Fundamental elements for the provision, organization, and establishment of occupational health and safety (OHS) services for health care workers in rural/remote areas and developing countries include adequate resources, a strong safety culture, recognition of occupational health professionals, collaborative practice, and capability for communication and local risk analysis. First, however, assessment of existing OHS services is required. Adaptable needs assessment tools designed for use by local health care workers should allow progression from analysis to action. Essential elements of these tools include utility, recognition of the surrounding political, health care, and physical environments, and clear definition of the roles and responsibilities of users to act upon findings and implement solutions. Securing adequate financial, physical, and human resources for occupational health and safety requires critical analysis of topics such as health care culture, political motivation, health care ...
The most important preventive measures in occupational health care are maintaining workability, sufficient early treatment, and timely rehabilitation.. But if work disability becomes protracted, occupational health care can help employees return to work after sick leave by adjusting the workload to ensure that a returning employee can carry out their job safely and effectively. This requires close cooperation between employees, employers and occupational health care professionals.. In June 2012, legislation took effect whereby the remaining workability of employees must be assessed by occupational health care after 90 working days of sick leave at the latest. Employers, employees and occupational health care professionals must consider how return to work can be best facilitated, for instance by making working times more flexible.. For more on occupational health care see the section on Occupational Health service. ...

Occupational health and safety refers to the whole series of prevention measures and protection, technical measures, organizational solutions, and procedures that must be adopted by the employer to avoid dangerous situations for their employees. While it is true that total security exists in the absence of dangers, and this is a difficult concept to translate into real life, in the absolute sense, it is also true that the application of safety rules makes the occurrence of adverse events and incidents more difficult, and it always results in a better quality of life. The Occupational Safety and Health Law regulates the employers obligation to determine and assess hazards and specifies possible causes of hazards and objects for risk assessment. It obligates employers to document the result of the risk assessment, the occupational safety measures defined by them and the outcome of their inspection. Although the employer may carry out the risk assessment himself or assign it to qualified personnel, e.g. ...

Objectives: To examine the efficacy of a participatory ergonomics intervention in preventing musculoskeletal disorders among kitchen workers. Participatory ergonomics is commonly recommended to reduce musculoskeletal disorders, but evidence for its effectiveness is sparse. Methods: A cluster randomised controlled trial among the 504 workers of 119 kitchens in Finland was conducted during 2002-2005. Kitchens were randomised to an intervention (n = 59) and control )n = 60) group. The duration of the intervention that guided the workers to identify strenuous work tasks and to seek solutions for decreasing physical and mental workload, was 11 to 14 months. In total, 402 ergonomic changes were implemented. The main outcome measures were the occurrence of and trouble caused by musculoskeletal pain in seven anatomical sites, local fatigue after work, and sick leave due to musculoskeletal disorders. Individual level data were collected by a questionnaire at baseline and every 3 months during the ...

This article demonstrated the appropriateness of research designs other than the RCT for the evaluation of occupational health interventions. Studies wherein these research designs have been applied successfully showed that the most fundamental research question in intervention research could be answered, ie, did change actually occur as a result of the intervention? The designs were either experimental in nature (ie, stepped wedge) or observational (ie, propensity scores, instrumental variables, multiple baseline design, interrupted time series, difference-in-difference, and regression discontinuity). Some of the alternative designs (eg, multiple baseline design) require using more complex statistical models that may contain a relatively large number of parameters in order to account for heterogeneity across clusters. In these cases, larger sample sizes might be needed than would be the case for individually based RCT. Furthermore, in any intervention evaluation, it seems worthwhile to ...

Objectives In the change process, workers work-related well-being is often seriously challenged, and it is not clear to what extent current occupational health systems are capable of dealing with changes in the world of work. This paper determines how the tools used by occupational health services conceptualize changing work as the object of occupational health activity.. Methods The methodology was based on the Cultural Historical Activity Theory, and the data originated from a development intervention project.. Results The tools used in everyday occupational health activity were utilized to construct the object as the interplay between the worker and the loading factors, but the central phenomenon from the well-being point of view seemed to be the disturbances in the work flow.. Conclusions As long as occupational health services construct their objects according to health-study-based tools only, the activity will not be able to contribute to the prevention of work-related well-being problems ...

By David DeMoss. Lets talk about workplace safety. In our last article, we discussed why having a crisis communication strategy is important to help mitigate complications when unexpected issues arise. But what are the protocols, exactly?. Now that COVID-19 is classified as a recordable illness under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is sending notification letters about workplace safety to employers who have received complaints during this time. OSHAs General Duty Clause states that employees will be free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm, meaning that if there is an increased risk of COVID-19 exposure, employers need to take the correct action to maintain the safety of their employees. This includes asking an employee if he or she is experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID-19, potentially measuring an employees body temperature, asking details of an employees ...

Whelp, guess what campers? Jan Brewer just signed this monstrosity into law yesterday. In fact, the version which she signed is actually worse than the originally-introduced version. The amended version attempts to address the concerns that the bill violates a womans privacy by off-handedly stating that the bill does not authorize the religiously-affiliated employer to obtain an employees protected health information or to violate HIPAA.. Pffft.. Setting aside the fact that this bill contravenes President Obamas birth control mandate, and that all women should have access to birth control coverage, how else is a female employee supposed to attest that she seeks contraception coverage for purposes unrelated to birth control without providing her employer private medical information? Its not possible. Simply tossing in boilerplate language to the legislation does nothing to undo the damage and the grave privacy concerns that this bill poses. Moreover, while the bill makes its way through the ...

I have been consulting in risk and safety in Adelaide for over 10 years and am often asked to help revitalise an organisations Safety Management System. Most people contact me about risk and safety issues but people rarely understand either what the problem is or where to start. So they start at systems and this seems to make sense.. An organisation that asked for help has 15 employees doing highly specialised work so they needed compliance to AS/NZS ISO 9001, 14001 and 18001, so they could operate with some Tier 1 building companies.. In my first meeting the questioning started with: What is a safety management system? What does it look like? and, How big does it have to be? There is nothing unusual here, this is generally where I start with small to medium businesses. Most often they simply want to comply but dont know where to start. One thing that stands out is and is common, is that people remain are confused by all the fear mongering and snake oil being peddled in the risk and ...
