The trial by York et al supports the contribution of a CNS to quality of care and cost containment. Results affirm other studies that have examined the practice, education, and support role of the clinically specific CNS. Both direct and telephone contact by a nurse specialist have been shown to be beneficial.1, 2 The economic analysis adds evidence for the cost effectiveness of the CNS role.. The study was randomised, although the discordant sample size in the 2 groups was noted by the authors. Participants were from an urban American population, primarily African-American. Results and costs may differ for perinatal concerns other than diabetes and hypertension. The study was done between 1988 and 1991. Changing care practices may influence current benefits.. The study findings are relevant to community or hospital nurses and nurse administrators. Educators who plan graduate curricula should also note the skills and knowledge necessary for effective functioning in the CNS role.. The results ...

I had just starting washing the first rim when my cell phone started ringing. It was an unknown number from Texas. My heart started pounding out of my chest. I answered. It was the nurse manager. She sounded happy. She started by saying that the panel absolutely loved me and that they would like to offer me a position in their new graduate program and to join their team. They couldnt imagine their team without me! I flipped! Well, not out loud. I kept my cool on the phone. She asked if I would accept the position. I said I would absolutely love too and then the choir went off. The panel was on speaker phone and they started shouting yay!! That just put a huge smile on my face. My nurse manager asked if I had any more questions for the moment and I said Definitely not right now. She laughed and we hung up ...

Thats why I left the floor. I had a few wonderful aides on the floor I used to work. But most of the unlicensed personnel were just the pits! And I was ultimately responsible for them! The last straw was when I finally wrote an aide up for lying to me about taking vital signs (she didnt, and left without doing them!) and my nurse manager gave her a freaking pep talk and then tore my report up! It really let me know how much management respected me as a professional. AND several of the crappy aides (not the good ones) banded together after that to make my life as hellish as possible. But I didnt care by that time. I was outta there, and just told them, Keep it up and Ill write you all up for insubordination! And the write-ups will go over our managers head! I dare ya! One of the nurse blogs I read just recently put up the story from NYC (I think), of a pro-life nurse who was forced to attend and assist with an abortion. She tried to get out of it numerous ways, including reminding the nurse manager that she had told them on being hired that she would not assist at abortions and was told that was fine; and was finally told that the mother would die without an abortion (which was false), in order to ultimately coerce her into assisting. She is suing over this. Several nurses chimed in saying that their hospitals have policies that if you dont want to attend abortions, thats fine, and theyve never heard of anything like this. Others said (kinda snarkily) If she was so set against abortions, she shouldnt work in L&D to start with. The general tenor of the conversation, though, was that this nurse was probably being taught a lesson by somebody with attitude or something, because of how easy it would be to switch assignments (it appeared that the nurse came ...

Mary Ann Kenney sums up her temporary time at ODS this way: A totally positive experience.. From the first day, the staff will tell you, I appreciate you, she says. Its such a great staff. I want to do PRN and come back! Kenney says Cathy Spargo, assistant nurse manager of the Outpatient Care Unit, worked her butt off to make sure her Martin Center team had the opportunity to get hours in alternative roles. She has gone above and beyond to get the staff hours. She makes sure hours are divided evenly.. Kenney wanted to find a way to help during the closures and the crisis, and ODS was the perfect opportunity.. She had worked in a dialysis unit 15 years ago, and a lot has changed.. This is a whole different side of nursing, she says. The Martin Center team is one of the best groups of people Ive ever worked with. The staff at dialysis is just as good.. Kenney says the change has been challenging, but the ODS team has made it worthwhile. Its rewarding, but it is hard work. They ...

Downloadable (with restrictions)! This paper examines whether or not a prolonged unemployment period can raise the quality of job matching after unemployment. We focus on job tenure as an indicator of a good quality job match after unemployment. We match two sets of Japanese administrative data compiled by the public employment security offices: one includes information about the circumstances of job seekers receiving unemployment insurance, and the other includes information about job seekers applying for jobs. We first show a negative relationship between unemployment duration and the subsequent job duration. Restricting the sample to job seekers who changed search behaviors in the final 59days before expiration of unemployment insurance, we secondly show an even greater negative effect of unemployment duration on the following job duration. The importance lies not only in the duration of unemployment. If job seekers keep a high reservation wage and a low search intensity because of the benefits of

niversity of Utah Health is the only place Ive worked as a nurse. I have 11 years of experience in intensive care units. For four years, I split my time between SICU and NCC. Six years ago, I became NCCs nurse educator; four years ago, I became nurse manager.. The team on NCC-nurses, health care assistants, nurse practitioners, social workers, therapists, pharmacists, neurosurgeons, neurologists, neurointensivists, and fellows-is responsible for caring for critically ill or injured patients. They usually come straight from the emergency department or bypass ED altogether if theyre flown in with head trauma.. In March 2014, NCC nearly doubled, from 15 to 23 beds, becoming the largest and most technologically advanced neuro critical care unit in the Mountain West. I had to hire 20 new nurses, and most didnt have the necessary skills for such a high-acuity setting.. The AMS-GUI is the Graphical User Interface for the Amsterdam Modeling Suite. It consists of several modules for specific tasks. Those modules work together and exchange information.. All the AMS-GUI modules have one common SCM menu on the top left of the window. You can use the commands inside the SCM menu to start other GUI modules (or switch to them).. In general when selecting a GUI module from the SCM menu it will start and open the current job. If that module is already open with the current job, it will be activated (brought to the foreground). The current job is the selected job in AMSjobs, or the job open in some other GUI module if you use the SCM menu in that module.. ...

Lower level managers are employees who have one hierarchical level under them. In health care that means nurse and physician managers at the unit level.. First-line managers are members of two organization subsystems, the managerial structure and the unit supervised. This can cause problems if the demands of these subsystems come into conflict. The position needs balance between different values. First-line managers operate at the core of the action. They deal with people as individuals rather than as groups.. As the first-line managers work close to the operative core, the nature of their work is short-term, fluctuating and fractured. It has some regular variation in the long-term, but the lower the hierarchical position is, the more short-term the duties are. Because of the nature of the action, reactions must be immediate, and the main concern is maintaining the fluency of work processes.. Compared to other management levels, managerial roles in first-line management are the same, but the ...

There are those new nurses who are now popping up in various hospital units all over the country that make me feel bad for the nurse managers they scammed into getting the job they did not deserve. These are the nurses who studied along side me, or I should say, were supposed to study but ended up cheating their was through school and barely squeezed by on practicals. I remember one girl was going to be thrown out or our class because she put her patients safety at risk during our clinical rotation on two separate occasions with different patients. She was spared on a technicality - nothing ended up happening to her patients. That was only because other nursing students were constantly peeking into the rooms she was assigned to so they could check in on her patients and correct her mistakes. If there are people who naturally belong in nursing, there are those who definitely need to stay away. Unfortunately, theres little a school or administration in a hospital can do to weed out the ...

The use of antipsychotic drugs as a chemical cosh for people with Alzheimers disease has proved very controversial and a new survey by the Alzheimers Society suggests that it is still a problem. The survey - of over 650 nurses and 450 nurse managers - showed widespread use of the drugs, sometimes purely to control difficult patients. Government guidelines say the drugs can be given if patients are severely agitated or violent but critics claim that they are overused to keep patients sedated and make life easier for staff.
