We continue our series on cancer, with an explanation of symptoms and treatments of bowel cancer, which is curable if caught early. Bowel Cancer - also known as colon and colorectal cancer - is the second most common cancer (after lung cancer) that kills people in the UK, causing more deaths every year than breast and cervical cancer put together. Annually, more than 38,000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer and more than 16,000 will die of the disease. It is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the Western world. However, it is one of the most preventable cancers and one of the most curable if it is caught early enough. This year more than one in five diagnoses - more than 7,000 - will be in people of working age. Occupational health nurses could play an important role in helping to save lives from this common cancer, and could help people who have had it get back to work. With better awareness of how to prevent bowel cancer - and acting on that awareness, better uptake of ...

The municipal workers strike is now over. It came to a humiliating end when the union leadership decided to sign an agreement with the employers over the heads of the membership. This agreement will only give the workers a relatively low settlement, far lower than the modest 5,5% originally demanded. It is nothing less than a betrayal against those workers who were ready to struggle. Why did the union leaders call off the strike, when the opinion polls told us that there was a massive (over 80%) support for the struggle? And why did they back down when one union after another (the electricians, the bus-drivers, the commuter-train personnel and the builders for example) declared their intention to strike in solidarity with the municipal workers?

Hospital ward sex mix wont end. Health minister Lord Darzi sparked fury yesterday when he admitted mixed-sex hospital wards will never be completely eliminated. New Labour promised before the 1997 election to stop men and women being treated together. Methods Municipal workers [age 55 to 69 (mean 61.6) years in 1992] who filled out questionnaires in both 1981 and 1992 (N = 4534) were studied. Green tobacco sickness (GTS) is an illness resulting from dermal exposure to dissolved nicotine from wet tobacco leaves; it is characterized by nausea, vomiting, weakness, and dizziness and sometimes fluctuations in blood pressure or heart rate (1-3). On September 14, 1992, the Occupational Health Nurses in Agricultural Communities (OHNAC) project of Kentucky * received reports of 27 cases of GTS. The cases occurred among tobacco harvesters who had sought treatment in several hospital emergency departments in south-central Kentucky during the preceding 2 weeks. This report summarizes the findings of the investigation of these cases. On September 15, OHNAC staff initiated a review of inpatient and emergency department medical records from May 1 through October 2 at five hospitals in the Bowling Green and Elizabethtown areas. The review identified 55 persons in whom GTS, nicotine poisoning, or other illnesses compatible with GTS symptomatology had been diagnosed. On September 25, industrial ...

Occupational health service programmes aim to reduce injury and illness risks. Yet, recent studies indicate that members of the voluntary Farmers Occupational Health Service programme (FOHS) in Finland have filed more occupational injury and disease claims than non-members. To investigate this unexpected finding further, we conducted a safety risk management survey among farmers (n=591). We used multivariable regression to evaluate the differences in injury incident reporting between FOHS members and non-members while controlling for demographic, risk perception, and management practice variables. We found that FOHS members were significantly younger, had larger farms, and had more livestock than non-members. Similar to recent studies, FOHS members reported 1.5 times more injury incidents compared to non-members. However, when controlling for farm size, dependence on one person, physical strain at work, and injuries to family members, there was no significant difference in injury incidence between FOHS

I have spent every summer in the mountains. Hiking up the mountains, over the mountains and literally crawling around inside the mountains. Im an Underground Cave Guide at Rats Nest Cave in Canmore Alberta, Canada and its a very physical job.. Squirming through small holes, rappelling off cliffs into the black abyss, squeezing past thousand-year-old calcite cave formations, Im bound to get a few bruises and scrapes. Yet, Im always prepared with a few key salves and oils to make those bruises heal a little faster and provide some relief from the sting. If we take care of our health by eating healthy, we should also take care of the little (or large!) nicks and cuts we get along the road of life. These bumps and bruises can cause problems on the superficial skin level and if left to fester, may let nasty infections proliferate.. Over the years of adventure and escapade, Ive fine-tuned my first-aid kit to include a variety of powders, oils and salves that promote healing and ward-off ...

Aim Despite Japan being a developed nation, half of its older population does not attend regular health checkups. The aim of the present study was to examine the individual health beliefs and personal recommendations that strongly influence health checkup attendance among community‐dwelling older adults. Methods In 2013, questionnaires were sent to 5401 community‐dwelling older adults who were not receiving long‐term institutionalized care. The response rate was 94.3%. We analyzed response data from 4984 older adults using multiple imputation to manage missing data. Participation in health checkups was defined as having undergone at least one checkup in the past 3 years, and non‐participation as having attended no checkups in this period. Summary. The lower dihydrorhodamine levels in both the resistance trained groups suggested that HDL redox function is better in those with higher muscular fitness irrespective of body weight status. Regular resistance training may be associated with improved HDL redox function and be a potential mechanism by which resistance training decreases cardiovascular disease risk. An interesting finding was the inverse relationship between HDL redox activity and steroid hormones. The lower dihydrorhodamine levels (which means more functional HDL) were associated with higher testosterone levels. These findings indicate that HDL exhibits higher antioxidative potential in strength-trained young men irrespective of overweight/obesity status. There are numerous benefits of resistance training (i.e. enhanced muscle mass, bone mass, strength, body composition, and insulin sensitivity, etc.). I think this study is very interesting and clearly demonstrates another benefit of intense resistance training. ...

Our second bizarre accident: Robert Bradley worked as a gunslinger at the Ghost Town amusement park in North Carolina.. In a skit several times each day, Bradley would be shot and fall to the ground. Of course, the guns used blanks.. Earlier this month, Bradley was playing his usual part, only this time when his opponent fired his gun, Bradley felt pain in his leg.. The next thing he knew, his pant leg was soaked in blood. Bradley says he rolled off to the side to keep from scaring children who were watching. When his co-workers realized what happened, they covered for him and ended the skit ASAP.. Back in a company office, other workers tended to Bradleys leg wound.. This is where Bradleys account of the story starts to differ from that of Ghost Towns owner, Alaska Presley.. Bradley says they tried to find the on-site first-aid staffer but they couldnt. He doubts there was one on staff that day. The park is required to have someone on site at all times with advanced first-aid ...

You must educate yourself on first-aid for your Service Dog. I have a great deal of experience with animals in my previous work rehabilitating abused horses and dogs, but still there were things that I didnt know about first-aid for dogs, and the potential for hazards with having a dog out in a public environment. First and foremost, you must know your dog, observe him/her and know what normal and abnormal behavior is. This is tremendously important for getting prompt medical attention when something is off. Of course, as I mentioned above, people want to give dogs treats so badly they will sneak it to them under tables. There are many foods that are toxic to dogs and the everyday person may not know this. There is also the fact that they are walking essentially barefoot continuously, so paw pad issues can arise. You always have to be on the lookout for fertilizers or toxic chemicals on the floor that could injure them, or that they can lick off their paws, like antifreeze in a parking lot. ...
