FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE. New York, NY - December 8, 2012 - Two recent NLN documents address the NLNs commitment to advancing the science of nursing education and nursing education research while maintaining a focus on patient-centered care and safe nursing practice. For three decades, the League has devoted programming and resources to build a strong community of nurse educator scholars that complements the development and refinement of programs that prepare clinical nurse researchers, said NLN president Judith Halstead, PhD, RN, FAAN, ANEF. We are proud of that legacy. The new NLN Vision: Transforming Research in Nursing Education and Priorities for Research in Nursing Education build on our mission to promote excellence in nursing education to build a strong and diverse workforce to advance the nations health. As stated in the NLN Vision: The new times for nursing and health care engendered by health care reform require partnerships, collaboration, and systems integration. The NLNs ...
Background : Global research productivity depends on the presence of contextual factors, such as a doctorally prepared faculty, graduate programmes, publication options, that enable the conduct and publication of studies to generate knowledge to inform nursing practice. Objectives : The current study aimed to develop and test an instrument that measures the level of contextual support for nursing research within a specific country, allowing comparisons between countries. Method : After development of a 20-item survey with seven factors and 11 criteria based on a literature review, a quantitative descriptive e-mail survey design was used. Results : Nurse researchers (N = 100) from 22 countries were invited to participate. The response rate was 39% from 15 countries. Ethics approval was obtained by investigators in their country of origin. Results showed wide variation in the level of contextual support. The average total level of support across all countries was 26.8% (standard deviation [SD] = 14.97).
A cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) filled with tiny infants connected to collections of tubes and buzzing monitors can be an intimidating and overwhelming place for a mother who is worried about her newborn with congenital heart disease (CHD). A Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia team of nurse researchers conducted a qualitative study in which mothers of babies who have a complex heart condition described the post-diagnostic period, surgery, and the CICU stay as extremely stressful. The researchers also examined mothers coping mechanisms, and they identified mindfulness as a potential helpful early intervention tool to reduce mothers stress. ...

Assistant Professor, Haley Nurse Scientist, and National Institute of Nursing Research grant recipient Lichuan Ye explores new ways to help patients get a good nights sleep.
Faculty members from UH Mānoa Nursing have been awarded a $39,000 federal grant from the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities through the Research Centers in Minority Institutions Translational Research Network (RTRN) to conduct a study titled Placental Oral Microbiota Associated with Preterm Labor in Hawaii.. The study will examine placental tissue samples from women in Hawaii who experienced preterm labor for the presence and type of oral bacteria.. Oral bacteria that cause dental decay (cavities) can be transmitted through the bloodstream from the mouth to other parts of the body, including the placenta, and can contribute to the development of serious systemic diseases. About 40% of pregnant women experience dental decay, which is associated with pregnancy complications such as preterm labor, preterm birth and low birth weight infants.. The first step of our project will be working in the lab, analyzing samples of placentas to determine the presence of any oral ...
Evidence-based nursing integrates the best evidence from research with clinical expertise, patient preferences, and existing resources into decision making about the health care of individual patients.1 To practise evidence-based nursing, clinical nurses need effective strategies for extracting relevant information from the many publications that are currently available. The quality of information that nurses demand and how effectively they evaluate and use it for clinical decision making will influence patient outcomes and, ultimately, the part nurses play in the delivery of health care.. The term information society was introduced in the 1980s to describe the information explosion precipitated by new technologies.2 Nursing practice is information intensive. Even 10 years ago, Mowry and Korpman estimated that nurses spent 40% of their time on information related tasks.3 The rapid growth of nursing information means that nurses cannot rely on knowledge acquired as students and must constantly ...

No profession is more integral and essential within every level of global health care than nursing. Because of their close relationship with patients, nurses are ideally positioned to design and drive scientific discoveries that can be implemented directly into clinical practice. Since 1986, the NIHs National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) has been supporting critical investigations to advance disease prevention, patient self-management, end-of-life care and treatment innovations, as well as funding training for nurse scientists.. The results of nursing research help build the knowledge base and provide the evidence to guide interventions by nurses and other health care workers. From studying approaches to prevent HIV/AIDS in Jamaican girls, to assessing water filters that could reduce cholera outbreaks in Bangladesh, or identifying how to lessen depression caused by HIV/AIDS, NINR-funded nurse investigators are producing scientific evidence that improves health around the globe.. These ...
The first aim of this review was to identify the frequency with which receipt, as defined in the BCC framework, is addressed in health intervention research. Only 19.6% of the studies identified from the forward citation search to report on fidelity were found to address receipt, compared with 33% in a recent review on clinical supervision [85]. Amongst the studies identified, 60.6% assessed receipt in relation to understanding (compared to 0-69% in other reviews [10, 14-17]) and 42.4% in relation to performance of skill (39-65% in other reviews [10, 14-17]). Strategies to enhance understanding were present in only 12.1% (0-79% in other reviews [10, 14-17]) and performance of skill in 21.1% of studies (50-69% in other reviews [10, 14-17]). These results suggest that there has been little improvement over time with regards to the frequency with which receipt is addressed in health intervention research and that there is a need to continue to advocate for better quality evaluations that focus and ...

I had basic computer skills but yet I consulted certain friends who could assist me in refining my computer skills. It was only after a while that I realized that I needed to have a plan and schedule to achieve results in a time-bound manner. Hence I prepared a detailed plan and time table. It was a step by step guide that I gave myself to go about my research work. I also trained myself to become a persistent investigator rather than being frustrated by initial failures and giving up easily. In dealing with problems, I developed myself a method. First I would think about the problem and with the assistance of relevant information, arrive at a solution that seemed to me most effective and appropriate. I did not end my problem-solving exercise at this point. Instead, I then thought about what other possible solutions could be. I also thought about the negative aspects and possible errors in the solution of my choice. Only after this process is completed did I finalize my solution option. I was ...

This study used a common research design to study variables that have been relatively ignored in new graduate nurses. Although a commonly used design to explore research utilisation of various participant groups,4 it does not account for the complex intricacies and associations that are commonly linked with research use. A clearer account of contextual factors being studied would have added clarity. The RUQ has been reliable in other studies and measures indirect and direct research use; however, it does not explain instrumental, conceptual, persuasive and overall research use described by Estabrooks5 and commonly discussed in other studies.6 The use of multivariate statistical methods with this sample added to the frequently used bivariate correlational analysis found in the literature. Inclusion of p values would strengthen claims of significance in this study. Although multicollinearity was tested in this study, a discussion of specific values would aid in evaluating the results. Despite the ...

Background: Mothers with HIV often face personal and environmental risks for poor maternal health behaviors and infant neglect, even when HIV transmission to the infant was prevented. Maternal-fetal attachment (MFA), the pre-birth relationship of a woman with her fetus, may be the precursor to maternal caregiving. Using the strengths perspective in social work, which embeds MFA within a socio-ecological conceptual framework, it is hypothesized that high levels of maternal-fetal attachment may protect mothers and infants against poor maternal health behaviors. Objective: To assess whether MFA together with history of substance use, living marital status, planned pregnancy status, and timing of HIV diagnosis predict three desirable maternal health behaviors (pregnancy care, adherence to prenatal antiretroviral therapy-ART, and infants screening clinic care) among pregnant women with HIV/AIDS. Method: Prospective observation and hypothesis-testing multivariate analyses. Over 17 consecutive months, all

Not everything kept in stock for nursing floors is a routine item. Bulk items, such as alcohol preparations, iodine swabs, and gloves, are routine items because nurses use them with every patient. For this reason, and because these items generally are not noted on patient charts, facilities may not separately bill for them.
In the largest, most comprehensive genetic analysis of childhood-onset inflammatory bowel disease, an international research team has identified five new gene regions, including one involved in a biological pathway that helps drive the painful inflammation of the digestive tract that characterizes the disease. Although much research remains to be done, the study may provide a basis for developing drugs that target a protein on the pathway, for patients with the implicated gene variant.
