This research was aimed at investigating the essential oil production, chemical composition and biological activity of a crop of pink flowered oregano (Origanum vulgare L. subsp. vulgare L.) under different spatial distribution of the plants (single and binate rows). This plant factor was shown to affect its growth, soil covering, fresh biomass, essential oil amount and composition. In particular, the essential oil percentage was higher for the binate row treatment at the full bloom. The chemical composition of the oils obtained by hydrodistillation was fully characterized by GC and GC-MS. The oil from plants grown in single rows was rich in sabinene, while plants grown in double rows were richer in ocimenes. The essential oils showed antimicrobial action, mainly against Gram-positive pathogens and particularly Bacillus cereus and B. subtilis.

Whether inhaled or applied on the skin, essential oils are gaining new attention as an alternative treatment for infections, stress, and other health problems. However, in most cases scientific evidence is still lacking.. What are essential oils?. Essential oils are concentrated extracts taken from the roots, leaves, seeds, or blossoms of plants. Each contains its own mix of active ingredients, and this mix determines what the oil is used for. Others are used for their emotional value -- they may enhance relaxation or make a room smell pleasant. Orange ...

In order to investigate the effect of Pb on the growth, chemical composition of essential oil and accumulation of metals in this species, a pot study was conducted under glasshouse condition. Seeds were collected from natural rangelands of Lorestan province, Iran in summer 2016. Seeds were tested for dormancy breaking and were sown in total 12 of 5 kg plastic pots. After 120 days, when the plants grew to about 10 cm, the plants were exposed to three different lead nitrate [Pb (NO3)2] concentrations of control (0), 2 and 4 mM (as Pb1, Pb2 and Pb3), respectively. The results revealed that the shoot length decreased by 5.2 and 28.9% with the application of 2 and 4 mM lead respectively as compared to the control. The maximum value for the survival rate was obtained in Pb1 treatment. The Root Concentration Factor (RCF) and Translocation Factor (TF) values were all less than the desired unit. The
Essential oils are natural substances which can be used as natural conservators for foods. The present work aimed to evaluate biological properties of essential oil of Hyptis suaveolens and its effect on shelf-life of beef. The extraction was carried out by hydro-distillation. Antioxidant activity was determined by method of DPPH and FRAP. Antimicrobial activity was determined by the microdilution and agar diffusion methods. The sensitivity of eleven pathogen microbial strains was tested. The conservation test of ground meat using essential oil was carried out by monitoring the evolution of the microbial groups. Result showed that extraction yield of essential oil was 0.21% (m/v). The DPPH assay gave IC50 of 16.367 ± 0.0739 µL and was confirmed by the FRAP assay. The essential oil from H. suaveolens showed inhibitory activity on microbial strains. Biopreservation assay revealed a significant decrease of microbial charge during conservation time. Thus essential oil was successful in vitro

Little has been reported on the antibacterial activity of Myracrodruon urundeuva essential oil [27]. However, studies of other essential oils from the same plant (with different chemical compositions) have been tested against some of the bacteria herein tested. Among these, S. aureus [26, 35-37], E. coli [26, 36, 37], and P. aeruginosa [37], were inhibited by such extracts, showing the antimicrobial activity of M. urundeuva.. However, in this study, the M. urundeuva leaf essential oil showed antibacterial activity against all tested strains. Such activity is probably attributable to the terpenoids, since they represented a higher proportion of the constituents in the GC-MS and GC/FID analyses. Similarly, other studies attribute antimicrobial activity to these secondary metabolites due to being abundant constituents in these essential oils [16-20, 27, 28, 38].. This study presents α-pinene (87.85%) as the major constituent in M. urundeuva leaf essential oil. However, it is not known whether ...

Spotted wing drosophila (SWD, Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura), Diptera: Drosophilidae) is recognized as an economically important pest in North America and Europe as well as in Asia. Assessments were made for fumigant and contact toxicities of six Myrtaceae plant essential oils (EOs) and their components to find new alternative types of insecticides active against SWD. Among the EOs tested, Leptospermum citratum EO, consisting mainly of geranial and neral, exhibited effective fumigant activity. Median lethal dose (LD50; mg/L) values of L. citratum were 2.39 and 3.24 for males and females, respectively. All tested EOs except Kunzea ambigua EO exhibited effective contact toxicity. LD50 (µg/fly) values for contact toxicity of manuka and kanuka were 0.60 and 0.71, respectively, for males and 1.10 and 1.23, respectively, for females. The LD50 values of the other 3 EOs-L. citratum, allspice and clove bud were 2.11-3.31 and 3.53-5.22 for males and females, respectively. The non-polar fraction of manuka and

Scientific name: Lavendula Augustifolia. Lavender is perhaps the most well-known and least understood of the essential oils. Practically everyone knows that lavender is great for burns, but few understand that there are over 30 (some say 40) different species of lavender and that many of the lavender essential oils are not even lavender, they are lavenda essential oils (smell similar, very cheap to produce, and containing very few if any of the healing properties of true lavender). The best lavender essential oil is from true lavender plants (Lavendula Augustifolia, previously known as Lavendula Officinalis Vera {Vera optional}) grown at altitudes of 5,000 feet or higher. This is the truly universal oil, a natural anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial (being currently tested against MRSA), antimicrobial, hormone balancing, skin cell regenerating, diuretic, muscle feeding, histamine blocking, anti-fungal, and overall body tonic essential oil! A true, pure lavender essential oil will contain ...
The best way to use essential oils in the bath is to mix them first with salts or an emulsifier such as milk or sesame oil. Aromatic bath salts disperse the oils safely into the water, and milk and sesame oil emulsify the essential oil so that it disperses. Without salts or an emulsifier, drops of essential oils will float on the water and then get directly on the skin. Combined with the heat of the water, this can cause dermotoxicity, especially if the oils are of a heating nature.. Oils that should be avoided in the bath include spicy oils such as cinnamon oil, oregano oil, thyme oil, and tulsi; phototoxic oils such as citruses, especially bergamot oil; and those with specific irritant potential such as lemongrass oil.. The oils that are generally considered mild and safe for bath are lavender oil, clary sage oil, rose oil, geranium oil, frankincense oil, sandalwood oil, eucalyptus oil, and conifers such as cedar oil, fir oil, pine oil, pinon pine essential oil, spruce oil, and juniper oil to ...

In Europe, their use has evolved into three distinct methods of use - hopefully by understanding these, you can embark on your own journey of using essential oils as medicine.. Its crucial to see beyond what is commonly understood as aromatherapy in the U.S. The word often conjures images of aromatic spa treatments, with clients bathed in rose petals.. Really, aromatherapy is a major aspect of herbal medicine, with an incredible healing potential.. As aromatherapy ...
Essential oils are volatile and liquid aroma compounds from natural sources, usually plants. They are not oils in a strict sense, but often share with oils a poor solubility in water. Essential oils often have an odor and are therefore used in food flavoring and perfumery. They are usually prepared by fragrance extraction techniques (such as distillation, cold pressing, or Solvent extraction). Essential oils are distinguished from aroma oils (essential oils and aroma compounds in an oily solvent), infusions in a vegetable oil, absolutes, and concretes. Typically, essential oils are highly complex mixtures of often hundreds of individual aroma compounds. Agar oil or oodh, distilled from agarwood (Aquilaria malaccensis). The antifungal activity of Mentha piperita L. essential oil and its comparison with synthetic menthol on Aspergillus niger growth have been determined in vitro. The chemical compositions of essential oil of M. piperita provided from the aerial parts of plants grown in a village in Kerman Province in June 2012 were determined. The sample was cleaned and then dried in the shade. Essential oil was made by hydro-distillation method andanalyzed by capillary gas chromatography (GC) using flame ionization (FID) and capillary gas chromatography coupled mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The main oil content from the plants of M. piperita was 3.26% (v/w). Twenty three (23) compounds were identified in the essential oil of M. piperita, making 96.25% of the total oil. The major components were menthol (38.33%), menthone (21.45%) and menthyl acetate (12.49%). For study of antifungal activity, the essential oil was tested against
Nowadays, essential oils are recognized as safe substances and can be used as antibacterial additives. Salvia sclarea is one of the most important aromatic plants cultivated world-wide as a source of essential oils. In addition to being flavoring foods, Salvia sclarea essential oil can also act as antimicrobials and preservatives against food spoilage. Understanding more about the antibacterial performance and possible mechanism of Salvia sclarea essential oil will be helpful for its application in the future. But so far few related researches have been reported. In our study, Salvia sclarea oil showed obvious antibacterial activity against all tested bacterial strains. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericide concentration (MBC) of seven pathogens were 0.05 and 0.1 % respectively. In addition, Salvia sclarea oil also exhibited a significant inhibitory effect on the growth of Escherichia coli (E. coli) in phosphate buffer saline (PBS) and meats. After treated with Salvia ...
The present study aimed to investigate the acaricidal properties of six essential oils. They were extracted from some plant species (|i|Lamiaceae|/i| and|i| Myrtaceae|/i|) using the technique of hydrodistillation with the Clevenger apparatus. The chemical compositions of the essential oils under study were determined by gas chromatography–mass spectrometer (GC-MS). An Adult Immersion Test (AIT) and a Larval Immersion Test (LIT) were used to evaluate the acaricidal activity of these essential oils against the adults and larvae of|i| Hyalomma scupense|/i|. GC-MS analysis showed the major constituents of each essential oil: 25.49% of |i|α|/i|-thujone (lavender); 46.82% of carvacrol (oregano); 78.78% of carvacrol (thyme); 40.27% of 1,8-cineole (blue gum); 17.45% of p-cymene (river red gum); and 26.96% of 1,8-cineole (rosemary). The biotests on the essential oils revealed that they inhibit the reproduction of|i| H. scupense|/i| engorged females at a rate of 100 &
Essential oils of bay leaf, cinnamon, clove and oregano were tested in vitro and oregano essential oil in vivo, against two foodborne fungi belonging to the dominant mycobiota of stored rice, Fusarium culmorum and Fusarium verticillioides, collected from the Albuferarice-producing Mediterranean area near Valencia (Spain). Chemical composition was identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Essential oils presented a high percentage of oxygenated components: 78.8 % in bay leaf (eucalyptol 51 %); 90.3 % in clove (eugenol 89.8 %); 92 % in cinnamon (eugenol 60 % and eugenyl acetate18.3 %); 71.8 % in oregano (carvacrol 49.6 % and thymol 21.2 %). Monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes were: 18 % in bay leaf, 9 % in clove, 5 % in cinnamon, 25 % in oregano. This research showed that essential oils have a great potential to control both fungal pathogens. In the in vitro test, the essential oils of cinnamon, clove and oregano reduced fungal growth by 90 % and almost 100 %, being oregano the most ...

Photothermal techniques were used to study thermal diffusivity, thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity and specific heat of folded and non-folded citrus essential oils and their corresponding terpenes; the latter are derivatives of the folding process. Experimental results show that thermal properties of all citrus essential oils are comparable. However due to a decrease on D-limonene and other monoterpenes with the folding process, thermal properties of folded citrus oils are higher than those for unfolded citrus oils. Moreover, thermal properties of various citrus terpenes are lower than those of folded and unfolded citrus oils. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) reveals significant differences (p < 0.05) among means for thermal data with the folding degree and fruit type for citrus oils. Valued obtained in this work, most of them not available in the literature thus far, together with values expected to emerge from future photothermal calorimetric experiments, might be used in the modelling and ...

Background and objectives:Gamma-irradiation is used vastly for both decontamination and sterilization of natural products; but these high-energy rays can affect heat-sensitive essential oils. Methods: The oleo-gum-resin of Boswellia carterii (Burseraceae) was sterilized by γ-irradiation at dose 30 KGy. The essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of non-irradiated Boswellia (NIB) and irradiated Boswellia (IB) were analyzed by GC/MS and the changes were compared. The structure of octyl acetate as the major component and marker of B. carterii was confirmed by MS/MS. Results: Twenty-five compounds comprising 99.55% of NIB oil and nineteen compounds comprising 98.61% of IB oil were identified. Major constituents which were common for both oils were octyl acetate (52.67 % in NIB, 76.51 % in IB), 1-octanol (6.37 % in NIB, 5.19 % in IB), duva-4, 8, 13-triene-1,3α diol (5.52 % in NIB, 3.94 % in IB), verticiol (13.63 % in NIB) and verticillane type diterpene (5.4 % in IB) they made up 78.19% and 91.04% of

Human bladder cancer J82 cells were more sensitive to the pro-apoptotic effects of frankincense essential oil than the immortalized normal bladder UROtsa cells. In contrast, sandalwood essential oil exhibited a similar potency in suppressing the viability of both J82 and UROtsa cells. Although frankincense and sandalwood essential oils activated common pathways such as inflammatory interleukins (IL-6 signaling), each essential oil had a unique molecular action on the bladder cancer cells. Heat shock proteins and histone core proteins were activated by frankincense essential oil, whereas negative regulation of protein kinase activity and G protein-coupled receptors were activated by sandalwood essential oil treatment ...
Phenylalanine amonia-lyase (PAL) is one of the most important enzymes that plays a key role in regulationof phenylpropanoid production in plants. It catalyzes the first step of the phenylpropanoid pathway in whichL-phenylalanine is deaminated to trans-cinnamic acid. This step is significant for metabolic engineering andhyper-expression of the major phenylpropanoid, methyl chavicol. We followed gene expression andactivity of PAL in Ocimum basilicum L. at different stages of growth including seedling, beginning andmiddle of growth phase, budding stage and flowering, and their correlation with final concentration of phenylpropanoid compounds. The level of gene expression was monitored by semi quantitative RT-PCR andphenylpropanoid compounds were identified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). PALactivity was assayed using spectrophotometer. The results indicated that the level of gene expression andactivity of PAL enzyme are altered during the plant development, where the highest expression and

Saprolegnia parasitica Coker is the main agent of saprolegniosis, one of the most important causes of economic losses in the fish farming industry, affecting all developmental stages. In this work the activity of some essential oils are compared with the activity of their isolated chemical constituents (alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, phenols, and hydrocarbons) to evaluate molecular classes active against S. parasitica. This suggests potential new products to use against saprolegniosis. Sixteen commercial essential oils and 37 pure constituents were tested against a strain of Saprolegnia parasitica from cutaneous lesions of Perca fluviatilis Linnaeus, using a continuously agitated broth technique that allows both the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and the Minimum Lethal Concentration (MLC) to be evaluated. It was possible to evaluate the efficacy of each essential oil against S. parasitica in relation to its specific composition and the efficacy of its main constituents. Carvacrol (MIC of ...
