As was said in an earlier review (and I love mentioning every time I write a review of a new issue: "The name of this zine is BROOKLYN and thats also what the zine is about, Freds beloved borough of Brooklyn." I always enjoy reading an issue when it appears in my mailbox, even with a completely baffling cover photo (turned out to be of lots and lots of Brooklyn pickles, as Brooklyn is the new home of Guss Pickles). Full of photos of Brooklyn (and Park Slope parades), an article about Midwood, a piece about why Brooklyn! will not become an e-zine plus "The Mother of All Brooklyn Bus Rides", and a really, really funny "Brooklyn Lexicon & Pronounciation Guide #54." (I gotta track down the other 53 ...

On June 25, 2020, the New York City Health Department updated its guidance on personal protective equipment ("PPE") for health care personnel ("HCP") and N95 respirators, in line with recent guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ("CDC"). In addition, due to declining community transmission in New York City, the Department also revised its guidance on work restrictions for health care personnel following exposure to COVID-19. However, these guidelines may again need to be revised as the pandemic evolves.. HCP are now advised to use eye protection (goggles or face shield), in addition to face masks or higher level of respiratory protection, during all patient encounters, whether or not COVID-19 is suspected. CDC recommends this protection because most infections occur when the virus enters unprotected mouths, noses, or eyes, and pre-symptomatic and asymptomatic transmission of the virus has been demonstrated.. Due to shortages of N95 respirators, providers and facilities are ...

University Hospital of Brooklyn at Long Island College Hospital (or LICH) was a 506-bed teaching hospital located in the Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill neighborhoods of Brooklyn, New York. It ceased operations on August 30, 2014. Founded in 1858, the Long Island College Hospital introduced the practice of bedside teaching in 1860, and it later became the first U.S. hospital to use stethoscopes and anesthesia. In 1873 it introduced the first emergency ambulance service in Brooklyn. Its collegiate division would later form the Downstate Medical Center, an academic unit of the State University of New York in 1948. The Polhemus Memorial Clinic, an eight-story 1897 tower that was part LICH until July 2008, is considered to be the first example of skyscraper hospital, anywhere in the world. The hospital was affiliated with the Continuum Health Partners. On May 27, 2011, Long Island College Hospital became part of SUNY Downstates University Hospital of Brooklyn, renamed as University Hospital of ...
New York City is the hot spot of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. This paper merges information on the number of tests and the number of infections at the New York City zip code level with demographic and socioeconomic information from the decennial census and the American Community Surveys. People residing in poor or immigrant neighborhoods were less likely to be tested; but the likelihood that a test was positive was larger in those neighborhoods, as well as in neighborhoods with larger households or predominantly black populations. The rate of infection in the population depends on both the frequency of tests and on the fraction of positive tests among those tested. The non-randomness in testing across New York City neighborhoods indicates that the observed correlation between the rate of infection and the socioeconomic characteristics of a community tells an incomplete story of how the pandemic evolved in a congested urban setting. ...

Study Purpose: The NYC HANES was designed to provide prevalence information on (1) conditions that can be identified only through a physical examination (e.g., hypertension) or biologic specimen testing (e.g., diabetes) and (2) conditions that are not easily ascertained by a telephone survey (i.e., mental illness and conditions related to drug use, sexual behavior, incarceration, and domestic violence). Survey topics were selected to provide baseline data on priority chronic and infectious conditions for which intervention programs either exist or can be initiated. The survey was designed so that periodic repetition (approximately every five to seven years) will allow for population-based, outcome-oriented evaluation of local health interventions. Findings from the NYC HANES will complement but not duplicate information gathered from existing data sources within the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, including data from an annual random-digit dialed telephone survey. Well, this is awkward.. And by awkward, Im not talking about the inherent delicacy when discussing little, tiny penises (is that a word? anyone?) No, no, no. That would be very immature. This is awkward because its a separation of religion and state kind of a deal, and THOSE conversations are always loaded.. Add in the baby foreskin issue and the herpes angle and youve kind of hit the awkward trifecta.. Anyway.. The Daily News reports that Brooklyn Assemblyman Dov Hikind is outraged that Mayor Bloomberg has expressed disapproval over the Orthodox Jewish practice of metzitzah bpeh, a practice which is currently under review by the New York City Department of Health. Metzitzah bpeh is a practice "in which the mohel performing a bris removes blood from the babys circumcision wound by mouth." This process is under review by the NYC Dept. of Health because a Brooklyn newborn died last September after contracting the Herpes I virus from the rabbi who performed the ritual circumcision. New York is a state in the northeastern United States. New York was one of the original thirteen colonies that formed the United States. With an estimated 19.8 million residents in 2015,[9] it is the fourth most populous state in the United States. To differentiate from its city with the same name, it is sometimes called New York State.. The states largest city, New York City, makes up over 40% of the states population. Two-thirds of the states population lives in the New York metropolitan area, and nearly 40% lives on Long Island.[10] The state and city were both named for the 17th-century Duke of York, future King James II of England. With an estimated population of 8.55 million in 2015,[10] New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States.[11][12][13] The New York Metropolitan Area is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world.[14][15] New York City is a global city,[16] home to the United ...
Based on information contained in a New York Times (NYT) Diners Journal article of September 12, 2008, urban wineries can be classified as falling under either the "Red Hook" model or the "Crushpad" model. The Red Hook model is named after an urban winery located in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn wherein the facility houses a full commercial winery in an urban setting and the grapes are sourced from other vineyards and processed at the facility. In the Red Hook winery case, according to the NYT, the owners located their facility in Brooklyn to stand out from the wineries on Long Island as well as to be close to the wine directttors of the NYC restaurants. The Crushpad model, on the other hand, caters to the amateur winemaker by providing the environment and direction to aid in realizing his/her wine production dreams. The Brooklyn Winery, located in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, falls into the latter category ...

Many of the remaining buildings were transformed into quarters and offices for enlisted men and officers alike. The main hospital building would remain in abandonment. In 1989, the Navy disposed of NAVSTA Brooklyn. On their way out, they stabilized and abated the main hospital building and the Surgeons Residence, both New York City landmarks. Statement of Basis and Purpose. Statutory Authority. These amendments to the New York City Health Code (the Health Code) are authorized by sections 558 and 1043 of the New York City Charter (the Charter). Sections 558(b) and (c) of the Charter empower the Board of Health (the Board) to amend the Health Code and to include in the Health Code all matters to which the authority of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (the Department) extends. Section 1043 grants the Department rule-making authority. Background. In May 2014, the Commissioner of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene granted a petition from an individual asking that the Board consider amending Article 161 to remove ferrets from the list of animals prohibited as pets in the City of New York. This proposal would initiate the process of amending the Health Code and begin a public comment period on whether ferret ownership should be legalized. Hello, marketing! The masters class in branding is about to be back in session, and it could once again change the make up of a very eclectic Nets fan base.. For their inaugural season in Brooklyn, the Nets took on the daunting task of branding the borough. The results? A resounding success: new black-and-white merchandise flew off the shelves and made the teams merchandise the fourth highest selling in the league. Deron Williams jersey climbed to number 6 on the sales charts. Even celebrities outside of Jay Z bought into the Brooklyn vibe. But more so than any quantifiable metric was the new aura around the franchise; the Nets are now hip and fresh thanks to a reinvigorated social media presence, and a complete embracing of the surrounding community. And it looks as though the effort has begun to roll out the Brooklyn brand to the next full-time tenant of the Barclays Center.. In April at the Sports Business Journal and Daily Conference, Brett Yormark told Chris Botta that "the colors black ...

Darkwave electronic outfit Dicepeople seem keen to explore collaborative work in recent times, with their Moi Saint release being a particular highlight. Their work with Manchester-based collective The Brooklyn Foundation has also produced dividends. As our earlier review noted, the reworking of Dicepeoples 2011 composition Control put the song into a new perspective with its focus on recent political dramas. The reworked version opts for a more punchy dancefloor vibe with some frenetic percussion. A new vocal element from The Brooklyn Foundation lends the new arrangement some pointed lyrical commentary ("inside your golden tower/you stop this world from turning").. Control also features on a new dedicated EP release from Dicepeople/The Brooklyn Foundation which includes Love Parasite. Here, the collaborative effort tackles a cover version of a 1980 song by Fad Gadget. The stage name for Frank Tovey, Fad Gadget was an experimental electronic musician who was part of Mutes original stable ...
