The pattern of neonatal bacterial infections in the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH nursery was analysed over a three month period with a view of finding out the causative organisms and their antibiotic sensitivity pattern. Any suspected infected infant was subjected to a batch of bacterialogical investigations which included blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, rectal and umblical swab cultures. Other body surface swabs were taken as necessary. Predisposing factors were looked for. - Klebsiella and Esriherichia Coli were the commonest organisms incriminated in the aetiology of neonatal infections in this study, accounting for 38% of all isolates. Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus albus accounted for 27%. Aminoglycosides gave the best sensitivities against all gram negative organisms tested, with gentamycin being superior to Kanamycin. Lincomycin, chloramphenicol and minocycline gave the best sensitivities against gram positive organisms ...
Evaluating young children recently exposed to airborne Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a public health priority. If infected, children aged ,2 years are at high risk for severe tuberculosis (TB) disease (e.g., TB meningitis) (1). In December 2003, infectious pulmonary TB disease was diagnosed in a foreign-born nurse working in the newborn nursery and maternity ward of a New York City hospital (hospital A); the nurse had declined treatment for latent TB infection (LTBI) after testing positive 11 years earlier. An investigation including medical evaluation of contacts in the nursery and maternity ward was conducted by the Bureau of TB Control (BTBC) at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, hospital A, and CDC. This report summarizes the results of that investigation, which determined that approximately 1,500 patients had been exposed to the nurse but the majority could not be located for evaluation. Among those who were tested, four infants had positive tuberculin skin test ...
The Newborn Nursery website was created in order to enhance your clinical experience. We hope that you will find it to be a useful addition to your rotation. The Photo Gallery section contains hundreds of photographs and video clips of normal and abnormal findings in newborns as well as audio tracks of common heart murmurs. The Clinical Guidelines section provides a framework for approaching some of the more commonly encountered problems. The Breastfeeding section contains photos, videos, and lots of practical tips. (The two breastfeeding videos that are most relevant to your rotation are A Perfect Latch and Hand Expressing Milk. We suggest you watch both early on as the topics covered will frequently be referenced on rounds). The Newborn Nursery Curriculum section details the information residents are expected to learn with links to useful references, so use it to measure your educational progress and identify areas you want to strengthen.. ...
A topic that frequently leads to both questions and claims from concerned parents during rounds in the newborn nursery is the vaccination against the hepatitis B virus (HBV), something that has been recommended universally for infants by the Advisory Council on Immunization Practices (ACIP) since 1991. Their strategy was, and still is, to wipe this awful disease out in the United States. Over the years, the recommendation for timing of the first dose has changed from at birth before hospital discharge or at age 1-2 months to simply newborns before hospital discharge in 2002, with qualifiers of medical stability and weight greater than 2,000 grams added in 2005. Babies that weight less than 2 kg at birth still will get the vaccine at discharge home or at 1 month of age if still in the hospital. This last change was recommended because of concerns over efficacy rather than safety. Its an extremely safe vaccine.. In addition to questions about the vaccine, the most common being about any ...
MODEL RELEASED. Model released. Young child affected by Ewings sarcoma of the leg playing in an hospital nursery with a video game. Ewings sarcoma is a rare malignant form of bone cancer which mostly arises in large bones such as the femur, tibia, humerus and the pelvic bones; it spreads to other parts of the body at an early stage. The condition is most common in children between 10 and 15 years of age. The affected bone is painful, tender and may also become weakened and fracture easily. Treatment is with radiotherapy and chemotherapy with anticancer drugs. - Stock Image M131/0231
How it was designed ... By placing a specially designed 8mm microphone inside a pregnant mothers uterus, directly next to the unborn infants ear. Insertion of the microphone moments before the mother went into labor enabled Dr. Eller to record the major intrauterine sounds that the baby had been hearing for the last four to five months prior to birth. The recorded sounds were then clinically tested on thousands of babies in hospital nurseries, and proved to be a natural audio baby pacifier. Based on the knowledge that the birth experience and transition from the peaceful, quiet existence inside the mothers body is a very traumatic time for the newborn, it has been proved that the recorded intrauterine sounds produce a calming effect on the newborn infant after birth. ...
Because infants with this disorder generally die soon after birth, the doctors and nurses expected this infant to die shortly. They abandoned the baby in the back of the hospital nursery and left the infant to starve. To their surprise, the baby lived for thirteen days. What makes this story even more disturbing was that an operational procedure was needlessly practiced on the dying infant. Under the orders of his senior resident, Dr. Neuman performed a finger amputation procedure on the infant without anesthesia. When he recounted this experience later, he recalled his horror upon realizing that the child could actually feel pain. He recalls that, when [he started amputating the finger], it screamed…[his] hands began to shake. The kid was in pain. It could feel pain. He regrets his actions, saying, I shouldve realized that, but somehow I did not. It was because the baby did not really look like a baby.. When the baby passed away, Dr. Neuman recalled experiencing a combination of sadness ...
I started researching vaccines when I was pregnant. My mother in law told me that she had heard that autism might be linked to them since they are giving so many now. When I found out that they were trying to convince me that the chicken pox was a deadly disease that we had to vaccinate against, red flags went up... youre SUPPOSED to get chicken pox as a kid! I was also astounded that we needed to give a hepatitis B shot at birth. I dont claim to be a professional in the medical field, but I am certainly no dummy. I know a thing or two about a few diseases, and I know that hepatitis B is a blood infection that is transmitted by IV-sharing individuals, prostitutes and homosexuals. NOT newborns in sterile hospital nurseries. I thought the medical community had lost their minds when they said they NEEDED to vaccinate at birth for hepatitis B. That seemed OUTRAGEOUS to me! So my slight distrust for the medical community began. And it only escalated. (I should probably point out too, that my mom ...

In 1996, the nursery filled with lots of babies, where families could visit and compare still existed. Since I was breastfeeding, my baby was brought to me fairly frequently after delivery, and then he returned to the newborn nursery with nurses in attendance. As I recovered, he spent more time with me in the room, and less in the newborn nursery. I remember being a few doors from the elevator and in my slight post partum anxiety, I was afraid to go to sleep with the baby in the room. I feared someone coming up the elevator and taking the baby while I slept. In 2014, my daughter was moved from labor and delivery where she also completed her recovery to a Mother Baby Unit. Both she and her baby remained in the room 24/7 to facilitate breast feeding. The Mother Baby Unit is high security and is a locked unit, a bit like a modern day psychiatric unit. Family members with a pass must be buzzed in each time they wish to enter. To prevent babies being kidnapped, each baby is not only double labelled, ...
When the tip of the nose is compressed gently in the presence of a dislocated septum, the deformity appears to worsen. In this photo, the tip of the nose is actually beside the base of the septum. With positional deformity, the septum would stay straight, even if the nares appear uneven. Although some authors estimate the incidence of dislocated septum to be as high as 4%, in our experience this condition is quite rare. An experienced pediatric otolaryngologist can relocate the septum fairly easily, without surgery, if consulted early (within the first few days of life), so recognition of this condition and timely referral is important to prevent permanent deformity.. ...
Posted on 11/16/2012 2:02:48 PM PST by neverdem. Whole-genome analysis helps identify source of MRSA outbreak on infant ward. A superbug outbreak that plagued a special-care neonatal unit in Cambridge, UK, for several months last year was brought to an end by insights gained from genome sequencing. The case, reported today in Lancet Infectious Disease, marks the first time that scientists have sequenced pathogen genomes to actively control an ongoing outbreak1. Sharon Peacock, a clinical microbiologist at the University of Cambridge, and her team became involved in the outbreak after three infants at nearby Rosie Hospital s 24-cot special-care baby unit tested positive for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) within a couple days of each other. Bacteria isolated from the three infants were resistant to a nearly identical spectrum of antibiotics, pointing to a common source, says Peacock. The unit was scrubbed clean, and officials hoped that the outbreak was over. Out of scientific ...
During three months in 1975 admissions to 17 of the 21 special-care baby units in the North-west Thames region were analysed by birth weight and category of care. Of the 1,718 babies admitted, one-third needed only observation. Neonatal intensive care formed only a small proportion of the work load in most units. Considerable variation in the pattern of admissions was found. There was some evidence of concentration, about 100 babies being transferred for urgent medical or surgical reasons, and the work load of one unit suggested that it was serving as a referral centre. It is concluded that the quality of care given to some infants needing intensive care might be improved by greater concentration, and that some units should review their admission policies in order to prevent unnecessary postpartum separation of mother and baby. ...

The purpose of the Wasie Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is to take care of newborns who require more care than our Newborn Nursery can provide.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cardiac defects account for nearly 30 percent of infant deaths. In the past, lawmakers have had the foresight to create a newborn-health-screening panel, and recent studies have demonstrated the need for pulse oximetry as a tool to help identify heart disease, a logical progression of diagnosing newborn health. An estimated 300 infants with an unrecognized congenital heart defect are discharged each year from newborn nurseries in the U.S. These babies are at risk for serious complications within the first few days or weeks of life and often require emergency care.
My career in medicine began 30 years ago when as a teenager I volunteered five days a week at Logan Regional Hospital newborn nursery. After obtaining my nursing assistant certification in 1986, I worked as a CNA in a skilled nursing facility while attending nursing school. I entered the medical transcription profession in 1989 and have since worked for many of the largest medical centers across the country, documenting patient records for every medical specialty.I began freelance writing and editing in early high school and continue to do freelance editing and writing in paid and volunteer positions. In 2003 I enrolled at Utah State University with a full scholarship. I continued to work in transcription part time while attending classes full time. I graduated in December 2008 with bachelors degrees in English/Professional and Technical Writing and in Psychology with minors in biology and business management.. Huntsville, Ala. - HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, a nonprofit genomics and genetics research institute in Huntsville, Ala., in collaboration with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine and the University of Mississippi Medical Center, has been awarded a four-year, $10 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to investigate how genome sequencing can help with the diagnosis and care of babies with birth defects and genetic disorders.. The project, SouthSeq: DNA Sequencing for Newborn Nurseries in the South, is part of a network of nationwide sites called the Clinical Sequencing Evidence-Generating Research Consortium, or CSER2, and will enroll infants in neonatal nurseries with birth defects and/or other signs suggestive of a genetic disorder. The Family Birthing Center at YRMC East in Prescott Valley was designed and constructed from the beginning to care for premature infants. The Center, which opened May 26, 2010, followed Arizona Department of Health Services requirements that specify, for example, the amount of space between each baby in the nursery.. After its opening, YRMCs Family Birthing Center nurses, obstetricians and pediatricians immediately began working together to achieve Level II Perinatal certification. The Centers registered nurses were cross trained on all aspects of neonatal care, including, for example, how to provide supplemental oxygen, prevent infections, administer medications and manage feeding tubes.. Additionally, the nurses participated in a rigorous series of classroom courses conducted by YRMCs neonatal nurse practitioner. The Centers nurses and YRMC respiratory therapists also pursued on-site training in the neonatal unit of another hospital.. The Family Birthing Centers staff has been working ...
compensate for this, mothers were used as the heat sources for their babies. Each mother reclined comfortably in a chair with her gown or shirt opened to the front. And each mothers infant, wearing only a diaper, was placed in an upright, prone position on his or her mothers chest for one- to three-hour segments. A blanket draped over mother and baby helped to provide thermal stability and privacy.. The infants held by their mothers in this way began to gain weight more quickly and maintain their body temperatures sooner than infants who didnt experience this kind of care.. These improvements led to shorter stays in the NICU. As the practice expanded, KC grew to include healthy, term infants and now includes fathers, grandparents and siblings as KC providers. Though it began as a temporary solution to a practical problem, KC now holds a respected place in current practice due to the many benefits it provides to infants, families and health care providers.. The most prominent challenge in ...

The second case occurred in August 2001, in a different hospital and city. The mother was also of Asian descent (Indonesian) and had tested positive for HBsAg midway through her pregnancy. The HBsAg lab result was recorded on the prenatal record, which was sent to the hospital. The hospital staff also recorded the HBsAg-positive test result on the hospitals obstetrical evaluation sheet. It was not acted upon by either the delivering physician or the labor and delivery staff, nor was the mothers HBsAg-positive test result communicated to or noted by the newborn nursery. The hospital did not have a policy in place to address management of babies born to HBsAg-positive mothers or to mothers of unknown status. The infant received neither HBIG nor hepatitis B vaccine at birth. In fact, the high-risk infant did not receive the first dose of hepatitis B vaccine until two months of age. Unfortunately, this child has also tested HBsAg positive ...

Note also the influence of the misunderstood AAP recommendation - exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months - not just breastfeed for 6 months! And breastfeeding should continue for at least one year or as long as mutually desired. Note the at least is usually not noted, nor the desire of the baby or mother to continue. Having become a subset of the medical community as seen by the AAP recommendation, it is considered as a dose of medicine - take it exclusively for 6 months then finish your dose at a year. (AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS POLICY STATEMENT: Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk 2005) …exclusive breastfeeding is sufficient to support optimal growth and development for approximately the first 6 months of life and provides continuing protection against diarrhea and respiratory tract infection. Breastfeeding should be continued for at least the first year of life and beyond for as long as mutually desired by mother and child.. No, breastfeeding is not a medicine; ...

Whilst breastfeeding is the desired feeding outcome for preterm infants, the attainment of oral feeding skills varies widely between infants and little is known about the development of preterm breastfeeding skills. Further, the use of bottle-feeding teats and nipple shields is common, and the degree of breast fullness varies between feeds, yet the impact of these on the achievement of full oral feeding is not known. In this project the trajectory of breastfeeding skill development will be investigated. We will also examine the effects of different teats and breastfeeding conditions on milk transfer volume, intraoral vacuum, suck-swallow-breathe coordination and breastfeeding duration. Information gained from this study will provide an evidence base for facilitation of breastfeeding in the neonatal nursery setting.. ...

N2 - Advances in audiologic technology make it possible to identify hearing loss in the neonatal nursery. With this opportunity, audiologists are able to test infants before hospital discharge. Neonatal hearing screening programs are becoming the standard of care in both well baby and intensive care nurseries. Some programs screen for hearing loss, whereas others carry out diagnostic threshold ABR testing. The most effective protocol seems to depend on individual program parameters and characteristics. Technological advances have provided audiologists with the ability to identify hearing loss reliably before 12 months of age. Governmental and professional position statements emphasize the importance of this endeavor. With concentrated effort, audiologists must accept this challenge and develop large-scale screening programs to identify hearing loss in neonates ...

Were very surprised to see a lot of concern about new baby clothes, said Sarah M. Ritter, one of the authors of the report, a project that looks at whats changing with fashion in the next decade.. Ritter said that even though baby clothes were invented long ago, there are still plenty of ways to keep a baby warm in the cold, damp environment of the newborn nursery.. They can be used for sleeping, they can be a great place to keep things dry, and they can provide some protection from the elements, she said.. The matron of the nursery was Miss Evelyn Long, who was recruited to run Gladwyn in 1940 on an annual salary of £120. She had a small staff consisting of an assistant matron, a staff nurse, a nursery maid, a teacher, a cook, a gardener and several probationer nursery nurses. As Miss Long noted remarked to the reporter, When we got here we felt we had dropped into heaven.. The nursery took an active part in the community. For example, Miss Long established a rabbit club at the nursery as part of the general war effort. These clubs were encouraged by the Ministry of Agriculture to help with food production as part of the Dig for Victory campaign to help with food shortages during the war. The Ministry kept a register of rabbit clubs and the Gladwyn club was the 2,000th to be registered in 1942. The club housed its rabbits in an old stable in hutches made from old boxes and broken play pens, noted by the Reynolds News reporter as a way of helping the National larder. It is with deep regret that we learn that one of the principal rail roads in the State of Pennsylvania, now constructing, will run to the city directly through the nursery of Col. Carr, and will cut up the grounds in such a manner as to entirely destroy their beauty; but what is a source of yet deeper regret, is the destruction which it will cause of some of the old and still beautiful specimens of trees which ornament the place; several of these, which have long served as a memento of the zealous labors of the elder Bartram and his sons, will fall by the woodmans axe.
