Tulsi has been recognized for thousands of years to be one of Indias greatest health promoting herbs. It has benefits for hundreds of conditions with thousands of years of empirical experience and use.To report the alterations inflicted by Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi) in thyroid and parathyroid gland, the histological studies with these glands were done after administration of a dose of 1 g/ kg body weight for 60 days. Follicles and Interfollicular spaces of thyroid gland and spherical chief cells with oval nuclei of parathyroid gland were similar in both experimental and control groups. The Ocimum sanctum leaves seemed to be non toxic on thyroid and parathyroid cells as we did not observe any pathological symptom in the histology of these vital organs. Thyroprotective effect of Ocimum sanctum leaves may be assumed and could be suggested that Ocimum sanctum is safe for use, but studies are needed with further higher doses and duration to complete the safety profile of this plant.

ABSTRACT. Treatment of myocardial infarction (MI) has undergone major advances in recent years, including reductions in mortality and hospital stays. Cardioprotective effects Ocimum gratissimum fresh leaves were evaluated in rat model having acute MI induced by Musa acuminata. Eating bananas on an empty stomach is not good to the health, because when stomach is empty, there is nearly no food in the stomach that can be digested. If this movement eats bananas, it will speed up the stomachs movement and the promotion of blood circulation, to increase the heart load. It is very easy to induce the myocardial infection. Adult male rats were divided into 4 groups. 3 groups receive Musa acuminata (banana) and 1 group Test drug. Cardio toxicity, evident from increased activities of Serum Creatine phosphokinase, Lactate Dehydrogenase, Aspartate Transaminase and Alanine Transaminase in Musa acuminata administered rats, and it was reversed by Ocimum gratissimum treatment. It never ceases to amaze me just how connected we are, from Lagos to Laos. Scent leaves, Perilla, Shiso, of the family Lamiaceae. These herbaceous, perennial shrubs are cousins in the mint family. I thought I knew everything about this plant. Growing up, it featured prominently in pepper soup, added at the last minute to bring clean citrus flavours and a distinctive scent. In Port Harcourt, I learnt to enjoy it in Kekefia - unripe pottage. It made the mandatory unripe plantains more than edible.. What changed things for me was having the plant in my garden. As is wont to happen when you get close to a thing, you begin to see more. What I noticed was the young leaves bore none of the toughness of the older leaves. That the buds were amazing as flavour pearls in oven-baked Moin-moin… and that you could do so much more than have it in soup.. Names. Scent leaves go by many names. Ocimum gratissimum in Latin; Scent leaf, Clove basil or tea bush in Nigerian English and a host of other names in ...
Most worshipped plant in Hindu culture. It has a mythological background as tulsi is considered as lord Krishnas wife. Literal meaning of tulsi is incomparable so as the name suggest, it really has properties that are incomparable with any other herb. It is a strong belief that those who plant tulsi in there houses never get ill, as it is very lovable to lord Krishna and lord Krishna has blessed this herb with this property. Scientific reason of this story is that tulsi contains such a chemical composition that no mosquitoes and flies can come near the plant because of it s peculiar odor. Thereby by planting tulsi in courtyard prevents entry of these creatures in house thus rendering home safe from any diseases caused by these organisms ...

This study was aimed at investigating the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory effect, hypolidemic and antioxidant properties of combined extract of Occimum gratissimum andVernonia amygdalina in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Thirty (30) apparently healthy male Wistar rats were grouped into: control, diabetic, diabetic + insulin, diabetic + 100 mg/kg and diabetic + 250 mg/kg extract groups. All rats except those in the control group were made diabetic using a single intraperitoneal injection of 60 mg/kg streptozotocin. Administration of extract began four days after induction of diabetes and lasted for four weeks. Results show a significant (P<0.05) increase in serum and liver triacyglycerol, total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein levels upon induction of diabetes, which reduced significantly (P<0.05) in rats given insulin and the extract. HDL-C levels remained unchanged in both liver and serum of diabetic rats when compared to control rats. The
The present study was carried out to determine the antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of Ocimum basilicum collected from different regions of the world. The accession V1 is from Sudan, V2 from Iraq, V3 from Germany, V4 from Thailand, V5 from Russia and V6 from Maldives. The extracts from six basil accessions were analysed for their DPPH free radical scavenging activity and their total phenolic content (TPC). The results suggest that the highest antioxidant activity was found in V6 (from Maldives) and the lowest antioxidant activity was found in V4 (from Thailand). The highest amount of phenolic content was found in V6 (from Maldives) and the lowest phenolic content was found inV4 (from Thailand). This study shows that basil is a good source of free-radical scavenging compounds that have their traditional medicinal applications.. ...
Ocimum americanum L. (Lamiaceae) and Pupalia lappacea (L) Juss. (Amaranthaceae) are two plants used in Bénin to manage hypertension. Little scientific data is available on the antihypertensive properties of these plants. Therefore, we investigated the antihypertensive potential of ethanolic extracts of O. americanum and P. lappacea on L-NAME-induced hypertensive rats. The DPPH free radical scavenging potential, Fe3+ reducing capacity, superoxide anion radical and hydrogen peroxide scavenging were assessed. Extracts were also screened for their active compounds using ultimate high-performance liquid chromatography 3000. CODA™ non-invasive blood pressure system was used to record blood pression parameters. Both extracts induced significant decrease of systolic, diastolic blood pressure and mean arterial pression. O. americanum extract at 250 mg/kg body weight, decreased mean blood pressure (MBP) from 146 ± 4.80 to 98.4 ± 9.44 mmHg and P. lappacea extract from 154.4 ±

Phenylalanine amonia-lyase (PAL) is one of the most important enzymes that plays a key role in regulationof phenylpropanoid production in plants. It catalyzes the first step of the phenylpropanoid pathway in whichL-phenylalanine is deaminated to trans-cinnamic acid. This step is significant for metabolic engineering andhyper-expression of the major phenylpropanoid, methyl chavicol. We followed gene expression andactivity of PAL in Ocimum basilicum L. at different stages of growth including seedling, beginning andmiddle of growth phase, budding stage and flowering, and their correlation with final concentration of phenylpropanoid compounds. The level of gene expression was monitored by semi quantitative RT-PCR andphenylpropanoid compounds were identified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). PALactivity was assayed using spectrophotometer. The results indicated that the level of gene expression andactivity of PAL enzyme are altered during the plant development, where the highest expression and

Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) plants have multiple uses, ranging from spice to cosmetic purpose, besides being a source of essential oil and aromatic. These plants were commonly propagated by seed, however, few agrotechnologies are used to enhance the seed germination and initial growth in this crop. For this reason, our research aimed to evaluate aspects of seed germination of Ocimum basilicum L. cv. Limoncino, subjected to different bioregulators applied via substrate imbibition. The experiment was carried out in completely randomized design, with four treatments, as follows: T1: control (distilled water), T2: T13 a solution of a product formulated based on indolbutyric acid + naphthalene acetic acid + gibberellic acid (0.2 mL L-1, Liko Química), T3: gibberellic acid (0.5 mM L-1, progibb-400®) and T4: brassinosteroids (0.1 mM L-1). We evaluated: germination rate, germination speed index (GSI), first count, root and shoot length and chlorophyll a, b, total and carotenoids. The bioregulators did ...

Surface glandular trichomes distributed throughout the aerial parts of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) produce and store monoterpene, sesquiterpene, and phenylpropene volatiles. Three distinct basil chemotypes were used to examine the molecular mechanisms underlying the divergence in their monoterpene and sesquiterpene content. The relative levels of specific terpenes in the glandular trichomes of each cultivar were correlated with the levels of transcripts for eight genes encoding distinct terpene synthases. In a cultivar that produces mostly (R)-linalool, transcripts of (R)-linalool synthase (LIS) were the most abundant of these eight. In a cultivar that synthesizes mostly geraniol, transcripts of geraniol synthase were the most abundant, but the glands of this cultivar also contained a transcript of an (R)-LIS gene with a 1-base insertion that caused a frameshift mutation. A geraniol synthase-LIS hybrid gene was constructed and expressed in Escherichia coli, and the protein catalyzed the ...
Featured Diagnosis - Stem rot on sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) caused by the fungus, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. Sample submitted in May 2015 from Southern NM. Key plant symptoms: necrotic stem lesions and wilt. Key fungal diagnostic characteristic: dark black overwintering structures called sclerotia. These sclerotia can survive and persist for many years in the soil. Unfortunately, once a plant is infected, there is no cure ...
Terpenoids are one of the largest and most diverse families of natural compounds. They are heavily used in industry, and the trend is toward engineering modified microorganisms that produce high levels of specific terpenoids. Most studies have focused on creating specific heterologous pathways for sesquiterpenes in Escherichia coli or yeast. We subjected the Saccharomyces cerevisiae ERG20 gene (encoding farnesyl diphosphate synthase) to a set of amino acid mutations in the catalytic site at position K197. Mutated strains have been shown to exhibit various growth rate, sterol amount, and monoterpenol-producing capacities. These results are discussed in the context of the potential use of these mutated strains for heterologous expression of monoterpenoid synthases, which was investigated using Ocimum basilicum geraniol synthase. The results obtained with up to 5 mg/L geraniol suggest a major improvement compared with previous available expression systems like Escherichia coli or yeast strains with ...
Most worshipped plant in Hindu culture. It has a mythological background as tulsi is considered as lord Krishnas wife. Literal meaning of tulsi is incomparable so as the name suggest, it really has properties that are incomparable with any other herb. Every thing mentioned in Indian mythology has a scientific background. So as the culture of planting tulsi in center of court yard in Hindu homes.
