Cure characteristics and mechanical properties of short nylon fiber reinforced acrylonitrile butadiene rubber-reclaimed rubber composites were studied. Minimum torque, (maximum-minimum) torque and cure rate increased with fiber concentration. Scorch time and cure time decreased by the addition of fibers. Properties like tensile strength, tear strength, elongation at break, abrasion loss and heat build up were studied in both orientations of fibers. Tensile and tear properties were enhanced by the addition of fibers and were higher in the longitudinal direction. Simultaneous chemical copolymerization and oxidation of pyrrole and N-methylpyrrole by bromine and iodine has been carried out. The composition of the copolymers can be effectively controlled by varying the monomer feed ratio. From elemental analysis the copolymer composition and the monomer reactivity ratios have been determined. As the copolymer composition changes, the IR absorption spectra show changes in the intensity of certain bands. In bromine-induced polymerization, the electrical conductivity, thermal stability, and bromine content of the copolymer complex decrease with increase in N-methylpyrrole fraction. To investigate the biochemical and cellular basis for the rise in polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) count during epinephrine administration, PMN from subjects receiving epinephrine were studied for their capacity to adhere to nylon wool fibers and endothelial cell monolayers. After administration of epinephrine, the PMN count increased by 80% at 5 min, and isolated PMN adherence to nylon fibers fell from a base line of 44±2-18±3%. The use of heat treatment to improve solute rejection and fouling resistance of a polyamide reverse osmosis (RO) membrane was investigated in this study. Heat treatment was carried out by immersing the membrane samples in Milli-Q water at 70 °C for a specific duration. Heat treatment (24 h) reduced the pure water permeability from 4.1 to 2.8 L/m2hbar but improved conductivity rejection from 95.5 to 97.0%. As a result, a correlation was observed between changes in the two parameters. Marginal changes in the membrane surface characteristics (i.e. zeta potential, hydrophobicity, chemistry and roughness) were observed as a result of heat treatment. Heat treatment significantly improved the fouling resistance property of the RO membrane. When the secondary effluent was filtrated at an elevated permeated flux, the virgin RO membrane exhibited 30% flux decline while the heat-treated membrane showed only 12% flux decline. The longitudinal strength may be maintained by using selected plastics, or by using nylon fibers or other materials for reinforcement. MATERIALS AND METHODS We produced a 332-membered human cDNA array on nylon membranes tailored for studies of angiogenesis and tumorigenesis in reproductive disease. We tested the system for reproducibility using a novel statistical approach for analysis of array data and employed the arrays to investigate gene expression alterations in ovarian cancer.
