. We show experimental results on a holographic grating using this material, written by a He-Cd laser (442 nm). We obtained diffraction gratings by transmission with a diffraction efficiency of approximately 32.3% to first order.

This work investigates the fabrication, characterization and testing of Opuntia ficus-indica mucilage nanofibers to be utilized in water filtration systems. These mucilage nanofibers are formed using different polymers through a process called electrospinning. The polymers used to promote the formation of nanofibers are poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) and polystyrene (PS). The mucilage is a jelly like substance extracted from the pads of the cactus plant. It is a mixture of proteins, complex polysaccharides and monosaccharaides. It is an inexpensive, non-toxic, biodegradable and biocompatible material which is present in abundance. The mucilage extracted from the pads is mixed with acetic acid to form the mucilage solution. The mucilage solution is then mixed by volume with co-spinning polymers, PVA and PS. PVA is a synthetic polymer that is water-soluble, and this work considers two types of PVA differentiated based upon molecular weight, such as low molecular weight PVA and high molecular weight PVA.

Stem surface of a prickly pear cactus (Opuntia spp.) showing sunken stomata, scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Cacti typically have sunken stomata, which are an adaptation to drought conditions. An additional adaptation to a harsh environment is the fine covering of wax across the leaf or stem surface. Stomata (plural of stoma) are tiny openings in the epidermis of a plant that are surrounded by pairs of crescent-shaped cells, called guard cells (specialized parenchyma cells), that facilitate gas exchange. Stomata are present in the sporophyte generation of all land plant groups except liverworts. Prickly pear cacti typically grow with flat, rounded platyclades that are armed with two kinds of spines; large, smooth, fixed spines and small, hair like spines called glochids that easily penetrate skin and detach from the plant. All known species are associated with cacti of the genus Opuntia (sens. lat.). Gerstaeckeria hubbardi was listed by Pierce (1912) from Opuntia vulgaris. However, Small (1925) did not list this species from Florida although he does list approximately 13 other species of Opuntia from within the range of Gerstaeckeria hubbardi. At Gainesville, the author found it on the joe jumper, probably Opuntia tracyii. The localities where Gerstaeckeria fasciata was found are within the distribution of at least three species of Opuntia (dillenii, keyensis, stricta). The genus Opuntia is a large and taxonomically confusing one, with the status of several Florida forms somewhat in doubt. However, it is likely that Gerstaeckeria hubbardi feeds on several species. It is possible that Gerstaeckeria fasciata, with its restricted distribution, is more host specific. ...
Our previous publications and the data presented here provide evidences on the ability of plant-based culture media to optimize the cultivability of rhizobacteria and to support their recovery from plant-soil environments. Compared to the tested chemically-synthetic culture media (e.g. nutrient agar and N-deficient combined-carbon sources media), slurry homogenates, crude saps, juices and powders of cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica) and succulent plants (Aloe vera and Aloe arborescens) were rich enough to support growth of rhizobacteria. Representative isolates of Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella spp., Bacillus spp. and Azospirillum spp. exhibited good growth on agar plates of such plant-based culture media. Cell growth and biomass production in liquid batch cultures were comparable to those reported with the synthetic culture media. In addition, the tested plant-based culture media efficiently recovered populations of rhizobacteria associated to plant roots. Culturable populations of ,106-108 cfu ...

My first identification consideration was that it was the Opuntia ficus indica which are indigenous throughout Tropical America. One reason that this seemed a good candidate was that the pads of one of its several varieties take on a more reddish hue, as have mine. However, while its large flowers (mine are more mid-sized) are yellow in color, generally their stamens are as well while the centers of mine are green.. Next I looked at what with consideration of its flowers has been described as one of the most beautiful members of the genus the, also yellow-flowered, Opuntia gosseliniana. But, during the course of careful perusal, I noted that its pads are more discshaped. Opuntia tomentosa became my next candidate, but then I realized it sports flowers of orange-red with red perianth (the outer part of a flower) segments. Then, upon first seeing the flowers of the Opuntia humifusa, my initial inclination was Eureka, Ive found it! But, no, I realized that its flower petal tips were markedly ...
In this study, we aimed to evaluate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of Opuntia ficus-indica cactus cladode extracts in microglia BV-2 cells. Inflammation associated with microglia activation in neuronal injury can be achieved by LPS exposure. Using four different structurally and biologically well-characterized LPS serotypes, we revealed a structure-related differential effect of LPS on fatty acid β-oxidation and antioxidant enzymes in peroxisomes: Escherichia coli-LPS decreased ACOX1 activity while Salmonella minnesota-LPS reduced only catalase activity. Different cactus cladode extracts showed an antioxidant effect through microglial catalase activity activation and an anti-inflammatory effect by reducing nitric oxide (NO) LPS-dependent production. These results suggest that cactus extracts may possess a neuroprotective activity through the induction of peroxisomal antioxidant activity and the inhibition of NO production by activated microglial cells.

1) Antidiabetic properties. Research on the antidiabetic properties of prickly pear suggests that the fiber and pectin (a polysaccharide) content of the fruit may decrease the intestinal absorption of sugar, contributing to lower blood glucose levels (Hypoglycemic activity of two polysaccharides isolated from Opuntia ficus-indica and O. streptacantha). Similarly, dozens of other preliminary animal and clinical studies label several prickly pear varieties as safe for glycemic control and encourage regular consumption. (Systematic review of herbs and dietary supplements for glycemic control in diabetes, Diabetes care, April 2003). 2) Natural anti-inflammatory. In a study entitled An anti-inflammatory principle from cactus, prickly pear stems have been shown to possess efficient anti-inflammatory properties. Beta-sitosterol, a plant compound similar to cholesterol, appears to be responsible for the anti-inflammatory action of the species. At the same time, the fruits inflammation-relieving ...
Functional food defined as dietary supplements that in addition to their nutritional values, can beneficially modulate body functions becomes more and more popular but the reaction of the intestinal microbiota to it is largely unknown. In order to analyse the impact of functional food on the microbiota itself it is necessary to focus on the physiology of the microbiota, which can be assessed in a whole by untargeted metabolomics. Obtaining a detailed description of the gut microbiota reaction to food ingredients can be a key to understand how these organisms regulate and bioprocess many of these food components. Extracts prepared from seven chief functional foods, namely green tea, black tea, Opuntia ficus-indica (prickly pear, cactus pear), black coffee, green coffee, pomegranate, and sumac were administered to a gut consortium culture encompassing 8 microbes which are resembling, to a large extent, the metabolic activities found in the human gut. Samples were harvested at 0.5 and 24 h post ...

What is a sabra? A sabra is a form of cactus, Opuntia ficus-indica, that grows extensively in Israel. The fruit of the sabra has a thick peel with a sharp spine and is covered in prickly thorns. Once the rough and deterring exterior is peeled away, however, you will reach the contrasting sweet pulp. Authentic Israelis are often referred to as sabras because they tend to be outwardly tough and coarse, but once you get to know them they really are a soft, sweet and sensitive people ...

In this work, performances of coagulation and flocculation were tested for two different industrial effluents. Coagulation-Flocculation and activated carbon adsorption were applied for the remediation of oil sands process-affected water (OSPW), generated from oil sands operations in Alberta, Canada. OSPW is a complex mixture of suspended solids, various suspended and dissolved organic compounds. Alum and natural coagulant Opuntia ficus-indica (OFI) were used as the coagulants, and the process was optimized to improve the removal of turbidity and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The maximum removal of 98% and 63% in turbidity and DOC from OSPW, respectively occurred at pH=6.32, with an alum dosage of 190.44 mg/L and activated carbon at 0.28 g/L. Whereas a comparable removal of turbidity and DOC from OSPW occurred at similar pH and carbon loading at a much higher dosage of 780 mg/L for natural coagulant. Adsorption on polymer seems to be the mechanism of removal of DOC from OSPW during coagulation. Natural

Linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid that occurs naturally in the body. It is part of the omega 6 group of fatty acids and is responsible in maintaining the good health of the skin barrier, the front line of protection to keep toxic chemicals out of the body. Linoleic acid also keeps the skin water resistant as it seals in moisture and essential nutrients, lubricating it which in turn helps to prevent water evaporation. A shortage of linoleic acid in the body can cause hair loss and dryness as well as poor repair of injuries. (Source) This all important nutrient is an effective anti-inflammatory, and is known for lessening the occurrences of dermatitis as well as treating acne prone skin that has been found to be deficient in linoleic acid. ...

Find out how to care for a prickly pear cactus (Opuntia), including planting, watering and propagation. Expert advice from BBC Gardeners World Magazine.
This publication summarizes 25 years of heretofore unreported efforts to effect the biological control of prickly pear cacti infesting rangeland on Santa Cruz Island, situated off the coast of southern California. To date, partial to substantial biological control of the pest cacti, Opuntia littoralis (Engelmann) Cockerell, O. oricola Philbrick, and their hybrids, has been achieved. The principal biological control agent is a cochineal insect, Dactylopius sp., which is native to the southern California mainland. It was introduced to the island free of its principal natural enemies-Hyperaspis taeniata significanis Casey and Laetilia coccidivora (Comstock)-and has multiplied markedly, at the same time destroying numerous clumps of cacti throughout the island. While there is truth to this, a cactus-especially the Nopal cactus, have been helping mankind in more ways than we have never thought.. These days, Nopal cactus more famous form is when its edible pads are dried and ground into powder. It is considered by many health advocates as one of the healthiest food supplements in the market these days. But before basking in the glory of being a world-known superfood, Nopales as locals of Mexico call it, has been a common food ingredient for local cuisine in this part of Central America.. For Americans, Nopales is called prickly pear or paddle cactus. In botany, this vegetable variety is known as Opuntia ficus indica.. The origins of the Nopal cactus date back from the 14th century in the volcanic regions of Mesoamerica that is now called Mexico. ...

Even though not everyone had brought their sale plants, I did end up walking home with quite a haul--my birthday presents to myself. In an updated order by request, I bought (from top left going clockwise in a swirly upside-down e shape with a dent in its head) a Dyckia Red Devil, Euphorbia greenwayi, Neoalsomitra sarcophylla, Sansevieria ballyi, Ornithogalum caudatum (this plant has a lot of synonymous genus and species names--The Plant List says Albuca bracteata is its true name, but Ill go with O. caudatum because thats what Ive been calling it on here for all of these years), Stapelia NOID (I think this might actually be a Huernia, but Ill have to wait for it to flower before I know for sure), Tephrocactus articulatus (although The Plant List says this is actually Opuntia articulata and Tephrocactus isnt a genus anymore, I think Tephrocactus is used often enough for this particular plant group that people might get confused if I called this an Opuntia), Sedum hintonii, Hechtia ...
Cacti belong to a large family of plants, the Cactaceae. Relatively little is known about the medicinal effects of cacti, but at least some are known to be medicinally active. For example, prickly pears (Opuntia spp.) are known to possess antioxidant compounds called betalains. A recent Italian study (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=15277160&query_hl=1) showed that supplementation with prickly pear has a strong effect on free radicals (the harmful compounds) in the body and that this antioxidant effect is different from the effect of vitamin C, a well-known antioxidant. Another recent study (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=15226168&query_hl=1) showed that a prickly pear extract can reduce the risk of a severe hangover from alcohol consumption by a half. Yet another study ...
Many of the genera within the Opuntioideae are not monophyletic. Maihueniopsis is highly polyphyletic, appearing in four separate lineages. The two largest genera within the subfamily, Opuntia and Cylindropuntia are also not monophyletic. The classification of the Opuntioideae is thus uncertain as of March 2012[update]; Griffith and Porter say that changes in classification will require broad information (of multiple data types) regarding all species of opuntioid cacti.[8] The ICSG classification divides the subfamily Cactoideae into nine tribes. However, phylogenetic research has not supported most of these tribes, nor even the genera of which they are composed. A 2011 study found that an extraordinarily high proportion of genera were not monophyletic, including 22 (61%) of the 36 genera in the subfamily Cactoideae sampled in the research.[4] Of the nine tribes recognized within Cactoideae, one, Calymmantheae, comprises a single genus, Calymmanthium.[2] Of the remaining eight, only two ...
Coagulation being a cost-effective method is best suited for water treatment in rural areas. Natural coagulants suited for the simultaneous removal of turbidity and hardness were investigated. In this study, the seeds of Strychnos Potatorum, the pads of Cactus Opuntia and mucilage extracted from the fruits of Coccinia Indica in synthetic turbid water were used to promote coagulation. The mechanism of turbidity removal by the use of natural coagulants was based on adsorption and charge neutralization. In addition, the adsorption mechanism of hardness removal in hard water conforms to both Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models. Therefore, for hard water the natural coagulants tend to adsorb hardness and form a net like structure followed by turbidity removal by sweep flocculation. The potential of these natural coagulants were obtained by means of jar test study with initial turbidities of 192 NTU (High) and 28 NTU (Low). It was found that the natural coagulants can be more efficiently used ...

Experiments at the University of Florida Tropical Aquaculture Laboratory were run to test various shipping chemical additives for their effects on appearance and behavior of fish post shipping. The chemicals tested were tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222), salt (3 ppt NaCl), methylene blue, acriflavine neutral, quinaldine, eugenol, an experimental commercial product in the form of a feed, and a water additive.. The commercial product contained arachidonic acid (ArA), a fungus extract from Mortierella sp., claimed by the manufacturer to be used to regulate immune systems; and an ethanol extract from the genus Opuntia, a cactus species, claimed by the manufacturer to be used to stimulate the production of heat shock proteins (HSPs) that work to counteract stress responses.. Tricaine methanesulfonate is approved for use in finfish as a sedative and anesthetic. Quinaldine and eugenol are not approved for use in aquaculture. A radiant morning sun shone warm and bright on my face, and a feathery breeze teased my hair as it blew across the high desert. The air smelled fresh and clean, redolent with sweet, delicate fragrances of dried flower blossoms on small bushes and the mild aroma of sticky creosote being coaxed out of the chaparral by the warmth of early spring. The last week of March was still early for the yuccas, spidery ocatillo, jumping cholla and opuntia cactus, which were just beginning to burst forth with their floral profusion. But the wildlife was out in full force, and the desert was teeming with living creatures, from yucca night lizards to kangaroo rats, sidewinders, tarantulas and stinkbugs.. I was taking a week off prior to a business trip to hike and photograph some of the medicinal plants in the high desert of southern California. No phone, no to-do list, no meetings. I welcomed the solitude, the peace, the distant removal from frenetic civilization. The first night of my stay I had a wild, ...
Dataset is obtained directly from the web application that results from the submitted sightings. Data submitted is from the responsibility of the users registered in the platform. The scientific team of the project validate the sightings based only on photographs submitted along with the sighting; whenever there is doubt about the identification of the species, the user is contacted and the sighting is only validated if another photo or explanation allows verifying the species identification. However, in such a citizen science platform is not possible to be 100% sure of the reliability of the data. Nevertheless, as stated previously, the users that are more active in the platform (more than 80% of the sightings) have expertise in plant identification. For some species, namely Arundo donax, Opuntia maxima, Conyza bonariensis, Conyza canadensis, Conyza sumatrensis, Agave americana and Pittosporum undulatum, identification to species level is rather difficult when photographs are not very detailed; ...

In Sicily this large-growing, usually thornless cactus is cultivated for its abundant crop of fruit. Its also an aggressive invader of dry, sunny natural areas. Prickly pear is not a native Sicilian plant. However, growing conditions here are so well matched to its needs that this cactus can now be found wild or a garden plant over most of the island. When ripe, the purple or yellowish flesh of the fruit or tuna is edible and sweet, but the small hard seeds that are densely packed in the fruit pulp may be a problem for people with gastrointestinal sensitivity. Besides being eaten raw, Prickly pear fruits are made into jams and jellies, and the Sicilian province of Enna produces a Prickly pear flavored liqueur called Ficodi. Wear gloves when peeling Prickly pear fruits or handle them with tongs or a newspaper to avoid the clusters of tiny, sharp bristles that dot their surface ...

There are approximately 150 genera in the Cactaceae family. They are further divided into three subgroups or tribes. These are Pereskieae, Opunitieae and Cactoidea. Most cacti fall into the Cactoidea subgroup. Two genera, Pereskia and Maihueniahe Persicae make up the subgroup. Cacti in these genera have woody stems and persistent or semideciduous leaves. The areoles are spiny and woolly at the leaf axils. The cacti also have pendulous flowers and fleshy fruit. The Opunitieae are the prickly pear varieties -- Pereskiopsis, Pterocactus, Quiabentia, Tacinga.
