Occupational health service programmes aim to reduce injury and illness risks. Yet, recent studies indicate that members of the voluntary Farmers Occupational Health Service programme (FOHS) in Finland have filed more occupational injury and disease claims than non-members. To investigate this unexpected finding further, we conducted a safety risk management survey among farmers (n=591). We used multivariable regression to evaluate the differences in injury incident reporting between FOHS members and non-members while controlling for demographic, risk perception, and management practice variables. We found that FOHS members were significantly younger, had larger farms, and had more livestock than non-members. Similar to recent studies, FOHS members reported 1.5 times more injury incidents compared to non-members. However, when controlling for farm size, dependence on one person, physical strain at work, and injuries to family members, there was no significant difference in injury incidence between FOHS

While more employers are focusing on the need to integrate preventive services into health benefit programs, employees still must be urged to take advantage of these benefits. E. Health cash plans are policies employers can offer their staff to reimburse the partial or full cost of everyday health treatments such as employee assistance programmes (EAPs), dental appointments and hospital inpatient care. They are a preventative way of offering employees health and wellbeing benefits, whereas private medical insurance (PMI) covers the treatment of curable, short-term conditions or accidents, such as outpatient procedures and diagnostic tests.. Different needs. Health cash plans also sit well alongside other healthcare benefits, including PMI, and although the two differ, employers may opt to offer both to cover all manner of employees needs.. Paul Gambon, sales director at Medicash, says: Health cash plans cover the everyday health needs of employees, whereas PMI is [used in] the eventuality should something more severe, [such as] a long-term health condition, occur.. Mental health services are normally provided as part of an employee assistance program (EAP), or healthcare plan. How did this work for your employees before the pandemic? Does it still work now? The ability of patients to receive mental health care through telehealth visits is particularly important. A May 2020 survey by the American Psychiatric Association showed that prior to the public health emergency a majority of psychiatrists did no visits by tele-health. By mid-May, 86% percent of providers were seeing 75% or more of their patient load via telehealth.8 Make sure your programs provide payment for virtual visits. Similarly, for patients who rely on 12 step programs, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, there has been an explosion of virtual meetings. Employees should be made aware of available opportunities for self-care. CDC has provided resources and guidance to cope with stress during the pandemic13. Large employers need to prioritise mental health as a boardroom issue, putting it on a par with physical health, according to a report by mental health charity Mind.. The Taking care of business study, published in September, was the result of a summit held in May, attended by a range of leading employers and co-hosted by health provider AXA ICAS.. Key recommendations include ensuring staff mental wellbeing is being monitored and reported back to the board. Employers, too, need to be creating an open, supportive workplace and introducing employee assistance programmes (EAPs), with smaller businesses being encouraged to explore pooling resources locally to share the costs.. The report also urged the Government to retain the tax-exempt status of EAPs as welfare counselling and explore other financial incentives to encourage employers to prioritise mental health at work.. Ministers, it argued, also needed to explore how to improve the way GPs used fit notes, including examining how to increase ...

The human and monetary costs associated with opioid use by employees are clear but can be potentially offset by implementation of substance abuse programs for employees, including education, employee assistance program (EAP) services, as well as access to confidential treatment. The National Safety Council (2014) recommends that companies consider taking the following actions:. Establish a drug-free work environment enforced by random drug testing. Managers should develop rules with legal counsel and human resources to ensure inclusion of risk management, injury protection, and liability information. Terms should be clearly articulated and distributed in writing to all employees. In developing the companys drug use policy, employers also may want to include a medical review officer to evaluate the policy and results from testing.. Managers need to familiarize themselves with the companys drug policies pertaining to prescription medication use, as well as regulations on fitness for duty and ...
Dr Mitesh Patel (pictured), medical director at Aetna International, said: Part of the reason expats are more susceptible to mental health issues is the absence of the family and friends network they relied on for support back home.. At best, these not only tackle mental health concerns when they arise, but encourage broader employee wellness to address issues before they escalate. ...

The private sector is playing an increasing role in the provision of Primary Health Care through both the for-profit and not-for-profit portions of the sector. In the post-1994 era, the relevance of this sector for the uninsured population has been markedly increased, due to corporate social investment and employee assistance programmes aimed at this population. A dramatic increase in donor-funded, health-related activities, in the HIV and AIDS and tuberculosis fields, has further expanded this sector's involvement in providing Primary Health Care services to a larger proportion of the population. However, this sector has a relative over concentration of skilled human resources, a situation that appears to be immune to all policy attempts to reverse it. Given this reality, serious consideration should be given to finding mechanisms to leverage these resources, so that they can provide services to the larger community. Government proposals, such as those for a social health insurance system, would
Category: Employment Law By Jennifer Milak , August 30, 2015 , Leave Comment. Introduction. Objectives One reason for health disparities between shift and day workers may be that workplace health promotion does not reach shift workers to the same extent as it reaches day workers. This study aimed to investigate the association between shift work and the availability of and participation in workplace health promotion.. Methods We used cross-sectional questionnaire data from a large representative sample of all employed people in Denmark. We also obtained information on working hours, ie, fixed day work (reference) and shift work (four categories), psychosocial work factors, and health behaviors. Results In the general working population, fixed evening and fixed night workers, and employees ...
With a post-structural approach and an analytical focus on processes of governmentality and biopower, this study is concerned with how discourses of health are contextualized in educational practice and interaction between educators and participants in workplace health promotion (WHP) interventions. Of concern are issues of the discursive production, regulation and representation of power, knowledge and subjects as gendered beings in workplace health promotion interventions. The methods for generating data are participant observation, interviews and gathering of documentation pertaining to four different workplace health promotion nterventions. Based on these data, the thesis offers an analysis of the health discourses drawn on in the interventions and the technologies of power and of the self by which the participants are governed and invited to govern themselves in the name of health. It also asks what practices and positions that thus come to be made available or not to the participants. Two ...

Mental health awareness is an indispensable consideration for the modern workplace-especially in the tech industry. The coronavirus pandemic and its associated lockdowns and quarantines forced many tech workers out of their offices and into isolation, but more and more leaders are speaking out about the support their workforces need. Australian tech billionaire Cliff Obrecht, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Canva, is doing his part to lead by example for his home country and the rest of the industry. For starters, Obrecht has instituted an additional week of leave for Canva employees and is offering them 13 counseling sessions through an employee assistance program. Both of these measures are meant to alleviate employee mental health struggles.. Obrecht also recognizes the unique challenges for working parents juggling professional performance and child care, which is one of many reasons Canva has reset its expectations for employee output. For others, especially younger team ...

Burnout is a poorly defined set of symptoms that broadly appear to be increasing across the field of medicine, with EMS personnel being no exception. Burnout has been defined by some sources as physical, mental and emotional exhaustion due to severe stress over extensive periods of time,1,9,10 while other sources have defined it as a state of simply going through the motions of ones practice11 or even as moral injury.12 A noted emergency medicine physician has been quoted as stating that burnout is the response of a normal person to a toxic environment.13 Probably no one all-encompassing explanation exists for the cause of burnout. Even the list quoted above is not exhaustive and many individuals describe more personal reasons for burnout.. Strategies for EMS organizations to manage provider burnout have included the implementation of focus groups,1 Critical Incident Stress Management programs (CISM),14 and Employee Assistance Programs (EAP).15 The intent of these programs includes ...

The enormous human and economic costs associated with occupational stress suggest that initiatives designed to prevent and/or reduce employee stress should be high on the agenda of workplace health promotion (WHP) programmes. Although employee stress is often the target of WHP, reviews of job stress interventions suggest that the common approach to combating job stress is to focus on the individual without due consideration of the direct impacts of working conditions on health as well as the effects of working conditions on employees ability to adopt and sustain healthy behaviours. The purpose of the first part of this paper is to highlight the criticisms of the individual approach to job stress and to examine the evidence for developing strategies that combine both individual and organizational-directed interventions (referred to as the comprehensive approach). There is a risk that WHP practitioners may lose sight of the role that they can play in developing and implementing the ...

Health behavior is presumed to be influenced by organizational factors. This study analyzes how workplace characteristics influence health behavior in terms of participation at health measures. Employees of the German Federal Ministry of Defense were surveyed at the beginning (January / February 2015) and at the end (June 2015) of the trial phase of workplace health promotion (WHP). Differences in participation of characteristic groups were calculated using Pearsons Chi2-Test and T-Test, chances of participation were estimated using multilevel logistic regression. Employees who reported higher satisfaction with work demand participated more often in health measures (aOR: 1.02, 95%-CI = 1.01, 1.04, p | 0.001). Large amount of variance in participation can be attributed to department level. Participation at WHP varies significantly between settings after controlling for individuals characteristics. Thus, working characteristics should be considered as a decisive factor for WHP effectiveness. There is
The most important preventive measures in occupational health care are maintaining workability, sufficient early treatment, and timely rehabilitation.. But if work disability becomes protracted, occupational health care can help employees return to work after sick leave by adjusting the workload to ensure that a returning employee can carry out their job safely and effectively. This requires close cooperation between employees, employers and occupational health care professionals.. In June 2012, legislation took effect whereby the remaining workability of employees must be assessed by occupational health care after 90 working days of sick leave at the latest. Employers, employees and occupational health care professionals must consider how return to work can be best facilitated, for instance by making working times more flexible.. For more on occupational health care see the section on Occupational Health service. ...
Because of their familiarity with facility operations, processes, and potential threats, employees play a critical role in hazard identification and worksite analysis. Employers should consult employees in employee assistance, human resources, occupational safety and health, operations, and security.. Hazard identification should also involve a review of records, including injury and illness logs, as well as employee surveys and individual job hazard analysis.. A worksite analysis of a retail establishment would also consider whether the business has had to address other crimes like shoplifting. It should consider the types of patrons (for example, alcohol or drug users) and physical security factors like building layout and exterior and interior lighting.. ...
