This study shows that the upwind flight of male H. armigera moths towards different odour sources is strongly influenced by previous odour experience. In wind tunnel dual-choice bioassays, moths that were fed in the presence of a single volatile showed a preference for that odour compared with a second volatile that they had not experienced. Moths with no experience of the volatiles did not differ in their relative preferences for either odour source from those exposed to volatiles without association with a food reward. The results demonstrate that associative conditioning influences preferences for host odours in foraging moths. Studies on the proboscis extension reflex (PER) in H. armigera have looked more closely at the nature of the pairing in this type of learning (Hartlieb, 1996).. Moths flew upwind to both odours in the absence of conditioning, which implies that an innate attraction to these odours exists. An innate preference for phenylacetaldehyde over α-pinene was demonstrated in ...
The mammalian olfactory system processes odorants presented orthonasally (inhalation through the nose) and also retronasally (exhalation), enabling identification of both external as well as internal objects during food consumption. There are distinct differences between ortho- and retronasal air flow patterns, psychophysics, multimodal integration and glomerular responses. Recent work indicates that rats can also detect odors retronasally, that rats can associate retronasal odors with tastes, and that their olfactory bulbs (OBs) can respond to retronasal odorants but differently than to orthonasal odors. To further characterize retronasal OB input activity patterns, experiments here focus on determining the effects of odorant concentration on glomerular activity by monitoring calcium activity in the dorsal OB of rats using a dextran-conjugated calcium-sensitive dye in vivo. Results showed reliable concentration-response curves that differed between odorants, and recruitment of additional glomeruli, as
I am going to discuss a couple interesting facts that affect dog urine odor removal. First what I call Odor Memory. This is when we (humans) smell a particular odor and our brain remembers it. For example urine. If we smell urine and it gets into our nose and brain then certain things like seeing the urine stain again will trigger that smell in out brain and we will smell the urine again even if the smell is not still there. This is a psychological odor that is not a real odor but our brains cant tell the difference. Sometimes we can just think of the smell and we will smell it. It happens with all types of smells. Most of us have had this happen. This affects removing dog urine odor because we can psychologically smell the odor even after we have removed it. Sometime we wnat someone else to test smell the area we have cleaned to see if the odor is gone.. The other interesting point is that on average women can identify 10,000 distinct odors and the average man can identify 5,000 distinct ...
Odor perception is a complex process involving the central nervous system and can evoke psychological and physiological responses. Because the olfactory signal terminates in or near the amygdala, odors are strongly linked to memories and can evoke emotions. The amygdala participates in the hedonic or emotional processing of olfactory stimuli.[45] Odors can disturb our concentration, diminish productivity, evoke symptoms, and in general increase a dislike for an environment. Odors can impact the liking for a person, place, food, or product as a form of conditioning.[46] Memories recalled by odors are significantly more emotional and evocative than those recalled by the same cue presented visually or auditorily.[47] Odors can become conditioned to experiential states and when later encountered have directional influences on behavior. Doing a frustrating task in a scented room decreases performance of other cognitive tasks in the presence of the same odor.[48] Nonhuman animals communicate their ...
Odors are highly evocative, yet how and where in the brain odors derive meaning remains unknown. Our analysis of the Drosophila brain extends the role of a small number of hunger-sensing neurons to include food-odor value representation. In vivo two-photon calcium imaging shows the amplitude of food odor-evoked activity in neurons expressing Drosophila neuropeptide F (dNPF), the neuropeptide Y homolog, strongly correlates with food-odor attractiveness. Hunger elevates neural and behavioral responses to food odors only, although food odors that elicit attraction in the fed state also evoke heightened dNPF activity in fed flies. Inactivation of a subset of dNPF-expressing neurons or silencing dNPF receptors abolishes food-odor attractiveness, whereas genetically enhanced dNPF activity not only increases food-odor attractiveness but promotes attraction to aversive odors. Varying the amount of presented odor produces matching graded neural and behavioral curves, which can function to predict ...
Disease. Some diseases can cause bad body odor. One of the most common diseases that can cause body odor is diabetes. This is especially true when a person is poorly controlled blood sugar that develops a condition called ketoacidosis. This condition not only causes body odor but also a distinctive breath odor. Bad body odor can also be a sign of liver disease or severe kidney in which the body is unable to process and remove certain toxins. This condition can be confirmed by blood tests that measure kidney and liver function. Sometimes, an overactive thyroid can also cause body odor problem because of the tendency of patients to excessive sweating ...
Design workshops with ASA and design consultants were used to flush out key decision-making issues. An aggressive fenceline impact Dilutions-to-Threshold (D/T) goal of 2 D/T (1 hour average) at the property line was agreed upon by all parties as the foundation for the odor control design. Odor sampling and analysis was conducted to identify major odor sources. Industrial Source Complex Dispersion Short Term (ISCST3) Dispersion Modeling was performed with the existing and future site plans and odor sources in order to assess odorous impacts by unit process/facility. Isopleths, showing D/T contours by source, were used by ASA and CH2M HILL to prioritize odor sources that required containment and treatment to meet odor control goals ...
Odor alerts are declared when the Odor Hotline receives ten calls of a similar nature within a continuous six-hour period. Once the necessary number of odor complaints is received the staff of the Odor Hotline will phone one of the inspectors from the Neighborhood Inspection Division who is on call to respond to odor alerts on a 24 hour - 7 days a week basis.. Based on the information received from the Odor Hotline staff, the inspector will conduct an investigation in an attempt to determine the source of the nuisance odor. Inspectors utilize real time weather information from the National Weather Service as an aid in pinpointing the source of the nuisance odor.. Once the determination has been made as to the source of the offending odor, the inspector then prepares a notice of violation. The notice is sent to the management of the company determined to be the source of the odor. If a company receives three or more notices of violation within a continuous ninety (90) day period, the company is ...
A unifying feature of mammalian and insect olfactory systems is that olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) expressing the same unique odorant-receptor gene converge onto the same glomeruli in the brain [1-7]. Most odorants activate a combination of receptors and thus distinct patterns of glomeruli, forming a proposed combinatorial spatial code that could support discrimination between a large number of odorants [8-11]. OSNs also exhibit odor-evoked responses with complex temporal dynamics [11], but the contribution of this activity to behavioral odor discrimination has received little attention [12]. Here, we investigated the importance of spatial encoding in the relatively simple Drosophila antennal lobe. We show that Drosophila can learn to discriminate between two odorants with one functional class of Or83b-expressing OSNs. Furthermore, these flies encode one odorant from a mixture and cross-adapt to odorants that activate the relevant OSN class, demonstrating that they discriminate odorants by using the
Many studies have shown that laboratory rodents that have never been exposed to a live cat (or any cat vestiges), demonstrate strong fear responses when exposed to cat odor [1-13]. Pharmacological studies that use responses of rodents to cat odor as a model of human anxiety have produced controversial results. Benzodiazepine drugs, which are effective against generalized anxiety disorder in humans [14] and in classical animal models of anxiety (e.g. elevated plus-maze, black/white box, open-field) [6, 8-10, 15-19], can sometimes modulate the defensive responses of rodents to cat odor [2-4, 8, 9]. In other studies, however, benzodiazepines did not change the defensive behavior of rats [6, 10] or mice [1, 10] exposed to cat odor. Zangrossi and File [11] reported that chlordiazepoxide reduced anxiety evaluated in the social interaction and elevated plus-maze tests after exposure to cat odor, but it had only a limited effect on the direct responses of rats exposed to cat odor. These findings suggest ...
The axilla is a major source of human body odour from which the characteristic musky, urinous or acidic odours emanate, and are predominantly due to bacterial metabolism of the protein-rich fluid secreted by the apocrine and sebaceous glands located in this area (Senol and Fireman, 1999). Clothing has been implicated in contributing to body odour intensity, possibly even increasing the intensity (Dravnieks, et al., 1968; Shelley, et al., 1953) by the transfer of secretions, skin debris and bacteria from the body to the fabric substrate. Despite much anecdotal evidence indicating that some fibres and fabrics are better at limiting odour intensity than others, there appears to be no published research confirming this. The purpose of this study therefore, was to determine whether fabrics varying in fibre content (cotton, wool, polyester) and fabric knit structure (interlock, single jersey, 1x1 rib) differed in the extent to which they retained and emanated axillary odour following wear, and whether ...
All natural dog odors are most prominent near the ears, and from the paw pads. Dogs naturally produce secretions, the function of which is to produce scents allowing for species and individual animal recognition by other dogs and for use in scent-marking of territory. This is a feature they share with other canids. Dogs only produce sweat on areas not covered with fur, such as the nose and paw pads, unlike humans who sweat almost everywhere.[1] However, they do have sweat glands, called apocrine glands, associated with every hair follicle on their body. The exact function of these glands is not known, but they may produce pheromones or chemical signals for communication with other dogs. It is believed that these sweat secretions produce an individual odor signal that is recognizable by other dogs.[2] Dogs also have sweat glands on their noses. These are eccrine glands. When these glands are active, they leave the nose and paw pads slightly moist and help these specialized skin features maintain ...
Only little is known about whether single volatile compounds are as efficient in eliciting behavioral responses in animals as the whole complex mixture of a behaviorally relevant odor. Recent studies analysing the composition of volatiles in mammalian blood, an important prey-associated odor stimulus for predators, found the odorant trans-4,5-epoxy-(E)-2-decenal to evoke a typical
Many insects use chemical information to gather information about their environment. Infochemicals are spread into the environment as the wind disperses the odor molecules from the source. The structure of an odor plume around a food source is complex and time-dependent. At a large scale, it meanders as it moves with the wind. At a smaller scale, patches with odors are interspersed with regions of clean air. In this study, we compare a plume model that takes the features of a real odor plume into account, a so-called filamentous plume model, with a simplified, time-averaged model, which is commonly used in the literature, and we investigate by simulation their effect on a modeled fruit fly population. During foraging Drosophila melanogaster is attracted to food odors and its aggregation pheromone. Ample knowledge on the attraction to these infochemicals in an experimental set-up exist in the literature. The comparison of the plumes in a simulation study clearly showed that the filamentous plume ...

We analyze everyday articles and raw materials and also technological, physical, and chemical processes that lead to undesired/desired odor changes. We identify off-odors and characterize pleasant odors, such as the odor of wood. We compare different samples, both qualitatively and quantitatively. We identify possible reaction pathways and precursor molecules that contribute to odor formation. Advanced analytical methods enable us to detect and identify odors at a molecular level. We also are able to characterize and assess the expectations of consumers for specific products. This allows objective estimation of whether a specific product has a desired odor or an undesired off-odor. Using substantiated findings we can help you optimize the odor of your products to consumer wishes. ...

If the primary purpose of an enzymatic cleaner is to eliminate odor, the same application and agitation procedure is followed. Oftentimes, this process will need to be undertaken twice if a particularly troublesome and pervasive odor is in need of remediation. Dog and cat urine odor are the most commonplace types of odors for which enzymatic cleaner is utilized. An enzymatic cleaner is effective with these types of odors because they are protein-based. Enzymes digest the organic material that is contained in dog and cat urine, a process that eliminates any associated foul odor. If the odor is particularly profound, a liquid derivation of an enzymatic product is preferred. With that said, the sprayer should be abandoned. Rather, the sprayer top should be removed and the contaminated area should be saturated with the enzymatic product. The enzymatic cleaner should be allowed to soak for at least 30 minutes. In an arid climate, covering the treated item or area with a damp cotton towel is ...
Frontiers The open-access journal Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution reports the first known case where four species, all at different levels in the food chain, use a single odor to communicate with and ruthlessly exploit each other.. Plant-feeding insects are often attracted to odors that are released by damaged plant tissue because these plants are already under attack and so a good place to look for food, sexual partners, and egg-laying sites. The jumping plant louse Diaphorina citri hones in on the odor methyl salicylate that is released by damaged young leaves of citrus trees, whose sap is the only food of the young lice. But other species have evolved the capacity to take advantage of its attraction to methyl salicylate.. One of these is the bacterium Canditatus Liberibacter asiaticus, which infects citrus trees, hijacks its odor production, and forces it to release methyl salicylate to mimic an attack by plant lice. Jumping plant lice that fly towards the source of the odor are duped: ...
Non-associative memory contributes to filtering extraneous information from the environment. Additionally, behavioral state alterations such as stress have long been implicated in memory. Here, I determined how stress, through evoked changes in the noradrenergic system, affects early processing of sensory information during non-associative tasks. In chapter 1, I show that behavioral habituation to odor stimuli is correlated with adaption of neural responses in mitral/tufted (M/T) neurons of the main olfactory bulb (MOB) in anesthetized rats. I further show that both behavioral and neural habituation require functioning NMDA receptors in the MOB. This suggests a likely odor experience-dependent plasticity that occurs in the MOB. In chapter 2, I show that noradrenergic manipulations affect odor memory duration. Specifically, acute stress abolishes odor memory expression at a 30min delay, but this effect is blocked by infusions of noradrenaline (NA) antagonists into the MOB prior to the experiment. ...

The most common cause of bad odor coming from the vagina is a condition called bacterial vaginosis, also called gardnerella. The odor stems from an overgrowth of certain bacteria in the vagina that causes a strong fishy odor. The odor is worse after intercourse because the pH of the semen causes more of the odor to be released. Prescription pills or cream can usually eliminate the bacterial imbalance. In premenopausal women, a not uncommon cause of bad odor is a forgotten tampon. Removal of the tampon will correct the problem. Gentle cleansing of the vulva with clean water is usually sufficient for hygiene. Any soap can be irritating to the vulva and in some cases can cause dermatitis, skin irritation, or rash. In most cases, douching is not recommended ...
Genetic analysis of host attraction and repulsion in Aedes aegypti. Matthew DeGennaro, Ph.D.. Host odor is a long-range, attractive cue that guides mosquitoes to their hosts. The mosquito perceives differences in host odor, both between and within species, to determine which host to feed upon. Until recently, the molecular mechanism by which mosquitoes translate host odor information into host-seeking behavior has only been inferred. To shed new light on mosquito olfaction and host-seeking behavior, we developed a technique for targeted mutagenesis in Aedes aegypti using zinc-finger nucleases. Using this technique, my co-authors and I demonstrated that orco, an olfactory co-receptor, enables host odor attraction, the preference of mosquitoes for human hosts, and DEET-driven repellency. In addition, the establishment of loss-of-function genetics in Aedes aegypti using zinc-finger nucleases has opened new paths of investigation in vector biology.. How volatile DEET drives repellency in insects is ...

Functional studies suggest that the neural representations of odorants vary systematically as a function of molecular structural features such as carbon chain length or functional group. Psychophysical studies in both humans and animal models have reported some correlations between perceived odor quality and these molecular properties but the generality of such correlations is unknown. Using an operant conditioning paradigm we therefore tested the ability of CD-1 mice to discriminate between 25 odorants comprising members of five homologous series of aliphatic odorants (C4-C8) presented at a gas phase concentration of 1 ppm. We found a) that all mice significantly discriminated between all 50 stimulus pairs that involved odorants sharing the same functional group, but differing in carbon chain length, as well as between all 50 stimulus pairs that involved odorants sharing the same carbon chain length but differing in functional group, b) a significant negative cor- relation between ...
The scientists describe development of a new material consisting of nanoparticles of silica (the main ingredient in beach sand) - each 1/50,000th the width of a human hair - coated with copper. That metal has well-established antibacterial and anti-odor properties, and the nanoparticles gave copper a greater surface area to exert its effects. Tests of the particles against ethyl mercaptan, the stuff that gives natural gas its unpleasant odor, showed that nanoparticles were up to twice as effective as the gold standard - activated carbon - at removing the materials foul-smelling odor. In addition to fighting odors, the particles also show promise for removing sulfur contaminants found in crude oil and for fighting harmful bacteria, they add. ARTICLE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ...
... Neighbors object to unpleasant odors emitted at wastewater treatment plants, and dealing with such odors requires tact as well as technology. The operators and engineers must listen to complaints, then develop both immediate and long range odor control measures. Operator training is important, as is regular citizen involvement throughout the entire process. An effective program balances the technology, standby systems, attentive maintenance processes and a serious commitment to odor monitoring. Systems available include chemical addition, wet chemical scrubbing, carbon adsorption, combustion, impregnated pellets, biological processes, tall stack dispersion, and masking agents. Containing the processes under buildings, lids or domes is also effective if measures are taken to prevent corrosion and promote worker safety.

Laboratory tests have confirmed that a byproduct of dead algae is producing the odd tastes and odors in the citys water supply. Jeanette Klamm, a spokeswoman for the citys Utilities Department, said test results found elevated geosmin levels in the raw water coming out of Clinton Lake. Geosmin, a compound produced when algae die, can cause an earthy and musty taste and odor to drinking water. But city officials said the geosmin poses no health risks to people or pets who consume the water. Klamm said the geosmin levels currently are holding steady. The city hopes the taste and odor issues soon will become less noticeable, but said it was difficult to predict future levels because they fluctuate with the weather. Klamm said the city is working to remove the taste and odor by adding more carbon to the citys water treatment process. "But it is one of those things where at a certain point, the carbon just doesnt do it anymore," Klamm said. Klamm, however, said the city doesnt have alternative ...
Odors in pantries are typically caused by bacteria or fungi that are feeding of food or moisture and causing rot, mold, or mildew. Lysol, as well as bleach and vinegar, kills 99 percent of these pathogens and will therefore get rid of the odor. The distinct advantage that Lysol has is that it now comes in a variety of pleasant scents.. Lysol comes in mist and spray solution. Use the mist if your pantry just smells a bit musty (its handy to keep in the bathroom, too!). Use the cleaning solution if youre cleaning up rotten produce or if the odor is so pervasive that you have to clean your shelves. Lysol cleaners are great to use when youre spring cleaning.. Just a word of common sense caution: dont spray Lysol on your food, especially produce that youll be ingesting directly.. Odors in your pantry can spread to your whole kitchen. If nothing else, theyll assault your olfactory senses every time you open your door. Since the odor can be absorbed by boxed goods and even pastas and other foods, ...
The paper evaluates swine odor management strategies using the fuzzy extension of the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), which is a multiple criteria decision making approach based on fuzzy scales. The evaluation is conducted using data from our cost effectiveness study of odor management strategies and our on farm studies relating odor to various management practices. These strategies include manual oil sprinkling, automatic oil sprinkling, wet scrubber, diffusion-coagulation-separation (DCS) deduster, pelleting feed, and draining shallow pit weekly. The criteria employed to evaluate the strategies are odor reduction efficiency, costs, nutrients in manure, and other benefits. Two producer profiles are considered: (a) producers who are pressured to achieve maximum reduction in odor emissions; and (b) producers who are constrained with limited financial resources. Both of these profiles are reflective of current situations for some producers. The results show that, as the scale fuzziness decreases, the

Andrea Dietrich, Ph.D., who reported to the ACS, the worlds largest scientific society, pointed out that a rash of costly pinhole leaks in recent years in commonly used copper water pipes has led to renewed interest in lower priced plastic pipes. Dietrich and colleagues at Virginia Tech are among those scientists leading the way in evaluating how plastic might affect water quality and odor.. "Although water is a complex mixture of organic and inorganic chemicals, most people expect their drinking water to have little or no flavor," Dietrich noted. With those expectations, any taste or odor in a glass of water can be "highly noticeable." Dietrichs team is using two methods to evaluate odors associated with several types of plastic piping. First, sensory panelists smell and describe the odor of the water after it has sat in the pipes for several days. Then, the water undergoes chemical analyses for metals and organics and basic water quality parameters, such as pH.. Using specially prepared, ...
An observational study was undertaken to measure odour and dust (PM10 and PM2.5) emission rates and identify non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) and odorants in the exhaust air from two tunnel-ventilated layer-chicken sheds that were configured with multi-tiered cages and manure belts. The study sites were located in south-eastern Queensland and the West Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. Samples were collected in summer and winter on sequential days across the manure-belt cleaning cycle. Odour emissions ranged from 58 to 512 ou/s per 1000 birds (0.03-0.27 ou/s.kg) and dust emission rates ranged 0.014-0.184 mg/s per 1000 birds for PM10 and 0.001-0.190 mg/s per 1000 birds for PM2.5. Twenty NMVOCs were identified, including three that were also identified as odorants using thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry/olfactometry analysis. Odour emission rates were observed to vary with the amount of manure accumulation on the manure belts, being lowest 2-4 days after ...
Chinese, Africans and Indians may differ in what odors they find yummy, but they all perceive pleasantness of odor perception, as such, in the same way, according to the findings of neurobiologists from the University of California, Berkeley, and the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel. Not only are pleasant odors universal, the UC…

PHILADELPHIA - A new study from the Monell Center, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and collaborating institutions reports a uniquely identifiable odor signature from mouse models of Alzheimers disease. The odor signature appears in urine before significant development of Alzheimer-related brain pathology, suggesting that it may be possible to develop a non-invasive tool for early diagnosis of Alzheimers disease. "Previous research from the USDA and Monell has focused on body odor changes due to exogenous sources such as viruses or vaccines. Now we have evidence that urinary odor signatures can be altered by changes in the brain characteristic of Alzheimers disease," said study author Bruce Kimball, PhD, a chemical ecologist with the USDA National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC) who is stationed at the Monell Center. "This finding may also have implications for other neurologic diseases." Identification of an early biomarker for Alzheimers disease could potentially allow physicians ...
Color has a profound effect on the perception of odors. For example, strawberry-flavored drinks smell more pleasant when colored red than green and descriptions of the nose of a wine are dramatically influenced by its color. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we demonstrate a neurophysiological correlate of these cross-modal visual influences on olfactory perception. Subjects were scanned while exposed either to odors or colors in isolation or to color-odor combinations that were rated on the basis of how well they were perceived to match. Activity in caudal regions of the orbitofrontal cortex and in the insular cortex increased progressively with the perceived congruency of the odor-color pairs. These findings demonstrate the neuronal correlates of olfactory response modulation by color cues in brain areas previously identified as encoding the hedonic value of smells.

Dont cover up, clean up. Heres how. There are whole sections of products in supermarkets and discount stores intended to combat household odors, but most dont attack the source. Here we investigated modulation of synaptic input from olfactory sensory neurons to the glomeruli of the main olfactory bulb in anesthetized mice following a phase of increased noradrenaline release. By comparing the magnitude of IOS odor responses in the glomeruli before and after LC stimulation during odor exposure, we found that glomerular activity was suppressed long term by noradrenaline. Subsequent imaging experiments using mice expressing the genetically encoded calcium sensor GCaMP2 selectively in OSNs allowed us to confirm that this suppression is implemented as a reduction in the gain of presynaptic input to the glomeruli. Pharmacological manipulations revealed that LC-mediated suppression required noradrenergic receptor activation in the glomerular layer. Surprisingly, LC stimulation in the absence of odors also resulted in reduction of odor response, which appears to be even stronger. Thus, the presence of odors during episodes of elevated noradrenaline levels is not necessary to ...

In mammals, each olfactory receptor neuron expresses only one functional odor receptor. Odor receptor nerve cells function like a key-lock system: If the airborne molecules of a certain chemical can fit into the lock, the nerve cell will respond. There are, at present, a number of competing theories regarding the mechanism of odor coding and perception. According to the shape theory, each receptor detects a feature of the odor molecule. Weak-shape theory, known as odotope theory, suggests that different receptors detect only small pieces of molecules, and these minimal inputs are combined to form a larger olfactory perception (similar to the way visual perception is built up of smaller, information-poor sensations, combined and refined to create a detailed overall perception).[citation needed] An alternative theory, the vibration theory proposed by Luca Turin, posits that odor receptors detect the frequencies of vibrations of odor molecules in the infrared range by electron tunnelling. However, ...

It can be difficult to deal with body odor and can also be embarrassing. Here is some advice for those who suffer from body odor.
Yes, there is definitely a better way to get rid of the mice and youll say, "why didnt I think of that?" Its simply the good, old-fashioned mouse trap. When you trap mice you have the obvious advantage of having the carcass right there for disposal. I know that many people would prefer not to see the dead mouse but the alternative is having mice die in your walls.. None of the poisons (called rodenticides) available for mouse control kill the mouse immediately after feeding. Mice usually die later in hiding places in or near their nests, which often means inside wall or ceiling voids. When this happens, unless you know exactly where the carcass is and can easily get to it, you have to put up with the odor of decay. Dead mice will smell until they are completely decomposed or until they are dried out. Until then, there are deodorizers or odor neutralizing products that can be applied into the wall void or into the whole room to help you tolerate the odor.. Besides the odor, theres another ...
When you are dealing with urine odor often you do not have a stain or anything visible indication to show you where the urine odor is originating from, or where the problem is. I am going to discuss the different methods of finding these areas. We have several tools available to locate them.. It is very important to locate each area because if you dont find all the problem areas, you will not be able to completely eliminate the urine smell. Each spot needs to be treated. It needs to be treated with the correct chemicals and in the correct way if you want to get 100% odor removal. The steps you take change depending on how severe your urine odor problem is.. The tools available are our eyes, our nose, ultraviolet (UV) lights, and moisture detector.. Eyes If you actually see the area where the dog is urinating, or when there is a yellow stain left on the surface of the carpet, this is when we use our eyes to locate the area. If you can look at the back of a loose carpet or rug and inspect it, ...

At a recent meeting, Shadow Creek Ranch residents were updated on what months of investigations have revealed about the cause of odors that have so far led to more than 1,000 complaints from the neighborhood. Elected officials from Pearland and Fort Bend County and two state representatives admitted that the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality hasnt found the cause or causes because the odors have been too inconsistent to glean sufficient samples. Advised at the May 3 meeting at Reflection Bay Event Center to continue reporting the odors to the state agency, residents voiced concerns about why the issue was so difficult to pinpoint and requested that TCEQ take more aggressive steps. Brandon Rogers, a representative from the nearby Blue Ridge Landfill in Fort Bend County, invited residents to tour the facility to check if what they smell there is the same as some of the odors wafting around their neighborhoods.

Subject: Update on reported lab odor Dear Labmembers: Last night around 7:30 pm, a strong odor was reported in the lab near the wbsilicide bench. The immediate area was cleared. By 8:30, the odor had completely dissipated. Toxic gas sensors located in this area did not detect alarm levels; if they had, there would have been an automatic building evacuation. Today, we think the possible source might have been tylan6*,* the POCl3 furnace. This furnace will remain shutdown until we can take measures to ensure it can be run safely. Until then, if you really need phosporous doping, staff will work with you to find alternatives. We want to acknowledge rostam and xzhuang1 who observed the problem and acted quickly to shutdown the tylan6 furnace, and maxms who informed staff by calling the off-hours duty phone. Please always be alert to unusual odors and sounds as they are often the first clue to what could be a serious lab problem. Thanks for your attention -- Your SNF Staff -------------- next part ...
Odor generating facilities in San Jose have been inflicting severe loss in quality of life and negative socio-economic impacts to communities and businesses downwind for decades, with over 100,000 daytime population in Milpitas and South Fremont. Past lawsuit settlements between City of San Jose, City of Milpitas, Browning Ferris, Intl Disposal Corp, Wastewater Treatment Plant, and McCarthy Ranch have all failed to contain the problem from lack of oversight and enforcement. These odor generating facilities continue to be permitted to expand their operations with the addition of the largest recycling center, anaerobic digester, approval of Newby Island and Zanker Landfill height/capacity expansion in recent years.. We seek actions to halt the environmental injustice on our community. We seek permanent odor abatement from the area major odor producers including a fixed closure date for the 80+ year old Newby Island facility (operated by Republic Services) and punitive damages for their ...

The detection of predators by prey species is crucial in order to escape the threat posed by a predator. In mammals, the olfactory sensory system is commonly used to detect odors emitted by predators, and to determine how threatening the situation actually is. However, knowledge about this ability is still sparse and in some cases conflicting. The aim of the present study was therefore to assess whether CD-1 mice (Mus musculus) show behaviors such as avoidance, anxiety and/or decreased activity when exposed to any of the three odorants: cat bladder urine, horse voided urine or a fruity odor (N-pentyl acetate), with a blank solvent as an alternative in a two-compartment test arena. I found no significant differences between avoidance (the time that the mice spent in the different compartments), anxiety (the numbers of fecal pellets dropped by the mice), or the overall activity (the number of switches between the two compartments), when the mice were exposed to the three different odors. The fact ...
