TRENTON, NJ - New Jerseys tourism industry is on the rebound with tourists spending $38 billion on their visits to the Garden State in 2011, according to figures released today at the New Jersey Conference on Tourism. The new visitor expenditures are just shy of the all-time high of $39.5 billion reached in 2007 and are a 7 percent increase over 2010 figures, further indicating that the New Jersey Comeback is taking hold in vital sectors of the state economy.. This report is great economic news for New Jersey and another indication that the New Jersey Comeback has begun, said Governor Chris Christie. These results give us a solid foundation to build upon as we move forward with a common sense and comprehensive plan to strengthen our tourism promotion activities. Along with our efforts to revitalize and invest in Atlantic City, the steps we have taken will have a positive and lasting impact on economic growth for New Jersey over the long run.. In light of national scandal involving high levels of lead in the drinking water in Flint, Michigan, officials across the country, including New Jersey, have found it prudent to determine whether similar problems exist in their states. In January, 2016, New Jersey state officials were put on notice of concerns about the toxicity levels in drinking water at a dozen systems across the state. They include the Atlantic City Municipal Utilities Authority; the Raritan, Logan and Pennsgrove systems of New Jersey American; the Montclair Water Bureau; Greenwich Township; Garfield Water Department; Rahway Water Department; Brick Township; Paulsboro Water Department; Orange Water Department; and South Orange Water Department.. According to reports, the level of perfluorooctanic acid (PFOA) in the drinking water in these systems is at or above guidance levels established by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The problem is not one that is unique to New Jersey, though, as 26 other ...

Will Continue New Jersey s Unprecedented Effort for New Orleans. (TRENTON) Directed by Acting Governor Richard J. Codey, the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management sent 148 additional police officers and medical support personnel to New Orleans this morning, and will send an expected 30 decontamination personnel on Thursday.. No other state has set up a self-sufficient police station to lead the emergency services for an entire section of that great city. New Jersey also stands ready to help the areas affected by Hurricane Rita, as soon as those states request our help. None of this would be possible without New Jersey s first responders, who are among the best in the nation. In response to the passage of this bill, New Jersey Policy Perspective (NJPP) releases the following statement. Brittany Holom, Senior Policy Analyst, New Jersey Policy Perspective:. With the passage of this bill, New Jersey is solidifying itself as a national leader in protecting the Affordable Care Act and keeping health coverage affordable. The Health Insurance Assessment will provide ample resources for New Jersey to expand health coverage, lower the number of people who are uninsured, and address racial disparities in access to care. These are necessary steps to build a stronger and more equitable state where all residents can ...

Identifying and prioritizing the states most seriously polluted waters are important steps in the effort to reduce water pollution, said Judith Enck, EPA Regional Administrator. Since the Clean Water Act was adopted, water quality in New Jerseys rivers, lakes and streams has improved, but we still have a very long way to go. By investing in infrastructure and by implementing green infrastructure to control stormwater runoff, communities throughout New Jersey can improve water quality. Also, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is tackling a decades-old problem by putting in place more stringent regulatory controls at combined sewage outfalls in the Camden and NY/NJ harbor areas. As New Jersey finalizes and fully implements these permits, we expect to see improvements in water quality ...

She was told by case managers in her shelter that she should look in New Jersey, in the cities of Newark or Paterson, because New York landlords were leery of the SOTA program and because she would find something quicker in New Jersey, Newarks lawyers said in court filings.. The de Blasio administration did not immediately respond to a request for comment.. Baraka, Newarks mayor since 2014 and the son of poet and African-American activist Amiri Baraka, and de Blasio, a former Democratic presidential candidate who touts himself as a progressive, appeared together in Newark last year to announce a tenant initiative aimed at keeping people in their homes, in part by ending illegal evictions. The New Jersey program was modeled after one in New York City and both mayors praised one another for pursuing the initiatives.. In the United States, most reported cases of babesiosis have been caused by Babesia microti and acquired in the northeast. Although three cases of babesiosis acquired in New Jersey were recently described by others, babesiosis has not been widely known to be endemic in New Jersey. We describe a case of babesiosis acquired in New Jersey in 1999 in an otherwise healthy 53-year-old woman who developed life-threatening disease. We also provide composite data on 40 cases of babesiosis acquired from 1993 through 2001 in New Jersey. The 40 cases include the one we describe, the three cases previously described, and 36 other cases reported to public health agencies. The 40 cases were acquired in eight (38.1%) of the 21 counties in the state. Babesiosis, a potentially serious zoonosis, is endemic in New Jersey and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with fever and hemolytic anemia, particularly in the spring, summer, and early fall ...
Ryan Haygood, CEO of NJISJ, added that New Jersey bears some of the worst racial disparities in the United States. White families in the state boast a median net worth of $309,000, a staggering contrast to the $7,020 median for Latino families and $5,900 median for black families. The driver of these low numbers for black and Latino families on a city, state and national level is a drastic fall in home ownership, a primary driver of wealth, according to Haygood. Fifty years after President Johnson signed the Fair Housing Act, which was specifically intended to increase homeownership among our folks, you see [these numbers] play out in the city of Newark, Haygood said. To combat what Baraka sees as a past lack of political will to provide links to support, the city launched the Equitable Growth Advisory Commission in 2018, which aims to extend the benefits of Newarks growing economy to all residents. NJISJ is proposing a state-wide Individual Development Account (IDA) to help Newark residents ...
TRENTON) - A 7-year-old horse in Monmouth County is the third reported case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), a serious, mosquito-borne illness in horses, in New Jersey for 2018. The horse had not been vaccinated against EEE in 2018 and was euthanized on September 4, 2018.. This is another sad and unfortunate reminder that horse owners need to be vigilant in vaccinating their animals against diseases spread by mosquitoes, New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture Douglas H. Fisher said. Vaccinated animals are much less likely to contract deadly diseases such as EEE and West Nile Virus.. EEE causes inflammation of the brain tissue and has a significantly higher risk of death in horses than West Nile Virus infection. West Nile virus is a viral disease that affects a horses neurological system. The disease is transmitted by a mosquito bite. The virus cycles between birds and mosquitoes with horses and humans being incidental hosts. EEE infections in horses are not a significant risk factor for ...
An interstate compact had been signed between New York and New Jersey in 1834, prior to Ellis Island becoming a major immigration center. This compact granted New York the rights to all islands in the water channel separating the two states including both Ellis Island and Liberty Island, but granting New Jersey the rights to half of the water channel. This agreement was fashioned in order to allow New Jersey to build docks on the riverfront, while allowing New York to control islands that it already considered integral parts of its territory. This led to places such as Ellis Island located on the New Jersey side of the river, but belonging to New York.[1]. Between the 1890s and 1934, Ellis Island was expanded through land reclamation and soon became a major center for immigrants coming from Europe to the New World. This land was added by the federal government and considered part of New York for decades before New Jersey brought its lawsuit. Since the land added by the federal government was not ...
Its about time. On Monday, January 11, 2016 New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed into law Bill S939 designating the Black Swallowtail (Papilio Polyxenes) as New Jerseys official state butterfly. This bill had passed in the state assembly with a 68-0 unanimous vote back on Dec 17, 2015. As an avid nature photographer who has personally photographed dozens and dozens of butterflies in their native habitat - including the Black Swallowtail , I was especially excited by the news about New Jerseys latest state symbol. Though the Black Swallowtail is common throughout North America, it is still a stunning sight to behold, and I am so grateful that it spends its entire lifecycle right here in New Jersey (in all 21 counties). As pollinators, the Black Swallowtails are essential to the ecosystem, and can be found in open areas, meadows, wetlands, fields, roadsides, farms and gardens. The adult butterflies feed on the nectar of flora including milkweed, thistle, wild bergamot, purple coneflower, ...

Some flights were held at their points of departure in order to slow down incoming traffic at Newark.. My main concern being a Correction Officer in New Jersey is PRIVATIZATION.. If you work in a Correction facility in New Jersey you most likely have the same fear. Our current Governor promised that she would not utter the words privatization and corrections together if she was reelected but two facilities have been privatized in North Jersey. But what do you expect, when was the last time you actually believed a politicians promises? These are your main enemies - THE POLITICIANS! Their main concern is votes and budgets. Not your ability to make a living or job security.. Your best weapon against privatization is education. Not a college education but an education in the world of privatization. This is the way you can fight the possibility of you losing your job. Educate your neighbors, friends, and families about privatization. What it can do to you ...

Slusarczyk, G.; Cialone, M.A., and Nadal-Caraballo, N.C., 2021. Impact of inlet closures on water volumes in Barnegat Bay, New Jersey, U.S.A. Journal of Coastal Research, 37(3), 461-467. Coconut Creek (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208.. This paper describes the impact of Hurricane Sandy on the volume of water in Barnegat Bay, New Jersey, and the potential for inlet closures to reduce that volume, had they been in place at the time of the storm. Barnegat Bay is hydraulically connected with several other bays to form the largest bay system in New Jersey (over 326 km2). The importance of reducing the volume of water in the embayment during a storm event is to minimize back-bay flooding from the water volume itself and to mitigate additional back-bay flooding from seiching effects along the north-to-south axis of this bay system. Analyses of Barnegat Bay water volume time-series during Hurricane Sandy were made to compare water volumes for different combinations of Barnegat Bay inlet closures to water ...
In an effort to better understand the unique issues that affect New Jersey residents living with rare diseases, a bill sponsored by Assembly Democrats Daniel Benson and Anthony Verrelli to establish a New Jersey Rare Disease Advisory Council was signed into law by the Governor on Wednesday.. Rare diseases are defined as those affecting fewer than 20,000 people. An estimated 25 to 30 million Americans are living with one or more of 7,000 different rare diseases - many of which are genetic.. The goal of an advisory council comprised of qualified professionals and individuals with rare diseases, as established by the law (formerly bill A-4016/S-2682), will be to study the link between COVID-19 and rare diseases as well as learn about any issues individuals may have with accessing treatment and services. The council will advise government officials and health care providers, and raise awareness about these rare diseases.. Upon the bill becoming law, Assemblymen Benson (D-Mercer, Middlesex) and ...

Camden is a city in Camden County, New Jersey. Located just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, Camden is a former industrial boom-town that has fallen onto hard times. Decades of disinvestment and government mismanagement have contributed to Camdens sky-high crime rate, and many of the citys neighborhoods are hotbeds of gang- and drug-related violence. However, the government has, in recent years, begun developing the Delaware River waterfront, which is now a popular and well-traveled tourist destination offering grand views of the Philadelphia skyline and a multitude of activities for adults and children alike. Headlines about violence and crime in Camden may dissuade many tourists to the Philadelphia area from visiting, but a one-day trip to the waterfront may be well worth the trip.
