As the nineteenth century drew to a close, the needs of hospitals prompted the establishment of training schools for nurses and the germination of the concept of professional nursing. The first such training school in New Hampshire was opened at the New Hampshire State Hospital in 1888.. As a result of these developments, nurses began to organize themselves for the improvement of patient care. The forerunner of the American Nurses Association was formed in 1896 and that of the National League for Nursing in 1893.. In New Hampshire, nurses who had graduated from the states training school programs were also feeling the need to organize, and in April 1906 fifty of them met in Concord to discuss the establishment of a permanent association. A month later, on May 28, 1906, at a second meeting held at the state hospital, the Graduate Nurses Association of New Hampshire was formed. It changed its name to the New Hampshire State Nurses Association in the 1940s. (For more information, see A Brief ...
On August 20, 1996, a 32-year-old resident of New Hampshire died in a Massachusetts hospital from an illness characterized by rapid neurologic deterioration. Rabies had been clinically suspected on the date of her transfer from a New Hampshire hospital (August 14) and was confirmed by CDC on August 17. This report summarizes the investigation of this case by the state health departments of New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, which implicated a dog in Kathmandu, Nepal, as the probable source of exposure. The patient initially sought care at a hospital emergency department (ED) in New Hampshire on August 12 for a 2-day history of paresthesias and pain radiating up her left arm from the site of a healed bite. She reported being bitten by a dog on her left hand on June 7 while in Kathmandu, but did not receive rabies postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) for the bite. Physical examination was normal, and left cervical radiculopathy was diagnosed. Anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs ...
Q. Whom does the Home Care Association of New Hampshire represent? A. Our membership is licensed providers of home health services in New Hampshire. Most people identify us by the Visiting Nurse Association agencies. That is a large portion of our membership. But we also represent proprietary home health services. Basically, the requirement to be a member of our association is that you must licensed by the state of New Hampshire to deliver home health services. Q. Theres a pretty broad range of services under the aegis of home health care, isnt there? A. Yes. I think the public is hearing a lot about home health care as an alternative to nursing home care or long-term, chronic care. It ranges from skilled nursing, therapies, acute care kinds of services in the home to long-term or chronic care and supportive services that includes home health aides, homemaker services and companionship services. In New Hampshire, most hospice services are also provided in the home by the VNA. The majority of ...

To improve the understanding of aerosol composition, sources, and spatial and temporal variations, atmospheric aerosols were characterized in three locations. Ambient aerosols were characterized using 24-hour samples collected from Kathmandu, Nepal (urban), New Hampshire (semi-rural) and Houston (urban). Results are reported in the main chapters. Chamber studies of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) formation from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and the effects of in-situ SOA formation on atmospheric mercury oxidation are described in the appendices. Carbonaceous, ionic, and isotopic species in aerosols from Kathmandu identified local primary emissions, most likely vehicular exhaust as the most important aerosol sources. Carbonaceous aerosols collected in Kathmandu (24.5 μg C m -3 ) were much larger than those in New Hampshire (3.74 μg C m -3 ) during winter. Stable carbon isotope in aerosols of Kathmandu and New Hampshire were similar (Δδ 13 C ∠ 0.5[per thousand]) while stable ...

The land of Hampton Falls was first settled by Europeans in 1638, the same time as Hampton, which it was then part of. The settlement of Hampton joined Norfolk County, Massachusetts Colony, in 1643, along with Exeter, Dover, Portsmouth, and Salisbury and Haverhill of Massachusetts. The county existed until 1679, when the modern-day New Hampshire towns separated from Massachusetts Bay Colony.[2] Records indicate a building that became a church may have existed near where the Weare Monument now is in 1665, but when it was first built is unknown. It was not until 1709 that the town was officially established as the Third Parish of Hampton. The Third Parish originally consisted of all land south of the Taylor River and north of the New Hampshire/Massachusetts border, or the modern-day towns of Seabrook, Kensington, and Hampton Falls. A meeting house was built shortly after and Thomas Crosby became the towns minister for the church. Forty-nine members of the Hampton Church were dismissed late in ...
Between 2007 and 2013 there were on average approximately 130 cases per year of gonorrhea reported in New Hampshire. The New Hampsphire Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health Services (DPHS) has received 465 reports of cases of gonorrhea contracted in 2016, which represents a more than 250% increase over the previous baseline.. This has prompted health officials to recommend that everyone who is sexually active should talk with their healthcare provider about being tested for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), such as gonorrhea and chlamydia, and anybody who may have been exposed to gonorrhea through a sex partner should seek care immediately for testing and treatment.. New Hampshire historically has had one of the lowest rates of gonorrhea infections in the country; however, over the last year we have seen a significant increase in the number of reported cases, said State Epidemiologist Dr. Benjamin Chan. It starts with the canard that New Hampshire suffers from uniquely high costs for electricity. The truth is that New Hampshire is in the middle of energy costs in New England and, although the region does have higher rates than some other parts of the country, this is not a serious threat to economic expansion here. Part of the reason for this is that, even with somewhat higher rates than, for example, the Southeast, New Hampshire does not have substantially higher bills, ranking 21st. This is because our businesses and residential customers have found ways to reduce their demand. The real barrier to business expansion in New Hampshire is not energy costs. It is workforce and workforce housing.. It was telling that Governor Sununus example of the detrimental effect of New Hampshires supposed high costs was Hitchiner Manufacturing, which was planning an expansion, but supposedly considered not choosing the Granite State. Hitchiner in fact moved ahead with its planned New Hampshire expansion - ...

NEW HAVEN, Conn.. - New Hampshire Gov.. Maggie Hassan said Friday that a medication that could be used to treat hematurias could cause an increase in deaths.. Hassan said she had not heard of any deaths related to the treatment medication hematura, but that it has been reported that a man in Colorado died from hematuriasis complications.. The governor said that in a statement, the state health department has looked into reports of death, but had not found evidence to indicate that the medication could cause a spike in deaths from a disease that is treatable with conventional medical treatments.. A spokeswoman for the state Department of Health said the department is working with state and federal health officials to assess the use of hematuras.. In January, New Hampshire began the use, for people with hematuric conditions, of a new drug called thrombin, also known as platelet boosting medication.. It is used to prevent blood clots and clotting problems caused by blood clumps and thrombotic ...

I entered 1-W service in 1965 during the Vietnam War when I was 19 years old. I had been notified to go to the New Cumberland (PA) Army Depot for my physical examination. If you were called to go for your physical exam, it was almost certain that you would be drafted in a short time. Some conscientious objectors were working in the forestry service and I thought I would like to do that, but that did not work out. Then I checked into working at an experimental farm in Beltsville, Maryland, but no positions were available there. I was trying to avoid working in a hospital but God had different plans for me.. I had met Jay once or twice during the summer and knew that he was going to work at a hospital in Hanover, New Hampshire for his two years of service. Through a series of events I decided I would apply for work at Mary Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover. Following an interview I was hired to work as an operating room orderly.. Gene E. Likens and Richard T. Holmes-. Acid rain or acid precipitation or acid deposition as it is variably called, was first identified in North America more than five decades ago at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Scientists who were initiating the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study at that time were surprised that their first samples of rainfall, collected in 1963, were up to 100 times more acidic than they expected them to be. Indeed, the first sample collected on July 24, 1963 had a pH (a measure of acidity) level of 3.7. It was thought at the time that the background value in areas remote from major human activity would be around pH 5.6. Hydrogen ion concentration changes tenfold between each whole unit of the pH value, i.e. pH 4 is 10 times more acidic than pH 5.. This surprising discovery raised many questions, such as, How widespread was this problem? How long had precipitation been this acidic? What was the origin of the acidity? What might be ...
Since the Industrial Revolution, emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides to the atmosphere have increased. In 1852, Robert Angus Smith was the first to show the relationship between acid rain and atmospheric pollution in Manchester, England. Though acidic rain was discovered in 1852, it was not until the late 1960s that scientists began widely observing and studying the phenomenon. The term acid rain was generated in 1972. Canadian Harold Harvey was among the first to research a dead lake. Public awareness of acid rain in the U.S increased in the 1970s after the New York Times promulgated reports from the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire of the myriad deleterious environmental effects demonstrated to result from it ...

Theres been another mountain lion sighting in New Hampshire. And this time, it was a Fish and Game employee who spotted the big, tawny cat. Further inspection found no physical evidence that the state has its first confirmed cougar in 140 years, but officials are taking the report seriously. The sighting occurred late Wednesday in Barnstead, as the staff member for the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department was following up on a citizens reported sighting, said Mark Ellingwood, a wildlife biologist with the department. The staff member was walking on a trail and spotted the mountain lion about 30 yards away. It was in sight for about 10 seconds. The animal slipped away, and that was the end of the encounter, Ellingwood said. The sighting appears credible, he said. But like the 100 or so mountain lion reports each year, this one failed to yield any tracks, hair or scat that would convince scientists a mountain lion had definitely passed that way. If the Barnstead cat was indeed a mountain ...
The Brunswick water sampling comes one year after officials in New Hampshire began testing blood samples from individuals potentially exposed to PFCs in a public water well in Portsmouth located near the former Pease Air Force Base. Unlike in New Hampshire, where the chemicals discovery caused considerable controversy, PFCs have not been detected at elevated levels in Brunswicks public water supplies..
