Navigating an odor landscape is a critical behavior for the survival of many species, including mice. An ethologically relevant mouse behavior is locating food using information about odor concentration. To approximate this behavior, we used an open field odor-based spot-finding task indoors with little wind, examining navigation strategies as mice search for and approach an odor source. After mice were trained to navigate to odor sources paired with food reward, we observed behavioral changes consistent with localization 10-45 cm away from the source. We report two experiments designed to investigate cross-modal correspondences between a range of seven olfactory stimuli and both the pitch and instrument class of sounds as well as the angularity of visually presented shapes. The results revealed that odors were preferentially matched to musical features: For example, the odors of candied orange and iris flower were matched to significantly higher pitches than the odors of musk and roasted coffee. Meanwhile, the odor of crème brûlée was associated with a more rounded shape than the musk odor. Moreover, by simultaneously testing cross-modal correspondences between olfactory stimuli and matches in two other modalities, we were able to compare the ratings associated with each correspondence. Non-associative memory contributes to filtering extraneous information from the environment. Additionally, behavioral state alterations such as stress have long been implicated in memory. Here, I determined how stress, through evoked changes in the noradrenergic system, affects early processing of sensory information during non-associative tasks. In chapter 1, I show that behavioral habituation to odor stimuli is correlated with adaption of neural responses in mitral/tufted (M/T) neurons of the main olfactory bulb (MOB) in anesthetized rats. I further show that both behavioral and neural habituation require functioning NMDA receptors in the MOB. This suggests a likely odor experience-dependent plasticity that occurs in the MOB. In chapter 2, I show that noradrenergic manipulations affect odor memory duration. Biofiltration is an odour removal technology in which an odorous air stream is passed through a moist, porous medium prior to emission into the atmosphere. Odorous compounds are removed in the filter medium through absorption and bio-oxidation. Four experimental biofilter units were retrofitted to a 2000-hog, 4 room feeder facility in southern Manitoba. The biofilters were designed to eliminate odour from the barn emissions during the winter while minimizing cost. The biofilter bed temperature remained in a temperature range suitable for odour removal, even during very ambient temperatures below -20C. Odour removal efficiency from September to February averaged between 69 and 87%. Ammonia and hydrogen sulfide levels were reduced by 56 to 100%. In contrast, analogous research on the effect of garlic on axillary odour is currently missing. Here, in three studies varying in the amount and nature of garlic provided (raw garlic in study 1 and 2, garlic capsules in study 3), we tested the effect of garlic consumption on the quality of axillary odour. A balanced within-subject experimental design was used. In total, 42 male odour donors were allocated to either a garlic or non-garlic condition, after which they wore axillary pads for 12 h to collect body odour. One week later, the conditions were reversed. Odour samples were then judged for their pleasantness, attractiveness, masculinity and intensity by 82 women. During olfactory learning in fruit flies, dopaminergic neurons assign value to odor representations in the mushroom body Kenyon cells. Here we identify a class of downstream glutamatergic mushroom body output neurons (MBONs) called M4/6, or MBON-β2β2a, MBON-β2mp, and MBON-γ5β2a, whose dendritic fields overlap with dopaminergic neuron projections in the tips of the β, β, and γ lobes. This anatomy and their odor tuning suggests that M4/6 neurons pool odor-driven Kenyon cell synaptic outputs. Like that of mushroom body neurons, M4/6 output is required for expression of appetitive and aversive memory performance. Moreover, appetitive and aversive olfactory conditioning bidirectionally alters the relative odor-drive of M4β neurons (MBON-β2mp).
