The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says children and adults should stay home 24 hours after fevers subside. But most workers are not able to stay home when theyre obviously ill, let alone when they may still be contagious despite feeling physically better. In doing so, they put their coworkers, their customers and the general public at risk. Unfortunately, that does not outweigh the risks of losing a paycheck or even a job.. In a 2013 survey commissioned by Oxfam America, 1 out of 7 low-wage workers and 1 out of 5 low-wage mothers reported losing a job because they were sick or needed to care for a family member. Too many workers lose pay and risk workplace discipline and even termination when they take time off, so they often choose to go to work sick. Adults without earned paid sick days are 1.5 times more likely than adults with paid sick days to report going to work with a contagious illness like the flu or a viral infection. Moreover, these adults are also more likely to delay ...

Value sensitive design (VSD) is a theoretically grounded approach to the design of technology that accounts for human values in a principled and comprehensive manner. VSD addresses design issues within the fields of information systems design and human-computer interaction by emphasizing the ethical values of direct and indirect stakeholders. It was developed by Batya Friedman and Peter Kahn at the University of Washington starting in the late 1980s and early 1990s. This approach takes human values into account in a well defined matter throughout the whole process. Designs are developed using a tripartite investigation consisting of three phases: conceptual, empirical and technological. These investigations are intended to be iterative, allowing the designer to modify the design continuously. Privacy by Design is an example of VSD that is concerned with respecting the privacy of end users of (IT) systems. VSD uses an iterative design process that involves three types of investigations: ...

A couple of things. Where is this evidence of UK residents flocking to other countries to get medical care (except for elective cosmetic surgery, which are usually included in figures quoted). The UK runs a private system along side the NHS. If the NHS is so dreadful, then it would fade away because everyone would go private not the 15% that I have seen quoted. Why hasnt this happened and do British Politicians see eradication of the NHS as political suicide? Also why does comparision alway go back to the UK & Canada, why not mention virtually every other industrialised country, which also has some form of Nationalised health care? How are their services compared to the the US? --Nik77uk 16:49, 5 March 2009 (GMT) First let me say that I do not support public health care in the states. That being said, the news items subject is horribly incorrect as far as factual data is concerned. I have come to despise the media on all sides for actions represented in the linked article that twist facts ...

This study investigated self-efficacy in breastfeeding support among public health nurses (PHNs) working at maternal and child health (MCH) services in Japanese municipalities, and its related factors such as education, working experience, breastfeeding experience, and postgraduate/continuous education. Directors of the MCH divisions were requested to select one PHN to answer the self-report questionnaires sent. The questionnaires were collected from October 2010 to January 2011. Of the 1750 questionnaires sent, 831 were returned (response rate: 47.5%); 102 were excluded from analysis because of missing data (valid response rate: 41.7%). After adjusting the weights of PHN sampling and collection rates by prefecture and population size, Model 1 of the multiple regression analysis showed that the self-efficacy in breastfeeding support was significantly higher in large/urban municipalities (β = 0.13) and in the Kanto district. Model 2 revealed that self-efficacy was significantly associated with working

When she reacted at the public health office...she had a large hive on her arm and her arm swelled. I gave her benadryll right away and the public health nurse phoned the on call doctor, but was unable to reach anyone. So...I decided to take her to the hospital...and the public health nurse came with me. We were there a while...but I felt the doctors there really had no idea what to do. So...I decided to continue with benadryll for the next 2 days and reactine for a few days after that. The doctors really had no idea how long it would take the vaccine to be broken down by the body...so thats what I came up with. The public health nurse had talked to my allergist (looking back, I would talk myself) and he thought it was an acceptable plan. I really did not want the benadryll to wear off and have her experience a reaction again during the night ...

Beth, however, does seem to embody the community spirit of public health. She took not one but two pay cuts in order to serve her community in the way she feels a public health nurse should. When Beth finished nursing school, she "had to" take a high-paying job as a pulmonary nurse at Athens Regional because, though she really wanted to work in public health, health departments at the time didnt hire new grads. So she bided her time at ARHC until an entry-level job opened up in Jackson Co. She worked there a few years and even got promoted, but when an entry-level job opened up in Madison Co., she took it and another pay-cut. Beth believes that the community is best served by a public health nurse that lives in that community, so she applied for the demotion in order to work in the county where she lived. Sure, working close to home must have had personal advantages for Beth, but it seems to me that she wouldnt take another pay-cut just to shorten her commute by a few minutes. She had greater ...

Many of the cases they currently are treating were likely latent for a long time before patients began showing symptoms.. When active cases show up, patients go through at least six months of directly observed treatment. The average time is nine months.. Public health nurse Julie Winner said latent cases often become active when the patient is older, and immunity is lowered or have contracted another disease.. Drug resistance can be triggered by incomplete treatment, which is why public health nurses visit a patient every day on average for about nine months, to provide directly observed treatment (DOT).. "The goal is to make sure that somebody does get the right medication for the whole treatment to prevent the bacteria to become fully resistant," Lees said. "Thats part of the reason we do DOT, to make sure resistance (doesnt occur)." ...

October 15, 2009) The Health Department needs registered nurses--lots of them--to get H1N1 vaccine out quickly to the groups at high risk of developing complications from the highly contagious virus. "We have grant funds from the state health department to pay RNs to give H1N1 vaccinations," said Pat Fralick, Director of Family & Community Health for the Health Department of Northwest Michigan. "We have literally dozens of flu shot clinics to staff--in virtually every community in Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet, and Otsego counties. There is no way public health nurses can complete so many clinics in a short period of time without help.". Fralick said any registered nurses with licenses to practice in Michigan are welcome to submit an application for "Nurse Vaccinator", even if they are not currently employed. Because children six months and up are included in a vaccine priority group, RNs who have experience giving pediatric injections--or who are willing to learn--are especially needed.. "We have ...
