GUELPH - Ontario is delivering on its commitment to end hallway health care and build a connected and sustainable health care system centred around the needs of patients. The province is introducing Ontario Health Teams, a new model of care that brings together health care providers to work as one team.. Today, Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, was at the Guelph-Wellington Paramedic Services headquarters to announce the Guelph and Area Ontario Health Team as one the first 24 teams in the province to implement a new model of organizing and delivering health care that better connects patients and providers in their communities to improve patient outcomes. Through an Ontario Health Team, patients will experience easier transitions from one provider to another, including, for example, between hospitals and home care providers, with one patient story, one patient record and one care plan.. This is an exciting time for health care in Ontario as we finally break down the ...

Ontario Cancer Institute is one of three research institutes comprising the University Health Network. It is located at Princess Margaret Hospital. The Ontario Cancer Institute (OCI), Canadas first dedicated cancer hospital, opened officially and began to receive patients in 1958, although its research divisions had begun work a year earlier. Because, at that time, a stigma was associated with the word cancer, the hospital was soon renamed the Princess Margaret Hospital, although the whole operation was called the Ontario Cancer Institute incorporating the Princess Margaret Hospital, or OCI/PMH. Clinicians usually preferred the hospital name, while the scientists used OCI. Cancer research is the priority at the Ontario Cancer Institute, one of three research institutes comprising the University Health Network. Researchers here employ state-of-the-art tools in genomics, proteomics, structural biology, molecular biology, biophysics and the behavioural sciences. ...
Patients and databases. All Ontarians between 65 and 100 years old who were prescribed parenteral vitamin B12 between July 1995 and June 1996 were identified in the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) database. The ODB database records the drug and the prescription date for each claim.. Resources used for parenteral and oral regimens. To measure resources used to administer parenteral B12 to these patients, we identified all physician claims for an intramuscular injection (fee codes G372 and G373) recorded in the Ontario Health Insurance program (OHIp) database for the year following the B12 prescription. The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (and its database records) covers almost all physician services. To avoid including injections for other reasons (eg, allergy testing by clinical immunologists), only those performed by family physicians and internists (as identified by the Registered Physicians Database) were included. Because vaccinations are claimed using a separate code, intramuscular injections for ...
The purpose of this study was to identify the obstacles and issues Iranian immigrants faced in accessing health care services as seen through the eyes of Iranian health care professionals and social workers in Greater Toronto Area, Canada. Three major themes emerged from the study: language barrier and lack of knowledge of Canadian health care services/systems; lack of trust in Canadian health care services due to financial limitations and fear of disclosure; and somatization and needs for psychological support.. In this study, all participants were immigrants, bilingual, and identified themselves as Iranian- Canadian. They were familiar with their patients culture, sensitive to their values, norms and expectations. Although the educational background of each participant was different, they shared some noteworthy similarities. More than half of the participants completed their education in Iran, and received their professional designation in Canada and were therefore familiar with the Canadian ...

CORNWALL - The city is jumping on board an Eastern Ontario project to close the gaps in cell coverage and broadband capacity.. The Eastern Ontario Regional Network made its pitch to city council Monday night for it to get on board the $213 million project. Thats $71 million each from the federal and provincial governments, $61 million from the cell phone carriers and the private sector, and $10 million from municipalities under the Eastern Ontario Mayors Caucus and the Eastern Ontario Wardens Caucus.. Right now, there is about 18 per cent of Eastern Ontario that has no cell coverage and 16 per cent that has inadequate coverage. This project would bring that down to less than 1 per cent and there would be 5G coverage.. Jim Pine, the project co-lead with the Eastern Ontario Regional Network (EORN), spoke with Cornwall Newswatch shortly after council decided to chip in its $296,464 share to the project.. We are really appreciative of city councils decision to financially support the mobile ...

November 14, 2016 (Toronto) - As part of World Diabetes Day, the Ontario Association of Optometrists (OAO) wants Ontarians to get their eyes checked.. From cataracts to glaucoma, diabetes can very seriously affect every part of the eye, said Dr. Jeffrey Guthrie, optometrist and President of OAO. Worst of all is diabetic retinopathy, which occurs when the tiny blood vessels in your retina become weak and leaky. Without treatment, diabetic retinopathy can result in permanent vision loss.. Early detection of diabetic retinopathy is essential to successful treatment, so that people living with diabetes can avoid the serious impacts that vision loss will have on their lives. Regular comprehensive eye exams with an optometrist are necessary to detect the condition before vision loss occurs, because retinopathys early stages are symptomless and damage may be irreversible. In Ontario, comprehensive eye exams for people living with diabetes are covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), a ...

Disparity in bariatric surgery across Canada likely reflects varying priorities and policies between provinces. For example, higher surgery rates in Quebec may be the result of the pioneering work in bariatric surgery at Laval and McGill universities. In contrast, a more recent surge in bariatric surgeries in Ontario with a $75 million investment in the Ontario Bariatric Network was largely driven by the urgent need to repatriate the rising number of Ontario residents who leave the province to receive surgery in the United States, with the costs of the operation for these patients covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (1660 in fiscal year 2008/09).7 Despite this increase, restricted access to bariatric surgery across Canada still results in wait times that may exceed several years, with substantial health and economic consequences for patients living with severe obesity.6. Given that the benefits and cost-effectiveness of bariatric surgery are well established, one can only speculate as ...

The wind industry insists there are no problems with noise or health, yet the wind industrys land lease agreements contain clauses in which the land owner could be sued if they complain about wind turbine noise or health effects. These land lease clauses indicate the wind industry knows there is a problem with noise or other health effects and that it could affect homes that are close by. What can we expect from a survey? It will be difficult to exclude land lease owners and if the industry or government conducts the survey what results would be expected? Shouldnt an effort be made to understand what is causing the health problems to those who find it difficult to live close to the wind turbines next to their homes? It may be those people are sensitive to something that is far more dangerous than first imagined.. ...
To control the arctic variant of rabies virus in red foxes, 332,257 bait doses containing live, attenuated Evelyn-Rokitnicki-Abelseth rabies vaccine were distributed in greater metropolitan Toronto during 1989-1999. Human and pet contact with bait was minimal, and no adverse reactions to the vaccine were noted. Significantly fewer rabid foxes were found during the 17 years after fox baiting (5 cases during 1990-2006) than in the 17 years before (96 cases during 1973-1989). The last report of a rabid fox in metropolitan Toronto was in 1996 (reporting period through September 2006), which confirms that distributing oral rabies vaccine bait is a feasible tactic for the control of rabies in foxes in urban environments.

Since 1982 the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) has offered a certification program in emergency medicine for family physicians. To obtain this designation, most individuals do an extra year of emergency medicine training, while others choose the practice-eligible route by accumulating emergency department experience and then taking a clinical competency examination. According to the college, this program aims to help family physicians deepen their skills in an area of clinical practice that is integral to family medicine.1 As such, the emergency medicine certification - CCFP(EM) - is viewed as a complement to family medicine training.. To what extent does this ideal hold true? Do family physicians with emergency medicine certification actually practise family medicine, or do they instead practise as if they were emergency medicine specialists? To answer this question, physician billing data from the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) were examined. The OHIP database contains ...
Under the Ontario Health Insurance Act, OHIP partly covers podiatric assessments and treatments provided to patients to a maximum of $135 annually.. Under the Healing Arts Radiation Protection Act, podiatrists may order and take x-rays for diagnostic purposes.. Podiatrists practise primarily in private clinics in the community, although a few also act as consultants in public and teaching hospitals. Podiatrists also provide foot care services in some long-term care homes, in some retirement homes and some podiatrists make house calls to patients who are homebound.. Since the Ontario government reaffirmed its adoption of the chiropody model 35 years ago, most comparable jurisdictions have transitioned or are transitioning to a podiatry model. In the UK, the profession is called podiatry and practitioners may call themselves either podiatrists or chiropodists, but a chiropody scope of practice persists. Members of the profession who complete additional education and obtain certification from the ...

Woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) in Ontario are a threatened species that have experienced a substantial retraction of their historic range. Part of their decline has been attributed to increasing densities of anthropogenic linear features such as trails, roads, railways, and hydro lines. These features have been shown to increase the search efficiency and kill rate of wolves. However, it is unclear whether selection for anthropogenic linear features is additive or compensatory to selection for natural (water) linear features which may also be used for travel. We studied the selection of water and anthropogenic linear features by 52 resident wolves (Canis lupus x lycaon) over four years across three study areas in northern Ontario that varied in degrees of forestry activity and human disturbance. We used Euclidean distance-based resource selection functions (mixed-effects logistic regression) at the seasonal range scale with random coefficients for distance to water linear features, ...

Abstract Background Shrimp and house dust mite (HDM) allergies are common in Canadians. Often, both of these allergies occur in the same patient. This may be due to homology of tropomyosin or other potentially shared proteins. The aim of our study was to assess the frequency of house dust mite sensitization in a shrimp allergic Canadian population. Methods We undertook a retrospective chart review of shrimp allergic patients at an outpatient allergy clinic in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. Our primary endpoint was to assess for presence of HDM sensitization in this population. Patients were categorized into approximate quartiles. We assessed the severity of the shrimp reactions, correlated shrimp skin test size to HDM skin test size, and measured the proportion of patients with atopic symptoms. Results We identified 95 shrimp allergic patients who were tested for house dust mite. 86 (90.5%) of these patients had a positive skin test to HDM. Patients with a shrimp skin test ≥5 mm were 5.31 times ...

What producers can do to prevent introduction and reduce transmission. Slowly progressive illnesses like Caprine Arthritis-Encephalitis (CAE) in goats are major production limiting diseases that can be a source of significant stress and economic loss for farmers.. Once an animal has the CAE virus, it results in a persistent, lifelong infection. Most goats dont show any symptoms but can be carriers, which means they can transmit the disease to other animals in the herd. There is currently no treatment or vaccine, and the prevalence across Ontario is unknown.. Thats why Ontario Goat has recently partially funded two research projects at the University of Guelph focused on learning more about the disease, its prevalence and how it behaves on Ontario goat farms.. Determining CAE prevalence. A preliminary study of 45 randomly selected Ontario goat herds - 30 dairy goat breeders and 15 meat goat operations - was carried out in 2012 to determine how widespread the CAE virus infection is in the ...

06 January 2012 Toronto - The Ontario Superior Court has ruled that foreign parent tobacco companies must remain as defendants in the Ontario Governments $50 billion medicare cost-recovery lawsuit against the tobacco industry. This means the Ontario government lawsuit may proceed against foreign tobacco companies in addition to their Canadian subsidiaries. The lawsuit was initially launched in 2009 to recover health care costs due to tobacco-related illnesses, however several of the companies named in the court case applied to be removed from the lawsuit. With this ruling, that application was rejected.. Foreign companies, such as British American Tobacco and Philip Morris International, had brought a motion seeking to be removed as defendants. The ruling on the motion was rendered earlier in the week, and was announced today by Ontario Attorney General John Gerretsen.. This is great news and a significant defeat for the tobacco industry, says Rob Cunningham, lawyer and Senior Policy Analyst ...

Situated adjacent to CFB Trenton, The National Air Force Museum of Canada presents visitors with a fascinating and commemorative collection of military aircraft representing several critical timelines throughout the Canadian Forces proud heritage. Aviation history is most certainly an important part of Canadas past - and the Air Force Museum provides a series of amazing exhibits, interactive displays including the star of the show - a fully restored Handley Page Halifax Bomber.. I first saw the Halifax bomber in the late 90s shortly after being rescued from the bottom of a lake in Norway - where she had previously rested since being shot down during the Second World War. At the time, the Halifax was a rusty framework that was barely recognisable. After seeing the finished project, I cant help but reminisce about my grandfather: the late Herbert E. Hector (Sgt. Retd). He, (and countless other Canadian grandparents) served as an airframe technician during the War - and would patch up Halifax ...
Technical Implementation of Ontarios Phosphorus Removal Programme B.I. BOYKO, Senior Sewage Engineer J.W.G. RUPKE, Sewage Engineer Research Branch Ministry of the Environment Province of Ontario Toronto, Ontario INTRODUCTION The Province of Ontario is presently involved in a five-year programme to control phosphorus discharges from more than two hundred existing wastewater treatment plants serving some 4.7 million persons. In order to implement this programme, it was necessary to develop methodology that would allow the prediction of prime coagulant best suited for phosphorus removal at any particular treatment facility and to determine whether the chemicals used for phosphorus removal would have any physical or process effects on present wastewater processes, facilities, methods of sludge treatment, and subsequent sludge disposal practices. A Research programme, funded under the Canada/Ontario Agreement on the Lower Great Lakes, was subsequently undertaken using jar testing techniques as a ...

The 2014 riding season in Ontario was notable for also being the most deadly one in years, with 32 Ontarians perishing in motorcycle crashes all year. As Summer winds down, a sobering statistic shows that 2015 is on course to be an even worse season. To date, 29 have died on Ontario roads already this year.. The Ontario Provincial Police are reminding motorcyclists to practice defensive riding to protect themselves from motorists who may not see them and always be ready to react to another motorists mistake.. Sharron St-Croix, Executive Director of the Rider Training Institute reinforces that warning, saying that We as riders need to understand that riding within the rules of the road will not always keep us safe, we have to ride tactically. We need to ensure that we are seen. Noting that the worst interaction between bikes and cars comes when a car is turning left, St-Croix suggests that there are strategies such as changing position within a lane to ensure that a rider is not camouflaged by ...

KINGSTON - Queens University researchers Stephen C. Lougheed, Peter Van Coeverden de Groot and Graham Whitelaw have been awarded $9.5 million in total partner cash and in-kind contributions - including $2.4 million from Genome Canadas Large-Scale Applied Research Project competition - to monitor impacts of environmental change on polar bears.. The project, entitled BEARWATCH, will combine leading-edge genomics and Indigenous traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) to develop a non-invasive means of tracking polar bear response to climate change.. The polar bear is an iconic animal that has seen its habitat and ecology markedly impacted by climate change, says Dr. Lougheed, the principal investigator on the project. Based on non-invasive work we have done over the last decade with our colleagues at the Hunter and Trapper Organization (HTO) in Gjoa Haven in Nunavut, we viewed this funding call as an exceptional opportunity to work with Inuit of the Arctic to achieve more informed insights, via ...

This isnt the first time a Facebook group has caught the attention of Canadian politicians (its also not the first time this Ontario government has proposed controversial driving laws). Over the past year, a Facebook group, created by Geist, protesting proposed copyright legislation, was mentioned repeatedly by the opposition in federal parliament. This time, the government itself is bringing an online protest to attention. The idea of Facebook consultations drew some criticism in the comments on Geists post -- why should the government conduct its business on a proprietary, privately owned silo? But Geist isnt suggesting that the government rely on Facebook or any one service, just that they could make use of services that people are already using. Facebook is especially relevant for legislation affecting young voters. In an earlier column, Geist notes that it takes more than just an if you build it, they will come approach. Governments could broaden their online consultation strategies ...

According to the American Civil Liberties Union, which is aiding Windsor in her suit, this is the first federal appeals court ruling to state that government discrimination against gay people deserves heightened judicial review.. The appeals courts ruling comes three weeks after oral arguments were heard in the case. Windsors case reached the 2nd Circuit Appeals Court after a federal judge sided with Windsor in June, ruling that the government must refund the more than $363,000 in taxes paid by Windsor following the death of her wife, Thea Spyer. Windsor is suing to recoup about $363,000, federal estate tax she was forced to pay on her inheritance from Spyer. The federal government does not tax inheritances that pass from one spouse to the other, but because of DOMA the federal government has refused to recognize Windsor and Spyers marriage.. In a statement, Windsor applauded the ruling as striking down a law that violated the fundamental American principle of fairness that we all ...
