The trial by York et al supports the contribution of a CNS to quality of care and cost containment. Results affirm other studies that have examined the practice, education, and support role of the clinically specific CNS. Both direct and telephone contact by a nurse specialist have been shown to be beneficial.1, 2 The economic analysis adds evidence for the cost effectiveness of the CNS role.. The study was randomised, although the discordant sample size in the 2 groups was noted by the authors. Participants were from an urban American population, primarily African-American. Results and costs may differ for perinatal concerns other than diabetes and hypertension. The study was done between 1988 and 1991. Changing care practices may influence current benefits.. The study findings are relevant to community or hospital nurses and nurse administrators. Educators who plan graduate curricula should also note the skills and knowledge necessary for effective functioning in the CNS role.. The results ...

I had just starting washing the first rim when my cell phone started ringing. It was an unknown number from Texas. My heart started pounding out of my chest. I answered. It was the nurse manager. She sounded happy. She started by saying that the panel absolutely loved me and that they would like to offer me a position in their new graduate program and to join their team. They couldnt imagine their team without me! I flipped! Well, not out loud. I kept my cool on the phone. She asked if I would accept the position. I said I would absolutely love too and then the choir went off. The panel was on speaker phone and they started shouting "yay!!" That just put a huge smile on my face. My nurse manager asked if I had any more questions for the moment and I said "Definitely not right now." She laughed and we hung up ...

Thats why I left the floor. I had a few wonderful aides on the floor I used to work. But most of the unlicensed personnel were just the pits! And I was ultimately responsible for them! The last straw was when I finally wrote an aide up for lying to me about taking vital signs (she didnt, and left without doing them!) and my nurse manager gave her a freaking pep talk and then tore my report up! It really let me know how much management respected me as a professional. AND several of the crappy aides (not the good ones) banded together after that to make my life as hellish as possible. But I didnt care by that time. I was outta there, and just told them, Keep it up and Ill write you all up for insubordination! And the write-ups will go over our managers head! I dare ya! Cause I am itching to clean house before I leave here! After that, I got left alone and even got a phone call at home from my manager about what could be done to keep the nurses from running out the door. In a nutshell, I ...

One of the nurse blogs I read just recently put up the story from NYC (I think), of a pro-life nurse who was forced to attend and assist with an abortion. She tried to get out of it numerous ways, including reminding the nurse manager that she had told them on being hired that she would not assist at abortions and was told that was fine; and was finally told that the mother would die without an abortion (which was false), in order to ultimately coerce her into assisting. She is suing over this. Several nurses chimed in saying that their hospitals have policies that if you dont want to attend abortions, thats fine, and theyve never heard of anything like this. Others said (kinda snarkily) If she was so set against abortions, she shouldnt work in L&D to start with. The general tenor of the conversation, though, was that this nurse was probably being taught a lesson by somebody with attitude or something, because of how easy it would be to switch assignments (it appeared that the nurse came ...
Mary Ann Kenney sums up her temporary time at ODS this way: "A totally positive experience.". "From the first day, the staff will tell you, I appreciate you," she says. "Its such a great staff. I want to do PRN and come back!" Kenney says Cathy Spargo, assistant nurse manager of the Outpatient Care Unit, "worked her butt off" to make sure her Martin Center team had the opportunity to get hours in alternative roles. "She has gone above and beyond to get the staff hours. She makes sure hours are divided evenly.". Kenney wanted to find a way to help during the closures and the crisis, and ODS was the perfect opportunity.. She had worked in a dialysis unit 15 years ago, and a lot has changed.. "This is a whole different side of nursing," she says. "The Martin Center team is one of the best groups of people Ive ever worked with. The staff at dialysis is just as good.". Kenney says the change has been challenging, but the ODS team has made it worthwhile. "Its rewarding, but it is hard work. They ...

My mood peaks about 5 minutes after leaving the ED and is at a nadir 5 minutes prior to walking in. This is a global problem, as I have had partners leave for greener pastures, only to find those pastures covered with an enormous amount of cow shit. It wasnt always this way, but has worsened severely over the last 20-30 year with the "entitlement" generation. I really dont think I would be as miserable if people were appreciating that at 5:00 a.m. with cortisol levels waning I am still able to provide care with a smile (well, nearly a smile). And money be damned, they could pay me twice as much, life is too short for this shit. I could whistle digging ditches and be happy, if all those jobs are already taken by undocumented near-citizens. Having to answer to 50 different people/organizations/bitchy-needy ungrateful patients/nurse managers and having near zero autonomy to practice how I was trained takes a toll. Example-get a call the other night from admitting nurse saying the 88 year old ...

Sele (Leo) Akioyamen always knew he wanted to work with people and science, and with his grades in high school, he could have chosen from any number of career paths. In the end, it was the experience of his parents that made him choose to study nursing at McMaster.. The Akioyamens were bankers in Nigeria before coming to Canada and making the career change to nursing. Today, they work as nurse managers in mental health.. When I saw them go through nursing school here, I saw a change in them. They became better people as they became nurses; better parents, more understanding, and better at listening to people, said Akioyamen. This had a huge impact on why I chose nursing. I wanted to provide a better level of care, to share the importance of patients stories, and to truly have an impact on their lives.. The second-year nursing student from Scarborough is being honoured for his academic achievements, which include earning top marks in first year. Akioyamen is one of more than 300 students ...

My cancer story will always play a major part of who I am as a person, but its also the reason that I chose the career that I did," Lewis said. "Theres a certain strength and hope I find in each patient I care for, and I feel a connection to them that I dont think others can experience.. "With that, I hope to inspire families and become a source of comfort and light during their challenging times.". Pinson agreed wholeheartedly.. "When I was going through treatment, I always thought about this," she said. "Today, I am happier than I have ever been in my life.". Christopher Noll, BSN, RN, NE-BC, nurse manager of the pediatric oncology unit, hired both young women, and says its heartwarming to watch them give the same compassionate care they received.. "Its really wonderful when someone comes into health care with a compelling personal experience, and many members of my staff have stories about how cancer impacted their lives," Noll said. "These two not only have compelling stories, but what ...

What is wrong and embarrassing is the President of the United States reciting a massively discredited factoid. The 23-cent gender pay gap is simply the difference between the average earnings of all men and women working full-time. It does not account for differences in occupations, positions, education, job tenure, or hours worked per week. When all these relevant factors are taken into consideration, the wage gap narrows to about five cents. And no one knows if the five cents is a result of discrimination or some other subtle, hard-to-measure difference between male and female workers. In its fact-checking column on the State of the Union, the Washington Post included the presidents mention of the wage gap in its list of dubious claims. "There is clearly a wage gap, but differences in the life choices of men and women… make it difficult to make simple comparisons." ...
Of course, candidates for your finance department should first be considered based on their experience, skills and education. But to find the right hire, you should also ask questions that show their character. Are they a hard worker, a team player, a go getter? Do they take on challenges or shy away from them?. You can discover more about candidates by addressing these four topics that other business leaders use:. 1. Favorite tasks and roles. If a person likes doing something, theyre probably good at it. Thats why you want to ask, "What do you like best about your current job?" Whether their answer is "solving payment issues" or "creating financial reports," youll start to see if they have what youre looking for and how theyd fit in with your department and company overall.. 2. Ideal work style. Some people like to keep their heads down and get the job done, while others favor a bustling office with lots of teamwork. The question "What type of work style do you prefer?" can give you more ...
