In this interview with Jean-François Ritz, paleoseismologist and active member of Résif, the national daily newspaper focuses on the research conducted by scientists following this exceptional earthquake.. The interview evokes the characteristics and origin of the earthquake, as well as the questions it raises, which are of great interest to the academic scientific community and the organizations directly concerned by the question of risk assessment: the Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety, the French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission, EDF or the Bureau of Geological and Mining Research.. Jean-François Ritz recalls the contribution of Résif in the deployment of instruments in the field immediately after the earthquake, for the immediate availability of the data collected by these ...

Results indicated that citizens who read newspaper accounts of a police misconduct trial in Indianapolis were not significantly more likely to have negative attitudes about the police, police services, or about the harassment of citizens by the police. However, newspaper coverage of the trial did affect citizens attitudes concerning the guilt of the officers involved in the trial: the more a citizen read the newspaper, the more likely he or she was to believe the officers were guilty. Other findings indicated that citizen concern about neighborhood crime was an important predictor of attitudes toward the police and that the influence of race on citizens perceptions of police was more pronounced after the media coverage of the case. Telephone surveys were administered to 222 Indianapolis citizens living in 3 areas before the trial began and to 145 citizens in the same areas after the trial was over. Surveys focused on citizen attitudes toward the police and police services, media consumption, ...

The editor or publisher who delivered the final eulogy for freedom of the press is again sitting at his desk putting into prose form the realities of life which persons throughout the Republic will read this afternoon. We deem it a pity that after the sound of the eulogy has faded away so, too, shall fade away the newspaper readers awareness that this climate of freedom we have cherished since 1776 is constantly in danger of becoming as snioggv and uninhabitable as lu)s Angeles on a day the winds are wrong. The danger today is not from government licensing; that battle has long since been won in nearly every court in the land. D. Freedom of Expression and Belief: 4 / 16 (+1). The Cuban news media are owned and controlled by the state. The independent press is considered illegal and its publications are classified as enemy propaganda. Government agents routinely infiltrate the ranks of independent journalists, often accusing them of being mercenaries working at the behest of foreign powers. Independent journalists, particularly those associated with the islands dozen small independent news agencies or human rights groups, are subject to harassment. Nevertheless, some state media have begun to cover previously taboo topics, such as corruption in the health and education sectors. The national newspaper Granma has begun to publish letters to the editor from the public on economic issues, and state television, while generally a mouthpiece of the PCC, recently inaugurated a new program, Cuba Dice (Cuba Says), that features man-on-the-street interviews. A number of publications, especially those associated with the ...

A report in 2006 by the Sutton Trust [PDF at this link] showed that more than half of editorial posts at leading national newspapers had been educated at private schools, that is to say, middle class. As middle-class senior editors tend to appoint others like themselves, birds of a different, less privileged feather cannot find a way into the flock.. The Milburn report also pointed out that qualification inflation is a barrier towards equal social opportunities. If once an academic degree or an MA were considered desirable for a career in journalism, some people, such as Press Gazettes Dominic Ponsford, believe it is not the case any more as theoretical courses often do not provide the practical skills needed in a real newsroom.. Degrees do not come cheap. Whereas a full-time MA at City University will set back an aspiring journalist by £8,000, a number of institutions offer NCTJ-accredited courses of much shorter length.. The Brighton Journalist Works, for instance, offers a 10-week ...

IMAGE: Saudi air strike in Yemen.. Media Critique: New York Times coverage. Yesterday, the New York Times released a front page story in their early morning US domestic print edition, whose headline read:. Saudi Defiance on Yemen Reflects Limits of U.S. Strategy. The sub-header went on to describe how Saudi Arabias insistence on using airstrikes threatens larger goals, which could easily be translated as US foreign policy goals. No surprise there. But then we looked for this same article online, only to find that the headline has been changed to:. Saudi Resolve on Yemen Reflects Limits of U.S. Strategy. Some may say that changing a single word in a headline doesnt amount to very much, but then consider the weight of this word appearing at such a crucial juncture in Americas premier news source, or paper of record, and how it changes the entire tone of the article - and gives a 180º spin in terms of public relations. This is an important discussion which should be had by the ...
All newspapers on Wednesday read about the espionage scandal in Moscow, involving a Romanian diplomat: one newspaper reads that the Russian secret services leaked the tape portraying the arrest of
The paper experienced its true height of popularity during WWII and the immediate aftermath. No longer counting on émigré writers and publicists, the community had begun producing homegrown talent who thought and wrote stylistically in a very different manner than their first-generation immigrant predecessors with many of them cutting their journalistic and literary teeth on the pages of the newspaper. The third wave of immigration from the Soviet Union in 1970s brought with it a new infusion of talent into the New York Russian community. Positioning itself as the premier immigrant publication, and certainly the most sophisticated, the paper soon became a lively forum for a varied group of authors, both old and new, under the editorial leadership of Andrey Sedykh, the erstwhile personal secretary of Ivan Bunin, the famed Nobel Prize winner for literature. Due to financial difficulties and other less direct factors the oldest Russian language periodical in North America ceased publication a ...

JUAN GONZALEZ: We spend the rest of the hour with one of Latin Americas most acclaimed writers: Eduardo Galeano. His works from the trilogy Memory of Fire to the classic Open Veins of Latin America are a unique blend of history, fiction, journalism and political analysis. His books have been translated into more than 20 languages. Born in Uruguay in 1940, Eduardo Galeano began writing newspaper articles as a teenager. Though his dream was to become a soccer player, by the age of 20 he became editor-in-chief of LaMarcha. A few years later, he took the top post at Montevideos daily newspaper Epocha. At 31, Galeano wrote his most famous book The Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent.. AMY GOODMAN: After the 1973 military coup in Uruguay, Galeano was imprisoned and forced to leave the country. He settled in Argentina, where he founded and edited a cultural magazine called Crisis. After the 76 military coup there, Galeanos name was added to the list of those ...
First published in The Church of England Newspaper.. The Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church has declined to respond to questions concerning her ordination to the priesthood of a paedophile. Her silence has prompted questions from liberals and conservatives in the church about what she knew of the Rev. Bede Parrys confessed abuse of boys, and when she knew it.. Last week Fr. Parry resigned as an assistant priest on the staff of All Saints Episcopal Church in Las Vegas. On June 23 he was named as a sexual predator in a lawsuit filed by a Missouri man against Conception Abbey, a Roman Catholic monastery and seminary in Missouri. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori. Fr. Parry admitted he had abused the victim in 1987 in an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal and the Kansas City Star, but told both newspapers he had not reoffended since that time.. The lawsuit, filed in Nodaway County Circuit Court in Missouri, alleges that Parry joined the Benedictine order in 1973, leaving the ...

Saturday, May 14, 2016: The story in todays Standard newspaper alleging that the United States is seeking to blacklist Kenyas airspace is wrong. The Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) for Kenya issued by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on February 26, 2016 is part of a periodic review of existing NOTAMs. The FAA revised and reissued an existing Kenyan airspace NOTAM that has been continuously in place since 2003. It is not based on any new threat information.. The subsequent listing of this NOTAM on the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) Conflict Zone Information Repository (CZIR) website was for the purposes of information only, and is consistent with U.S. practice for other NOTAMs. Neither the NOTAM nor the website direct or suggest that airlines avoid Kenyan airspace.. Kenyas aviation security has improved in recent years. The United States recognizes this and continues to strongly support the effort to initiate direct flights between Kenya and the United States. The governments commitment to tackling female genital mutilation has been questioned after it abolished the role of FGM co-ordinator.. The post, currently held by Alan Webster, ensures multi-agency efforts are in place to tackle the issue which campaigners estimate affects about 24,000 girls living in the UK. FGM involves cutting part or all of the genitalia, often without anaesthetic.. A Home Office spokesman said the work of the co-ordinator would not be lost, but would be carried forward by individual departments where it will be better integrated. But FGM campaigners say the move - which follows government guidelines issued only last month to help practitioners identify and prevent FGM - fear it will lead to a marginalisation of the issue.. Diana Nammi, director of the Iranian and Kurdish Womens Rights Organisation, told a national newspaper that while the guidelines had been an important step forward there was no dedicated person now to ensure all organisations were acting on it. You read the headline correctly. Just when we thought the ridiculously inadequate, travesty of an investigation into the horrific death of Kendrick Johnson, the Georgia high school football player found stuffed in a gym mat, couldnt get any worse, it does: a second autopsy revealed his body and skull had been stuffed with newspaper before burial. The discovery added yet another horrific layer to KJs death and further fueled skepticism of official findings that he accidentally fell into the mat and suffocated to death-findings that are incredibly hard to believe considering that when KJs body was found, the strapping, three-sport athletes face was so battered and deformed that his post-mortem picture recalls that of slain Civil Rights icon, Emmett Till. As you can imagine, KJs parents are undone that their sons body was stuffed with old newsprint and department-store circulars, as his mom, Jacquelyn Johnson, told CNN, like he was a garbage can. We have been let down again, his father, Kenneth
Not every hospital in the USA is required to publicize details of infectious outbreaks which occur within their facilities. In 2014, details of a lethal mucormycosis outbreak[13] which occurred in 2008 emerged after television and newspaper reports responded to an article in a pediatric medical journal.[14] Contaminated hospital linen was found to be spreading the infection. A cluster of infections occurred in the wake of the 2011 Joplin tornado. As of July 19, a total of 18 suspected cases of cutaneous mucormycosis had been identified, of which 13 were confirmed. A confirmed case was defined as 1) necrotizing soft-tissue infection requiring antifungal treatment or surgical debridement in a person injured in the tornado, 2) with illness onset on or after May 22 and 3) positive fungal culture or histopathology and genetic sequencing consistent with a Mucormycete. No additional cases related to that outbreak have been reported since June 17. Ten patients required admission to an intensive-care ...
a previous version of this blog Sad Word of the Day: Politicide was published first on Sep 4, 2003). It was almost five years ago when cruising through a Books etc bookshop I finally found a word I had been looking to invent myself for quite some time.. In fact, on the one hand I know from several first-hand sources, plus plenty of newspaper reports and analyses, of the systematic destruction of the Palestinian identity by Israeli policies. On the other hand, I do not think this can be described as a Palestinian Genocide.. Unless there is a massive media cover-up including, the situation in Palestine simply does not reflect the common definition of Genocide. For example, there is no killing of Palestinian people for the mere fact of them being Palestinians. The risk is that to talk about a Palestinian Genocide means to demean both the victims of genocide (a word that would be watered down), and the Palestinians (whose situation would be completely misunderstood, with the cause fought not ...
Although German Americans number almost 43 million and are the largest ethnic group in the United States, scholars of American literature have paid little attention to this influential and ethnically diverse cultural group. In a work of unparalleled depth and range, Waldemar Zacharasiewicz explores the cultural and historical background of the varied images of Germany and Germans throughout the past two centuries. Using an interdisciplinary approach known as comparative imagology, which borrows from social psychology and cultural anthropology, Zacharasiewicz samples a broad spectrum of original sources, including literary works, letters, diaries, autobiographical accounts, travelogues, newspaper reports, films, and even cartoons and political caricatures ...
Enviro-Mich message from Stewart Freeman ,[email protected], ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some Agent Orange may have been incinerated, but not all of it. Agent Orange and similar chemicals continued to appear for many years. There was, for example, an attempt by the U.S. Forest Service to use an aerial spray of the chemical to destroy Oak and other trees in the area around Bond Falls Basin in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Newspaper reports at the time indicated that the chemicals were war surplus. The purpose of the project was to enhance the growth of pine trees suitable for use as utility poles. Governor Bill Milliken asked the Michigan Environmental Review Board for a recommendation. By then, it was clear that similar spray projects were planned in several states. MERB listened to scientists and people familiar with the area who described the use of the area by hunters and others. The testimony included very powerful comments from Tom ...
MONROE, Ohio (AP) - An Ohio church says a giant Jesus statue is on schedule to be installed next month, replacing one that was destroyed in a lightning fire. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports the new Jesus statue will be installed outside the Solid Rock Church in Monroe along Interstate 75. The installation was originally scheduled for July. The first statue was destroyed more than two years ago after it was hit by lightning. It depicted a waist-up Jesus with arms uplifted, and had the nickname Touchdown Jesus, or Big Butter Jesus for its creamy color. The new concrete-looking statue, a full-bodied Jesus with arms reaching out, is being built at a factory near Dayton. The newspaper reports one sculptor says its already received the nickname, Hug Me Jesus.. ...
This study proposes an analysis of the front pages in the coverage of the attack on Charlie Hebdo in major newspapers in France, USA, Sweden, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Algeria. We applied a mixed methodology that combines quantitative/qualitative content analysis, semiotic analysis and frame-inductive analysis. The results show significant differences between countries in terms of formal coverage, presence and distribution of text and image. In addition, we found two great narrative programs. The Algerian, claiming the innocence of the Muslim community and blames Western and Arab political leaders. And the French, with a program alluding to social empowerment and government support to defend freedom of speech. As the general conclusion, the widely shared story was the Frenchs Western-imposed over the Algerian-Arabic narrative.. ...
These geo-centric ventures, which are attempting to replace or supplement newspapers as the providers of local news and information, do fulfill the second prime principle of community journalism: Focus.. Focus is foremost. Bayosphere lacked focus, the same ailment eating away at newspapers. The thin-slicing of media into smaller and smaller segments that technology-enabled individuals can now readily reassemble into me-media forms is killing all forms of mass media. Journalism is general - for all newspapers that are not the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal or USA Today - must become more focused, more topical and more local. Citizen journalism provides newspapers and other organizations with an opportunity to do that, either by topic (sports, tech) or geography (hyperlocal). But, because media has become personal, both traditional and new forms of journalism are going to need more personality in order to compete for the attention of public already over-stimulated by all forms of digital ...

Concluding this series on homophobia, we will look at the consequences and fallout from pronounced homophobia and ways to deal with homophobia. It is necessary to mention that just last week in Grenada, two adults males were arrested and charged with having consensual sex, a statute dating back to British rule. The island is already facing a potential tourism boycott by the estimated $55 billion dollar gay community as the story has been plastered in many left-leaning websites, blogs and newspapers. This serves as an excellent reminder that in T&T though we may not be perfect we are still much better off as a society compared to our neighbours ...

Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdağ has claimed that there are only 30 journalists in Turkeys prisons and that some jailed individuals may have wrongfully presented their professions as journalism.. Responding to a parliamentary question from main opposition Republican Peoples Party (CHP) deputy Barış Yarkadaş about the number of incarcerated journalists, Bozdağ said there were 30 journalists in jail as of Nov. 22, 2016, contrary to reports putting the number at over 190. In his response, Bozdağ said it would be wrong to calculate the number of imprisoned journalists based on the statements they gave of their profession because some individuals may falsely present themselves as journalists.. In another statement in April 2016, Bozdağ said there were two journalists with press cards in Turkeys prisons.. A detailed report issued by new advocacy group the Stockholm Center for Freedom (SCF) last week said that 191 journalists are in jail, 92 are wanted and 839 have been charged in ...
