Occupational exposures of healthcare workers tend to occur because of inconsistent compliance with standard precautions. Also, incidence of occupational exposure is underreported among operating room personnel. The purpose of this project was to develop national estimates for compliance with standard precautions and occupational exposure reporting practices among operating room nurses in Australia. Data was obtained utilizing a 96-item self-report survey. The Standard Precautions and Occupational Exposure Reporting survey was distributed anonymously to 500 members of the Australian College of Operating Room Nurses. The Health Belief Model was the theoretical framework used to guide the analysis of data. Data was analysed to examine relationships between specific constructs of the Health Belief Model to identify factors that might influence the operating room nurse to undertake particular health behaviours to comply with standard precautions and occupational exposure reporting. Results of the ...

Progress in thoracic surgery has mirrored that of general surgery, with many open procedures giving way to minimally invasive techniques. Although the realm of trauma has traditionally been immune to this phenomenon, it too has undergone refinement. Perhaps the most striking example of a shift towards minimally invasive approaches in trauma has been that of retrograde endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta in lieu of resuscitative emergency department thoracotomy.1 Additional examples of this trend include video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomy for both malignant and nonmalignant pulmonary lesions, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) guided mediastinal lymph node biopsy, navigational bronchoscopy, and endoscopic approaches to esophageal pathology. ...

Here so the next thing you d have to do is for your static budget. You just need a budgeted quantity times. Some budgeted variable cost okay so now for our unit cost variance here that would be just taking our actual variable cost here difference between your actual variable cost here and the budgeted variable cost actual variable cost from the actual amounts for the period budget variable cost coming off your static budget. So what what we re doing is just factoring out this actual quantity here from our total variable cost here so you look at the actual quantity here and that s looking at the actual versus your flexible budget.. So you ve factored out that 8q here and you know it s just the difference between the actual variable cost in your budget variable cost here. So that s your unit cost variance. Here and for your sales volume variants. This is where you re looking at your flexible versus your static budget again we re just going to factor it out here so here s the case.. Where you the ...
Background: Surgical complications has been the main cause of medical injuries and deaths worldwide. In 2008 WHO developed the checklist for safe surgery to reduce the number of surgical complications. The objective of the checklist is to strengthen already established safety routines and contribute to better cooperation and communication. Research shows that compliance to the checklist is deficient, which can affect patient safety.. Aim: The aim was to study the extent to which theatre nurses participate in the use of the checklist.. Method: Observational study was conducted with a descriptive design and quantitative approach. 24 observations were carried out with aid of an observation protocol of two surgical units at a hospital in central Sweden.. Result: The results showed that Timeout initiated widely but compliance to all items was considerably lower. Team member introductions, patient ID, planned surgery and antibiotic prophylaxis had highest compliance. Theatre nurse responsibilities in ...

Nurses play critical roles in patient safety and are often the last line of defense against medical errors and unsafe practices. Considerable research has explored the relationship between the nurse work environment and a variety of patient and nurse quality and safety outcomes. But until now, no synthesis of this body of research has been made to clearly articulate the association between nurse work environments and health care quality, safety and patient and clinician well-being.. ...
2601 Objectives of Board.. The primary objective of the Examining Board of Physical Therapists and Athletic Trainers, to which all other objectives and purposes are secondary, is to protect the general public (especially those persons who are direct recipients of services regulated by this chapter) from unsafe practices and from occupational practices which tend to reduce competition or to fix the price of services rendered. The secondary objectives of the Board are to maintain minimum standards of practitioner competency, and to maintain certain standards in the delivery of services to the public. In meeting its objectives, the Board shall develop standards assuring professional competence; shall monitor complaints brought against regulated practitioners of occupational groups under the jurisdiction of the Board; shall adjudicate at formal complaint hearings; shall develop rules and regulations; and shall impose sanctions where necessary against persons in the occupational groups regulated by ...
In the past two years our experience advertising for theatre nurses nationally and in Europe had very little success. Our reliance on agency nurses was high. We have now filled our vacancies in theatres, however we do have to look to the future and plan the workforce. There are a number of retirements in the next five years and recruitment will continue. Having established the current workforce we intend to recruit in this country and Europe, said Colette Martindale, Surgical Directorate of Salisbury District Hospital ...
Introduction: The operating theatre nurse (OTN) is responsible for the patients care during the perioperative process and it should be conducted on the basis of person-centered care (PCC). In the high-tech environment the OTN work as a link between technology and the patient. Only a few studies illustrate the OTNs perioperative care and the need for a care-oriented work in the operating room is questionable.. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe OTNs experiences of the characteristics of perioperative nursing.. Method: The study was a qualitative interview study with an inductive approach. The data was collected through reflexive interviews of ten OTNs from two surgical clinics. The interviews were based on a perceived situation of perioperative care. Data analysis was carried out with content analysis.. Result: The OTNs experiences of perioperative care can be summarized in one key category: Patient safe care. Three generic categories emerged: Preserving the patients dignity, ...
Mother Injected With Wrong Drug Unlawfully Killed - 09/02/2017. An inquest jury has ruled that a new mother who was wrongly injected with an epidural was unlawfully killed. Maria Cabrera, a Filipino theatre nurse died less than 3 hours after giving birth to her first child at the Great Western Hospital, Swindon in May 2004.. The midwife on duty, Marie To is accused of administering Bupivacaine, an anaesthetic usually used in an epidural, directly via a drip into Cabreras arm. Although she has denied this claim, the Swindon & Marlborough NHS trust have taken responsibility for the incident. A spokesperson issued an apology, saying: This case should not have happened and I hope other hospitals will be able to learn from the bitter lessons we have learnt.. The trust was accused of gross clinical negligence by the jury, who blamed the death on inadequate storage of drugs on the maternity unit ...

1 PhD Position available: Human Robot Interaction based on Vision. The key idea is to use visual cues to understand human intentions during a manual task, e.g. assembling object, preparing food, etc. By observing a human, a robot should be able to assist a human similar to a theatre nurse during a surgery. The robot observers and anticipates the next step. This needs an understanding of human tasks on a semantic level, consisting of actions applied to objects. An internal (semantic) action plan of such a process is needed ant the robot should be able to localize the current executed action within the task network and be able to learn new actions be observation. One approach could be, e.g. to link robot and human actions to symbols and vice versa.. 1 PhD Position available: Semantic 3D Scene understanding. Object detection in computer vision has made a significant progress due to the renaissance of neural networks and deep learning. The drawback of such approaches are still that huge datasets ...

A Wisconsin operating room nurses license has been suspended after she was caught allegedly working legally drunk at least twice, WGBA TV reported Tuesday.
So to start the day off, we got to the hospital about 6:30 am. First of all, hospitals bring up sad things for me, so I wasnt thrilled to be there in the first place. After some paperwork, and meeting with the surgeon, anaesthesiologist, and operating room nurse, Maisey was taken from us. That was one of the hardest things that I have had to do in my life. How was I supposed to send my child away with someone she didnt know and be put to sleep with out me? Well, I guess it is a common practice because I made Shaun ask if we were able to go with her, and the nurse kindly said, No. So we sent her off, I cried a little, and then we waited, and waited, and waited for what seemed an eternity. The surgeon came back about an hour later and told us that everything went great and that he thinks he got it all out. What a relief. Ten minutes later they brought Mais back to us. She was still pretty out of it and was having a hard time waking back up. She was really agitated and cried for a while. Who ...

On December 15th, 1998, I rushed my baby daughter to the hospital. She had gone in to heart arrest. This would be the 4th time in as many months, but this time as I handed her to the emergency room nurse I said, Its time. Shes old enough now. Please do the heart surgery. Shannon was now 4 and half months old. This time traffic was heavy and we cut in close. We couldnt use an ambulance because we live on the border between two provinces and the childrens hospital was on the other side. The ambulance wasnt allowed to drive her there. Thankfully, each time she had gone into heart arrest it happened at night. On a good night I could make it to the hospital in about 8 minutes. We had roughly 13 minutes to travel the 19.2 kilometers before brain damage would start to set in, so we had to leave as soon as we heard her stop breathing. Because of the urgency we had to leave our other 3 children at home alone. To make sure they were safe, we had enlisted a mini army of volunteers who were on the ...
The weather has been dreadfully cold and we are house bound with the flu. I got a call from school last Friday that my little one (11 y/o son) had a 104 temp. I nearly flipped out! None of my children have ever run fever much over 102. It scared me to death. I told the office to give him a double dose of Ibuprofen and sent Hubby (who was home--as most of you know he works out of town) to get him. I finished my case at the hospital (I am an operating room nurse and you just cannot jump up and leave at the drop of a hat) went home and retook his temp. Thank God it was down to 101.9!! We have been running from 100 to 103 since. Pediatrician says it is a fever virus. No other symptoms have presented except for loss of appetite and a little cough occasionally. Our school is full of it. 12 kids in his grade alone were out last week. He finally got hungry last night and today is fever was low grade , not over 100.3, so I feel like we are on the upside of this thing. Our doc told me it might last 5-7 ...
There is a stopping point in the North Carolina mountains called Pretty Place. Pull off the main road and follow a dirt one to a clearing and there stands an open-air chapel on the side of the mountain. Simple concrete benches encompass a stone pulpit. The area is open on all sides so you can see the breath-taking beauty of the scenery. There is a feeling of reverence about the place. People talk quietly, as though in church, in this wonderful place of solitary reflection.. At Easter time about twenty years ago, a group of friends and I decided to attend the sunrise service at Pretty Place. I had always wanted to go but never managed. I was an Emergency Room nurse and had to work on this particular Easter Sunday too, but worked it out to go to the service, and then go to work my shift. We got up about 2:00 a.m. to make the drive to Pretty Place. We arrived in the dark, parked, and proceeded toward the chapel. A huge gathering of people collected in and around the chapel. In darkness, a simple ...

Cervical fluid is linked to ovulation, and there are phases of different consistencies of cervical fluid (mucus) that follow the menstrual cycle. You can learn and chart patterns and correlate the types of fluid you see with your own cycle. Ovulation typically occurs following a stretchy clear fluid called spinnbarkeit that is very similar to uncooked egg whites in consistency. Vagina microbiome shifts, hormonal contraception, other pharmaceutical medications, stress, travel, sex, nutrition, hydration, and other factors can have an effect on the timing of ovulation and the quality of cervical fluid. When teaching fertility awareness, a basic principle is that the seed can only grow when watered (by fluid), so to speak, however in our complex modern world, our cycles and fluids are more easily disrupted, thus getting to know your different types of cervical fluid and the underlying principles of fertility awareness and cycle charting is your best bet in terms of correlating cervical fluids with ...

The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) has updated the position paper, Safe injection, infusion, and medication vial practices in health care (2016), which replaces the previous 2010 paper. The transmission of bloodborne viruses and other microbial pathogens to patients during routine healthcare procedures continues to occur because of the use of improper injection, infusion, medication vial, and point-of-care testing practices by healthcare personnel (HCP). These unsafe practices occur in various clinical settings throughout the United States and result in unacceptable and devastating events for patients. This position paper provides guidance on best practices for infection preventionists and other HCP.
Warfighters rely on an array of resources during their deployments, but the availability of safe, uncontaminated water and nutriments is paramount. Despite efforts by the military to supply troops with safe water and food, operations outside the Continental U.S. (CONUS) require sourcing of these provisions either locally or from nearby regional countries (See References 1 and 2 below). DoD-approved foreign facilities can pose safety risks due to quality control deficiencies and less robust food safety systems (See References 3 (as cited in 1) and 4). Prolonged expeditionary operations can lead to necessarily unsafe practices when warfighters must scavenge for water and foodstuffs from the environment. Besides unintentional or naturally occurring contamination, detecting the purposeful fouling of food or water by adversaries further underscores the need for the technology in this topic.. Currently, field detection of chemicals and pathogens in food and water is accomplished using devices or kits ...

When the resident came to examine me at around 1 in the morning, she looked inside and thought shed find that I was still closed. Unfortunately, when she did her physical exam, she found instead that I was open. They had said I was open less than a fingertip before and that it was common in women whod been pregnant. I asked if that is what she meant, she said No, you are 2.5 cm and I can feel your babys head. They admitted me immediately. I got in a wheelchair and they took me up to a room in Labor and Delivery. So, first we discussed my Oxy infusion reaction again ... he called in my infusion nurse (like I wouldnt tell him the truth or something? .. where did he get that from Dr. House?) and the 3 of us discussed what the reaction symptoms were and how they were resolved. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. (or like the Peanuts cartoon ... wah ... wah ... wah). My infusion nurse is a bit goofy like me so between the 2 of us, the doctor actually had a hard time not cracking a smile. I caught him a couple of times when he pretended to look down at my chart ... hed cracked a smile. So, he decided to write for the 25mg benadryl push at the beginning, with the dex ... and a second 25mg push at the half way mark next time to head off any reaction. But, he did call in all the infusion room nurses and manager to tell them that he wanted the crash cart in the infusion room when I was there! I said ... what?? When paramedics, emergency room nurses, and other first-line responders encounter someone experiencing a mental health crisis, they need to act quickly while making informed decisions. Iowa City recently collaborated with the Cal Poly DxHub to improve data sharing for when first responders are working with someone experiencing a mental health crisis where timely and accurate information is essential. Without knowing which services someone has accessed, it is difficult to determine the most helpful plan for support and also can require a lot of redundant paperwork completion for families. The DxHub team is working with Open Lattice, a secure, cloud-based data platform, and Iowa City to design a proof of concept for the idea called InterConnect to help bring public health, ambulance service, crisis center, law enforcement, and hospital data together to provide proper services and care. Nelson Morales, who was once known as Mr. Churrasco to his friends, now calls himself the luckiest man alive.. Mr. Morales (pictured above with his wife, Roxana Baron) discovered he was at high risk for a heart attack almost by chance, after co-workers urged him to take advantage of a low-cost cardiac calcium CT scan offered at many Baptist Health facilities. His study, performed at West Kendall Baptist Hospital, showed three blocked arteries - basically, a heart attack waiting to happen.. I had no symptoms, said Mr. Morales, R.N., an operating room nurse at the hospital who was 54 years old at the time. I had gained some weight in the past few years and my cholesterol was high, but Im active, I go to the gym and I never had a problem. Hes also a black belt in judo.. The cardiac calcium scoring test looks for calcium deposits in the walls of the hearts arteries, which can be a sign of heart disease, the longtime leading cause of death in the United States. The more calcium, the higher ...

OMG, I love the Angry Pharmacist but I had a horrid experience with my pharmacy of 10 years. They got students and a bunch of hot shot newbie Pharmacists who denied me my med for 3 days, and I had to go to the emergency room and be treated like a frickin drug addict. The emergency room nurse said Man, Ill need your med, when Im done talking you, he almost said BITCH! But then when I got in there finally, I saw a piece of black hair with the bloody root attached as I lay there withdrawing like an animal, and three black ants were making their way to it. Then Mr. Emergency room shit head comes in and treats me like a drug addict. He said, Ill get your STUFF lady, but dont do this again! OK, I wont let my blood pressure kill me doctor (168/100), or let the shakes or little fleas I see behind my eyes bother me, or the cramping because some new hot shot pharmacist decided I cant have my usual med cause Im 3 days early when they wrote it on the 19 and claimed I came in 3 days later, and ...
This was my first time at Riley by myself during a procedure. Anara was pretty entertaining with Versed (I will try to post video below). She talked about pancakes all day. After a while the request for pancakes turned into a drunken yell I want pakes! I want pakes! I want pakes! What Dr. Kaefer thought would be a 30 minute procedure ended up being about three hours (he is very thorough trying to remove all fragments). When I was called to the recovery room, Anara was completely wasted. The recovery room nurse had given Anara two doses of morphine - which was really odd since Anara should not have been in any pain. Anara took a nice long nap in post-op and woke up long enough to tell me that she wanted pancakes, dry heave and go back to sleep. We werent able to leave for quite a while because Anara kept vomiting. I really think this was more related to the morphine given than the anaesthesia. We went home and after a couple more rounds of puking, Anara was finally able to eat her pancakes and ...
