Background - The prevalence of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use and the modalities used by pediatric oncology patients vary widely across studies. In addition, the changes in the use of CAM over the course of treatment are understudied. Thus, this study aimed to explore (1) CAM use by pediatric oncology patients in relation to specific time intervals and (2) communication about CAM use between parents and oncologists. Methods - This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted among parents of children diagnosed with cancer at a Swiss pediatric hematology-oncology center by means of an online questionnaire. Questions were related to their childs CAM use over different time intervals, sources of information about CAM use, and communication with the oncologists. Results - Among 140 respondents, CAM was used by 54.3% of patients before diagnosis and 69.3% of patients after diagnosis. During each defined time interval, between 50 and 58.8% of the patients used at least one CAM. ...
Objectives: To determine the influence of family, peers, school, and physicians on exercise in pediatric oncology patients and evaluate the barriers to physical activity levels in this population. Methods: A search of PubMed and Google Scholar resulted in 12 related articles. The articles were assessed for the influence of school systems, family, peers, self-efficacy, and physicians on exercise. Additionally barriers and interventions to physical activity were also assessed. Limitations and research methodologies of each article were also evaluated. Results: Many school systems were unsure of expectations in regards to physical activity for their returning students with cancer. Most schools acknowledged willingness to increase exercise for these students; however, there is a communication gap between the medical field and the school system on what expectations should be. Family is associated with increased physical activity levels and healthier diets in this population with children preferring mothers

This article reviews the accumulated results of clinical and laboratory studies performed with these agents at The Johns Hopkins Oncology Center. In a phase I clinical and pharmacology trial of topotecan given as a 30-min infusion daily for 5 days every 3 weeks, profound neutropenia precluded dose escalation above 1.5-2.0 mg/m2 per day, the maximum tolerated dose (MTD). The daily ×5 schedule has been developed further with dose escalation using granulocytecolony-stimulating factor support in patients who have kidney or liver dysfunction and given in combination with cisplatin. In addition, a phase I trial of topotecan given as a 5-day continuous ...

To be clinically useful, an instrument assessing health-related quality of life (HRQOL) should be easy to understand and quick to answer. Few instruments have been designed to be short, simple, and easily understandable by patients from all educational levels. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of a brief general instrument developed to assess HRQOL. Results from a preliminary study regarding the initial development of the Barretos Short Instrument for Assessment of Quality of Life (BSIqol) with 80 cancer patients are presented. Out of all the patients, 59 completed the BSIqol on two occasions in order to evaluate the reproducibility test-retest. Validity analyses were done comparing scores from BSIqol with EORTC QLQ-C30 and Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS). In addition, BSIqol scores were analyzed in function of ECOG-PS, work activity, and financial income. BSIqol demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbachs α = 0.79) and adequate test-retest

On Marathon Monday, April 18, one MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC) patient reached another milestone in her recovery from cancer. Kristin Santanello, age 19, became the first MGHfC patient to join the hospitalÕs marathon team. Santanello completed the race with a time of 5:08:06 and raised more than $14,500 for the MGHfC Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Unit, the same program where she is still a patient in remission.. Santanello was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia when she was 5 years old. The disease was caught early, and after two weeks of intense chemotherapy, she was in remission. She continued to receive chemotherapy treatments for two more years, and the cancer has remained at bay. During her treatment, her father, Dan, decided to run the Boston Marathon to raise awareness of his daughterÕs illness. TIMELINE: CONTINUOUS. The LFCT BAG OF HOPE Project was initiated in 2010, when it became very clear, after numerous visits to paediatric Oncology Wards, that there is a desperate need for support to the Child with Cancer AND the bedside care-giver, which is usually the childs Mother.. Once a Child is diagnosed with Cancer, they and their parent/carer are often immediately whisked from whichever rural/small hospital at which the child has been diagnosed straight to a hospital with a paediatric oncology ward without even having time to return home to pack.. This results in Children with Cancer in hospital wards without pyjamas that fit, no comfort items like a soft toy and a warm blanket, no toiletries, no educational toys, no treats and no activities to enjoy when feeling well enough.. Mothers find themselves in the same position, and they literally live in the ward, eating, sleeping upright in a chair and bathing in the ward wash basins. They have no sanitary products, no clothing, no ...
The care shown to Nguyen Thai Dang since he first came to the oncology ward of the Princess Alexandra Hospital in 2018 for chemotherapy to treat leukemia, ended in him nicknaming the PA The Hilton of Hospitals and becoming not only a survivor but a champion of the hospital and its staff. Thai, as he is known to his friends, checked into the PAs Oncology ward at the request of haematologists on October 22, due to his white blood cell count sliding downward for a matter of months. There was a trial treatment organized by PA Hospital and Norvatis Pharmaceutical that would allow me to have a path to treatment that would be less of a burden to Australian taxpayers. Looking at the results of my last blood test, I decided to get on the trial. It was a win-win for both: I would get the treatment and the medical science team could get new weapons to fight the Leukemia disease, Thai says. Thai spent around 6 weeks, in the PA including stints in both Oncology, ICU and Ward 3C and multiple trips to the ...

This studentship would address the impact of comorbidities of cancer patients on access to specialist cancer treatments (especially, specialist multimodal treatments), safety (especially, side-effects), patient experience (patient-reported), and patient-centred outcomes (cancer progression, survival) in an era of ongoing top-down re-design of cancer services, which creates an increasingly complex structure of cancer services provision.. The student will mainly use existing data as we will analyse linked national data sets, including national cancer registry data, radiotherapy and chemotherapy data, and Hospital Episode Statistics. These analyses will build on our extensive experience in modelling patient mobility and care pathways, and short and long-term patient outcomes at a national level.. A key innovative element is the use of data from geographic information systems for the purpose of location-allocation and patient-choice-and-demand modelling.. The student will have access to detailed ...

Febrile Neutropenia. Emerging Pathogens Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE). VRE has been a concern in an era where some institutions have been using more commonly vancomycin or teicoplanin as part of an empiric regimen protocol. Other risk factors include duration of neutropaenia and antibiotic therapy, with ceftazidime or amikacin in particular 39. Outbreaks with VRE have been described in paediatric oncology units with associated deaths 40. Patient to patient transmission on an oncology unit is an important recognised factor in the development of outbreaks. Therefore, barrier isolation associated with a restricted used of glycopeptides have been key in decreasing colonization of patients at risk 39,41. The emergence of VRE also illustrates the difficulty of trading off the risk to the individual patient and society (or at least the oncology unit). A balance is required to give maximal benefit of broad spectrum coverage to the individual and the wider benefit to the unit as a whole, by ...

When I held our first grandchild in my arms, I broke down, admits Jim Deupree, who is known for his calm and quiet strength.. After Jim was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2004 at age 54, he and his wife, Jill, prayed he would live to see their children graduate from college, marry and one day start families of their own. Their fears for the future were compounded when Jims beloved older sister, Carole, who had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma before Jim, lost her own battle with the disease in a few short years. And so the Deuprees considered all of the milestones Jim has experienced as gifts made possible by the stem cell transplants overseen by ocologist-hematologist Stephano Tarantolo, MD, in 2004 and 2014.. They are grateful for the care and support of the entire Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center team and for each warm welcome received when Jim has returned to the Methodist Hospital Oncology Unit, where Jill said, The nurses treat us like old friends. heres the story: robyns friend casies son, eli, was there for treatment in 2012 for a rare form of retinoblastoma. he was diagnosed with it just before christmas. he was two. after six months of chemo and radiation therapy at the UI oncology center, i am so excited to say he was declared cancer free! hes been cancer free for six months now. casie + eli received such loving care and support from the staff and families at the center, and consider everyone there family. its truly the happiest ending possible for such a scary time. on their last trip to the center for elis routine testing, casie noticed that the grab a hat bin was empty. these knit beanies are so essential in these centers. due both to the hair so loss common with chemo as well as the side effects of the treatments, these kids need all the warmth they can get. she asked about it and learned that these bins are nearly always empty hospital-wide. no amount of donations can ever keep up with the flood of kids that come through ...

Brayden was born premature on January 4th, 2012. After a 54 day stent in the NICU, he finally came home. On his 1st birthday we were told that he had a brain mass. After further scans and a biopsy we were given a diagnosis of a Grade II Bilateral Thalamic Astrocytoma on March 1st, 2013. Chemotherapy is the first line of treatment, although it will not be curative. His protocol consists of Carboplatin and Vincristine, and will last for one year. Brayden is too young for radiation. There is currently no cure. We take each day one at a time and do our best to enjoy Brayden while he is here with us. When your child is diagnosed with cancer, life is magnified. In her case they felt that the Anisicoria was either a symptom of this Cancer, or a harmless birth defect. After a few days of testing at UTMBs pediatric oncology unit, we found she was clear. It was horrible to go through that, and Id be lying if I didnt admit that I felt like it was payback for whatever it was I had not done right in my early 20s pregnancy. The ward, like the rest of the oncology unit is brand new and part of the redeveloped Box Hill Hospital and I have to say it is wonderful to be treated in something so new, clean and with all that is needed. I was there for around 4 and a half hours in my section the 6 chairs (managed by two very good nurses) turned over at least twice and in at least 2 cases 3 times (mine obviously didnt!). A lot of people were there on long term monthly chemo getting just a single injection or drip for 30 mins. I felt lucky that my cancer is treatable in a very simple way. Sure it will be a hell of a ride for the next 9 weeks but all going well that will be it. Done and dusted ...
When an error or adverse event occurs, patients and families want to be informed. In this study of oncology patients, more than one quarter perceived an adverse event had occurred. While most were informed soon after the event occurred and given an explanation, fewer than half were given information on how to move forward with a complaint if they wished. Regular communication between patients and providers about actual or perceived adverse events may decrease the risk of it happening again ...

Neuroblastoma, a neoplasm of the sympathetic nervous system, is the second most common extracranial malignant tumor of childhood and the most common solid tumor of infancy [1]. The outcome of children with neuroblastoma is variable when the disease is categorized by age, stage, and clinical characteristics [2,3].. Efforts to improve the outcome of patients with neuroblastoma have focused on identification of risk groups based on clinical and biologic variables as well as intensification of therapy for high-risk cases [4]. Genetic characteristics of neuroblastoma can be divided into those with near-diploid nuclear DNA characterized by the presence of genetic aberration such as MYCN amplification,17q gain, and chromosome losses, and near-triploid tumors characterized by whole chromosome gains and losses without structural genetic aberrations, meta-analysis of prognostic markers show that MYCN amplification and DNA ploidy are of prognostic significance and currently are used along clinical factors ...

N2 - This article elucidates some of the opportunities and challenges of interdisciplinary collaboration in teaching, drawing on our participant observation as both instructors of anthropological methods and honorary students of marine ecology and geomorphology methods on a research training field course. We argue that interdisciplinary methods training offers educators opportunities for self-reflexivity, recognition of the taken-for-granted aspects of our knowledge, and improved communication of the value of our work to others. However, we also show how decisions about course structure can reinforce disciplinary boundaries, limiting inter-epistemic knowledge production; how one epistemological approach may overshadow others, hindering interdisciplinary learning; and ...

In a post on verfassungsblog.de I compare two reports on legal education and scholarship: one concerning Germany from the German Council on Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat), the other concering the United States from a task force of the American Bar Association. I find the Wissenschaftsrats decision to maintain an emphasis on doctrinal reasoning, while promoting interdisciplinarity and theory, to be prudent-especially for the German situation. By contrast, I find that the ABA report, in its emphasis on teaching skills and tools and implicit rejection of interdisciplinarity, to threaten what has always been a strength of law schools in the United States.. I am sorry to find that Rob Howse has taken offense, but I am also a little surprised by its direction. I expected some of my points to be controversial. But I did not think the basic claim that German legal scholarship excels more in doctrine while American legal scholarship excels more in interdisciplinarity would be one of them. ...
