Mrs Garcia is visiting her husband in the intensive care unit (ICU). He is in a coma after a motor vehicle crash that resulted in head injury. She sits in the room hour after hour, rocking in the hard small chair, saying little, and wringing her hands in worry. Each time the alarms go off on the monitor, she startles in a vain attempt to locate the source of the sound and its meaning. She pushes the call light when the nurse does not attend to the alarms immediately, irritating the nurse with the frequent calls. Mrs Garcias fear is palpable. When asked by the nurse, Is there anything I can do for you? she says simply no in an unconvincing voice, with a wanting, lost look, unable to find the words to express her needs.. ...

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and second leading cause of death in American men. Patients with localized prostate cancer may experience unique and multidimensional symptoms that are distressful from treatment and thereafter. This cross-sectional correlational study aimed to investigate the relationships among stress, symptoms, symptom distress, and symptom self-management and identify the effective strategies of symptom self-management in men with localized prostate cancer following prostatectomy or radiation therapy.Eight saliva samples and 3 questionnaires (Perceived Stress Scale, Symptom Indexes, and Strategy and Effectiveness of Symptom Self-Management) were obtained from each participant between 1 and 3 months following their first prostate cancer treatment. The sample consisted of 53 men with localized prostate cancer. Mean salivary cortisol concentrations for the entire sample ranged from 0.3 to 0.08 ug/dL. Cortisol was secreted in a circadian rhythm with ...

Identifying Objects using Cluster and Concept Analysis ArieVanDeursen and TobiasKuipers. In 21st International Conference on Software Engineering, ICSE-99, 1999, ACM, pp 246-255. http://www.cwi.nl/~arie/papers/split.pdf Abstract Many approaches to support (semi-automatic) identification of objects in LegacySystems take the data structures as starting point for candidate classes. Unfortunately, legacy data structures tend to grow over time, and may contain many unrelated fields at the time of migration. We propose a method for ObjectIdentification by semi-automatically restructuring the legacy data structures. Issues involved include the selection of record fields of interest, the identification of procedures actually dealing with such fields, and the construction of coherent groups of fields and procedures into candidate classes. We explore the use of ClusterAnalysis and ConceptAnalysis for the purpose of object identification, and we illustrate their effect on a 100,000 lines of code COBOL ...

It is often claimed that the early phases of media and communication studies were dominated by a linear conception of communication, modelled as a process of transmission. The hegemony of this model may have been exaggerated - it never prevailed in studies of interpersonal communication, for instance - but it has undeniably provided a favourite target for critics of various stripes. While some communication theorists have proposed elaborations of the well-known sender-message-receiver schema, others have argued for more radical revisions of modelling rooted in e.g. semiotics, constructivism, and the ritual view of communication. At the same time, scepticism regarding the very notion of a model of communication has grown stronger; and in recent decades, the focus has often switched from first-level conceptions to second-order meta-models of the constellations of communication theory.. What is the status and relevance of communication models today? The proliferation of new forms of mediated ...
AB: The systematic study of human interactions with plants is in its infancy. One approach to fostering growth in the field is to borrow appropriate theoretical perspectives and research methods from a closely allied discipline, such as environmental psychology. This presentation suggests a potential set of research directions and methods for the study of visual person-plant interactions that borrows from theory and research on human responses to large scale outdoor environments. Theoretical perspectives in this area converge to predict that people should respond more positively to outdoor environment rich in natural elements, such as trees, shrubbery, grasses and other vegetation, as opposed to urban environments lacking nature. Self-reports of aesthetic preferences and psychophysiological studies of responses to environmental surrogates have supported this prediction, as well as suggesting that natural environments may have stress-reducing effects. One general approach, then, to the study of ...

Background: There has been different interpretation of kosmotropes and chaotropes without concern for the physicochemical characteristics of the macromolecule and for the link between Hofmeister phenomena with solution structure. The objectives of this research are: 1) To investigate different ways of determining activity coefficient and activity of ionic osmolyte 2), to present a common theoretical basis for the interaction between reaction mixture components and Hofmeister phenomena and 3) determine the preferential interaction parameters and the Kirkwood-Buff integrals.. Methods: A major theoretical research and partly experimental.. Results and Discussion: Some equations in literature gave different values of activity coefficient and activity of solution components. The preferential interaction by binding is positive with ethanol only and at its higher concentration in the presence of ideal solution of different concentration of calcium chloride. There was positive m-value with ethanol. It ...

Both these factors, genetic markers and cultural influences, serve as Unalterable Predisposing Factors (called the PF-factor) in the development of alcoholism. These predisposing factors are important elements in determining the potential of the person to become an alcoholic. In this way they may well be necessary elements in the development of alcoholism in an individual, and while it is possible that they may be sufficient factors in some cases, such as male-limited alcoholism, they are usually only contributing factors in the development of alcoholism. They are called Unalterable because they are given factors and are not easily altered by therapeutic interference or preventative counseling. It is possible that some people may become alcoholic simply because of their G-factors, C-factors or combined PFfactors, but the experiences of many alcoholics cannot be accounted for simply by reference to PF-factors. Other factors need to be investigated and accounted for in the overall attempt to ...

A study Experiences of childbirth by mothers at the tertiary hospital in Limpopo Province was conducted (Maputle & Nolte 2008), and experiences of the mothers during childbirth revealed the major concept woman-centred care. Woman-centred care emerged as a core concept because it was found to be the central idea or event, and all the other categories and attributes were contingent upon it. The concept was also relevant to childbirth care within the framework of the Batho Pele principles directed at a customer-focused approach. An extensive literature search of computerised databases and manual searches of online journals were also undertaken to ensure that characteristics associated with the concept of woman-centred care were included in the search terms. Literature-based analysis included specific disciplines, for example nursing, medicine, humanities and nursing management.. Aims of analysis. In the process of analysis the characteristics of the concept and surrogate terms were identified ...

Look at Stefan and me as example: After my PhD, I went on to do a postdoc. One, two, three. Now Im an assistant prof, but not on tenure-track. After his PhD, Stefan started working for a scientific publisher. Two years later his contract became permanent. Weve been married since 4 years, but never actually lived together because Ive been moving from the USA to Canada and now to Sweden. Even after all these years, I still have to take into account that finally Ill end up working in a bank, as a teacher, or in a patent office. The problem is not that I expect a particularly high-paid job or some title. The problem is that in academia there is no middle-range of jobs-you-can-live-from with contracts that are renewable as long as you dont mess up (or your employer goes bankrupt). For family matters, thats an incredibly hostile environment, and the often necessary hanging-on till 40 is, I believe, for the obvious reason why so many women leave. Best ...
RESULTS No significant differences were observed in initial pain scores, sleep scores, demographics, biochemistries, or physical findings between the two groups. After 3 mo a significant improvement in scores was noted in the treated but not the untreated patients. In addition, a significant difference was found in the change of scores between the treated and untreated patients: total pain (−18 ± 2 vs. 0 ± 2), deep pain (−7 ± 1 vs. 0 ± 1), superficial pain (−5 ± 1 vs. 0 ± 1), muscular pain (−6 ± 1 vs. 0 ± 1), and sleep (1.2 ± 0.2 vs. 0.2 ± 0.2), all P , 0.0001. In treated patients 21% became pain-free (total pain , 2), 66% had improvement (decrease in total pain , 5, but not total elimination of painful symptoms), and 13% were considered treatment failures (a decrease in total pain of , or = 5). This compares with 0 (P , 0.02), 10 (P , 0.0001), and 90% (P , 0.0001), respectively, in the untreated patients.. ...
Financialization in the world economy has led to massive accumulation as well as concentration of financial assets providing sources of rentier income which has been much higher than those obtainable from physical assets. The present volume attempts to analyse the pattern of financial dominance in the world economy with its links to the systemic crisis. The analysis rests on the theoretical perspectives underlying the Keynesian and the Minskian theoretical framework .
Over the past several years, a community of researchers has been using and refining a particular framework for research and curriculum development in undergraduate mathematics education. The purpose of this paper is to share the results of this work with the mathematics education community at large by describing the current version of the framework and giving some examples of its application.,br,Our framework utilizes qualitative methods for research and is based on a very specific theoretical perspective that is being developed through attempts to understand the ideas of Piaget concerning reflective abstraction and reconstruct them in the context of college level mathematics. Our approach has three components. It begins with an initial theoretical analysis of what it means to understand a concept and how that understanding can be constructed by the learner. This leads to the design of an instructional treatment that focuses directly on trying to get students to make the constructions called for ...
The aim of this work package will be to synthesis the evidence from the other work packages to develop conceptual and decision-analytic models, taking into account costs and benefits, of health care provision and usage in slums. The work package also aims to provide tools for future evaluation of service delivery and health care policy-making.. The first stage of the work package is to identify what health services are available to slum residents (i.e. health care system structure) and to consider what would constitute sub-optimal care in these settings. Determining optimality in this context will need to take into account pragmatic factors such as affordability, economic factors such as technical efficiency, and normative considerations, such as equity of access. This theoretical perspective will underlie the analyses of how health system structure relates to its function.. ...
Description. How can the individual be at once cause and consequence of society, a unique agent of social action and also a social product? Why are some people accepted and celebrated for their particular features while other people and behaviors are considered deviant and stigmatized? This course examines theoretical perspectives on human identity, focusing on processes of creating categories of acceptable and deviant identities. We will discuss how identities are formed, how they vary, the forms and possibilities of unique or aggregate identities, how behaviors are labeled deviant, how people enter deviant roles and worlds, responses to differences and strategies of coping with these responses on the individual and group level. Rather than focus on the differences among various forms of deviant How can the individual be at once cause and consequence of society, a unique agent of social action and also a social product? No surprise…Health care costs continue to rise beyond the cost of living levels in the United States. Inflation is a fact of life - one that I have always struggled with from a theoretical perspective, but a basis for our reality - especially when it comes to reviewing the cost trends in health care. One demographic hit the hardest by these increasing costs is our elderly population, most significantly those on fixed incomes (i.e., folks collecting and living off of social security). Lets review where we are with regard to this trend.

Abstract: While Indias emergence as a rising economic power is an outcome of dynamic advantages based on technological learning and skills, innovation driven competitiveness has been much less prominent. It is expected that public funded institutions like universities and institutions should deliver on innovative research and ideas that can be commercialised. In this paper, we intend to understand university-industry interactions in India from a game theoretic perspective to capture issues of quality, objectives and incentives. Industrys low appetite for university inventions in India needs careful assessment, even as industry is increasingly engaging with the academia for problem solving inputs. The probability of market success of a university technology is prima facie low because these technologies are allegedly short of significant technological value addition. Often such a deficit in novelty is linked to lesser degree of complexity of research undertaken at Indian universities in the ...

This account of the Matthew effect is another small exercise in the psychosociological analysis of the workings of science as a social institution. The initial problem is transformed by a shift in theoretical perspective. As originally identified, the Matthew effect was construed in terms of enhancement of the position of already eminent scientists who are given disproportionate credit in cases of collaboration or of independent multiple discoveries. Its significance was thus confined to its implications for the reward system of science. By shifting the angle of vision, we note other possible kinds of consequences, this time for the communication system of science. The Matthew effect may serve to heighten the visibility of contributions to science by scientists of acknowledged standing and to reduce the visibility of contributions by authors who are less well known. We examine the psychosocial conditions and mechanisms underlying this effect and find a correlation between the redundancy function ...
Prerequisite: SOCI 1210. This course explores the features of social life that depend on the human ability to imagine ourselves as others see us. Drawing specifically from the theoretical perspectives of George Herbert Mead and Erving Goffman, this course investigates symbolic interactionist approaches to the (re)construction of the self and the self-society relationship as a process of symbolic communications between social actors. Central to this course is the notion that as social actors we attempt to shape the impressions that others have of us by projecting images of ourselves that best serve our own objectives. In so doing, we both define the social situation and create appropriate expectations of ourselves and others. ...
Sociology as a discipline is concerned with relationships. The relationship addressed in this book, is the one between society and nature. More specifically, the process of making pollution and the environmental condition relevant for - and in - parliament is used as an analytical prism to gain better understanding of that relationship. Building on theoretical perspectives from pragmatic moral-political sociology developed by Boltanski and Thévenot, the changing valuation of «nature» and «the environment» in Norwegian parliamentary debates is analysed: When and how is nature made a relevant for parliament? How is nature valued in these debates? How are decisions on environmental- and petroleum policy legitimated? What kind of knowledge is made relevant? In what ways have parliamentary debates changed over time and how can we understand these changes? Empirical data is an extensive sample of Norwegian parliamentary debates in the period 1945-2013. The book maps the historical trajectory of ...

Our results are the first documentation of defense-like behaviors evoked by activation of DLSC in the non-human primate. Activation of DLSC by the focal blockade of GABAergic inhibition evoked cowering, escape-like responses, high-pitch vocalizations, and attack of objects. These findings were unexpected in the context of the theoretical perspective presented by Dean et al. (1989) that emphasized a preferential role of primate DLSC for approach responses rather than defensive responses. Our findings indicate that the function of DLSC as a substrate for responding to threats is conserved across species.. Activation of DLSC produced defense-like responses that were both passive (i.e., cowering) and active (i.e., escape-like behavior, attack of objects), as well as an increase in defensive vocalization. For a given animal, the behavioral responses evoked from different sites within DLSC were consistent across infusions, suggesting that the various defense-like behaviors do not have independent site ...

A numerical gradient stream process was devised to characterize minimal energy designs of fusion pores connecting two parallel planar bilayer membranes. not supplied. Our process consequently yielded energy minima significantly lower than those reported in prior studies. The membrane of minimal energy pores bowed outward near the pore lumen, yielding a pore size that exceeded the distance between the two fusing membranes. I. Intro Membrane fusion entails the formation and then development of a fusion pore that links two formerly independent membranes. The fusion pore is definitely a circular, hourglass formed membrane bilayer whose inner rim forms a channel between the respective interior membrane compartments. From a theoretical perspective, the energies required for pore formation and pore enlargement depend on the precise shape of the fusion pore, and consequently the pore shape that minimizes energy must be sought. An assumed pore shape will generally not become one of minimal energy, and ...

When opposite sides of a quadrangle were of different length, half their sum was used as a basis to calculate the area. 14 These procedures do not presuppose a concept of angle as an object of mensuration15 and, as long as the shapes of the figures involved are sufficiently regular (nearly rectangular quadrangles and nearly right-angled triangles), the method produces reasonably accurate results. The oldest clay tablets documenting the calculation of measured areas date back to around 3,000 BCE. Keywords: complete lattices, reasoning, temporal logic, gene expression As the mathematical methodology of formal concept analysis (FCA) is littleknown within systems biology, we give a short overview of its history and pur-poses. During the early years 1980, FCA emerged within the community of setand order theorists, algebraists and discrete mathematicians. Its first aim was tofind a new, concrete and meaningful approach to the understanding of completelattices (ordered sets such that for every subset the supremum and the infimumexist). The following discovery showed to be very fruitful: Every complete lat-tice is representable as a hierarchy of concepts, which were conceived as sets ofobjects sharing a maximal set of attributes. This paved the way for using thedeveloped field of lattice theory for a transparent and complete representation ofvery different types of knowledge. FCA was inspired by the pedagogue Hartmut von Hentig [7] and his program of restructuring sciences, with a view to ...

Identifying reliable domain-domain interactions will increase our ability to predict novel protein-protein interactions, to unravel interactions in protein complexes, and thus gain more information about the function and behavior of genes. One of the challenges of identifying reliable domain-domain interactions is domain promiscuity. Promiscuous domains are domains that can occur in many domain architectures and are therefore found in many proteins. This becomes a problem for a method where the score of a domain-pair is the ratio between observed and expected frequencies because the protein-protein interaction network is sparse. As such, many protein-pairs will be non-interacting and domain-pairs with promiscuous domains will be penalized. This domain promiscuity challenge to the problem of inferring reliable domain-domain interactions from protein-protein interactions has been recognized, and a number of work-arounds have been proposed. This paper reports on an application of Formal Concept Analysis to
1. Noncompetitive elections-those where the ultimate winner is not in doubt-matter. In one of my papers, I argue the main reasons they matter is because of the information they generate. Even if United Russia was never in danger of losing control of the Duma, the results last week seem to have drastically changed beliefs about the strength of Putin/United Russia and how long the regime will last. These elections are not window dressing or a facade to confer legitimacy-by what definition of legitimacy could anyone possibly be convinced by these elections that Putins rule is legitimate?-but are meaningful political events because they generate public information about the strength and popularity of the incumbent and opposition groups.. Most of the analysis of this election has not been about the implications of United Russia no longer having a supermajority in the Duma, but about the information generated by the lower-than expected result. I think this is the proper thing to focus on in Russian ...

Inferential models are widely used in the chemical industry to infer key process variables, which are challenging or expensive to measure, from other more easily measured variables. The aim of this paper is three-fold: to present a theoretical review of some of the well known linear inferential modeling techniques, to enhance the predictive ability of the regularized canonical correlation analysis (RCCA) method, and finally to compare the performances of these techniques and highlight some of the practical issues that can affect their predictive abilities. The inferential modeling techniques considered in this study include full rank modeling techniques, such as ordinary least square (OLS) regression and ridge regression (RR), and latent variable regression (LVR) techniques, such as principal component regression (PCR), partial least squares (PLS) regression, and regularized canonical correlation analysis (RCCA). The theoretical analysis shows that the loading vectors used in LVR modeling can be

On December 8, 1953, in the midst of increasing nuclear weapons testing and geopolitical polarization, United States President Dwight D. Eisenhower launched the Atoms for Peace initiative. More than a pacifist program, the initiative is nowadays seen as an essential piece in the U.S. defense strategy and foreign policy at the beginning of the Cold War. As such, it pursued several ambitious goals, and Latin America was an ideal target for most of them: to create political allies, to ease fears of the deadly atomic energy while fostering receptive attitudes towards nuclear technologies, to control and avoid development of nuclear weapons outside the United States and its allies, and to open or redirect markets for the new nuclear industry. The U.S. Department of State, through the Foreign Operations Administration, acted in concert with several domestic and foreign middle-range actors, including people at national nuclear commissions, universities, and industrial funds, to implement programs of ...

The purpose of this review is to characterize major advancements in the past 40 years of research on youth sport motivation. The author focuses on this period, during which the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports, affiliated researchers, and other scholars contributed to the current state of the field. First, she traces paradigm shifts that represent changes in the philosophy and practice of science in youth sport motivation research. Second, she discusses emergent theoretical perspectives that guided empirical research and produced robust findings on predictors, mediators, and outcomes of motivation. Third, she translates these theories and associated studies to inform evidence-based best practices for youth sport programs. Finally, the author recommends that future research highlight developmental approaches, examine sport as a means of promoting physical activity, and consider multidisciplinary perspectives on conducive topics. By reflecting on paradigm shifts and research trends over ...
The term institutionalisation is widely used in social theory to denote the process of making something (for example a concept, a social role, particular values and norms, or modes of behaviour) become embedded within an organization, social system, or society as an established custom or norm within that system. See the entries on structure and agency and social construction for theoretical perspectives on the process of institutionalisation and the associated construction of institutions.. The term institutionalisation may also be used to refer to the committing by a society of an individual to a particular institution such as a mental institution. The term institutionalisation is therefore sometimes used as a term to describe both the treatment of, and damage caused to, vulnerable human beings by the oppressive or corrupt application of inflexible systems of social, medical, or legal controls by publicly owned, private or not-for-profit organisations or to describe the process of becoming ...
Infants with unilateral brain lesions are at high risk of developing unilateral cerebral palsy (CP). Given the great plasticity of the young brain, possible interventions for infants at risk of unilateral CP deserve exploration. Constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) is known to be effective for older children with unilateral CP but is not systematically used for infants. The development of CIMT for infants (baby-CIMT) is described here, as is the methodology of an RCT comparing the effects on manual ability development of baby-CIMT versus baby-massage. The main hypothesis is that infants receiving baby-CIMT will develop manual ability in the involved hand faster than will infants receiving baby-massage in the first year of life. The study will be a randomised, controlled, prospective parallel-group trial. Invited infants will be to be randomised to either the baby-CIMT or the baby-massage group if they: 1) are at risk of developing unilateral CP due to a known neonatal event affecting the brain or
Deadric Williams research is organized around two general themes: (1) racism and families and (2) stress, couples relationships, and health. His research on racism and families uses Critical Race Theory as a theoretical perspective to challenge conventional sociological research on racial economic inequality among families. His second line of research examines stress and health as a longitudinal and dyadic process among couples. Deadrics research has been published in outlets such as Issues in Race & Society, Journal of African American Studies, Personal Relationships, Society & Mental Health, American Journal of Human Biology, Population Research and Policy Review among others.. ...
This article aims to convey the promise and potential of visual methods in organizational research. It begins by reviewing the status of visual research in the social sciences in order to explore its potential contribution to organizational research, distinguishing four categories of visual data used by organizational analysts. Using examples from our own ongoing research, we argue that the collection and analysis of visual images has the potential to enhance organizational research by encouraging a focus on aspects of organizational culture that are less easily captured through the collection and analysis of written or spoken words alone. We review the challenges posed by use of visual methods, including issues of access, ethics and copyright law and the importance of theoretical perspective in informing data analysis. Finally, we argue that visual methods have the potential to enable development of a more reflexive approach to organizational research, using examples from our own research to ...
Improving the lives of youth is critical to local, national, and international development. The needs of youth are complex and therefore broader than any one sector of development. Multisector programs that focus on the whole person are promising for having a greater impact on youth than single-sector approaches. More specifically, theoretical perspectives and evidence from research suggest that two sectors important for encouraging the well-being of youth - workforce development (WfD) and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) - are interrelated and mutually supportive. They may therefore lead to better outcomes for youth when integrated within a single youth-focused program. The present study makes recommendations to inform implementation of and research on youth programs that integrate WfD and SRH. We based these recommendations on a systematic, comprehensive review of integrated programs with input from a consultative group of implementers, funders, and researchers. ...

Recently, a series of studies have demonstrated that it is possible to shift interpretation and attention biases through brief computerized interventions, termed cognitive bias modification (CBM). I am thrilled to be a part of this exciting new research field, and hope to further this line of work by testing CBM paradigms with new populations, and by evaluating the clinical utility of CBM through comparing it to more traditional forms of therapy (e.g., exposure). From a theoretical perspective, this research tests the predicted causal relationship between cognitive bias change and fear reduction. Moreover, this research has high potential clinical value because, given the centrality of changing cognitive processing in current anxiety treatments. Additionally, CBM may be more palatable than traditional exposure-based procedures. Finally, CBM paradigms can be rapidly disseminated via the computer and are inexpensive given that they do not require direct therapist contact ...
Yet despite decades of specialized research, a coherent and analytical history of the angelical conjunction itself remains elusive. This conference therefore aims to explore the connection between medicine and religion across the time-span of the late medieval and early modern eras, and from an intercultural perspective.. Taking as our focus the Mediterranean, the Islamic World and Europe, and the various Christianities, Islams, and Judaisms that flourished there, we aim to develop methodological and theoretical perspectives on the angelical conjunction(s) of these two spheres. How did the entanglement of religion and medicine shape epistemologies in both of these spheres? What are the conceptions of the body and its relationship to the soul that these entanglements assumed or envisioned? What were the limits to coexistence? How did the conjunction change over time ...

I use theoretical and computational methods to explore the behavior of water and anesthetics in biological systems. My research focuses on several areas, including: how the structural and dynamical properties of water change as water approaches a biological system such as a cell membrane; how water mediates anesthetic action and biological processes; how anesthetics such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas) interact with water and hydrated biomolecules. By understanding both microscopic and thermodynamical properties of special biological water from a theoretical perspective, my work helps interpret experimental results and unravel the physical mechanisms that give rise to complex biophysical phenomena.. One of the measures that can help developing countries in meeting Target 10 of the Millennium Development Goals - halving the number of people without access to water and adequate sanitation by 2015 - is through a water sector reform. In this research the Malaysian water sector reform is assessed by answering the following questions: • How can we understand and explain the policy process of the reform? • To what extent have the outputs of the reform contributed to the realization of the reforms objectives? and • To what extent has the water sector reform improved the operational efficiency and environmental effectiveness of water utilities? This research was approached from two theoretical perspectives: the policy arrangement approach and the policy evaluation approach. The policy arrangement approach provides the analytical tools to ascertain answers to the first question. This is done by thoroughly investigating the main discourses underpinning the water sector reform, the ...
Introduction My research continues to explore the nature of composer/performer collaborations for different styles of music and different media: from string quartet to acoustic music with live electronics, to musicians working in a recording studio. Cross-cultural collaborations bring another dimension to the relationship between notation and sound from practice-based, empirical and theoretical perspectives. In addition…
The pervasive message in Principles of Trauma Therapy is that a persons symptoms due to a trauma can resolve via therapeutic engagement within a safe, therapeutic environment. The treatment approach is eclectic, and it weaves together strategies from various models (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic approaches, and mindfulness). People in therapy are given the opportunity to develop a coherent narrative of their past experiences, while learning stress reduction skills and psychoeducation through validation, respect, and supportive encouragement.. At the heart, Principles of Trauma Therapy comes from the theoretical perspective of exposure therapy and much of the content centers around this orientation for treatment. The clinician invites the person in therapy to develop alternative perceptions to their negative beliefs about themselves (oral and written) and the environment where the trauma manifested, while reducing conditioned emotional responses (CER).. To simplify, the ...
Many tasks in machine learning, statistics, scientific computing, and optimization ultimately boil down to numerical linear algebra. Randomized numerical linear algebra (RandNLA) exploits randomness to improve matrix algorithms for fundamental problems like matrix multiplication and least-squares using techniques such as random sampling and random projection. RandNLA has received a great deal of interdisciplinary interest in recent years, with contributions coming from numerical linear algebra, theoretical computer science, scientific computing, statistics, optimization, data analysis, and machine learning, as well as application areas such as genetics, physics, astronomy, and internet modeling. RandNLA is of great interest from a theoretical perspective, but it has the potential to be a transformative new tool for machine learning, statistics, and data analysis. The workshop aims to:. (1) Present connections between RandNLA and TCS. The workshop will highlight worst-case theoretical aspects of ...
Im happy to say that Light Lifting proved to be the pleasure I was hoping for. Each of its seven stories are quite different in content and style, though each ushers a character to some extreme situation (more often than not one that might not look extreme to the rest of us; maybe just some quiet moment) and each bears the marks of the author with spatters of details in sentence fragments that somehow do not interrupt the flow of the narrative.. Most of these stories take place in or around Windsor in Ontario, Canada, just across the river from Detroit. Refreshingly, these stories all focus on what Id call the working class, though some of them focus on children of the working class. I agree with fellow Shadow Giller Jury member Alison Gzowski: this is a refreshing debut short story collection. It seems that so many short story writers today write deeply intellectual-seeming stories from some theoretical perspective gleaned in grad school and cultivated in an MA program. There are some great ...
This paper reviews some of the basic patterns of international capital flows to emerging markets in recent years, including the composition of capital flows, intraregional flow patterns, and the geographical distribution of the flows. A theoretical model that sheds new light on these observed patterns is developed. This model focuses on the cost of financing aspect of capital flows, and shows that the patterns of capital flows are influenced by the combined effects of financial market development and growth potential in the recipient countries. The theoretical predictions of the model are shown to be consistent with the stylized facts.
I chose to come here primarily for the School for Advanced Studies in the Arts and Humanities. Coming out of high school, I had so many interests and didnt want to limit myself. Looking at other programs that were so streamlined didnt seem like the best choice to honor all of my interests and abilities, and the professors working in SASAH reached out to me and demonstrated how interdisciplinary work could connect my different theoretical perspectives in productive and imaginative ways.. I learned so much more about the world and myself than I ever expected to when I came to Western.. ...

Circadian clocks have become popular systems for studying the relationship between gene-protein dynamics and phenotype. The molecular machinery underlying these networks has been relatively well characterized, and this has led to great interest in developing predictive computational models of the clock. Such models are usually formulated as sets of DEs. The high level of biochemical detail afforded by this approach has allowed DE models to successfully address a range of issues regarding the functional relationship between the architecture of the clock and circadian homeostasis. One homeostatic mechanism that has been comprehensively investigated from a theoretical perspective is temperature compensation. By assuming that certain subsets of a circuits kinetic parameters are temperature-dependent, temperature has been incorporated into a number of circadian DE models, ranging from minimal circuits built on the Goodwin oscillator [15,23,58] to more detailed formulations that explicitly model the ...

Dont mind me sitting on the lid of the loo in the photo will you, I figured it was the safest spot to nurse her, alongside her bed for the night. I was really pleased to watch her devour one cricket, 3 worms and some kale, she didnt fancy the slug. She seemed much perkier and interested in everything, so I decided to put her back with her sisters. She had a special treat enroute to the chook yard, I stopped at the worm farm, took the lid off, turned over a scoop of scraps so there was a seething mass of worms visible, then sat her in the worm farm where she gobbled up at least 20 worms, hooray! She was reintroduced to the chook yard with no problems and although subdued, she was pecking around a bit and eating small amounts. If she deteriorates later on then that will cement the pain theory in my head I think. I dont want to give her too much aspirin, (god forbid a chicken with a stomach ulcer!) but if she looks really crook late in the day then I think Ill bring her inside to sleep in the ...
Prior to expiry, around 60% of the options set for expiry were said to be out of the money, which means that 60% of these options have a strike price higher than the market price of Bitcoin. This reduces the chances of major volatility of the underlying asset, as it doesnt make sense for these options to be exercised at higher than market prices. While if these options would mostly be in the money, it would entail that their strike price would be lower than the market price, making it lucrative for the investors, thus increasing volatility.. Another indicator of expected volatility implications of a major expiry event in the derivatives market would be the concept of the maximum pain theory, which is a calculation methodology that shows the price level at which option buyers would suffer the greatest amount of financial losses. Its an excellent metric to gauge price implications, as it reflects all the open interest for a particular expiry date and does not reflect any specific investors ...
In many respects the 20th century can be regarded as a breakthrough in terms of the evolution of architectural conservation. It is during that period that the theory of architectural conservation had been formulated for the first time, the theory which nowadays is already considered as classical or traditional. In the second half of the 20th century there appeared a new tendency in architectural conservation which did not require theoretical reflection. This tendency is referred to as scientific conservation and its key factors are exact sciences (mathematics and natural science). The dissemination of science applied in conservation practice has to a great extent weakened, if not put a stop to, the theoretical architectural conservation debate. The Venice Charter of 1964 brought about a doctrinal period in terms of architectural conservation in its broadest sense, characterised by the mass production of various doctrinal documents. Starting from the 80s new ideological trends also began ...
Mariusz Zaruski develops his understanding of the Tatra mountains in many articles. From the moment he comes into contact with them, he was accompanied by theoretical reflection and the desire to create an ideology to justify the need for direct human contact with the mountains. In particular, he emphasized the pantheistic and anthropomorphic character, which was firmly rooted in his biography and views on his own system. Metaphysical-religious transforming the space of the Tatra mountains allowed Zaruski to treat them as an excellent temple, and the man as a free person entering interactions with world of mountains. The man is getting to know sacrum, because for him it is manifesting through hierophantic, and the Tatra mountains are medium of this demonstration. The Tatra mountains as the temple of the nature through their majesty, danger, power, secret are giving sense to the holiness, but also are fulfilling the man pointing him towards the own interior, letting him feel primitive power and ...
Background: 425 000 people are today living with a substance-related addictive disorder in Sweden. A large percentage of these people also live with concurrent somatic diseases which means that this group of people often encounter the somatic health-care system.. Aim: The study aimed to highlight the experience of nursing in somatic care in patients with a substance-related addictive disorder.. Design: The study was conducted as a literature review with a systematic approach.. Method: The literature search was conducted through three databases: CINAHL, PsycINFO and PubMed, which resulted in eleven articles, all with a qualitative approach. The articles were checked for accuracy and the material was analyzed with inspiration from Graneheim and Lundmans (2004) concept analysis.. Findings: Three themes were identified: disrespectful treatment, care on different terms and good nursing relationship. Main findings revealed that the patients experienced nursing staff as suspicious, blaming and showing ...
BackgroundRecent findings suggest that in pancreatic acinar cells stimulated with bile acid, a pro-apoptotic effect of reactive oxygen species (ROS) dominates their effect on necrosis and spreading of inflammation. The first effect presumably occurs via cytochrome C release from the inner mitochondrial membrane. A pro-necrotic effect ¿ similar to the one of Ca2+ ¿ can be strong opening of mitochondrial pores leading to breakdown of the membrane potential, ATP depletion, sustained Ca2+ increase and premature activation of digestive enzymes. To explain published data and to understand ROS effects during the onset of acute pancreatitis, a model using multi-valued logic is constructed. Formal concept analysis (FCA) is used to validate the model against data as well as to analyze and visualize rules that capture the dynamics.ResultsSimulations for two different levels of bile stimulation and for inhibition or addition of antioxidants reproduce the qualitative behaviour shown in the experiments. ...
