Pre-mRNAs get cleaved downstream of the poly(A) signal (often AAUAAA) and polyadenylated (up to 250 adenosin residues) by a multi-protein complex, which consists of different subcomplexes. The complete compositon, structure and mechanism of the polyadenylation machinery is still unclear.
