Aim: To show that the high relapse incidence of malocclusion characterized by anterior open bite is frequently due to an anterior tongue rest posture, an etiologic factor that has been largely overlooked both in conventional orthodontic treatment and in surgical treatment. Method: A maxillary fixed intraoral appliance with spurs was used to modify anterior tongue posture. Results: Research with this appliance in a large sample of anterior open bite patients demonstrated long-term stability postretention. Clinical cases using this method are presented. Conclusion: In the overall scheme of open bite treatment, therapy with intraoral spurs for the correction of anterior open bite has a wide range of application. World J Orthod 2001;2:219 231 ...
CM, a beautiful 10-year old girl, had an anterior open bite, caused by a tongue thrust disorder. The main reason for this disorder, what many practitioners fail to realize, is a small jaw and arch size, and a small airway, which prevents the tongue from resting in its proper position on the palate. Every time the child swallows, the tongue pushes forward between the teeth, and prevents them from growing down and meeting each other ...
The analysis of the results suggests that early treatment was able to intercept and reduce dentoskeletal open bite, in particular when it was caused by an altered function.. VCC alone [16] or associated with other devices [27, 28, 33, 34] produced an increase of the overbite. Although the same protocol of use and similar samples in the studies, some authors [27, 28] showed that VCC did not yield favorable skeletal effects, and others [16, 34] reported vertical control and decreased gonial angle probably because of greater compliance.. For the same reason, fixed palatal cribs (FPC; Q-H/C) showed a greater amount of overbite improvement compared to removable appliances [31-33].. On the other hand, RPC + VCC produced a greater improvement in overjet as a result of activations and adjustments.. The therapy with RPC depends on the patient compliance, but, in many cases, it provides a greater comfort than the FPC because it can be worn gradually and can be removed for meals and oral hygiene, which ...
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of MPDD on the sagittal angulation of maxillary molars in skeletal open bite subjects. Overall, it was found that MPDD was associated with a significant mesial angulation of the second and first molar roots with a concurrent simultaneous distal angulation of the associated crowns. The findings are clinically relevant as they allow clinicians to consider these associations when facing patients with a potential MPDD. Their treatment decisions could be affected based on the degree of third molar angulation and how the erupted first and second molars are distally angulated in such cases. Distal molar movement in class II malocclusions should be careful in such scenario as this type of movements tends to distally angulate molar crowns. The method utilized to diagnose maxillary posterior discrepancy used a radiographic visual assessment by two calibrated examiners (LEAG, AADC), where the sagittal maxillary length and the portrayed trajectory of ...

Computer aided design and computer aided manufacture has been involved in Dentistry for many years. Since the 1980s we have been trying to produce in-surgery porcelain restorations with considerable variation in success. Common criticisms of this technique have been poor fits, poor aesthetics and poor occlusal control. Dr Julian Caplan has been involved in developing techniques utilizing this constantly changing technology to overcome these short falls. He has now reached a position where he is able to create beautiful, well fitting multiple restorations that allow proper functional control and he achieves this in a single day. This lecture will concentrate on Cerec technology and how he has utilized this over the last 10 years to producing highly aesthetic smile makeovers in a day.. ...

PURPOSE: This is to evaulate the efficacy of orthognathic surgical aids to imporve the painful TMJ in Class II open-bite deformites. CASES: Four patients who had been sufferred from temporo-mandibular disorders with open-bite retrognathic deformities underwent orthognathic surgeries. The presurgical orthodontic treatment and conservative management for temporomandibular disorders could not be continued due to progressive pain loading on TMJs and muscle tenderness. Bilateral ramus oseotomy with semirigid internal fixation were followed for 2 years by radiologic changes including MRI, bone scan, clinical examination of jaw opening. pain(VAS) and occlusal changes. RESULTS: Open-bite deformites with painful TMJ showed DJD findings without reduction of disc and hot spots on bone scans. The surgeries helped pain reduction to VAS 0.5 from 8.0 and improved jaw opening to 45 mm. Hot spots of TMJ were decreased or disappeared in one year. There were no signs or evidence of openbite-recurrence. CONCLUSION: ...
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the Denture Frame Analysis. This adjunctive cephalometric analysis of the lateral headfilm was introduced in Japan, but no data exist for the Caucasian population at present. One-hundred-and-six Caucasians were randomly selected and assigned to one of four groups, according to their malocclusion: Angle Classes I, II, and III, and anterior open bite. Statistical testing showed significant differences among the four groups for most of the measurements investigated. The Denture Frame Analysis distinguished the different types of malocclusion, and evaluated skeletal and dental relationships. The occlusal plane aids in the determination of the objectives and limits of orthodontic therapy. ...
I am not your typical jaw-surgery-having blogger. By that I mean that, unlike most of my orthognathic patient peers, I havent been posting for the many months leading up to my surgery. As I mentioned before, its been almost exactly one year since this journey to fixing my jaw really began, and obviously a lot has happened in those twelve months pertaining to this upcoming surgery of mine. So bare with my as I catch you up and give a general timeline of how I arrived here, one week pre-op ...

The purpose of this study was to evaluate long-term dentofacial stability after bimaxillary surgery in skeletal Class III open bite patients. Twenty-three Japanese adults (5 males, 18 females) were randomly selected as the experimental group from the files of Tohoku University Dental Hospital according to the following criteria: (1) skeletal Class III malocclusion with anterior open bite, (2) simultaneous Le Fort I and sagittal split ramus osteotomies, and (3) complete set of cephalograms taken at predetermined intervals until 5 years after debonding. Based on the manner of maxillary surgical repositioning, they were divided into the following 2 groups: (1) impaction group of 13 subjects (2 males, 11 females) who had maxillary superior repositioning without rotation of the palatal plane, and (2) rotation group of 10 subjects (3 males, 7 females) who had maxillary repositioning with clockwise rotation of the palatal plane. These patients were compared to a control group of 11 adults (1 male, 10 ...

OBJECTIVE: To test the null hypothesis of no significant difference in terms of intraoral pressure curve characteristics assessed simultaneously at the subpalatal space (SPS) and the vestibular space (VS), during different oral postures, between four groups with either an Angle Class II/1 (II1), Angle Class II/2 (II2), anterior open bite (O) malocclusion, or a neutral occlusion control group (I). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Intraoral pressure recordings were performed simultaneously in the VS and SPS of 69 consecutive subjects (nII1 = 15; nII2 = 17; nO = 17; nI = 20; mean age/standard deviation 18 ...
Just wanted to add a few pics again. I know my teeth are on the move, I had to go in for a second time to have the same end wire clipped again (top right side of my mouth). I was burning through the wax pretty fast and quite honestly I just got sick of having to put it on and take it off to eat and brush my teeth so many times in a single day. Not to mention my whole cheek being cut up. I dont think Ill hesitate to go in going forward, they got me in within a half hour of me calling which was pretty awesome and I was only there for maybe ten minutes again. I have an appointment 1/26th so I thought Id save any questions I had for that rather than bother the one who clipped mine. Oh she also smoothed out one of the brackets in the back too with a tool. It feels a million times better and my mouth is already healing from the cuts. I like taking these pictures every two weeks or so because I tend to notice something new each time. This time I noticed that my bite is better since the wisdom teeth ...
At one time or another, anyone may pick up a bad habit. But there are some situations where a youngsters parafunctional (detrimental to health) habits can actually influence the development and function of his or her teeth, jaws and mouth. Some examples of these are persistent thumb sucking, tongue thrusting and mouth breathing.. The sucking reflex is natural in early childhood; it usually disappears between ages 2 and 4. But if it persists much later, the pressure of the digit on the front teeth and the upper jaw can actually cause the teeth to move apart and the jaws to change shape. This can lead to the orthodontic problem called "open bite," and may impair speech. An open bite can also be caused by the force of the tongue pushing forward against the teeth (tongue thrusting).. Mouth breathing - an abnormal breathing pattern in which the mouth always remains open, passing air directly to the lungs - is related to alterations in the muscular function of the tongue and face. I have to go back in for more models on 2/28th and I have to get my surgical hooks on the Thursday before the surgery which is 3/14th. So those are the days I have to look forward to now. As far as my teeth go, I just got some new wires in just after the new year on 1/4th. They actually hurt quite a bit but it felt good to get them cut nice and short since the other ones were cutting me up pretty badly. The wire they put in is still considered a "post surgery" wire so I still have no idea whats going on with that. When I was there the lady literally asked me if I still felt numbness and I asked from what and she said your surgery and I was like I didnt have it yet! So she had to go ask my ortho what the hell was going on but they didnt tell me why I was on the wire I was. I didnt bother asking Im just gonna let them do their thing ...

Since I started my private practice I have received a large amount of tongue thrust referrals. This is mostly due to the limited coverage of tongue thrust therapy through the school district. Where I come from - therapists are allowed to treat tongue thrust through the school district if the tongue thrust causes an articulation disorder. But they are not allowed to treat tongue thrust (or reverse swallow as it can be called) alone. This makes sense I guess - since an atypical swallow pattern doesnt really affect a childs ability to access an education like an articulation impairment does.. Anyway… all this exposure to tongue thrust has helped me perfect my techniques and my clients have had AMAZING success. Seriously. I love treating tongue thrust. It is simple, straight forward, and totally possible to fix.. But I would like to back up for a minute and talk about what a tongue thrust is exactly. I am going to explain it the way I like to explain it to the parents of my clients. I begin by ...

Does your child suck his or her thumb? A recent study in the European Journal of Orthodontics showed that about one third of four year old children suck their thumb. By the time these kids are six years old, half of them will quit. Why are orthodontists so concerned about thumb sucking habits? Thumb sucking often results in an anterior open bite and a posterior crossbite. An anterior open bite means that the upper and lower front teeth do not touch each other. A posterior crossbite means that the upper jaw is too narrow for the lower jaw resulting in the upper teeth not fitting properly with the lower teeth ...

Background: Pedicle screws are often used to stabilise the spine. They afford the benefit of a three-column control of the spine. The technique of pedicle screw insertion is familiar and has a well-documented safety profile during lumbar and thoracic spinal surgery. However, complications such as cerebrospinal fluid leakage due to pedicle screw misplacement, neurological irritation and pedicle penetration may occur. Therefore, knowledge of the dimensions of spinal pedicles is necessary for the fixation of pedicular screws to avoid possible complications. Aims: The aim of this study was to determine the maximal diameter and axial length of thoracic and lumbar pedicles in a homogenous African population using computed tomography (CT). This would establish normative data on the average size of pedicle screws that would be required during the surgery, hence maximising pull-out strength while reducing the possibility of revision of the pedicle screw placement. Methods: It is a retrospective study ...

Unlike allergic reactions to bee stings or wasp stings, where an allergic response can cause immediate death, this same response from a mosquito bite is very very rare. Instead, symptoms of an allergic response to a mosquito bite involve more significant swelling of the skin with sometimes very large hives or welts forming, more redness at the bite site, and extreme itching. These symptoms tend to last much longer than in non-allergic individuals, sometimes lasting two or three days. In more severe cases, blistering and bruising may also be the response. Overall, it is a much more uncomfortable and painful situation for the victim and a mosquito bite treatment becomes important. ...
Dental braces are used to correct the alignment of teeth, and their position with regard to a persons bite. Braces are used to correct malocclusions such as underbites, overbites, cross bites and open bites, or crooked teeth and various other flaws of the teeth and jaws.. Braces work by moving the teeth through the use of force. Force is applied by direction which leads to bone remodelling, where bone is created on one side by osteoblast cells and resorbed on the other side by osteoclasts.. ...
In this study, images of young adult men and women in the same age range as that of the evaluators were used. These images were manipulated to create different types of malocclusion: diastema, open bite, crowding, gingival (or gummy) smile, little exposure of teeth. Six groups of images containing six images each were formed and consisted of two experimental images (digitally manipulated) and four control images. These images were provided to the participants, who evaluated them by means of a questionnaire and a visual analog scale. The Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney, chi-square, and Fisher exact tests were used for data ana ...
Early evaluation provides both timely detection of problems and greater opportunity for more effective treatment. Prudent intervention guides growth and development, preventing serious problems later. When orthodontic intervention is not necessary, an orthodontist can carefully monitor growth and development and begin treatment when it is ideal.. By the age of 7, the first adult molars erupt, establishing the back bite. During this time, an orthodontist can evaluate front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships. For example, the presence of erupting incisors can indicate possible overbite, open bite, crowding or gummy smiles. Timely screening allows for treatment to be started at the optimum time and gives the opportunity for the following:. ...
Background: The present paper describes the general and oral manifestations in a 32-year-old man previously diagnosed with Apert syndrome. Clinical examination revealed features of acrocephalosyndactyly. The patient was found to have a flattened occiput with frontal prominence, abnormal contour of head (brachycephaly), shallow and downward slanting orbits with bilateral proptosis, hypertelorism, retruded midface, and prognathic mandible.Dental anormalies were present in a patient. Intraoral evaluation revealed normal mouth opening with anterior severe skeletal open bite and Byzantine-arch palate, maxillary alveolar ridges with crowding of maxillary and mandibular teeth, poor hygiene with heavy dental calculus and periodontal pseudopocket, dental caries, severe anterior open bite and crossbite, macroglosia and smooth tongue. The high prevalence of dental anomalies and ectopic eruption may suggest a possible etiologic relationship with the Apert syndrome. Keywords Acrocephalosyndactylia, ...

As used herein, the term patient shall be taken to mean both the human patient and animal patient. Many babies learn to swallow incorrectly by thrusting their tongues forward instead of drawing them back and moving them toward the top of the palate. This develops a habit which is not broken as the child matures, with the result that the child does not swallow correctly, but insists upon thrusting his tongue forward between the ...

There are several different kinds of malocclusions. One common type of malocclusion is the underbite. In an underbite, the lower jaw is extended out further than normal, causing them to be in front of the upper teeth. The opposite of an underbite is an overbite, another common type of malocclusion. An overbite is when the upper front teeth are extended out over the lower teeth, which can sometimes make it so that the lower teeth bite into the roof of the mouth. Other common malocclusions include excess spacing and crowding, crossbites, upper front teeth protrusion, open bite, and more.. How each type of malocclusion is treated depends on the individual patient. In most cases, the earlier our Fountain Valley pediatric dentist begins treatment the better, so that we can ensure smoother tooth and jaw development for your child as they grow older. Some common treatments include: braces, retainers, tooth extractions, and more. Again, the treatment will depend on your childs individual situation and ...
