Here, utilizing Eomes reporter mice, we identify a subset of adipose group 1 ILC (ILC1) and demonstrate a role for these cells in metabolic disease. Adipose ILC1s were dependent on the transcription factors Nfil3 and T-bet but phenotypically and functionally distinct from adipose mature natural killer (NK) and immature NK cells. Analysis of parabiotic mice revealed that adipose ILC1s maintained long-term tissue residency. Diet-induced obesity drove early production of interleukin (IL)-12 in adipose ...
In the present study we find LSG to have acceptable morbidity-rates and to be an effective procedure for weight loss and resolution of comorbidities. LSG had high resolution rates for T2DM, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, sleep apnea, musculoskeletal pain, snoring, urinary leakage and amenorrhea. The BMI and the prevalence of obesity-related diseases were stable between 12 and 24 months postoperatively. Between 85 and 90% of patients were taking some kind of vitamin and/or mineral supplement at follow-up.. In general, the reported complication rates for LSG are low despite high surgical risks in this patient group [8]. Shi et. al. systematically reviewed major perioperative complications for LSG and found a mean ± SD of 1.17 ± 1.86% for leaks and 3.57 ± 5.15% for bleeding respectively [14]. In order to reduce our leak-rate we have become particularly careful not to use heat-creating instruments close to the stomach wall at the cardia where both leaks occurred. In an attempt to reduce bleeding, ...
Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Prevention … Early childhood is a critical time for obesity prevention. Since 1980, the obesity rate for children ages 6 to 11 years has more than doubled (now at 18%), and the rate for ages 12 to 19 years has quadrupled (now at 21%) (Ogden, Carroll, Kit, & Flegal, 2014). A comprehensive approach is most effective at addressing childhood obesity in schools, especially for elementary and middle school students. 1,2 Scientists know less about what school-based obesity prevention … The researchers said the failure of the programme to influence childhood obesity suggested childhood obesity prevention is unlikely to be achieved by schools alone and that wider influences from the family, community, media and the food industry must also be considered. About the Publication. The alarming rise in severe lifestyle diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and hypertension is commonly attributed to improper dietary habits and poor weight management. As a result, various health organizations have introduced detailed obesity management guidelines, which provide consumers information about the consumption of obesity management drugs. Growing consumer awareness about nutraceuticals that accelerate weight loss is expected to boost sales of obesity management drugs such as Bupropion and Naltrexone in the coming years. However, a mounting number of consumers believing in natural ways to promote weight loss may impact growth prospects of the obesity management market in the coming years.. Obesity is one of the most evil scourges of our modern day sedentary lifestyle. It is extremely common in certain countries in the developed world and has even begun spreading its tentacles into developing countries. In our report, Obesity Management Market: ...
Obesity contributes to Type 2 diabetes by promoting systemic insulin resistance. Obesity causes features of metabolic dysfunction in the adipose tissue that may contribute to later impairments of insulin action in skeletal muscle and liver; these include reduced insulin-stimulated glucose transport, reduced expression of GLUT4, altered expression of adipokines, and adipocyte hypertrophy. Animal studies have shown that expansion of adipose tissue alone is not sufficient to cause systemic insulin resistance in the absence of adipose tissue metabolic dysfunction. To determine if this holds true for humans, we studied the relationship between insulin resistance and markers of adipose tissue dysfunction in non-obese individuals. 32 non-obese first-degree relatives of Type 2 diabetic patients were recruited. Glucose tolerance was determined by an oral glucose tolerance test and insulin sensitivity was measured with the hyperinsulinaemic-euglycaemic clamp. Blood samples were collected and subcutaneous

Studies of obesity and related health conditions among the Bhutanese, one of the largest refugee groups resettled in the United States in the past five years, are limited. This study examined the factors associated with excess body weight (body mass index ≥ 23 kg/m2) and abdominal obesity (waist circumference > 80 cm) in a community-based sample of 18-65 year old Bhutanese refugee women in Northeast Ohio. A Nepali-language questionnaire was used to measure socio-demographic and dietary factors. Height, weight, and waist circumference were measured to define excess body weight and abdominal obesity. The mean (±standard deviation) age of the 108 participants was 36.5 (±12.2) years and length of time in the U.S. was 19.4 (±11.9) months. Overall, 64.8% and 69.4% of the women had excess body weight and abdominal obesity, respectively. Age was significantly associated with both excess body weight (odds ratio: 1.10; 95% confidence interval: 1.05-1.16) and abdominal obesity (1.09; 1.04-1.14).

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine have identified a particular subset of cells that are linked to obesity-associated insulin resistance, and that offer a promising new target for the treatment of diabetes. They showed that depletion of these cells, called CD11c-positive, in obese mice resulted in a reversal of obesity-associated insulin resistance.
Endothelial dysfunction, a pathological feature of obesity, can predict the occurrence of cardiovascular disease. The endothelial function was compared in obese, non-obese, and type 2 diabetic women, and the effect of weight loss on endothelial function in obese premenopausal women was also investigated. METHODS: Twenty type 2 diabetes patients, 35 obese and 20 non-obese non-diabetic subjects were recruited. Both the endothelium-dependent vasodilation (EDV) and endothelium-independent vasodilation (EIV) were measured. The body composition, serum lipid, serum adiponectin and resistin were also measured. Weight loss in obese women was obtained by 6 months of calorific restriction, aerobic exercise and medication (sibutramine or orlistat). RESULTS: EDV was significantly impaired in the type 2 diabetes and obese groups compared to the control group (6.0 +/- 1.3% in diabetes group, 6.7 +/- 3.9% in obese group, 12.4 +/- 4.1% in control group, P < 0.01, respectively). The mean weight loss after 6 ...

Background Polyunsaturated n-3 fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) are reported to protect against high fat diet-induced obesity and inflammation in adipose tissue. Here we aimed to investigate if the amount of sucrose in the background diet influences the ability of n-3 PUFAs to protect against diet-induced obesity, adipose tissue inflammation and glucose intolerance. Methodology/Principal Findings We fed C57BL/6J mice a protein- (casein) or sucrose-based high fat diet supplemented with fish oil or corn oil for 9 weeks. Irrespective of the fatty acid source, mice fed diets rich in sucrose became obese whereas mice fed high protein diets remained lean. Inclusion of sucrose in the diet also counteracted the well-known anti-inflammatory effect of fish oil in adipose tissue, but did not impair the ability of fish oil to prevent accumulation of fat in the liver. Calculation of HOMA-IR indicated that mice fed high levels of proteins remained insulin sensitive, whereas insulin sensitivity was reduced in the obese mice
Obesity is associated with breast white adipose tissue (WAT) inflammation, elevated levels of the estrogen biosynthetic enzyme, aromatase, and systemic changes that have been linked to the pathogenesis of breast cancer. Here, we determined whether metabolic obesity, including changes in breast biology and systemic effects, occurs in a subset of women with normal body mass index (BMI). Breast WAT and fasting blood were collected from 72 women with normal BMI (,25 kg/m2) undergoing mastectomy for breast cancer risk reduction or treatment. WAT inflammation was defined by the presence of crown-like structures of the breast (CLS-B) which are composed of dead or dying adipocytes surrounded by macrophages. Severity of inflammation was measured as CLS-B/cm2. The primary objective was to determine whether breast WAT inflammation is associated with aromatase expression and activity. Secondary objectives included assessment of circulating factors and breast adipocyte size. Breast WAT inflammation was ...
In our obese normotensive subjects, plasma norepinephrine was 356.2±43 pg/mL and MSNA was 50.0±5.1 bursts per 100 heart beats, thereby displaying values much greater than those found in age-matched, lean normotensive individuals.7 15 20 After a 16-week hypocaloric diet with normal sodium content, however, body weight was effectively reduced, and this reduction was accompanied by plasma norepinephrine and MSNA levels that were markedly less than the original values (a reduction of 28.4% and 35.5%, respectively). This provides evidence that the sympathetic activation that accompanies obesity is reversible when the overweight condition is corrected by dietary treatment. This can be obtained through central sympathetic suppression in the absence of any concomitant change in dietary sodium intake.. In a previous study on obese normotensive individuals, we found the baroreceptor modulation of heart rate and MSNA to be blunted and suggested a baroreflex impairment as a possible cause of the ...
Obesity is an established risk factor for development and progression of kidney disease. Intentional weight loss in people without kidney disease results in an improvement in diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol, cardiovascular disease and overall death rates. The investigators do not know whether this holds true in patients with chronic kidney disease. In the proposed pilot study, the investigators will analyze if kidney function stabilizes after weight loss interventions in obese kidney disease patients and the mechanisms that might mediate this beneficial effect. If weight loss in kidney disease patients results in stabilization of kidney function, this would provide an opportunity to conduct a long-term prospective study to analyze the sustained benefits of weight loss in kidney disease patients.. Specific aim 1:. To ascertain the effects of lifestyle modification or bariatric surgery on urinary protein excretion and renal function among obese CKD patients.. Hypothesis: Weight loss attained ...

Accumulating evidence indicates that defective efferocytosis contributes to the development of chronic inflammatory diseases. Obesity is characterized by the accumulation of dead adipocytes and inflammatory macrophages in the adipose tissue leading to obesity-related metabolic syndrome. Background: Obesity is a costly condition that can reduce quality of life and increases the risk for many serious chronic diseases and premature death. The U.S. Surgeon General issued the Call to Action to Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity in 2001, and in 2007, no state had met the Healthy People 2010 objective to reduce obesity prevalence among adults to 15%.. Methods: CDC used 2009 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey data to update estimates of national and state-specific obesity prevalence. Obesity was calculated based on self-reported weight and height and defined as body mass index (weight [kg] / height [m]2) ≥30.. Results: Overall self-reported obesity prevalence in the United States was 26.7%. Non-Hispanic blacks (36.8%), Hispanics (30.7%), those who did not graduate from high school (32.9%), and persons aged 50--59 years (31.1%) and 60--69 years (30.9%) were disproportionally affected. By state, obesity prevalence ranged from 18.6% in Colorado to 34.4% in ...
The intestinal immune system is emerging as an important contributor to obesity-related insulin resistance, but the role of intestinal B cells in this context is unclear. Here, we show that high fat diet (HFD) feeding alters intestinal IgA+ immune cells and that IgA is a critical immune regulator of glucose homeostasis. Obese mice have fewer IgA+ immune cells and less secretory IgA and IgA-promoting immune mediators. HFD-fed IgA-deficient mice have dysfunctional glucose metabolism, a phenotype that can be recapitulated by adoptive transfer of intestinal-associated pan-B cells. Mechanistically, IgA is a crucial link that controls intestinal and adipose tissue inflammation, intestinal permeability, microbial encroachment and the composition of the intestinal microbiome during HFD. Current glucose-lowering therapies, including metformin, affect intestinal-related IgA+ B cell populations in mice, while bariatric surgery regimen alters the level of fecal secretory IgA in humans. These findings identify

The high prevalence of disease and associated weight loss at older ages limits the validity of prospective cohort studies examining the association between body mass index (BMI) and mortality. I examined mortality associated with excess weight using maximum BMI-a measure that is robust to confounding by illness-induced weight loss. Analyses were carried out on US never-smoking adults ages 50-84 using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (1988-1994 and 1999-2004) linked to the National Death Index through 2006. Cox models were used to estimate hazard ratios for mortality according to BMI at time of survey and at maximum. Using maximum BMI, hazard ratios for overweight (BMI, 25.0-29.9 kg/m2), obese class 1 (BMI, 30.0-34.9 kg/m2) and obese class 2 (BMI, 35.0 kg/m2 and above) relative to normal weight (BMI, 18.5-24.9 kg/m2) were 1.28 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.89-1.84), 1.67 (95% CI, 1.15-2.40), and 2.15 (95% CI, 1.47-3.14), respectively. In 2016, male obesity prevalence for Ireland was 25.1 %. Male obesity prevalence of Ireland increased from 13.8 % in 1997 to 25.1 % in 2016 growing at an average annual rate of 3.20 %. Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health. A crude population measure of obesity is the body mass index (BMI), a persons weight (in kilograms) divided by the square of his or her height (in metres). A person with a BMI of 30 or more is generally considered obese. A person with a BMI equal to or more than 25 is considered overweight. Overweight and obesity are major risk factors for a number of chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Once considered a problem only in high income countries, overweight and obesity are now dramatically on the rise in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in urban settings.
Colorado has the lowest adult obesity rate in the nation, according to a report released Monday by the non-profit Trust for Americas Health. But the states obesity rate is higher last year, up to 17.6 percent from 16.9 percent. Thats in tune with trends across the county. The report, tilted F as in Fat: How Obesity Policies are Failing in America, found no states had a decrease in obesity rates over the past year but 31 states experienced an increase. For 22 of those states it was the second year in row that obesity rates increased. The researchers looked at state and federal policies relating to health and obesity and found many to be lacking or ineffective. The country needs to develop a plan for combating obesity that is in proportion to the scope and depth of the problem, the researchers stated. This will require focusing on strategies that will work on a wide scale. The question is, is America willing to make the commitment needed to return to better health?. continued…. ...

According to the 2012 Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Card on Physical Activity, Canadian kids are sedentary for 63 per cent of their free time after school and on weekends, even though 92 per cent of those surveyed said they would choose playing with friends over watching TV. Those in grades 6 to 12 are spending an average of seven hours and 48 minutes per day in front of screens.. So - what will it take to get kids to limit their screen time to two hours a day, when many nwo spend three or four times that amount of time sitting in front of a screen?. We need to make a normative shift to progressively restore movement while reducing recreational screen time, according to Mark Tremblay, director of the Healthy Active Living and Obesity Research Group at the Childrens Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Obviously no one has figured out how, but we must pursue this challenge with vigor, resolve, creativity and persistence. At the same time we need to work with the screen industry to design creative ...
Today, childhood obesity is considered a serious and widespread struggle faced by many children around the world. In fact, childhood obesity has become an epidemic that has tripled or quadrupled in the last 40 to 50 years affecting almost 1 in 5 children. Children who are overweight are at a higher risk of suffering from hypertension, gastrointestinal problems, heart diseases and type II diabetes. Of course, on top of these health issues, obese children may further suffer from the emotional distress. Simply being labeled as fat, obese children can easily suffer from low self-esteem and depression.. When it comes to childhood obesity, parents in particular are required to take full responsibility for controlling their childs weight and must not settle with the idea that their child will later outgrow this. A great misconception among parents is that an obese child is healthier the more robust they are. This is typical amongst parents who are in denial regarding their childs weight management ...

We therefore aimed to establish prevalence and features of impaired fasting glucose (IFG), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) in a large cohort of Italian overweight/obese children and adolescents and to assess the validity of standard OGTT in the paediatric population. METHODS: This is a 1-year observational study conducted on 736 (535 overweight/obese and 201 normal weight) consecutive paediatric patients attending the outpatient clinic of Paediatric Endocrine Unit. Clinical and biochemical parameters were collected for all participants. All overweight/obese subjects underwent OGTT. RESULTS: We observed a high prevalence of IFG (7.66%), more than twice that observed in other European children, but a low prevalence of IGT (3.18%) and T2D ...

N2 - Background: We recently examined the distribution of abdominal fat, dietary intake and biochemical data in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and found that non-obese NAFLD patients did not necessarily exhibit insulin resistance and/or dysregulated secretion of adipocytokines. However, dietary cholesterol intake was superabundant in non-obese patients compared with obese patients, although total energy and carbohydrate intake was not excessive. Therefore, excess cholesterol intake appears to be one of the main factors associated with NAFLD development and liver injury. Methods. We reviewed a year of follow-up data of ...
Obesity and diabetes are major health problems in the United States. The primary aim of this study is to examine the association between obesity and diabetes and to estimate the cost of diabetes linked to obesity in the Appalachian region. A system of simultaneous equations approach, and a logit estimation are employed for the analyses. Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) surveys for 2001 and 2009 are the main sources of data. Both county-level and individual-level data are used for the analyses. The simultaneous approach at county-level based on the changes of income, employment, obesity, and diabetes reveals that obesity increases diabetes, but diabetes does not have an effect on obesity. The counties with high initial levels of obesity had less obesity growth but more diabetes growth. Increasing income impacts negatively on diabetes growth. Logit analysis indicates that obesity significantly increases the risk of diabetes of adults in Appalachia. Besides, being employed, higher income
This study examines the causal role of disrupted BCAA homeostasis in obesity-associated IR and the therapeutic potential of targeting the elevated amounts of BCAAs and BCKAs. The unbiased integrative genomic analyses reveal a specific and robust association between the BCAA catabolic pathway and obesity-related IR in both human and mouse populations. In genetically obese mice, characteristic BCKD deficiency and BCAA/BCKA buildup accompany the suppression of BCAA catabolic genes at the pathway level. Correcting this BCAA catabolic defect abolishes BCAA/BCKA elevation and attenuates IR in obese ob/ob mice, supporting a causal role for the BCAA catabolic defect in IR onset in obese mice. Furthermore, reducing protein (and thus BCAA) intake effectively reduces BCAA/BCKA abundances and improves insulin sensitivity, whereas BCAA supplementation increases BCAA/BCKA abundances and promotes IR in ob/ob mice. These results together demonstrate the pathogenic role of elevated BCAAs/BCKAs in IR in obese ...

Curbing the rise of obesity rates among Americans has overtaken smoking as the putative public health priority, with government and non-profit health agencies promoting frequent anti-obesity warnings. One of the latest reports, titled F as in Fat: How Obesity Policies Are Failing In America 2008, released last month by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Trust for Americas Health, declares obesity to be one of the most serious health problems in the U.S. The report notes that adult obesity rates have doubled since 1980 - from 15 percent to 30 percent, that two-thirds of adults are now either overweight or obese, that childhood obesity rates have nearly tripled since 1980 - from 6.5 percent to 16.3 percent, and that the obesity epidemic adds billions of dollars in health care costs. The report castigates federal, state and local governments for failing to address the obesity epidemic in proportion to the threat that it poses.. Counterposing the prevailing war on obesity is a body of ...
Background: Obesity can be defined using body mass index (BMI) or waist (abdominal obesity). Little information exists regarding its prevalence and determinants in Switzerland. Hence, we assessed the levels of obesity as defined by BMI or waist circumference in a Swiss population-based sample. Methods: Cross-sectional, population-based non-stratified random sample of 3,249 women and 2,937 men aged 35-75 years living in Lausanne, Switzerland. Overall participation rate was 41%. Results: In men, the prevalences of overweight (BMI ≥25 kg/m²) and obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m²) were 45.5% and 16.9%, respectively, higher than in women (28.3% and 14.3%, respectively). The prevalence of abdominal obesity (waist ≥102 in men and ≥88 cm in women) was higher in women than in men (30.6% vs. 23.9%). Obesity and abdominal obesity increased with age and decreased with higher educational level in both genders. In women, the prevalence of obesity was lower among former and current smokers, ...
The rising prevalence of overweight and obesity in children and teenagers is a major challenge for public health. Obesity is a complex and heterogeneous disorder, affected by many interacting genetic and non-genetic factors. The aim of this article was to focus on the environmental risk factors for childhood obesity. Among different factors contributing to an increase in BMI, we highlighted the role of exposure to cigarette smoke, DDT, bisphenol A, pesticides, and noise. The correlation between exposure to environmental toxins during prenatal period and obesity development in later life was underlined. According to obesogenic environment hypothesis, some features of distal and proximal neighbourhood also have a pivotal impact on children's behaviour and may contribute to increasing the risk for overweight. The area of residence (urban or rural) may affect access to sports facilities or other opportunities for physical activity. Therefore, for designing adequate prophylaxis, it is essential ...
BACKGROUND/AIM: To study the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS), insulin resistance (IR) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in overweight/obese children with clinical hepatomegaly and/or raised alanine aminotransferase (ALT).. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-three overweight and obese children, aged 2-13 years, presenting with hepatomegaly and/or raised ALT, were studied for the prevalence of MS, IR and NAFLD. Laboratory analysis included fasting blood glucose, serum insulin, serum triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) and liver biochemical profile, in addition to liver ultrasound and liver biopsy.. RESULTS: Twenty patients (60.6%) were labeled with MS. IR was present in 16 (48.4%). Fifteen (44%) patients had biopsy-proven NAFLD. Patients with MS were more likely to have NAFLD by biopsy (P=0.001). Children with NAFLD had significantly higher body mass index, waist circumference, ALT, total ...

BUFFALO, N.Y. - One of the serious health consequences of obesity is elevated blood pressure (BP), a particular problem in children because research has found that high BP in children usually follows them into adulthood, carrying with it a wide range of possible negative consequences.. Even modest elevations in the BP of adolescents, according to recent research, can pose cardiovascular problems later in life.. A systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies of the effect of child obesity intervention programs on blood pressure has found that whether such programs prevented obesity or not, many of them reduced BP in children. It also found that the most effective programs in this regard promoted both healthy eating and physical activity.. The study, one of the first of its kind, Effect of Childhood Obesity Prevention Programs on BP: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis, was led by epidemiologist Youfa Wang, MD, PhD, of the University at Buffalo and conducted by researchers from ...
The prevalence of overweight and obesity among children (,5 years) in Cameroon, based on weight-for-height index, has doubled between 1991 and 2006. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of overweight and obesity among children aged 6 months to 5 years in Cameroon in 2011. Four thousand five hundred and eighteen children (2205 boys and 2313 girls) aged between 6 to 59 months were sampled in the 2011 Demographic Health Survey (DHS) database. Body Mass Index (BMI) z-scores based on WHO 2006 reference population was chosen to estimate overweight (BMI z-score , 2) and obesity (BMI for age , 3). Regressionanalyses were performed to investigate risk factors of overweight/obesity.. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 8% (1.7% for obesity alone). Boys were more affected by overweight than girls with a prevalence of 9.7% and 6.4% respectively. The highest prevalence of overweight was observed in the Grassfield area (including people iving in West and North-West regions) ...
In the summer of 2006, the Foundation for Healthy Communities conducted chart reviews in 25 primary care physician practices across New Hampshire to document the prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity among children ages 6-12 years old. In total, 1453 medical records were reviewed, and the New Hampshire Childhood Obesity Report revealed that 32.8% of children in this age group were overweight or obese. Further, we found that there was an opportunity to improve prevention and treatment services for childhood overweight not only in pediatric and family health care practices, but also in NH communities.. In an effort to assist communities in addressing childhood obesity, we established the NH Childhood Obesity Expert Panel in the Fall of 2006. Its charge was to develop practical recommendations for New Hampshire communities that wish to implement strategies for the prevention of childhood obesity. The panels recommendations were released in spring 2007 and are outlined in the report, ...
Downloadable! There are several ways to measure fatness and obesity, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. The primary measure for tracking the prevalence of obesity has historically been body mass index (BMI). This paper compares long-run trends in the prevalence of obesity when obesity is defined using skinfold thickness instead of body mass index (BMI), using data from the full series of U.S. National Health Examination Surveys. The results indicate that when one uses skinfold thicknesses rather than BMI to define obesity, the rise in the prevalence of obesity is detectable ten to twenty years earlier. This underscores the importance of examining multiple measures of fatness when monitoring or otherwise studying obesity.

Horodynski has spent several years working with new mothers to help promote appropriate and beneficial feeding styles and practices known as infant-centered feeding in order to reduce obesity risk.. One of the key factors contributing to childhood obesity is poor feeding practices during infancy, she said during an earlier study. Because mothers are primarily responsible for infant feeding and have profound influences on growth patterns, they need support in learning how to appropriately feed their infants.. Since rapid weight gain during infancy is one of the strongest risk factors for obesity later in childhood, her new research - Tools for Teen Moms: Reducing Infant Obesity Risk - will focus on early intervention strategies that are necessary to promote beneficial infant-centered feeding among these adolescent women. These strategies will include text message reminders, an infant feeding website, and a Facebook page to increase feeding through daily behavioral challenge ...
Summary Obesity is considered a worldwide pandemic. Morbidly obese patients are at risk of developing comorbidity such as diabetes mellitus type 2, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. The mechanisms behind the development of such complications in morbidly obese patients are still not fully understood, but low-grade inflammation and visceral adiposity are both involved. Effective treatment that leads to a significant weight loss can improve and/or repeal these comorbidities. In this prospective study we have investigated what impact lifestyle intervention followed by bariatric surgery has on markers of glucose metabolism, inflammation and coagulation. 134 morbidly obese patients (who underwent lifestyle intervention followed by bariatric surgery) and 36 lean subjects (admitted for elective laparoscopic procedures) were included in 4 different studies. The morbidly obese patients were followed one year after surgery. The 36 lean subjects served as a control group. We have shown that markers ...
In this study, we found that moderate weight loss achieved by combining a hypocaloric diet with orlistat, compared with identical weight loss achieved by a hypocaloric diet and placebo, improves endothelium-dependent vasodilatation in previously gestational diabetic obese women. Although there was some increase in endothelium-independent vasodilatory responses, the changes in responses to SNP by weight loss were not significant between the two groups, and when expressed per muscle mass, there was no change in endothelium-independent blood flow responses. Within the orlistat group, the change in the blood flow response to ACh by weight loss and ACh-stimulated blood flow after weight loss correlated with the change in LDL cholesterol (Fig. 4), but not with changes in body composition or other metabolic parameters. The latter data suggest that even modest decreases in LDL cholesterol may favorably influence endothelial function in obese women, whereas modest weight loss is ineffective in this ...
In this population-based study of Canadian adults, neither breakfast consumption (versus non-consumption) nor the type of breakfast consumed (whether or not RTEC was included) was consistently associated with BMI or the prevalence of overweight/obesity. For the overall adult population, mean BMI of breakfast non-consumers and those who consumed other breakfasts was almost identical (27.1 ± 0.3 and 27.1 ± 0.1 kg/m2, respectively). While mean BMI of RTEC breakfast consumers (26.5 kg/m2) was significantly lower than that of other breakfast consumers, the difference of 0.6 kg/m2 reflects a difference of only 1.7 kg at the mean population height of 1.68 m. Furthermore, the prevalence of overweight/obesity and the OR for being overweight/obese did not differ among the three breakfast groups for the adult population as a whole: Overweight/obesity prevalence was close to 60 % in all groups, and adjusted OR (and 95 % CI) for consumers of RTEC breakfasts and other breakfasts were 0.95 (0.72, 1.26) and ...

Overweight/obesity has gained more and more attention from healthcare professionals in developing and developed countries (Kopelman, 2007; Lin, Strong, Tsai, Lin, & Fung, 2018). The problem also exists in children: the combined global prevalence of childhood overweight/obesity rose by 47.1% from 1980 to 2013 (Lin, Griffiths, & Pakpour, 2018). In brief, the prevalence of overweight/obesity was over 20% in developed countries; over 15% in developing countries in 2013 (Lin, Griffiths, et al., 2018). Taiwan bears the burden of rising prevalence in overweight and obesity among children and adolescents: Over 20% of Taiwanese children and adolescents suffer from overweight or obesity (Kuo et al., 2014; Lin, Su, Wang, & Ma, 2013). Childhood overweight/obesity is linked to cardiovascular problems, type 2 diabetes and adulthood obesity (Brisbois, Farmer, & McCargar, 2012). In addition to the physical consequences of overweight/obesity for children, psychological issues (e.g., high levels of depression and ...
Civil servants are disposing individuals to sedentary lifestyle and, may lead to overweight and obesity. Thus, the purpose of the study was to identify factors associated with overweight and obesity among employees in Ethiopia ministries. Respondents who were age 45 years and above [AOR = 11.56, 95% CI 3.75-35.56], 35-44 years [AOR = 11.17, 95% CI 3.89-32.06] and 25-34 [AOR = 3.08 95% CI 1.07-8.83] were more likely to be overweight/obesity as compared to those who were in age category of 18-24 years. The study also found that ever alcohol consumption [AOR = 2.27, 95% CI 1.23, 4.16] was associated with increased risk of overweight and obesity as compared to non-consumers. Another risk factor was adult who did not practice ten minutes walk per day, more likely to overweight and obesity [AOR = 11.28, 95% CI 5.96-21.36] as compared to the counter parts. Similarly, participants who did not involve physical activity (sport) [AOR = 2.42% 95% CI 1.36-4.30] were 2.42 times more likely to overweight and obesity
The N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is used clinically for the diagnosis of heart failure (HF). NT-proBNP is also useful for predicting future HF in the general community. However, NT-proBNP levels are known to be lower among obese compared with nonobese individuals despite the increased HF risk associated with obesity. Consequently, the utility of NT-proBNP levels for HF prediction among individuals with obesity is unclear. Therefore, in this analysis of 12 230 individuals without baseline HF in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study, we quantified and compared the risk associations of NT-proBNP with incident HF across body mass index categories. Despite a weak inverse association between NT-proBNP and body mass index (r=-0.10), higher NT-proBNP was associated with increased HF risk and improved HF risk prediction in all body mass index categories. However, because of higher HF rates associated with obesity, at each level of NT-proBNP, higher body mass index ...

Like other nations experiencing rapid industrialization, urbanization and a nutrition transition, there is concern in Malaysia of a possible escalation in the prevalence of overweight and obesity. In 1996, the National Health and Morbidity Survey reported a 16.6% and 4.4% prevalence of overweight and obesity, respectively. In the following decade, there have been several national and community surveys on overweight and obesity in Malaysia. The objective of this systematic review is to describe the trend from 1996 to 2009 in the prevalence of overweight and obesity in adults in Malaysia nationally and by gender, age and race. Results indicate that there has been a small rise in overweight adults in the years 1996, 2003 and 2006 (20.7%, 26.7% and 29.1%) and a much more dramatic increase in obesity in 1996, 2003, 2004 and 2006 (5.5%, 12.2%, 12.3% and 14.0%). Evidence showed a greater risk for overweight and obesity among women compared with men. Based on the highest-quality studies, overweight and ...
Subjects were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 energy-restricted diets. The compositions of the 4 diets were 1) low-fat, average-protein; 2) low-fat, high-protein; 3) high-fat, average-protein; and 4) high-fat, high protein. All diets were designed to include at least 20 grams of dietary fiber, daily. Each participants diet reflected a 750 Calorie per day reduction in energy needs. Measurements were taken at the start of the trial and 6 months later. Nutrient intake, including total fiber, was estimated from food records and dietary recalls.. The results from this analysis are consistent with other studies that found dietary fiber could be helpful for those seeking to lose weight. Change in fiber intake from the beginning of the study to 6 months was the strongest predictor of weight loss. On average, an increase of fiber by 4 grams per day over what participants consumed before the study was associated with an additional 3 ¼ pounds of weight loss over 6 months. This association between fiber ...
Overweight and obesity are an increasingly prevalent nutritional disorder among adolescents and its prevention is a public health priority. The study aims to know the prevalence of obesity among school going adolescents and to assess the associated factors. The present study was a cross sectional study conducted in 12 schools of Bhubaneswar from July 2013 to December 2013. 1800 adolescents of 10-16 years (Class VI to X) were included in the study. The overall prevalence of overweight and obesity among school going adolescents was found to be 27.8% (overweight-16.4% and obesity-11.4%). Overweight/ Obesity was significantly higher in adolescents with working mothers, joint family, having less than 2 siblings, not doing regular exercise, watching television more than 2 hours/day, playing computer games, consuming junk food regularly and not playing of outdoor games. There is a need for periodic screening for overweight in schools followed by counselling of parents of overweight adolescents.
Objective: To (1) examine the opinions of medical staff working in spinal cord injury (SCI) centres (SCICs); (2) evaluate their knowledge, attitudes and practices towards obesity prevention and management; (3) report the number of beds and dietitians available at each SCIC. Methods: A 37-item questionnaire was sent to 23 SCICs in the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium and the Republic of Ireland between September 2012 and January 2013. Results: Eighteen SCICs returned the questionnaires for analysis. All respondents stated that they had an interest in obesity treatment but only 2.3% of the respondents received training in obesity management. Sixty-one percent of staff did not consider body mass index (BMI) to be appropriate for use in SCI patients and subsequently less than half of the respondents use BMI routinely. The majority of respondents reported that they are confident in dealing with overweight (74.5%) and obese (66.1%) SCI adults, less than half (44.1%) are confident in treating overweight ...
Obesity is defined as an excess of body weight, relative to height, that is attributed to an abnormally high proportion of body fat. A common metric to calculate presence and degree of obesity is body mass index (BMI). The mathematical formula is for BMI is weight in kilograms / (height in meters)². For adults, a BMI of 25-29.9 represents an overweight status, and a BMI over 30 corresponds to obesity. While there is no scientifically accepted definition of obesity in children and adolescents, pediatric overweight is defined as a BMI-for-age meeting or exceeding the 95th percentile; the 85th percentile marks the point at which a child or adolescent becomes at risk for overweight. Overweight and obesity, which are alarmingly on the rise among children, adolescents, and adults, are established risk factors for a number of medical complications and diseases including diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, and sleep apnea. Obesity is not an eating disorder, but it can be associated with ...
Our main finding was that weight loss at 12 weeks, age, mental HRQL and employment status had direct effects on weight loss at 1 year. 12 week weight loss had the strongest direct effect.. The impact of initial weight loss on long term weight loss is well described in several studies [19-21]. In a recent American study of 1,685 multi ethnic obese participants, weight loss at 6 months was found to be a consistent predictor of weight loss after 36 months across gender and ethnic groups [22]. The same was reported in a Swedish study of 247 participants undergoing a two-step weight loss program lasting for 8-10 months. The strongest factor for predicting weight loss in the Step II treatment was Step I weight loss. Each 1 kg weight loss in Step I predicted 13% of the variation in Step II weight loss [23]. The randomized multi center Look Ahead-study found that the larger a participants weight loss was after the first year, the larger their loss at year 4. The odds of achieving a loss ≥ 10% of ...

Grouping by waist circumference, the OSAHS rate were 7.83% (9/115) in normal group and 26.29% (184/700) in centricity obesity (X2=18.623, p,0.01). The severe OSAHS rate was 2.61% (3/115) in normal group and 10.57% (74/700) in centricity obesity (X2=7.32, p,0.01).. 4. The moderate to severe OSAHS rate was increased with BMI in female patients (X2=5.846, p,0.05). It was increased with BMI and waist circumference in males (p,0.01).. ...
Introduction: Whether high sodium intake, assessed by 24-hour urinary sodium excretion (24hrUNaEx), is associated with altered glycemic control, evaluated by hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C), in the African American population remains unknown. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between 24hrUNaEx and HbA1C in young overweight/obese African Americans.. Methods: A total of 106 apparently healthy overweight/obese drug-naïve African Americans were recruited. Subjects were asked to discard the first morning urine specimen and collect all remaining urine specimens for next 24-hr including a urine specimen of the following morning. HbA1C was measured from venous blood by ion-exchange chromatography.. Results: The means (± SE) of age and body mass index (BMI) of subjects (67%, 71/106 females) were 24.30±0.82 years and 35.51±0.70 kg/m2, respectively. Average 24hrUNaEx was 172.17±7.09 mEq/L/d, which corresponded to average sodium intake of 3.96±1.63 g/d. Pearsons correlation analysis revealed a positive ...
