Anyone who has a major health issue, even children with down s syndrome are going to be a drain on the health care system and the taxpayers.. As one who has had major health issues over the years, kept working (at a job you wouldnt believe), and overcome (or at least made a guarded truce with all of them), Id like to point out that Downs kids have been mostly sorted out of the mix before birth. Not that there arent a few of them around. Theres just not as many as a percentage compared to their statistical representation in the past.. Due to amniocentesis, they can be detected well before birth. After the determinations been made, its open season on em. Problem is, the tests are not always accurate (you can see whats coming). We were told that our daughter was Downs. Not that it made any difference to us, were not that sort of procreators. We thanked the Doc for the information, and my wife continued to gestate.. She went full term + and now our daughters 12, and an honor student in ...

I guess all those people before the 1930s who had lots of kids so they would have someone to take care of them in their old age were doing something inherently evil. And all those people who, instead of having kids, rely on social security, are actually being responsible. Ignoring for the moment (as we must) that Social Security only works if people go on having more than one or two kids to pay to support each retiree. Al, autonomy is one of the underlying memes of liberalism. It need not be the sole one, or even be found in every single liberals defining lexicon, to be recognized as distinctly liberal. The woman in Singapore need not belong to any left-leaning political or cultural group to have bought in to autonomy as a guiding principle that swallows up normal human morality. But I actually agree with you, in a sense: there is nothing about the story that could not have been given by some neo-conservative, as well. There are amoral people in other walks of life than explicitly liberal ...

Lies, damn lies, and statistics --- the mainstream media and most bloggers refuse to (or are unable to) to get the numbers correct on Social Security disability. Its no wonder they are all saying different things, and why many of us (including myself) were so confused about the accuracy of SSDI statistics. There also appears to be a lot of ideological spin in everyones reporting --- so Id like to help clarify a few things.. ...
The Trump campaign will release ads aimed at seniors this week, defending the presidents handling of the coronavirus pandemic and attacking Joe Biden on Social Security, Medicare, prescription drug costs, among other issues, in an attempt to shore up votes from the voting bloc that Trump carried in 2016 but has been losing ground on as election day nears.

Yutsano: Thank you for pointing that out, been thinking the same thing. On a simple two-circle Venn diagram, Perry occupies the space made when willful ignorance and sociopathy overlap. No shocker that Palin was out there assisting Perry (backhandedly) clarifying his thoughts on Social Security reform. She knows a kindred soul when she sees him, but still had to get the dig in. Funny stuff, were it not so insane.. I dont know if Perry can maintain the pace he has set for another three-plus months, at which point actual votes will finally be cast. That time frame is an eternity in our modern political and media culture. Then its just beginning. A lot goes in to maintaining that lead, including physical health, and the mental stamina needed to run the marathon. It is really hard to maintain any message consistency (which, BTW, the current President does as well or better than anyone else, when he wants to). It has to be doubly harder for an idiot such as him to stay on his targets and hit ...

Problem Statement. Workers compensation is part of the social safety net of programs that insure workers against income losses associated with both expected and unexpected life events. These programs also include unemployment insurance (for unanticipated job loss due to economic conditions), Social Security Disability Insurance (for permanently disabled people who have been in the workforce), and Social Security old age assistance (for people over retirement age), as well as programs specifically targeted to helping people pay medical bills (such as Medicare). In the United States, workers compensation emerged in each state as a political compromise in the early 20th century, when occupation-related deaths and disability were alarmingly common. Medical bills and lost wages resulting from a work-related injury can place an enormous economic and psychosocial burden on workers and their families, and losing a family member to a work-related death can have devastating consequences for the familys ...
Robert M. Ball has had a long career in the field of Social Security, dating back to 1939 when he joined the Social Security Board as a Field Assistant in a New Jersey field office. In 1942 Ball moved to Social Securitys headquarters in Baltimore where he quickly became the organizations chief staff expert on the issue of expanding coverage. Soon thereafter he accepted an assignment with the Boards Office of Training, where he displayed his natural gifts as a communicator and educator.. Leaving the agency briefly around 1945 Ball became a principal in an educational institute, and when the 1948-1949 Social Security Advisory Council was formed, Ball was tapped to be its Staff Director. This Council produced the watershed 1950 Amendments, which Ball had a major hand in shaping. Returning to the Social Security Administration (SSA) in 1949, Ball was made Assistant Director of the Bureau of Old Age and Survivors Insurance, and eventually, Deputy Director and Acting Director. In 1962, President ...
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) - Janis Mason is 94 and has been receiving Social Security benefits for nearly 30 years. Because she has outlived her savings, the monthly checks are her only source of income.. I always cross my fingers that the money can last the whole month, Mason said. To keep pace with the rising cost of living, the Social Security Administration announced a 1.7% benefits increase for 2013. This will give a $19 boost to the average benefit of $1,130 a month.. For some of the 56.3 million people who get Social Security - either because they are retired or disabled - the increase may not be enough to keep up with rising expenses.. According to a nationwide AARP Bulletin survey, Social Security is still an important planned or actual source of retirement income for adults, especially for those at least 50 years old. In addition, there is strong opposition to cutting Social Security as a way to help reduce the deficit across all age groups.

Despite years of debate on Capitol Hill, Congress has failed to act on Social Security reform. Any reform proposal with a fighting chance would likely include an increase in payroll taxes. Would the American public support such measures?. Recently, the National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI) surveyed 2,000 Americans to determine what reforms they would support in order to shore up Social Security. NASI found that 82 percent of respondents would support increasing taxes on working Americans, while 87 percent would support taxing the wealthy. Eighty-two percent of those respondents with incomes over $100,000 per year supported the idea of raising their own taxes. ...

Postscript: For those readers confused about the numbering of my COVID-19 related posts, I am calling todays blog post Part 5. Part 1 was last Tuesdays discussion of the potential upside of coronavirus panic. Part 2, though not labeled as such, was Professor Buchanans introspective column of last Wednesday on why he had hitherto been in denial about the looming disaster of the pandemic. Part 3, which was also not so labeled, was my Verdict column last week, in which I raised the possibility that because the response to the pandemic makes demands of the young to disproportionately benefit the old, it might be thought to present a problem of generational justice. Based partly on a parallel with Prof. Buchanans work on Social Security, I rejected the analogy. Part 4 is my lockdown/suspension column. Going forward, I will do my best to number these entries in a sensible way ...

Rhonda L Witte, BSc. The immune system is an elegant example of natures work. When functioning properly, it protects us against what is foreign and does not attack the self. Throughout an individuals life, changes occur within the immune system which make defense mechanisms less effective. Immunogerontology--the study of the aging immune system--is an up and coming field of research that will help build our knowledge, not only about the aging immune system, but also about the immune system in general.. The Immune System. Our immune system can be broken down into two interacting components: innate (natural) immunity and acquired (specific) immunity.1 Innate and acquired immunity differ regarding the effector cells and molecules that carry out their specific and essential functions. Natural immunity is composed of defense systems that are present before exposure to foreign macromolecules and infectious microbes. Physical barriers (i.e. the skin) phagocytic cells and eosinophils, a specific ...
According to Dr. Aronson the way we improve aging and aging medicine is to recognize that we need to respect old age and elderhood.
The National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) is effectively a national gun ban list and placement on the list precludes the ownership and possession of firearms. According to the Congressional Research Service, as of June 1, 2012, 99.3% of all names reported to the NICS lists mental defective category were provided by the Veterans Administration (VA) even though reporting requirements apply to all federal agencies. And that percentage remained virtually unchanged as of April 2013. Given the numbers, it is essential to ensure that the process by which the VA reports names to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for placement on the NICS list recognizes and protects the fundamental nature of veterans rights under the Second Amendment, Grassley wrote in the letter. Specifically, once the VA determines that a veteran requires a fiduciary to administer benefit payments, the VA reports that veteran to the gun ban list, consequently denying his or her right to possess and own firearms. ...
Downloadable! Chile offers an innovative approach to disability insurance within a multi-pillar social security system. The individuals retirement savings account is used as part of his disability insurance, but if he becomes disabled the account is topped up enough to finance a defined benefit annuity that pays 70% of the reference wage. This is accomplished primarily through the private insurance market, but with government providing regulations and back-up guarantees. The private pension funds and insurance companies that participate in the assessment process have a pecuniary interest in keeping costs low, unlike most public systems that are run by agencies without a personal incentive to contain costs. The individual accounts, used for old age retirement savings, help to finance the disability and survivors insurance as a joint product. This further keeps costs down and makes the system less sensitive to demographic shocks than a public pay-as-you-go system would be. However, pre-funding a defined
Ancestry acquired Rootsweb in June 2000 and has had full control of it ever since then. They could and should have identified and addressed security issues with passwords, etc. sometime within the last 17 years. They did not. - Why? I feel it is because they hold an aggressive approach to buying up or licensing and altering all formerly free aspects of the genealogy market. They didnt intend to keep the free sites around forever. They are working hard at monetizing every source out there that genealogists formerly had available to them for free. And yes in this day and age security issues are more serious than ever before, but they are busy monetizing! Now that they have more money from their profitable DNA testing and can afford hugely successful marketing campaigns they are off and running. Downloadable (with restrictions)! Using an overlapping generations model with endogenous but uncertain longevity, this article analyzes the effects of public old-age pensions on longevity choice and capital accumulation. When agents are not altruistic, increases in old-age pensions are longevity-neutral for golden rule economies and longevity-decreasing if interest rates exceed population growth, and saving effects are strictly negative. When agents are altruistic, longevity is independent of old-age pensions regardless of the interest rate--population growth relation. On the other hand, the longevity effect of a price subsidy on longevity extending expenditures or an advance in longevity extending technology is positive.(JEL H5, J1) Copyright 2005, Oxford University Press.
Specifically, the Larson bill would increase benefits immediately by about 2%, or roughly $300 per year for the average recipient. It would also accelerate future cost-of-living adjustments by using a Consumer Price Index that focuses more on the expenses that older Americans incur. In addition, the income levels at which Social Security becomes taxable would double for single filers and more than triple for joint filers, leading to greater after-tax benefits for retirees.. Perhaps most notably, Larsons proposal would establish a new floor on Social Security benefits for low-income workers. In addition to current benefits based on earnings history, a minimum benefit level equal to 125% of the poverty level would apply to everyone. That could result in substantial increases for the lowest-income tier of workers, even though Social Security benefits are already progressive in nature and replace a much higher percentage of earnings for low-income retirees than they do for higher-income earners. ...
WASHINGTON - Id like to start by welcoming my fellow Trustees to Treasury and to take this opportunity to thank the chief actuaries, Stephen Goss and Richard Foster, and their staffs for all their hard work.. Every year, the Social Security and Medicare Boards of Trustees issue reports to Congress on the strength of these two indispensable programs, and earlier today, the trustees held a meeting to complete this years financial review and to transmit the final reports. Millions of Americans rely on Social Security and Medicare for income and health care, and millions more will do so in the future. As todays reports make clear, these programs have the resources they need to fulfill their commitments to these Americans for years to come. But what these reports also reinforce is that we must take steps to keep these programs whole for the future. Pressures on these programs are mounting-Americans are living longer and the number of retirees is growing. The reports project that, when considered ...
Im the SSDI lawyer for when Social Security has denied you. You think they will help or do you think theyll turn you down again? Dennis Harmon, 205-342-3622 if you want help on Social Security Disability.
But I think theres another factor here, Al, that is starting to emerge, and somebody like Virgil Goodes district and places like Pennsylvania, Ohio, and other -- and that is that for an awful lot of people, for one half of the people on Social Security, Social Security is the one check that keeps them out of poverty. In John Sununus own state of New Hampshire, I think the people over 65 have the lowest percentage of people in poverty -- live in the poverty -- of any state in the union, 4.6 percent. You take out Social Security, and its 43.6 percent would be in poverty. And that -- the divide, Al, is between the haves, who say, Oh, lets have these private accounts, its wonderful, and people who are striving to get by, barely making it, and they look at Social Security as terribly important. And the idea of cutting those benefits is terrifying to them ...
If you are denied, you have 60 days, plus five days for mailing to appeal. Please note holiday and weekend days are counted in that 60 days and dont forget that some months have 31 days. In some areas of the country a Request for Reconsideration, form SSA 561. is required. Other areas currently skip this step altogether, although there have been rumors that it may be reinstated everywhere, and a Request for Hearing by Administrative Law Judge, form HA-501-U5, is completed.. In the following weeks, you can expect to get a letter explaining a little about the hearing process. A confusing part in this letter seems to be the explanation that Social Security will let you know 20 days in advance of a scheduled hearing; I frequently get calls from claimants who believe that there hearing will be in 20 days. The time it takes to get your hearing date depends on Social Securitys backlog. On June 20, 2011 Social Security issued a press release reporting that in May 2011 the average processing time for ...

Heavy Reliance on Social Security for Income Stream, A Solution Provides Guaranteed Lifetime Income. The story of saving for retirement today has two key factors: the industry you are in and your company size. Newly released retirement-readiness scores show workers in two blue- and gray-collar fields, Engineering and Protective Services, are better prepared for retirement compared to all workers - outpacing even white-collar employees - reports The State of Americas Workforce, a national study commissioned by the Indexed Annuity Leadership Council (IALC).. Yet overall, blue- and gray-collar industries are less prepared for their golden years, with eight of 11 scoring below average. The numbers are especially bleak for workers in the Food Preparation and Personal Care industries. The bottom-ranked industries show a barrier of access to employer-sponsored plans, which traditionally have provided accumulation and lifetime income opportunities.. In fact, more than one-third of workers who are ...
In 2007, CACV, a unit of debt collector SquareTwo Financial Corp., sued Timothy McCollough in state court in Montana to recover $3,800 on a credit card from J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., and another $5,500 in interest, collection costs and $480 in lawyers fees. Mr. McCollough wrote to the court in March 2008, explaining that he had been living on Social Security income since suffering a head injury in 1990. He says that he hadnt made any payments or used the credit card for more than eight years, putting his account beyond the states statute of limitations for debt collection. He asked the court to dismiss the suit, saying: This is the third time they have brought me to court on this account. Do I have to sue them so I can live quietly in pain ...
Finally, dont just think of a recession as a storm that your business needs to weather. Some industries do well during recessions. For example, 2009 was a pretty good time to run a discount retail business, an auto-repair business or a home maintenance store. Consumers never stop spending entirely, they just reduce their spending and shift it to more affordable choices. Instead of buying a new car, consumers are more likely to hold onto the car they have and maintain it. Instead of buying a new house, theyll fix up the house they already have. Instead of buying at Target, theyll shop at Wal-Mart.. Some very niche industries even grew dramatically during the last recession. There were a lot of HUD foreclosures that needed to be cleaned up and someone was paid to get those houses ready for sale. A lot of cars were repossessed during the recession and someone was paid to repossess those vehicles. A lot more people tried to get on social security disability (SSDI), which means it was a good time ...
