The Irish language was once widely spoken on the island of Newfoundland before largely disappearing there by the early 20th century. The language was introduced through mass immigration by Irish speakers, chiefly from Counties Waterford, Tipperary and Cork. The Irish spoken in Newfoundland was said to resemble the dialect spoken in Munster in the eighteenth century. The Irish language arrived in Newfoundland as a consequence of the English migratory cod fishery. While Humphrey Gilbert formally claimed Newfoundland as an English overseas possession in 1583, this did not lead to permanent European settlement. A number of unsuccessful attempts at settlement followed, and the migratory fishery continued to grow. By 1620, fishermen from South West England dominated most of the east coast of Newfoundland, with the French dominant along the south coast and Great Northern Peninsula. After 1713, with the Treaty of Utrecht, the French ceded control of the south and north shores of the island to the ...

Newfoundland is an island northeast of Nova Scotia. Our home for the next ten days was the Ocean Quest Dive Lodge in Conception Bay South near the city of St Johns. Ocean Quest (http://www.oceanquestcharters.com) is a full service dive shop and training facility. The owners, Rick and Debbie Stanley, along with their staff, are all competent divers and avid photographers and videographers. Most importantly, the Ocean Quest crew has extensive cold-water experience, enabling them to help divers be comfortable and safe in these cold waters.. Just like any other underwater imaging project, it is important to feel at home diving in a particular environment before adding a camera. Having drysuit experience before going to Newfoundland is a very good idea. Also keep in mind that this is advanced, but not necessarily technical diving. Any advanced diver who is comfortable in warm water can acclimate to Newfoundland diving with just a little more training.. So why dive in Newfoundlands 32 degree water? ...

The Provincial Government recognizes the need to make the Newfoundland and Labrador fishery as environmentally friendly as possible," said Minister King. "This new demonstration bio-refinery will provide for positive advancements in a more environmentally-sound industry, with the research undoubtedly benefiting Newfoundland and Labrador in the future.". A demonstration bio-refinery is an extension of previous work undertaken by the Marine Institute where a biodiesel refining unit was acquired and processed salmon oil and cod oil into a useable biodiesel. The oil that was used was acquired out of province.. Previously, it was difficult to extract local oil from the available by-products because effective extraction equipment was not available. The next stage of this research is to develop processing methodologies to utilize marine waste oils from the salmonid aquaculture, pelagics and the sealing industry as biodiesel feed stocks. This will form the basis of the demonstration bio-refinery for the ...

The CPLR does not condone breeding with the "primary" intention to produce any one particular Labrador Retriever color, commonly called color breeding.. The CPLR recognizes that many Labrador Retriever breeders breed within a certain Labrador color but that their primary goal is not to just produce that color, but rather healthy, intelligent, good-tempered, and trainable Labradors - some which happen to be either silver, charcoal or champagne.. While it may be true that some people believe to develop a Silver Labrador you must cross it with a Weimaraner and thus have done so, these are not breeders educated in Labrador Retrievers nor are they considered ethical breeders. These breeders fall into the same category as Labradoodle breeders. The MPLH gene exists in many breeds including the Great Dane, Sheltie and Grey Hounds. The confusion arises because the grey solid color in Weimaraners and Silver Labradors are very similar. The Kelloggs kennel argument also plays into this fiction but there is ...

Before we begin, know that there are two types of Labrador: the American and the English. The breed as a whole originated in Newfoundland but was taken to England in the 1800s. The Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labradors English School District (NLESD, which controls all but six schools in the province) has formally brought an end to the Operation Christmas Child (OCC) shoebox appeal operating in its schools, citing concerns over the homophobia and extreme religious views in Samaritans Purse, the charity which runs the scheme. Humanists UK, which for many years has drawn parents attention to issues around religious proselytising through OCC, has welcomed the news.. In October, Humanists UK urged its members to write to schools about the appeal, pointing out that many parents and teachers dont know that OCC uses families charitable donations as a missionary tool for converting people to Christianity. Humanists UK also promotes a list of ethical alternatives to the OCC scheme for parents and teachers who still want to engage children in charitable giving around the holiday season.. District trustees for NLESD voted at a public meeting in late November to ...

The Lower Ordovician St. George Group of western Newfoundland consists mainly of shallow-marine-platform carbonates (∼500 m thick). It is formed, from bottom to top, of the Watts Bight, Boat Harbour, Catoche, and Aguathuna formations. The top boundary of the group is marked by the regional St. George Unconformity. Outcrops and a few cores from western Newfoundland were sampled at high resolution and the extracted micritic materials were investigated for their petrographic and geochemical criteria to evaluate their degree of preservation. The δ13C and δ18O values of well-preserved micrite microsamples range from -4.2‰ to 0‰ (VPDB) and from -11.3‰ to -2.9‰ (VPDB), respectively. The δ13Ccarb profile of the St. George Group carbonates reveals several negative shifts, which vary between ∼2‰ and 3‰ and are generally associated with unconformities-disconformities or thin shale interbeds, thus reflecting the effect of or link with significant sea-level changes. The St. George ...

Large breed dogs, like the Newfoundland, tend to do the best when they are fed premium-quality food that is specially formulated for large breeds. The reason? - These foods contain fewer calories, which is important, as it helps to maintain weight control. Furthermore, formulas that are made for large breed dogs contain the proper ratios of nutrients, as well as supplements that can aid with health issues that large dogs are prone to, such as hip and elbow dysplasia.. During the puppy years, its recommended that Newfoundlands eat food that is formulated for large breeds. These dogs grow quickly, and this type of food will ensure that they are getting the nutrition that they need. For younger pups, four small meals a day is recommended, while adult pups should eat two averaged sized meals a day. However, do keep in mind the activity level of your Newfie. For example, active fishing dogs in Maine might such as Health nutrition maxi require more calories a day than dogs who spend their days ...
Its true that I went to Newfoundland just to take pictures of puffins, but of course I couldnt resist taking a few wildflower pictures, too. This is the oldest known fossil bed of mountain trees that produced seeds more than 305 million years ago. Newfoundland was part of a much larger continental mass and was much further south than today, so the trees grew in a tropical climate and towered to over 160 feet. It is believed that these fossils are rare and represent the first trees that grew on slopes - a major event regarding the evolution of trees in the world. Protected by the Provincial Historic Resource Act.

In the spring of 1999 in rural Newfoundland, abortions in goats were associated with illness in goat workers. An epidemiologic investigation and a serologic survey were conducted in April 1999 to determine the number of infections, nature of illness, and risk factors for infection. Thirty-seven percent of the outbreak cohort had antibody titers to phase II Coxiella burnetii antigen >1:64, suggesting recent infection. The predominant clinical manifestation of Q fever was an acute febrile illness. Independent risk factors for infection included contact with goat placenta, smoking tobacco, and eating cheese made from pasteurized goat milk. This outbreak raises questions about management of such outbreaks, interprovincial sale and movement of domestic ungulates, and the need for discussion between public health practitioners and the dairy industry on control of this highly infectious organism ...

George Sweeney, minister of government services and lands, believes the phones pose a significant risk. "There are limits on human concentration. A drivers preoccupation with dialling and talking means that less attention is paid to driving. … We are convinced cell phone use by drivers constitutes a serious diversion which must be discouraged.". Newfoundlanders appear to share that sentiment. In a government survey conducted last year, 95% of respondents considered cell phone use by drivers to be either a serious or a very serious health and safety problem. "Only 5% believe that all types of cell phone use should be permitted while driving," says Sweeney. "Fifty-five percent say the practice should be prohibited entirely, while 39% feel hands-free is acceptable.". Newfoundland and Labrador is not acting alone. At least 30 countries, including Japan, Russia and Australia, have introduced restrictions on cell phone use while driving. Two years ago, CMAJ called for similar regulations ...
