The Coroners Court of New South Wales is the court in the Australian state of New South Wales where legal proceedings, in the form of an inquest or inquiry, are held and presided over by the State Coroner of New South Wales (or NSW State Coroner), a Deputy State Coroner of New South Wales, or another coroner of the state of New South Wales. Coroners must be magistrates in the state and sit in branches of the Local Court of New South Wales. They hold jurisdiction over the remains of a person and have the power to make findings in respect of the cause of death of a person or the cause of any fire in New South Wales. Generally, there are no appeals from the decision(s) of a coroner; but, there is provision for the Supreme Court of New South Wales to order a fresh inquest or inquiry or to grant prerogative relief in respect of the proceedings. The office of coroner in New South Wales derives from the legal framework inherited from the historical origins of the state and, ultimately, the United ...
The Royal Society of New South Wales, Australia traces its origins to the Philosophical Society of Australasia, established on 27 June 1821 and was the first scientific society in the then British Colony of New South Wales. The Society was formed "with a view to enquiring into the various branches of physical science of this vast continent and its adjacent regions". On his arrival in Sydney late in 1821, the newly appointed Governor, Sir Thomas Brisbane, was offered and accepted the position of President. Following a period of informal activity, the Society was revitalised (led by Dr Henry Douglass, one of the original founders) and renamed the Australian Philosophical Society on 19 January 1850. The society was renamed the Philosophical Society of New South Wales in 1856. On 12 December 1866, Queen Victoria granted Royal Assent to change its name to The Royal Society of New South Wales. The Society was incorporated by Act of the New South Wales Parliament in 1881. The rules of the Society ...

Griffith was established in 1916 as part of the New South Wales State Governments Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA) project to supply irrigation from the Murrumbidgee river in western New South Wales to be used for farming.[4] The main dam was the large Burrinjuck Dam between Gundagai and Canberra, which stored water to be released down the river for irrigation. Yanco Weir, near Leeton, was built across the Murrumbidgee, from which flows the Main Canal. The Canal, almost a river in its own right, flows through the MIA to Griffith, supplying water to the entire area, and petering out to the northwest of the city in rice farms.. The water supply was further enhanced with the construction of the Snowy River scheme by the Australian Federal Government in the 1950s and 1960s. The Blowering Dam, a large dam near Tumut stores a significant amount of water to be released down the Murrumbidgee for irrigation around Leeton, Griffith and the newer Coleambally area south of the Murrumbidgee and ...

Sunday, August 20, 2017 On Thursday, the New South Wales (NSW), Australia police extradited self-healer Hongchi Xiao, age reportedly 53 or 54, from London, United Kingdom over the death at his conference, allegedly from diabetic ketoacidosis, of a six-year-old boy. Xiao was arrested at Sydney International Airport at about 5:00AM local time (Australian Eastern Time, UTC+10), taken to Kogarah Police Station, and charged with manslaughter. Xiao appeared in Sydney Central Local Court. Local Court Magistrate L Mabbutt refused bail for Xiao. Xiao was ordered to appear in court on October 24.. Xiao had practiced a self-healing technique, "Paida Lajin", that involves slapping, stretching, and fasting.. The boy died at Xiaos conference at Tasly Healthpac Medical Centre, Hurstville, NSW, held April 22-28, 2015. According to allegations at the court hearing on Thursday, Xiao recommended the boys parents not give him insulin. The Court was also told the boy became ill and unable to walk.. On April 28, ...
The objective of this study was to assess whether the drinking water supplies in northern New South Wales (NSW) recreational parks conformed to the recommendations of the NSW Private Water Supply Guidelines. Water supplies in 57 recreational parks were surveyed to assess implementation of the Guidelines. A random sample of five parks (excluding reticulated town water supply or rainwater) was selected for microbiological sampling over a 12-month period. Additional nine samples were collected from carted water supplies. Forty-four of the 57 water supplies were untreated. Escherichia coli was detected in 16 of 59 monthly samples. Two of 36 treated water samples showed contamination by E. coli compared to 14 of 23 untreated water samples. Three of nine carted water supplies had E. coli at initial sampling. Thirty-four supplies had warning signs posted somewhere in the park. Twenty-one drinking water tanks had evidence of physical deterioration. No supply had a risk-based drinking water management ...
As most of you will already know, the New South Wales parliament recently passed legislation abolishing the right to conscientiously object to vaccination for the purpose of enrolment in early education services in that state. The law takes effect on 01 January 2018.. However, as the law applies only to those enrolments on or after that date, and not existing enrolments, unvaccinated or partially vaccinated children may still be enrolled up until 31 December 2017, even if the placement does not commence until 2018.. So, if you were considering enrolling your child in an early education service next year, please ensure the enrolment is finalised before the end of this year.. How to Register a Conscientious Objection to Vaccination. The Interim Vaccination Objection Form for the purpose of enrolment in NSW Child Care Centres is available from the NSW Health website. You should download and print a copy from the website and bring it to a consultation with a GP or authorised nurse immuniser. The ...

To rapidly describe the epidemiology of influenza-like illness (ILI) during the 2009 winter epidemic of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus in New South Wales, Australia, we used results of a continuous population health survey. During July-September 2009, ILI was experienced by 23% of the population. Among these persons, 51% were unable to undertake normal duties for <3 days, 55% sought care at a general practice, and 5% went to a hospital. Factors independently associated with ILI were younger age, daily smoking, and obesity. Effectiveness of prepandemic seasonal vaccine was ≈20%. The high prevalence of risk factors associated with a substantially increased risk for ILI deserves greater recognition.

In temperate countries, death rates increase in winter, but influenza epidemics often cause greater increases. The death rate time series that occurs without epidemic influenza can be called a seasonal baseline. Differentiating observed death rates from the seasonally oscillating baseline provides estimated influenza-associated death rates. During 2003-2009 in New South Wales, Australia, we used a Serfling approach with robust regression to estimate age-specific weekly baseline all-cause death rates. Total differences between weekly observed and baseline rates during May-September provided annual estimates of influenza-associated death rates. In 2009, which included our first wave of pandemic (H1N1) 2009, the all-age death rate was 6.0 (95% confidence interval 3.1-8.9) per 100,000 persons lower than baseline. In persons >80 years of age, it was 131.6 (95% confidence interval 126.2-137.1) per 100,000 lower. This estimate is consistent with a pandemic virus causing mild illness in most persons

RRH: Rural and Remote Health. Published article number: 3538 - Barriers around access to abortion experienced by rural women in New South Wales, Australia
When a person is charged with breaking laws relating to alcohol, drugs and driving, both the legislation and the procedures relating to it are tested by the way in which the prosecution passes through the Courts. Because New South Wales has adopted the British system of accusatorial justice, all persons are innocent in the eyes of the law unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Traffic matters which involve alcohol and drugs are no different in this respect. There is now no question that alcohol consumption is associated with driving impairment and increased crash risk. Fifteen years ago (Johnston, 1980), it was found that one in every three adults killed in Australian road crashes had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05 g/100 ml or higher. The exact processes by which alcohol causes psychomotor impairment have not been clearly delineated, although they are usually dose-dependent. There is enormous inter-individual variability, however, which has been variously explained in terms of ...

This page provides a general overview of the soil related issues facing New South Wales focussing on sites with Sand soil. This "traffic light" system is a quick and easy way of identifying possible soil constraints to production and formulating management strategies to combat these issues.. For each soil quality indicator, a series of critical values have been applied relating to impacts on production and/or soil quality in general. An indication of red implies a high risk of production impacts and the need to investigate management options urgently. An amber colour implies a moderate risk of production impacts and should be investigated further, while green implies low risk, however regular monitoring should continue. In grouping these traffic lights together, we have provided means of identifying relevant soil production constraints to local growers. Please refer to our factsheet section for management options. ...
the English race cling to their original modes of living, wherever they settle, and, however different iheir adopted may be, to their native climate: it is to the abuse of strong wines, malt liquors, and spirits, and particularly to the excessive consumption of animal food of the richest description, and even to the mode of clothing and housing, that individual diseases, such as dyspepsia, premature decay of teeth, and affection of the brain, may be attributed.. The climate of New South Wales and Van Diemens Land, farther, has never been shown to have exercised any of those deadly or deleterious effects on the constitutions of the first European emigrants, or of those who have followed them, which many climates, highly vaunted for their excellency, have done.. In that delicious abode, the Island of Penang, there was pointed out to me the talus of a range of the richest growth of nutmeg, coffee, and mangustine trees, blending into a not less luxurious platform of gardens and plantations, but ...

I was born on 7 September 1917 at Sydney in Australia. My father was English-born and a graduate of Oxford; my mother, born Hilda Eipper, was descended from a German minister of religion who settled in New South Wales in 1832. I was the second of four children.. Part of my childhood was spent in Sydney and part in rural New South Wales, at Armidale. When I was about ten years old the first signs of deafness (from otosclerosis) became noticeable. The total loss of hearing was a process that lasted more than a decade, but it was sufficiently gradual for me to attend Sydney Boys High School and to profit from the teaching there. In particular a good young teacher, Leonard Basser, influenced me in the direction of chemistry; and this seemed to offer a career where deafness might not be an insuperable handicap.. I entered Sydney University at the age of 16, and though by that time unable to hear any lecture I was attracted by laboratory work in organic chemistry (which I had done in an improvised ...
The Area Health Service responsible for BreastScreen New South Wales, the Sydney South-West Area Health Service succeeded in its appeal and the Court of Appeal have ordered a re-trial on the issue of negligence.. The primary reason for the Appeal being upheld and a re-trial being ordered was the Court of Appeals view that the trial judge had been wrong to refuse to allow the two radiologists involved in assessing Ms OGormans original breast images to give evidence as to whether they had taken reasonable care in examining her breast images.. This is a not uncommon situation. A defendant seeks to bolster its case by reinforcing its "independent" expert witnesses opinions by the views of the particular doctors concerned. I have had first hand experience of this in several cases at and approaching trial in the last two or three years.. Consistent with the New South Wales Court of Appeals decision, the generally accepted position is that such evidence cannot be put forward unless its substance ...
