Eosinophilic angiocentric fibrosis (EAF) is a rare submucosal fibrosis. The patients experienced a nasal cavity mass, maxillary pain, or nasal obstructive symptoms of long duration. The process has been reported in the nasal septum, nasal cavity, and/or the maxillary sinus. It does not seem to have systemic associations with known diseases. OUTLINE. ...
OBJECTIVES. Nasal discharge, sneezing, epistaxis and stertor are common signs of nasal disease in dogs. Differential diagnosis includes chronic hyperplastic rhinitis, nasal aspergillosis and nasal tumours. Diagnosis is usually established from a combination of results from the clinical history, physical examination, serology, radiography, rhinoscopy and biopsy. In a number of dogs, radiography allows differentiation between chronic rhinitis, nasal aspergillosis and nasal neoplasia, but in other cases the differentiation is not clear-cut. More recently, the use of computed tomography has been reported to help differentiate nasal diseases. The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in the diagnosis and assessment of canine nasal disease.. MATERIALS. Eight dogs were referred to the Queens Veterinary School for investigation of nasal disease. MR imaging was performed in each dog under general anaesthesia using a dedicated veterinary MRI unit (Vet-MR®, ...
ABSTRACT. Chronic nasal disease is a common problem in dogs. To determine the aetiology, a retrospective study in 75 dogs with persistent and chronic nasal disease was done. All dogs were evaluated by means of survey nasal radiographs, antegrade and retrograde rhinoscopy, bacterial and fungal cultures, and histopathology. A definitive diagnosis was made in 74/75 cases (98.6 %). Nasal neoplasia was the most common diagnosis (46.7 %), median age 108 months, followed by lympho-plasmacytic rhinitis (20 %), median age 112 months, and fungal rhinitis (10.7 %), median age 53.5 months. Other diagnoses included nasal foreign body (5.3 %), median age 51 months, and primary bacterial rhinitis (6.7 %), median age 116.5 months. Rare aetiologies identified were nasal polyps, granulomatous rhinitis, oro-nasal fistula and naso-pharyngeal stenosis. This study showed that by using a structured combination of survey radiography, rhinoscopy, cultures and histopathology, a diagnosis could be made in dogs with ...
Objectives: To determine whether disease processes related to granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) are reflected in gene expression profiles of nasal mucosa. Methods: Nasal brushings of the inferior turbinate were obtained from 32 patients with GPA (10 with active nasal disease, 13 with prior nasal disease, 9 with no history of nasal disease) and a composite comparator group with and without inflammatory nasal disease (12 healthy people, 15 with sarcoidosis, 8 with allergic rhinitis). Differential gene expression was assessed between subgroups of GPA and comparators. Results: 339 genes were differentially expressed between the GPA and comparator groups (absolute fold change | 1.5; false discovery rate | 0.05). Top canonical pathways upregulated in nasal brushings from patients with GPA include granulocyte adhesion and diapedesis (p=8.6 E-22), agranulocyte adhesion and diapedesis (p=1.3 E-14), interleukin 10 signaling (3.0 E-11), and TREM1 signaling (9.0 E-11). A set of genes differentially

Introduction. Chronic nasal disease can be a common problem in dogs. Clinical signs are a combination of sneezing, nasal discharge, epistaxis, nasal stertor, paroxysmal reverse sneezing, coughing, halitosis, open-mouth breathing, facial deformities, facial pain, discolouration of the nares and exophthalmos (Burgener, Slocombe & Zerbe 1987; Tasker et al. 1999). Various diseases of the nasal cavity present with similar clinical signs, and no one sign is pathognomonic for any particular disease (Davidson, Mathews & Koblik 2000), rendering clinical diagnosis difficult (Lobetti 2009).. Common causes of chronic nasal disease in dogs are neoplasia, fungal rhinitis and idiopathic lymphoplasmacytic rhinitis (LPR), also referred to as inflammatory rhinitis (Bolln et al. 2003; Davidson et al. 2000; Meler, Dunn & Lecuyer 2000; Tasker et al. 1999; Windsor & Johnson 2006). Other less common causes include nasal foreign body, rhinitis secondary to dental disease, parasitic rhinitis (Pneumonyssoides caninum) ...

|i|Background|/i|. Eosinophilic angiocentric fibrosis (EAF) is a rare benign condition of unknown aetiology that causes stenosis of the upper respiratory tract. It is most commonly found at the nasal septum and sinus mucosa causing mucosal thickening and nasal obstructive symptoms. The diagnosis is mainly based on characteristic histologic findings. |i|Case Report|/i|. A 27-year-old young woman presented with a slow growing mass at her anterior nasal septum for over eight years. She complained of persistent nasal obstruction, epistaxis, sometimes diffused facial pain, and chronic headache. 3 years ago, the tumor was partially resected for ventilation and a nasal septum perforation was left. Imaging findings indicated soft-tissue thickening of the anterior part of septum and adjacent lateral nasal walls. Pathological examination showed numerous inflammatory cells infiltrates containing eosinophils, fibroinflammatory lesion with a whorled appearance fibrosis which typically surrounded vessels. A diagnosis
Rhinocerebral mucormycosis is a rapidly progressive and often fatal infection frequently seen in patients with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and hematologic malignancies. The disease is difficult to diagnose because it often masquerades as bacterial sinusitis. The current report describes a 69-year-old white woman with diabetes mellitus who was prescribed high-dose prednisone therapy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Two weeks after treatment initiation, she presented to the hospital with facial edema on the right side, mouth pain, and general weakness. No black eschars on the nasal mucosae or palates were present on admission. Although bacterial etiology was initially suspected, surgery and tissue samples revealed the presence of rhinocerebral mucormycosis. The patient died at 6 days postadmission despite aggressive medical and surgical intervention. The current report discusses the risk factors associated with rhinocerebral mucormycosis as well as the necessity of early diagnosis and ...

The olfactory cleft is the specific site of development of many tumours (respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma, intestinal-type adenocarcinoma, neuroblastoma, inverted papilloma, glomangiopericytoma, etc.) and is also the site of CSF rhinorrhoea via the cribriform plate (cribri-rhinorrhoea). Olfactory cleft surgery must therefore be considered to be a specific type of surgery, complementary to ethmoidal labyrinth surgery and anterior skull base surgery. Olfactory cleft tumours can be resected according to five different surgical procedures: olfactory cleft mucosal resection, partial resection of the olfactory cleft, total resection of the olfactory cleft, unilateral endoscopic anterior skull base resection, and bilateral endoscopic anterior skull base resection ...
Sulphuric acid is an important factor in aerosol nucleation and growth. It has been shown that ions enhance the formation of sulphuric acid aerosols, but the exact mechanism has remained undetermined. Furthermore some studies have found a deficiency in the sulphuric acid budget, suggesting a missing source. In this study the production of sulphuric acid from SO2 through a number of different pathways is investigated. The production methods are standard gas phase oxidation by OH radicals produced by ozone photolysis with UV light, liquid phase oxidation by ozone, and gas phase oxidation initiated by gamma rays. The distributions of stable sulphur isotopes in the products and substrate were measured using isotope ratio mass spectrometry. All methods produced sulphate enriched in S-34 and we find an enrichment factor (delta S-34) of 8.7 +/- 0.4 parts per thousand (1 standard deviation) for the UV-initiated OH reaction. Only UV light (Hg emission at 253.65 nm) produced a clear non-mass-dependent ...
Rhinocerebral mucormycosis (RCM) is an opportunistic, potentially life-threatening fungal disease. This infective disease invades not only the facial sinuses, but also the maxilla, zygoma, and rhino-cerebral structures with a massive destruction of the facial skeletons and soft tissue. This disease progresses within various underlying diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, hematologic malignancy, renal failure, and systemic immunodepression. The relationship between mucormycosis and these underlying conditions have been discussed extensively in the literature. The authors studied 6 cases of RCM diagnosed by a tissue biopsy and treated at the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery, from 1997 to 2012. Patients were treated with several kinds of surgical interventions and antifungal agents, and their clinical & radiological signs, underlying conditions, surgical methods, and outcomes were analyzed ...
This nasolabial cyst, also known as a nasoalveolar cyst, is located superficially in the soft tissues of the upper lip. Unlike most of the other developmental cysts, the nasolabial cyst is an example of an extraosseous cyst, one that occurs outside of bone. It will therefore not show up on a radiograph, or an X-ray film ...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma is a benign glandular neoplasm of the sinonasal cavities, which presents in isolation (REAHi) or in the setting of an adjacent inflammatory process such as sinonasal polyps. It is frequently found in the olfactory clefts. CT features of the 2 clinical presentations have not been well defined. We present the CT findings of REAH, focusing on the degree of associated sinusitis and changes in the OCs. We hypothesized that widening of the OCs and associated severity of the sinusitis are diagnostic features of REAH, differentiating it from SNP. ...

In the head and neck, about 60% of lymphomas have an extranodal origin (Quraishi et al. 2000). Sinonasal tract may be involved by primary lesions (nasal cavity T-NK lymphoma and marginal zone B-cell lymphoma) and secondary lesions. For primary neoplasms, it is possible an exclusive localization within the sinonasal tract; conversely, all secondary lesions should be considered as a systemic disease. Sinonasal lesions, either primary or secondary, are mostly non-Hodgkin lymphomas, while Hodgkin lymphoma is very rarely encountered.. A difference in terms of neoplastic cells subtype, epidemiology, and site of origin between Western World and Far East is well known. In the Western World, non-Hodgkin lymphomas are mainly B-cell subtype and sinonasal tract involvement varies between 0.2 and 2% of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas (Quraishi et al. 2000). In Far East and South America instead, the most frequent cell subtype is T or NK (Nakamura et al. 1997). In the Western World, non-Hodgkin lymphomas tend to ...
Ive just watched a test strip of film that I developed using an alternative to sulphuric acid for the bleach part of the black and white reversal process! Im totally thrilled! It has come out beautifully. I have always avoided using sulphuric acid to mix my own bleach because Im quite freaked about how utterly volatile and dangerous it can be. I know there are safe ways of working with it, including loads of ventilation and goggles and lots of protective gear, but I didnt fancy having to spend loads of cash on stuff like that. And sometimes, when I have a real aversion to something, despite assurances its all ok, I like to listen to my gut. So, for a few years, Ive mostly been developing colour film, or else developing b/w film as a negative process, or using a fomapan reversal kit (which isnt brilliant for Tri-X - it makes footage shot on a sunny day look like it was really overcast, and its pretty pricey too ...

Chronic nasal discharge and sneezing are common clinical complaints in dogs. The most common causes include neoplasia, aspergillosis, nasal foreign body, rhinitis secondary to dental disease, and idiopathic or inflammatory rhinitis. An accurate history, physical examination, and a complete diagnostic work-up are helpful in determining the etiology of disease; however, these disorders are challenging to control and are often refractory to therapy.. Nasal tumors represent a small percentage of neoplasms in animals; however, the majority of cases exhibit malignant behavior through local invasion of facial bones or the central nervous system and via extension to regional lymph nodes. Tumor types include lymphosarcoma, adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, undifferentiated carcinoma, and fibrosarcoma.. Nasal aspergillosis is most commonly seen in young to middle-aged dolicocephalic dogs. German shepherd dogs and Rottweilers seem to be predisposed. In some (likely rare) cases, Aspergillus invasion ...
Surgical treatment of NSB is not commonly done. This is due to lack of consensus among ENT clinicians or rhinologists where most consider surgical treatment of NSB as aggressive and controversial [1,18]. This lack of consensus may be influenced by inconsistent histological study results. The previous papers concluded that the primary role of NSB is humidification and regulation of the temperature of inspired air because the structure possesses more percentage of seromucinous glands than venous sinusoids [2,4]. They promote the preservation of these glands to prevent mucosal dryness and crust formation. On the other hand, other study showed high proportions of venous sinusoids within swell body thus highlights its capacity to alter nasal airflow [1]. The potential to affect nasal aerodynamics led some authors to address NSB surgically. To date, there are only 3 published articles that looked at the effect of NSB reduction. One report presented nasal cautery and cryotherapy of the NSB and inferior ...

On April 12, 2009, Mexico responded to a request for verification by the World Health Organization (WHO) of an outbreak of acute respiratory illness in the small community of La Gloria, Veracruz. During April 15--17, the Mexico Ministry of Health received informal notification of clusters of rapidly progressive severe pneumonia occurring mostly in Distrito Federal (metropolitan Mexico City) and San Luis Potosi. In response, on April 17, Mexico intensified national surveillance for acute respiratory illness and pneumonia. During April 22--24, novel influenza A (H1N1) virus infection, previously identified in two children in the United States (1), was confirmed in several patients. This report updates a previous report (2) on the outbreak in Mexico and summarizes public health actions taken to date by Mexico to monitor and control the outbreak. During March 1--May 29, national surveillance identified 41,998 persons with acute respiratory illness; specimens from 25,127 (59.8%) patients were tested, ...

In a histological study of biopsy and postmortem material from 30 cases of nasal disease in which a clinical diagnosis of midline granuloma or Wegeners granuloma had been given, we selected 10 cases on the basis of the presence of widespread coagulative necrosis and atypical cells. Evidence is provided that such changes represent a malignant neoplasm of histiocytic lymphoma type. Local invasion and spread to cervical and more distant lymph nodes, spleen, liver, and kidney were seen in some of the cases. Erythrophagocytic activity was marked in the spleen in three cases and histiocytic infiltration of the bone marrow in two cases, indicating a more generalised activity of histiocytic cells. Terms such as malignant granuloma should be abandoned. In obstructive and ulcerating conditions of the nose efforts should be concentrated on making an accurate histological diagnosis.. ...
Decreased olfactory function is very common in the older population, being present in over half of those between the ages of 65 and 80 years and in over three quarters of those over the age of 80 years. Such dysfunction significantly influences physical well-being and quality of life, nutrition, the enjoyment of food, as well as everyday safety. Indeed a disproportionate number of the elderly die in accident gas poisonings each year. As described in this review, multiple factors contribute to such age-related loss, including altered nasal engorgement, increased propensity for nasal disease, cumulative damage to the olfactory epithelium from viral and other environmental insults, decrements in mucosal metabolizing enzymes, ossification of cribriform plate foramina, loss of selectivity of receptor cells to odorants, changes in neurotransmitter and neuromodulator systems, and neuronal expression of aberrant proteins associated with neurodegenerative disease. It is now well established that decreased

This is a continuation of the case below).. Astute readers, of course, recognize this as the dreaded mucormycosis. This fungal sinus infection progresses rapidly toward fulminant death. The mortality rate of rhinocerebral mucormycosis is extremely high. When we called ENT for this patient, they wanted a stat MRI scan which showed fungal invasion into the brain. ENT placed the mortality at 100% even with all aggressive treatments. Infectious disease also looked at the case and put the mortality at >95%. Mucormycosis - a disease so rare that I had only thought Id see it in textbooks - is truly a sobering diagnosis. With the concern of almost-certain fatality, we held multiple family meetings to try to understand what the patient would have wanted. She would not have wanted her face disfigured, and indeed, the marginal benefit of such a heroic intervention was not worth the cost. Eventually, the patient was made comfort care and with the aid of the palliative care service, we let her go peacefully ...
