BACKGROUND: Gelatin-thrombin hemostatic matrix (FloSeal®) use is associated with shorter surgical times and less blood loss, parameters that are highly valued in neurosurgical procedures. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of gelatin-thrombin in neurosurgical procedures and estimate its economic value. METHODS: In a 6-month retrospective evaluation at 2 hospitals, intraoperative and postoperative information were collected from patients undergoing neurosurgical procedures where bleeding was controlled with gelatin-thrombin matrix or according to local bleeding control guidelines (control group). Study endpoints were: length of surgery, estimated blood loss, hospitalization duration, blood units utilized, intensive care unit days, postoperative complications, and time to recovery. Statistical methods compared endpoints between the gelatin-thrombin and control groups and resource utilization costs were estimated. RESULTS: Seventy-eight patients (38 gelatin-thrombin; 40 control) were included. ...

Emma Kon, 25, made news in the United Kingdom after doctors performed multiple surgeries to remove seven parts of her brain in an effort to and treat a crippling epileptic condition in which she sometimes had 100 seizures each day. Now, about nine months after her treatments, Kon told the UKs Daily Mail that she has had no seizures and is feeling well. While epilepsy experts say that complications from brain surgery usually occur immediately after the operation and that reduced seizure activity is a good sign that a person is in recovery, side effects of drastic brain surgery can arise unexpectedly.

Dr. Demetrius Lopes (a neurosurgeon) and Dr. Thomas Grobelny (a neuroradiologist) from the Neurologic & Orthopedic Institute of Chicago recently performed the first minimally invasive neuroendovascular procedure with a system called the Cordis Enterprise Vascular Reconstruction Device. The patient was a 58 year old woman diagnosed with an aneurysm based on symptoms that included problems maintaining her balance and ringing in her ears.. Neuroendovascular surgery combines the use of an x-ray, catheters, and clotting agents to treat brain and spine diseases that affect blood vessels. Surgeons place catheters into damaged blood vessels and fill the vessels with clotting agents. The procedure is normally performed in a fluoroscopy room instead of an operating room.. The technique that was designed by Dr. Lopes and Dr. Grobelny involves filling the aneurysm (via a catheter) with coils to obstruct blood flow to the aneurysm. In addition to coils, stents (wire mesh) are placed in the blood vessel to ...

Researchers have developed a new device to map the brain during surgery and distinguish between healthy and diseased tissues. The device provides higher resolution neural readings than existing tools used in the clinic and could enable doctors to perform safer, more precise brain surgeries.. The device is an improved version of a clinical tool called an electrode grid, which is a plastic or silicone-based grid of electrodes that is placed directly on the surface of the brain during surgery to monitor the activity of large groups of neurons. Neurosurgeons use electrode grids to identify which areas of the brain are diseased in order to avoid damaging or removing healthy, functional tissue during operations. Despite their wide use, electrode grids have remained bulky and have not experienced any major advances over the last 20 years.. The new electrode grid, developed by a team of researchers at the University of California San Diego and Massachusetts General Hospital, is about a thousand times ...

How does it feel to hold someones life in your hands, to cut into the stuff that creates thought, feeling, and reason? How do you live with the consequences of performing a potentially lifesaving operation when it all goes wrong?. In neurosurgery, more than in any other branch of medicine, the doctors oath to do no harm holds a bitter irony. Operations on the brain carry grave risks. Every day, leading neurosurgeon Henry Marsh must make agonizing decisions, often in the face of great urgency and uncertainty.. If you believe that brain surgery is a precise and exquisite craft, practiced by calm and detached doctors, this gripping, brutally honest account will make you think again. I am not happy about the brain surgery I had. I tolerated it. Ive dealt with lingering post-issues. However, have I accepted any of it? I was recently told that the path to dealing with life events, failure, and disappointment is acceptance. What does that mean? I recently dug into the dictionary of Google and found myself stuck between tolerance and acceptance. I learned a new perspective.. I drilled down through layers of web pages and definitions. I dug from high-level headlines to a detailed analysis of terms and descriptive words. Acceptance comes from the word accept which means that you consent to receive, believe or recognize. Yea, okay. Consent is not implying that I welcome, without trying to rewrite. Ive often recited the obvious - you cant have highs without lows, but I havent been past tolerance with the lows. I pondered as I looked out the window at trees and life.. We all quickly accept things that go our way in life. We accept without questioning desirable life events such as ...
