Answers from experts on how do they measure nuchal translucency. First: Nuchal translucency (nt) is typically measured between weeks 11 and 14. The sonographer measures the thickness of the tissues of the back of the fetal neck. After the image is magnified, calipers are placed along the inner margin of the tissues of the neck.

The nuchal translucency scan evaluates your babys risk of having Down syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities, as well as major congenital heart problems. This non-invasive test taken during the first trimester uses ultrasound to measure the thickness of the fluid found at the back of your developing babys neck. Babies with abnormalities tend to accumulate more fluid at the back of their neck during the first trimester.. ...
A nuchal scan or nuchal translucency (NT) scan/procedure is a sonographic prenatal screening scan (ultrasound) to detect cardiovascular abnormalities in a fetus, though altered extracellular matrix composition and limited lymphatic drainage can also be detected. Since chromosomal abnormalities can result in impaired cardiovascular development, a nuchal translucency scan is used as a screening, rather than diagnostic, tool for conditions such as Down syndrome, and non-chromosomal abnormalities, including the genetic Di George syndrome and non-genetic Body-stalk anomaly. The scan is carried out at 11-13+6 weeks pregnancy and assesses the quantity of fluid collecting within the nape of the fetal neck. There are two distinct measurements - the nuchal translucency, which is measured earlier in pregnancy at the end of the first trimester, and for which there is a lower threshold for increased diameter, and the nuchal fold, which is measured towards the end of the second trimester. The scan may also ...

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the performance of first-trimester screening for trisomy 21 by a combination of maternal age, fetal nuchal translucency (NT) and maternal serum free beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-hCG) and pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A). In addition, the potential impact of a new individual risk-orientated two-stage approach to first-trimester screening was ...
There were 37 078 normal pregnancies and 264 with trisomy 21, 81 with trisomy 18, 38 with trisomy 13 and 27 with Turner syndrome. We found that firstly, contrary to the assumption underlying the delta NT method, the distribution of delta NT changes with CRL and secondly, contrary to the assumption underlying the MoM method the distribution of NT was not Gaussian. Fetal NT followed two distributions, one that was dependent on CRL and one that was independent of CRL. The distribution in which NT increases with CRL was observed in about 95% of euploid fetuses, 5% with trisomy 21, 30% with trisomy 18, 15% with trisomy 13 and 10% with Turner syndrome. The median CRL-independent NT was 2.0 mm for the euploid group and 3.4, 5.5, 4.0 and 7.8 mm for trisomies 21, 18, 13 and Turner syndrome, respectively. ...
Betamethasone is proven to be better than dexamethasone in reducing the neonatal morbidity and mortality, and cause less incidence of chorioamnionitis(1,2). However, as the betamethasone salt available in India is different from that used in international trials (3), same conclusion cannot be drawn, and either dexamethasone or betamethasone may be used depending upon availability.. There is also concern over increased prevalence of undiagnosed maternal infections in India, hence, more trials are needed on safety of use of corticosteroids. One of the trials showed increase in neonatal mortality and maternal infection with use of ACS in low-income and middle-income countries (4).. Use of ACS in late preterm babies (34 - 37 weeks) and early term (37 - 39 weeks) has been a matter of controversy so far and more data are needed to either support or refute the use of ACS in these populations. There are definite short-term benefits (mainly in reducing transient tachypnea of newborn) with some ...

What is a maternal fetal medicine (MFM) specialist?. Maternal fetal medicine specialists are doctors who are specially trained to care for women with high-risk pregnancies. Mothers with diseases such as hypertension or diabetes, babies with possible genetic conditions or mothers expecting multiple babies can all benefit from the care of a maternal fetal medicine specialist. These doctors receive two to three years of additional training that focuses on high-risk pregnancies, ultrasound techniques and fetal anomalies.. Why would an expectant mother wish to be referred to a maternal fetal medicine specialist?. Most women seek consultation from or care by a maternal fetal medicine specialist because they are at risk and considering becoming pregnant or because they are pregnant and high-risk, complicated or otherwise worried about their pregnancy.. What types of patients are seen by maternal fetal medicine specialists?. Patients undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic procedures during ...

Now, prior to going into that, my sort of published risk of Downs was 1 in 240, I think. And then once hed finished it, it was 1 in 958, which he said was a very good result, and that I shouldnt be worried about it. And I asked him if we should have any other tests, and he said, No, no, no. Thats a great result, dont worry. ...

Your baby needs to be delivered in a hospital which has a neonatal (newborn baby) intensive care unit where a specialist team can carry out the immediate care that your baby will require after birth. This team will also organise the safe transfer of your baby to the childrens heart unit if this is the plan after birth.. If the hospital where you initially booked to have the baby is a small district hospital they may not have these facilities. It may therefore be necessary to transfer your obstetric care to a unit which has these specialist services.. When an abnormality is found in a baby, the focus of attention for you and the healthcare professionals shifts towards the baby. It is very important that the needs of the mother are not forgotten. All the normal antenatal check-ups should proceed as planned with your midwife or your GP or at the hospital.. There may be extra scans arranged at the specialist unit to monitor the babys condition and often parents find these consultations and the ...

It has been, and still is, a very emotional thing to go through. Ill never forget the day the doctors told us our baby had a problem. We went into our 14 week Nuchal Translucency scan, it was a just in case sort of thing and really I just wanted another excuse to see our baby again. After about 40 minutes of scanning and happily watching our baby move around the sonographer told us there was a defect. We had never heard of gastroschisis and after a lot of tears together, and with our family, we set about researching every single possible piece of information that was available. I googled, you tubed, read about, dreamed about, obsessed about, finding out what our baby would be facing ...

The scan went well- NT measurement was counted as 2.2 (that was the highest of several measurements she took, but I guess they count the highest one). The tech and my OB were very happy with this, especially given that I was measuring a couple days ahead at 13wks0days (they said that the normal measurement depends a bit on how far along you are- in this case, the OB said up to 2.8 would have been fine). They did see the nasal bone and there were all 4 limbs so that was good! Although, there was a moment at the beginning of the scan where I started internally freaking out b/c I saw 2 arms, but no legs! It turned out it was just how the baby and the probe were positioned, and I breathed a sigh of relief when 2 little legs and feet came into view. Funny the things you can freak out about! The baby was making little motions with its shoulders like Bill Cosby did in the Jello commercials (I dont know if anyone knows what Im talking about...) but my husband asked if it was normal for the baby to ...

Objective. To determine the translucency of human and bovine enamel and dentin using reflection spectrophotometers. Material and Methods. The color of intact human and bovine enamel and dentin specimens was measured over a white and a black plasticine backing using two spectrophotometers with different aperture sizes; translucency parameter (TP) and contrast ratio (CR) were calculated. Plasticine was used as backing because the specimens were not uniform. The TP values of five composite resins measured over the backings of plasticine and reflectance standards were also determined. Results. There were no significant differences between the TP values of the composite resins measured over the backings of plasticine and reflectance standards (p,0.05). Mean TP values of 1 mm thick bovine enamel, bovine dentin, human enamel and human dentin were 14.7, 15.2, 18.7, and 16.4, respectively, based on the 3 mm round aperture. There were significant correlations between the TP values measured by the two ...
This was a prospective observational study of an unselected obstetric population in whom routine anomaly scans are performed at 18-23 weeks gestation. Between January 1997 and August 1999 all women booked for antenatal care at our institution and subsequently delivered within our unit were included in the study. High risk referrals from other hospitals were excluded to eliminate bias.. Two full time and four part time sonographers working only in obstetric ultrasound performed routine ultrasound scans. The obstetric ultrasound service was situated within a unit that provided fetal medicine and echocardiography services. High resolution ultrasound equipment with a cineloop facility (ATL 3000/5000, Letchworth, UK and Acuson XP10, Uxbridge, UK) was used. In the majority of patients, nuchal translucency thickness was measured in the first trimester for screening of aneuploidy, as previously described.18 At the 18-23 week ultrasound scan, as part of the routine structural survey, the four chamber ...
The Integrated test is a two-stage screening that assesses the risk of a baby being born with Down syndrome, Trisomy 18, and Open Neural Tube Defects (ONTDs). The first stage can be performed between 11 weeks and 13 weeks and 6 days. The second stage can be performed between 15 and 22 weeks.. In the first stage, an ultrasound scan is used to precisely determine the gestational age of the pregnancy (to ensure that testing is being performed at the proper time.) An ultrasound measurement of the babys neck called a nuchal translucency is taken (NT and Nasal Bone Sonographer must be certified), and a blood sample is drawn to measure the level of pregnancy associated plasma protein (PAPP-A) and total b-hCG ...
As discussed in my previous post, we found that all looks good and normal (one of the only times in life where that word is the highest level of awesome) and that we will be welcoming a little girl into our world.. There were however some aspects I didnt mention abut the scan itself. My appointment was for 1h45 on Tuesday and as most mommies will know the 12 week scan is the nuchal scan where they screen for the probability of Down Syndrome and other chromosomal disorders and potential heart defects (all terror inducing in themselves).. The scan can only be done in the very brief window between 11 weeks and 13 weeks and 6 days, as it is only during this time that the nuchal translucency (a collection of fluid at the back of Babys neck) is clearly visible. This is because once Babys lymphatic system is fully developed, which should be by the 14th week, it should naturally drain away any excessive fluid (or so Wikipedia says). To make things further complicated, Baby has to be lying with her ...

Choosing Wisely began as an apparently reasonable, mom and apple pie program but may well be morphing into more than that or at the least a number of policy wonks ( and the former CEO of ABIMF) want it to be more controlling than the simple conversation between physician and patient that is was originally purported to be.See here for a commentary about remarks made by the former CEO of the ABIMF ( Dr. John Benson) on the ABIMF blog and by Dr. N, Mortin writing in the NEJM. OUR HYPOTHESIS. We designed a clinical intervention, safely producing a post-exertional malaise (PEM), a hallmark symptom of ME / CFS. We hypothesized that a standardized stress-test inducing PEM, will reveal a more specific disease signature associated with ME / CFS symptoms. In that context, we investigated the role of circulating microRNAs, which are small non-coding RNA molecules that can be detected in the blood as well as in other biological fluids.. WHY THIS STUDY MATTERS FOR ME. Studying microRNAs might help to bridge the conceptual gap between genetic predisposition and environmental factors causing ME / CFS or exacerbating specific symptoms. Equally important, the design of a portable clinical intervention allows investigating severely ill persons with ME / CFS, especially the ones that are housebound.. OUR KEY FINDINGS. ...

The diaphragm is a thin muscle that separates the chest from the belly. It moves up and down during breathing to help the lungs empty and fill with air. Sometimes when the baby is developing before birth, the muscles in the diaphragm do not grow together completely. This leaves an opening (hole) that allows the intestines to move up into the babys chest. The pressure of the intestines pushes the heart slightly to one side. This is called diaphragmatic hernia..
